Cooking traditional food with a Russian Babushka. This is life in my family in Russia. We are bringing you along with my family in Siberia, Russia as we prepare for new years eve 2022, sharing our lives, cooking some amazing food with my gran, Matt, brother, sister and auntie. My Mum also flew in to Siberia from Sochi to celebrate the start of 2023 together with the rest of the family.

I have always wanted to visit Russia; my grandfather came from there. Now, having watched your videos, I want to visit even more. The "Russian salad" brought back many fond memories from my childhood; my mother would make that dish for special occasions and I absolutely loved it.

My first comment -- It's after midnight 9 Jul 23, in Palm Bay, FL. I was bored and got on youtube hoping to find something interesting to watch. I just happen to come across your video(s) and must say this one hit home with some tears; it was such a joy watching Julia cooking with Grandmother. It reminded me so much of when I did the same during my times at my Abuela's (RIP) home in Puerto Rico, but of course in much warmer weather ;-) As for the food, it looked so delicious. As for your Mom, holy beautiful lady on earth...IS SHE SINGLE??! I can definitely see where the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, Julia! I was so warm and content watching this video, and then at 14:12 your aunty said aloud "I feel so warm - it's because of our love." Do you know, Matt and Julia, that is at the essence of your videos, so much love for each other, family, the world, and us. I wish I could see a list of everything you made, what was that dish containing the beets? I always love cooking with your gran. Between the three of you, I always learn about the different foods and how to prepare them. Yes, cooking so much food means that you can share with others and don't have to cook for a while. How good is the postal service in Russia??? Can you overnight me some to the US??? If yes, my address will follow!!!😋😋😁
I'm glad you were able to spend the holidays with your whole family. When I was young I remember that at parties someone in my family would always bring aspic which seems to be very similar to what your grandmother prepared, but it is a dish that is no longer customary to make, perhaps because it takes a long time. But it is very common to prepare Russian salad. And yes, the best are the leftovers for the rest of the week. It seems that Matt was able to open the bottle quickly, not like last year !! haha What did your sister do, light a piece of paper and throw it into the glass? Is it a custom there? The best times and the lasting memories are the ones that come from being with family. I really enjoy seeing Julia with her Gran. Those are special moments that you will remember forever. Learning the traditions that are passed from generation to generation make us who we are. Two I really miss are the 'sleje' (?) (herring with onions) and the 'opowatke' (?). These old ladies know to cook delicious food even out of nothing and so you would be able to feed Matt in future with good food as well. Btw, cutting a carrot can be be done much faster. You dont need to much care about your fingers cos carrots are red anyway. Stay safe and healthy.

As you other may noticed, in Nordic countries as in Sweden and Siberia we always taking of our shoes before we walk in our or others houses - 13:37 in this video.
Siberia is Russia (the Asian part).
Shoes are taken off absolutely all over Russia, this is instilled from childhood.
We do not understand how you can walk at home in street shoes, these are germs and any infection.

I always like to cook for 2 days and usually the next day it is even better. And besides cooking to eat for 2 days i also make an extra portion usually to freeze and eat some some time later, maybe the next week or the week after or the next month. And i usually have a freezer with different meals to choose from that way.

The eating of it all is usually a bit of an anticlimax isn't it? It's the hustle, bustle and family feeling that goes along with preparing it that's the most important. Loved all of your traditions and all of the celebration foods too. Don't ask me to choose. I'd love to sample it all!

Ohh, the broth is to cloudy, needed some rinse ones again when started to boil, the broth comes more clear after!! In my country people makes this dish arownd Christmas when they cuts the pigs, is named "răcitura" , is traditional dish of christians to celebrations!
