as soon you took the saw out, i decided i'll just look for a used headlight on ebay. thanks for the video.
Your channel is great but not certain how you maintain your sanity working on broken bmws I know I almost lost mine. Kudos to you!
Hey Nate I've watched about 5 different videos on this process. I put my sons light assembly in the oven at 220 for about 25 minutes. I was able to remove lense in 1 piece. I used 2 screwdrivers together like taking a tire off a bicycle tire ..slow pressure . am using your idea about the flex seal though
Also it was a 2008 e60 528i
I need your help, I have an e60 LCI and need to replace that same cover. When you did it for your son’s light, did he have leakage or problems with the light later?
We all love the look of modern cars with their fancy headlights, but... they are a major pain to service and they cost a fortune to replace as a unit. You were brave to tackle that job Nathan, I wouldn't have touched it with a 12 foot pole!
I mean I have done worse but its no walk in the park for sure
Thank you Nathan! All the other videos I found where for preface. So I feared the adaptive LCI headlights where impossible to separate successfully, until watching this.
Oh man, I kinda feel your stress fixing that headlight... really it makes a man crazy , I would make a cartoon story of Nathan and the stubborn BMW ;) Emotions in the video: Very good!! :)
Just finished doing this to some M5 headlights, $2,000 vs $220. Worth it? Probably, but it’s not for the faint of heart. Takes tons of patience and caution. Thanks for the video!
Practise cutting the hole using the old lense
The reason the new lens doesn't have a hole for the DRL bulb us because most people that remove the lenses are doing some sort of modification and that usually includes LED angel eyes installation. So, no real need for a hole that could be a potential area for moisture contamination.
Was sent here by a subscriber. Great content. 🔥 Subbed. 👍
Osculating saws work good instead of a razor knife. Use a multi-speed one on low and with flat edged blade. Much less chance of slipping and cutting your throat.
I just started this job and I'm already regretting it, lol. Thanks for the video. Wouldn't have tried it otherwise.
How’d it go?
I would rather eat some MRE squid than do that much work. And I don't like squid. Great job Nathan, way to stay with it. 👍
Nothing is easy in life lol, digging in for concrete in the back, getting to old for that too , the biggest thing is taking my time on any project and not getting hurt
@@NathansBMWWorkshop know what you mean about not getting hurt doing your job. I work with on equipment that weighs in excess of hundred twenty thousand pounds. So far knock on wood no close calls. Time to start slowing down and enjoy my grandchildren. We always get the job done buddy. Thanks for responding to your viewers. 👍
@@NathansBMWWorkshop what I meant was for that much work I might have looked for some headlight assemblies, my patience is not what it used to be 👍
Good morning. Thank you for this video!! Im in process of doing this at the moment, following your video. Could you advise, please? Im having a hard time to put new cover back, its just doesnt fit snug, feels like original adhesive not letting it back in, not sure what to do? have you removed old adhesive from the seam? any advice in my situation? Thank you very much in advance.
What about heating up a hole saw bit and melting the hole?
how was the gap when refitting the new lens? Does it fit as close to oem? I noticed its really close on the original I cant by the hell of it get enough glue out of the channel so the new lens fits more proud than before. Does the mounting allow for adjustment for the lens?
I have seen ovens to bake the lights then seperate.
Took me 6 hours to clean the old glue from the channel with small chisel and razor knife)), and it’s only on one housing, . But hell, all glue out and I used glass sealant glue to install new lens , would never play with anything other than what it has to have
Looks great. Use a bigger saw next time though; it'll go quicker
used a hot iron to make the hole
What brand lense is the new one? I unfortunately need to do this. I’ll set aside a weekend it looks like.
Hey thanks for the video. I changed the lense but the cable for the eye brows I think, don't fit. I have two male cables. How can I solve this?
Sir can you confirm the part number of the original complete lense , same you installed , dont want to install chinese lenses
hey Theresa..
you had LCI e60 headlights ...and installed the non facelift lenses on them
do they fit 100%?
are they the same like the lenses from the lci headlights?
He has Hardy gloves so I knew he knew what he was talking about.
I know those eyebrows leaked
How did u close it? Did u remove the old glue around the old lens?? Or u kept it and just added new glue?
The new lens is for euro models without DRL
Well at least you have the LED DRLs so the hole shouldn’t matter too much...hopefully! 😬
Ship it to me and I'll cut a hole in the lense for you. That's easy. Or you can just make sure it is above 70 degrees, get a diamond tip bit the exact size and take your time going real slow plunging the hole. When you are done make sure to round the edge and flame it after.
think ill just pop this lens off if I have to change them
@@NathansBMWWorkshop Yeah, I'd rather do that than deal with the 01 e46 325i that I bought from a friend that I just found out used stop leak for a coolant leak...... needles to say I'm just about ready to pull the head off and look to see if it as just the HG or a cracked head. I'll trade ya just for today. LoL, love the videos! Keep them coming.
can you burn the hole in the lens
Holy shit what a nightmare. I'm sorry you had to deal with that lol
Quit being cheap and just buy a new set from BMW, they’re only like $1300 each!
David H Lololol jesus
Yea I am seriously thinking of going after market assembly... led lights wire is rotting... but so many to choose from and it really looks like I am going to be spending a ton of money.... again lol
My buddy has a saying. If you want to own a Mercedes you better have mecedes money. There is no level of these cars that were made for the common man.Maybe just admire and wash them.My brother said poor people have poor people ways.I see average people when they get these cars and get to experience the transmission problems and all the coolant and hydraulic nightmares. All the hoses and pipes need replacing, hydraulic and cooling. You can't do aftermarket either,it will leak.GOOD TIMES...
This is insane.
I knew that opening E60 headlights was next to impossible, but damn -- that's even worse than I thought.
You could have baked it open putting it in the oven. That’s what I did with mine
What temp and how long did you do yours
Brave man. Not looking forward to doing this. I just have zero tolerance for non-serviceable engineering. With all the modeling tools, clips and fittings available, it’s unacceptably poor design to not be able to change a lens. The engineers are probably not paid enough to drive one themselves so screw the customer?
Id rather spend $1,000 on a new light, idk how you have the patience lol
Recoat the wires??? If you took apart the headlight like you did, you should have made the effort to repair the wires properly by replacing each individual one or at the very least, completely covering each of them in shrink wrap so that you don’t have to take it apart twice. It’s too bad. Missed opportunity
Too many wires)) there are like 6 wires , stretched all over the housing, , so it’s easier to reocoat. I did same thing, recoated and did not touch them , that liquid coating works good , just let it dry l
Wow, so beat yourself up for many hours to have a possibly leaking headlamp or spend 500-1k on a aftermarke/OEM headlamp. I might just live with my cloudy lenses then, this sucks
There's seriously no other headlights you could of bought to avoid all this? None that are meant to simply open and not by cut, drilled and all that?
I just did this today…. Holy $hIt!! I’ll never do that again 🤮
Yep I warned you , it’s a good way to waste hours of time
@@NathansBMWWorkshop I can’t believe how hard it was to get the old adhesive out. If it leaks, I’ll buy a used one. I wish the u pull it by me had more BMWs. They had one LCI E60 that was smashed in the front.
Mine just showed up today. Not looking forward to this at all lol
dont do it , those leaked since i did that
@@NathansBMWWorkshop I missed this reply. I sealed them with windshield sealant.. hopefully it helps. What a miserable job!
Geezus, hourly wage @ $85 hr. puts the pain and suffering at self inflicted levels. Add up time and materials. Just buy the whole unit next time.
That did not look fun at all.
Had a few cringe moments with that razor knife, good job!
Leave this man ! Don't touch any car parts more !
Cutting ? Wrl. ?
You need just Heat-gun to open the headlights !
