Tl;dr: I took this comment too seriously. 😅
At sea-level, the speed of sound is roughly 767 MPH. The fastest top fuel dragster has been 338.48 MPH. They have a long way to go before they even reach that half-way point of 383.5 down the 1000ft that they run down nowadays. If they went back to the traditional 1320ft and switched to turbos, I could see them hitting that mark fairly easily, though I also suppose they'd probably need some new tire technology, too, to go that fast.

@@paulhfl7710 Those cars use fairly thin, metal tires, and are achieving their speeds over multiple miles on a desert floor. Top fuel dragsters need to be able to accelerate as quickly as possible, which means their tires need to be as wide, thick, and sticky as they can get them, which means metal is out of the question (at least for now?). The issue with compounds like rubber is it can only withstand so much heat before it literally starts to melt and/or come apart, and top fuel dragsters, with the speeds they're doing, are approaching the limits of rubber as we know it.

I am 64 yo and started going to Detroit Dragway and Milan Dragway in the mid 60s. My first event was in 65 according to dad. I grew up watching Sox and Martin, Big Daddy Don Garlits, the Ramchargers, Gene Snow, Snake and Mongoose, Kenny Bernstein and the like. Pitted for the Rebellious Dodge Hemi super stock. Ran a 72 Duster bracket racing for three seasons. Like you I did my absolute best to never miss a race. Personally I was Always excited about the burnout from a top fuel or funny car. You got the heart thumping, ground shaking but it lasted longer. Especially in the early days of standing near the guard rail.

I remember waking up at 6 o'clock in the morning. Going to the track and getting sprayed with Nitro before 7 AM. I am 39 years old.. It's been in my blood since birth. ​@@HundredSlotThis one is commonly known as the funny car to my knowledge, the long one you are talking about spits out about 20,000 hp and is faster. Commonly called topfuel, idk if they have more specific names

​@diabl3917 top fuel dragster uses the same nitro hemi engine that the funny car does. They just get a big advantage in aerodynamics due to their needle like design.
Also a fun fact about top fuel is that the 11,000 horsepower is an estimation based off of weight and trap speed because there is no engine dyno strong enough to contain that ammount of force, and the engines are so volatile that they likely wouldn't hold together long enough to get any consistent data

If you've never been to an NHRA race, i highly recommend it. Even when you're watching them launch, even when you expect the explosive take-off, it still startles you. As those cars fly past you, you can feel your organs rattling. When they gain that full traction, it is difficult to process that the car is already crossing that finish line.

I've worked several T/F events, and they shake the ground. Its your bones they rattle!! Clear vision is impossible. And even with in the ear and over-the-ear protection, A Rob Zombie concert with no protection couldn't ring my ears so many days after!

In fact they are almost flat at the start to have maximum grip surface and they expand with gyroscopic forces so they have a bigger radius (so longer transmission ratio) and a smaller contact patch. That why they've got no gearbox
