    Lets say you're exploring a planet 20,000ly from SOL and you crash your ship speeding through a canyon. Assuming you eject and survive then you need to activate your SOS distress signal. It could be some time before it is picked up by a passing ship. Rescue missions would be great, either rescuing actual players or AI.
    Reward money increases over distance.
    If it could be done then any player stranded on an alien world awaiting rescue would have to go Bear Grylls and fend off local tribes and animals. The player could be long dead before you get there....or maybe it's a trap!

      Tom Mulligan This would make for some awesome gameplay! I feel a lot of opportunities like this would be opened up if Frontier enabled us to have multiple commanders on a single account.

      TheNaut131 that will have to wait. the next expansion is non atmospheric worlds first (that you'll have to pay the price of a whole game for). later on you will get to land on worlds with atmospheres (which you presumably will have to pay the price of another game for, again)
      E:D is an amazing game but they're turning it into an outrageously expensive cash cow.

      Thunderbird Anthares That is incorrect, buying Horizons is a season pass for the whole next year in which the first planet types mentioned is the first of those expansions.
      Seeing we got 5 expansions in the first year of Elite and most likely just as much this time around makes the price of Horizons a pretty damn good deal.

    Things Elite Dangerous is lacking that i would love to see implemented over time :
    (I know some of these points are just not really realistic/plausible)
    1- Walking around ships and stations.
    2- Multi-Crew ships. Or turreted ships.
    3- Some Crafting, Weapons and components for ships with little randomness to the stats.
    4- Some kind of guild/group system, people profiting together or waging war against each other or trade with other guilds/groups increasing the social aspect in the game.
    5- Land Base and station building as community goals, group/guild building. Possibility to ''own'' a station or system and defend it against pirates and players outside of occupied space. (I mean there are enough stars for this...) They could even push it further making it possible to defend/possess more than one system as long as your group can gather resources or pay upkeep.
    6- Resources extraction from land bases and/or low orbit stations near gas giants.
    7- Real time/hourly NPC creation/expansion of stations/settlements via community goals. (Right now they need to implement this themselves and reboot servers i think)
    8- Paying NPCs with a salary to gather resources, or create a small fleet and upgrade them etc.
    9- More randomized missions, exploring missions, artifacts/ruins to find and explore.
    10- NPC and Players ships leave a wreck that persist (at least some time) so it can be salvaged for resources or credits with drones. Even some ships specialized for this task. SALVAGING !
    11- Being able to attack and destroy existing stations OR damage them, impacting economy.(With a large group obvly.)
    12- Munition subsystems or allowing to transport additional munitions in your cargo hold to make ballistic weapons more viable for longer fights.
    13- Ground based combat, missions, pirates, ruins, caves and loot.
    14- Some rare anomalies to discover in space for science, scanning them etc.
    15- More diplomatic possibilities for the Alliance, Alliance ships and ranks.
    16- Implementation of 2-3 different and secret alien races, hidden, hard to find. If someone discover an alien race by chance this would be historical, we might never find some of them too.
    17- More bug corrections and lower the ramming damage, especially on bigger ships.
    18- Alternatives to the Anaconda, more ships of this size with each their own specialization.
    20- Drone or carrier ships, fighting with unmanned drones and anti-drone modules.
    (realistically drones would be irl the best choice for combat. Because humans can only handle a limited G-force. Unmanned crafts can maneuver freely, turn faster and would be more realistic and effective in space fights). These drones would be smaller than an eagle. Low dmg but annoying against a ships without anti-drone defenses.
    21- Hacking, ships or modules that can hack enemies ships to temporarily disable a random subsystem. Each ships could have different values against hacking and possibility to equip modules to help against hacking or boost hacking.
    22- Stealth ships, ships that have low shield or armor but can withstand silent running much longer and/or some optical camouflage. Of course it should not be a perfect camouflage but making it easier to blend with the background and harder to keep a lock-on/hud information on a stealthy target. I find Elite to be lacking in the stealthy/ambush department.
    23- A favorite list, save systems into a favorite list with a small note/description so it is easier to come back to it later and remember what is interesting in that location later.
    24- Some custom/unique hud for certain ships.
    25- More ship paint, some ships have none or very few paint job available.
    26- Build/Deploy/Destroy satellites and use them to gather more information/science and potential resource extraction points on planets.
    27- Talking about science, a new vocation : Scientific. Gather science from ruins/anomalies/planets for credits or unique upgrades. Even maybe a specialized ship for this task.
    28- A bit of a stretch again, but allowing players/groups to terraform planets over long period of time, increasing its population and quality. Tax from owned planets depending on quality and population.
    29- Very hard to find rare upgrades/modules from artifacts or Alien Technology/upgrades/weapons or even ships. Only possible from exploration. Demanding serious investments to create the upgrade.

      +Promethor This all should have been in the game at release. this game doesn't look finished, despite them saying that it is for the most part. I think the closest to that we'll get will be No Man's Sky, but that game is going to be a disappointment, too. There'll be a lot of exploration, but no fighting and no interaction with other players... why can't devs make the perfect game? It's so goddamn simple, but instead they mix it all up.

    I'll mention the same thing here that I said on another vid talking about this subject. Imagine being able to track down a bounty hiding in a starport or in some planetary settlement amongst other NPCs. The chase/battle could start out on foot, but, if he or she escaped and made it to their ship the pursuit could continue into space. Moments like that could really make the galaxy feel more alive. Make high profile bounties truly feel like a hunt with great pay for the work.

  • @dennisrichards2540

    The mechanics of atmospheric landing is something ive postulated before. Im think they will do something along the same lines of interdiction mechanic. If your angle of attack is too steep you will get heat damage (or explode) or if your attack angle is too shallow you will over shoot your target destination.
    Another thing I hope Braben emphasises is atmospheric flight characteristics of the ships. Id expect that ships that are small and aerodynamic like the Eagle will be the weapons of choice for atmospheric combat. I would also expect a type-9 to be an absolute pig (if not totally denied) so as to make ships like the Hauler a more desirable choice. I think this will be important because there are no real penalties for using larger ships in Elite. Ill admit ive never even flown an Eagle because in my opinion pointless when you can get a viper for a little extra.
    Planetary landing is the perfect chance to champion the smaller ship category and make them relevant again.

    • @ObsidianAnt
      @ObsidianAnt  9 лет назад

      Dennis Richards Some interesting thoughts there! I'm really looking forward to seeing if ships handle different when inside the atmosphere. Ideally, we should have a different flight model for atmospheric flight. :)

    • @matsey721
      @matsey721 9 лет назад

      Dennis Richards Agree with you Dennis (your profile pic is also awesome). Some love for the smaller ships in atmospheric flight would be great - and would maybe help explain why the eagle has wings in the first place. Although having said that it doesn't look like those wings would be effective at generating lift. Maybe the fact the mass of the smaller ships means they can manoeuvre better is enough but more reasons to fly the small ships is a good thing. The eagle is actually great fun to fly and I love the feel of the cockpit, but to be honest its not that effective a ship to spend time investing in and the Viper and Cobra are within easy reach.

    • @dennisrichards2540
      @dennisrichards2540 9 лет назад +2

      Mat Sey Tron guy sis pretty awesome haha. If Brabens previous work is anything to go by he will have a realistic explanation for aerodynamics for the ships.
      My thinking is that every planet may have its own atmospheric composition (and thickness/viscosity what ever you want to call it) and a wing has to be specifically designed for specific atmosphere. For example, if you were to design a plane for Mars for example it would resemble a glider more than a jet fighter because of the low air pressure.
      I think Braben will have the shields act as a streamlining aid of some description. after all non of the ships are particularity well suited for atmospheric flight, so if ships have shield technology that will protect it while it jumps from star to star then im sure they will have the technology to alter the shields shape to suit the atmospheric properties.
      Google the god awful 1986 'Flight of the navigator" for a decent representation of what a dynamic aerodynamic shield could work like (being a shield you would probably only notice its shape when hit by weapons fire but would explain why ships could operate in any imaginable atmosphere.

    • @toothpik00
      @toothpik00 9 лет назад

      +Dennis Richards Fly an Eagle, my friend. You will see that, for a RES bounty hunting vessel, it is far superior to the Viper. In my opinion, a good Eagle pilot should kill a good Viper pilot almost every time. Throw some burst lasers on and circle your opponent until they die as nothing, not even the Sidewinder, can outmaneuver an Eagle. The only time you should get hit in an Eagle is when you take on too many opponents, or you just make a silly error. If that happens, boost and FSD are your only option. I have taken down Pythons with my burst laser Eagle; yes it takes a long time, but the agility of the ship makes the process very enjoyable with a nice 100k+ reward at the end.
      Whatever your opinions, I recommend trying an Eagle at least once, if nothing else, you'll have fun!

    The planetary landing release will certainly be nice to look at, but I hope there's more to it than just being pretty.
    I wouldn't mind stuff like this being pushed back to fix the instancing and other bugs that have haunted the game since release. When they do PL I'd like to see a comprehensive add-on with depth including missions, combat, exploration and mining.
    For inter-atmospheric navigation / combat - we'd need at to have an artificial horizon, altimeter and compass added to the dash instrumentation.
    Expectations are high across the board so the pressures on Frontier to deliver.

    • @ArcherAC3
      @ArcherAC3 9 лет назад +2

      SJ Parkinson Yup. Also, atmospheric flight would imply in having new aerodynamic physics, maybe (if they do it and decide to add for realism sake) even stall would be a problem, so you couldn't stop and go backwards. It would be pretty cool, but there's gonna be a lot of work.

    • @TravisJamesM
      @TravisJamesM 9 лет назад +2

      SJ Parkinson Yep. I would much much much rather new chat features, ship walking, the terrible instancing problems dealt with a little and being winged up for missions by the game than any of this any time soon. Yeah, planetary landings will be cool but it is nowhere near what they should be working on IMO.

    Frankly I'm expecting planetary landings in E:D to be *better* than everything you've shown us. My interpretation of Braben's utterings on the subject is that he's very passionate and enthusiastic about it and regards it as an essential part of E:D, and that the reason they're taking their sweet time with it is (as he's said) that they want to do it *really* well.
    That motivation together with the technological possibilities shown off by these various demos bodes well I think. It will be a while yet (I'm not expecting it this year. Maybe the end of next year. I think walking around has to come first), but I hope and expect it will be great.

    In all likelihood it will end up like the base game. Infinite potential, but ultimately empty, lifeless, and unfinished.
    Personally I can't believe how much they're charging for another unfinished chunk of the game before they've even finished the work they promised to do on the base game.
    I don't buy early access games, but I feel like Frontier duped me into doing just that with this game. Elite Dangerous is an early access, extremely limited shared-instance game masquerading a finished MMO. $60 expansions will dwindle the community down to nothing, and milk the few that remain for everything they got.

    I would like to discover alien civilisations in their early tech age, similar to Earth today but have the location protected. That way the option to attack them would still be in the game but in truth the average explorer would likely only want to observe. People who wanted to attack them would have to go out and find them first and I doubt they could be bothered.

    Some interesting ideas i thought:
    - colonization: people can fund the development of colonies in the planet by paying rent for a apartment, cargo storage, garages, etc (based on location of them in the city, quality, etc) and by doing missions offered by that settlement. This would apply for existing places created by the devs but it'd be cool to be able to create a settlement on desert planets too (with some limitations of course like just 1 or few for planet, a certain ammount of players funding its creation from zero, if not EVERYONE would have his own colony without cooperating hehe). There'd be various types of cities to choose for creation (like the ones in the shots you showed in the video) and the city grows procedurally, you cannot choose youself where you place the buildings. Types of cities could also mean different targets: military, scientific, civillian or industrial outpost could mean having some dedicated missions there comparent to more generic settlements.
    - renting: i think it'd be cool to have some personal space both on planerary than space outposts. When you rent something you'll choose a rough location like "luxury apartment on that central huge tower in the middle of the colony" and the servers will see available space there (if we'll see other players places). Storage place could mean also putting resources collected there for longer term strategies.
    - colony's planetary missions: too add variety i'd love to have a set of planetary ships that opens up to special missions like races on the planets (in canyons, etc maybe even multiplayer ones too), transporting things between colonies on the same planet or inside the city, collecting flora and fauna for researchers or companies (illegal jobs too). This would open up to alternative things if the player want to change wind for a bit
    - ruins exploration: small lost settlements can be found in planets and you can find resources there. They can be alien or human outposts and it'd be interesting to find objects to decorate the ship when you'll navigate it inside or in the apartments. Of course there could be mission objects to retrieve or lore about what happened or tips to open up new secret missions somewhere else.

    The main things for me, I think Fronteir should make happen if they can, are planet landings / surface exploration and activities. The ability to move about the interior of the ship and board other ships, and I think it would be cool if there were more ship options on the table, perhaps larger models. Maybe not as large as capital ships (although would be cool). They could introduce the mother of all cargo specialists, a super freighter, or a multi-crewed frigate of some kind.

  • @toothpik00

    All very realistic speculation, ObsidianAnt. I hope all this comes to fruition as well. I think Frontier would do well to purchase or somehow utilise some of these fantastic new procedural generation technologies that other people are developing. This would surely streamline their expansion rollout and take some of the workload off them.

    Just seeing some of that concept art is leaving me drooling at the thought of planetary landings... All these worlds we just fly past now without giving a second thought. Just think, one day you could actually go down there, fly around the city skylines of your home planet, go visit the capitals of the galactic nations, experience the cultural differences between the Empire and the Federation, and really see how a high tech core system system differs from a small backwater colony out on the fringes of civilization.
    Planetary landings will give this game something that it truly needs.

    I have great ideas for frontier to implement space legs and atmosphere landing. at first they have to add feature to space legs like interacting with thing and owning some sort of defense la gun phasers etc. then for planet that are advanced like earth it would be unauthorized to directly land on it (due to the amount of work it would take to build it.), so we would have to dock at a space station assigned to a city and request a taxi to bring us down to that particular city. then for planet that are newly colonized or not colonized by humains, but that are accessible by atmospheric landing. we would be able to directly land anywhere our ships are able to and open our cargo bay (for big ship) or just simply our exit and get our vehicles out on the surface to go hunting for (meat, mining, or exploration"like collecting samples from diffrents element) others could also find artifacs, ruins and maybe with new 2.4 thargoids, hostile species and private company security. the ruins could have valuable item to sell to the black market. this would also be where having a gun get into gameplay. it would be cool going with crew friends into a sort of raid for a rewarding loot at the end. for traders. when landing if there ship is big enough you could walk to your cargo area(where the srv usually is) and request for a vehicle for mining and storage, maybe even limpets. and for storage problems of these vehicles we could simply instead of having it direcly stored inside the ship, you only have to go to you cargo console and request the ship to build it if you have the available mats. of course if everything goes well and you bring the vehicle back to the ship before leaving, then mats can be re-use to build another one, but if something would happen forcing you to evac asap and leave the mats on the planet, then you would have to buy or far for it. I think this would bring a lot of immersion to elite and hope, if it comes , that we get something similar.
    sorry for that long text

    I would love a sub-economy based on scientific exploration and surveying, similar to how you can make a living being an explorer. It would open up a new kind of subset of exploration where instead of trying to scan high-value targets and map various star systems, you could go in-depth on particularly interesting worlds and explore the chemistry and biosphere.
    I'd also like to be able to retain the catalogue of places I've explored. It'd be good to be able to flip back through the many planets and stars and asteroid belts I've scanned and be able to revisit useful ones I've already found, since most of them are in systems whose names are unrememberable alphabet soup.

    The Pyramids in Giza in Egypt reflects the constellation of Orion. To get the detail in planets some kind of software system that mirrors the nearby stars , planetary detail like clouds or outlines of rock feature could generate some of the vast data needed to generate a convincing complex surface structure. This may help create unique planets or moons in the Elite Dangerous Galaxy .

    Hi ObsidianAnt. Great video series. keep up the good work.
    In answer to your previous comment, I guess we know now. I'm very excited by this news and I must say a little pleasantly surprised. I was expecting the Gamescom announcement to be something along the lines of 'The Thargoids are coming...'
    I really expected the planetary landings module to be a little further down the line so took me by surprise,
    I'd love to hear your thoughts on the announcement and how you see it unrolling. Particularly the reentry sequence mini-mechanic and the buggy concept.
    I see you called it right on how they would introduce it; atmosphere less rocky worlds initially and expand on that, so kudos+1 for that.
    I do wish they'd adjust the depth of NPC contact though and give some life and depth to the encounters. Having a harmless pilot in an eagle tear my Imperial Clipper out of a nice cruise and tell me 'Im gonna boil you up.....' Gggrrrr

    Just keep in mind that those engines he showed off with all that detail were only for creating detailed planets nothing else so all the power can be used to render all of that detail on the surfaces. Elite has a lot under it's hood so don't expect as much level of detail as what he has shown here. Though I'm sure they will focus on making it look really good anyway.

    This all looks nice and sounds good, but I have my reservations. I, for one, do not really enjoy the current Exploration mechanic, it seems empty to me, and feels more like 'sighseeing' as opposed to exploring. (I am by no means trying to insult anyone's enjoyment, its just not for me as it is)... I have a feeling that Landings will simply be more 'sightseeing' coupled with the same lifeless Mission system that we currently have.... I hope I'm wrong..........

    There are so many things that Frontier could do with this. I recently saw the latest gameplay of No Man's Sky, which looked great, although a little too basic for Elite purposes, but a procedurally generated universe would be the way forward I think, it's a lot more doable these days as we have seen.
    The next few years will be interesting to say the least. I just want to fly out and dig holes in planets.....is that too much to ask?

    I believe re-entry shouldn't be dangerous. It should be simple and passive. One should have to TRY and have a failed atmospheric entry. Why? It's over 1000 years in the future. Plenty of advanced technology exists in the story, and some of that is functional in gameplay. Something like re-entry should be trivial for mankind in a thousand years.

      There's a difference between atmospheric disintegration and solar disintegration. Atmospheric disintegration is based off of drag, solar disintegration is based off of pure heat. Traveling superluminal into an environment with an actual atmosphere would disintegrate the ship in mere seconds.

      I think that would be nice. But I'm realy curious about how they would make it. I mean the Problem will be, that those reentry effects happen due to the high speed of orbital spacecraft. If you don't fly in SC the speed of the Ships in Elite is actually only like 400 m/s at maximum for the fastest (with boost). So it seems like they have something anti-gravitational going on so far, as you can get like very close to a star without falling on it.
      So if they want to add reentry they need to add an anti-gravitational System you could turn of. then you would need the ability to accelerate to at least 10 times the speed the ships are capable at the moment and THEN you would get reentry effects quite realistic :D

    • @simsch97
      @simsch97 9 лет назад

      Well actually I think the biggest Problem is, that the speed is limited so far. so it is like flying a plane or driving a car. The speed of a spacecraft would not be limited outside the atmosphere. Atleast not to sonic speed or so, as 300m/s is quite close to the speed of sound.
      But removing this aspect would break a big part of the gamemechanic with faster ships able to hunt slower ones.
      So it would be very interresting to see how they would do it.

    • @digistruct0r
      @digistruct0r 9 лет назад

      +keler2012 Pretty sure the lore says that normal cruise speed is max possible speed for a certain ship to maneuvere without breaking its current orbit. So when you're pulling 300m/s next to Mikhail Gorbachev (or whatever the station orbiting Earth was called) you're doing about 7 km/s in orbital velocity at the same time as well.
      And in supercruise you're not bound to any concept of orbit, although you're still affected by gravity. My guess is for landing you're going to switch from orbital speed to surface speed or something like that. I just hope that it would be a bit less straightforward than docking at a station, so there's actual challenge and possibility to lose your ship.
      Speaking of re-entry heating - maybe you'd have to install special plating on your ship, or your current shields will double as heat shields as well (lasers are thermic damage after all).

    Here's another reason: you don't have a fuel scoop. No station in sight, but just enough fuel to land on a planet you can breathe on. Perform an emergency landing, walk away alive and rejoice the fact you won't choke to death in space where no one can hear you scream. Now all you gotta do is send a distress beacon, hope it gets picked up and survive until then. Really hoping Frontier development puts that capability in game.

    I hope we will see ships, fleeing from combat, dashing through the atmosphere of a planet, hoping to find cover in a canyon, with an intense chase in this canyon, and i like to see huge cities. The problem with such approaches is, that you have maybe 1-2 cities on a planet and so much empty space. That would never happen in a highly populated system. They really need to step it up and at least announce a date and start hyping us for it. No Man's Sky is coming and the actual beta for Star Citizen is supposed to be coming at the end of the year. If FD have not made their move until then, there will be a drop in player base 100%. I myself am thinking of switching to Star Citizen beta once it's out, if it's good enough, and there are no news from FD. I love ED, but the game for now is far too grindy and exploration isn't that interesting (it's just going to a system scanning, next system - repeat while listening to a podcast or watching a movie ). The Combat is fun, but not fun enough when you farm bounties for hours and hours without any real goal or reward beyond credits. Even worse with the new Powers, they are probably the biggest grind I have ever seen, and the rewards are even worse. I'm sorry, I love the game, but FD should realise that grinding for credits to buy bigger ships only works for so long, before people get bored to death. If FD continues with the Grind everything approach, I will most definitely switch to Star Citizen (here's hoping with almost 86 million for development of that game, they have something more rewarding and interesting to show).

      i backed SC and, since i kept hanging around, the Holy Christ Roberts recommended we back Elite... i actually didnt, but i kept track of it, and "pre-ordered" it few days before release, hesitantly and against my better judgement...
      well... ED turned out to be exactly what i expected... i spent ~1200$ on SC because... reasons... but the cash i regret spending is the 60$ on ED...
      I WANT to like this game, but its not letting me... its skull-crushingly boring and while it definitely has good elements, its just a big poor design choice... playing the alpha of SC right now is more fun actually, even though i cant do it forever since there is much less content
      cant wait for SC modules to start dropping already ( NEVER COUNT ON ESTIMATED RELEASE DATES with SC ) - it keeps getting delayed, but the REAL gameplay footage is amazing.... SC cinematic trailers... not so much

    I'd like to see atmospheric planets (including gas giants) take into account surface pressure and temperature which could implode your ship. Basically, this would prevent you from going too deep in a gas giant and keep you off the surface of some planets like Venus.

    Also, the developers don't seem to make enough things to do that are enjoyable to do on their own. This is why people call things a "grind", because it is an unenjoyable task that is only done to achieve some other goal. Working towards goals is fine, but doing the things needs to be fun (or interesting) on their own.

      bpansky i can see them making planetary landing, but they will be doing a lot of duplicating. I feel like majority of the planets will just look almost exactly the same as each other, just like the space stations already do.
      it is possible to do. but its far fetched for them as devs to sit down and really put in the detail for millions of planets. I think they will only put unique details in certain planets.

    Why not use planets as gateways to other game-worlds? Being able to land in a spaceport, perhaps in a city, and buy a "pass" to enable you to walk about on the world's surface...worlds such as Elder Scrolls Online's Nirn, for example. The spaceport may be on an isolated island, with Elite-specific NPCs and missions; you could take a ship to the main continent of Tamriel, and either participate in the standard mission lines of ESO, or pursue complex mission chains and quests specifically for pilots from another world...and on completion of your quest objectives, return to your ship with your rare cargo.
    Of course, such missions could be done on Frontier's own worlds, but this would save them from having to develop the walkabout aspects of E:D right away, which it seems, sadly, they are challenged by.

    Interesting video. I played Frontier (and Frontier First Encounters) and I remember doing "bombing runs" and these habitation domes you could fligh throuh.
    FD is sadly set up for disappointment again, simply because expectations are "No Mans Sky"-high. I really want to explore planets like in No Mans Sky. This is a already a very tall order, as Frontier takes the Hard Sci-Fi approch, so everthing must be grounded in reality (in contrast to NMS).
    -- For exporation I am wishing for the discovery of new species and biomes. Vehicles would be great for that. Imagine an explorer carrying a buggy in a special cargo hold and drive it around. (Or better yet a submarine and drop it into a water world and essentially play "Subnautica" on it.).
    -- I guess some people also want a FPS component, I personally do not care about. But maybe passenger ships then finally become viable, as you could serve as a troop transport, maybe even transporter for tanks etc.
    -- Some thing which always bothers me in "trading games" is that I want to "produce" something and have a "company". So ultimately claiming a planet (or some space on it) estabilishing a colony on it, building buildings on it (minecraft style) and mine and manufacture on it would be great.
    If I get even half of that I would be super happy. We will probably get 10% of that, which would be ok. Good thing I have the lifetime expansion pass.

      René Wuttke Frontier Hard Sci Fi? I hope you mean "Frontier First Encounters", and not "Frontier Developments" by that. In ED I can fly several times the speed of light in my Asp, so I'm actuialy using several infinite amounts of energy, whatever that means. Also, ships in space don't bank at turns, rate of pitching/rolling is unrelated to your speed, speed is something relative, not absolute, and maximum velocity doesn't exist. ED is fantasy, not hard sci fi.

    I really do hope they make planetary landings far, far, (FAR) more complex than the only current means of landing: space stations. For me, being able to dock at 1 out of 3 starports in an entire star system in less than 30 seconds is incredibly unrealistic even for a game in which realism is not top priority. Unfortunately, in order for it to be made as I would like it would need to be completely reworked. Hoping for a full rework of space stations is an impossible dream at best, so I can only hope that planetary landings are at least more difficult, if no more complex.

    May I ask how Frontier will be able to make all of this happen? Because there's million of million of different planets in the game. As you said you want "verity" well won't it be to much for them to handle? Or is there some sort of engine which makes this massive expansion even possible? (Because I know I want to be flying through space entertaining different planets with ever-changing environments and also different species of plants and animals)

      Archie Westwell Procedural generation can indeed handle it. The problem is that they are using this technique in a shallow way, which makes all of their space stations look like they were built in the same decade by the same designer (very unrealistic).

      Archie Westwell as bpansky says it will be done by procedural generation. Take a look at No Man's Sky for what is possible.

    Do we know if the whole planet will be open, or just certain areas.

      Tiparium Should be the entire planet.

    Me personally would like to have giant carrier ships for factions and Guilds that would move around and you could land in i and refuel and walk around.

    gas mining?
    inhabited planets wont be easy, but giant outposts should be placed eventually, growing over time withing profitable systems - we all know there'll be one's complaining about, and expecting city-worlds, like Coruscant.
    whatever size though, must be at one to one scale, and interesting enough to explore, or should battles take place.

    space engine level of variation would be fabulous, but it takes that engine quite a while to build up the LOD on each planet and uses ridiculous levels of system resources once it is at full detail. My PC sounds like a jet engine running that program.

      Richard Cahill I've noticed this. Makes me wonder about the difference between performance on Space Engine vs Outerra.

    8:57 Frontier to be accused of copying? If you go by that logic, than all games with any sort of space flight should be accused of copying Elite! No I am sure it is OK in any case, I just hope they implement procedural mission generator. David himself talked about these missions in Early dev videos.
    About exploration and pictures: I made suggestion on forums some time ago. FD should make some dedicated website similar to WoW armoury. This could serve as a personal overview of every commander where it would show stats of particular CMDR in game but also could show pictures from CMDRs. Imagine if CMDR can somehow manipulate these and from albums and publicly link them - it would be really awesome. Of course, explorers would have an extra layer of prestige for the pictures.

    I think we should be able to walk around our ships at the least
    Do you know if they are going to make that happen?

      Paradoxical Productions Yes we will be able to walk around at some point. But it won't be in 2015 or 2016.
