I was going to go on with a long nostalgic post about Blizzard of old and Blizzard of now, but I lost heart halfway through. The bottom line is, Blizzard and many other companies across various industries for whatever reason, have decided to actively despise their core/traditional audiences. When you despise someone, you surely dont want to meet them face to face. They might love our money, but they mightily hate us. "Games made by gamers for gamers" died over a decade ago, and what remains amounts to little more than souless bean counters who see you as a potential "renter" and nothing more.

Could see it miles away for No Rest for the Wicked to get a mixed launch. It was pretty much marketed at a mix of classic ARPG and Souls. Well, all the classic ARPG fans expect gear to nullify all challenge in the end and souls fans expect to skill it through. It's a nice game though, just marketing was a bit of a miss.

They wouldn't even have the D4 expansion to show off. We're getting a deep dive into it in the summer, and it will potentially be released before normal Blizzcon times. The next WoW expansion will already be released too, so unless they had some hidden game to announce, it will just be a couple new seasons for various games.

I like No Rest for the Wicked, but it's definitely NOT an arpg. It's like 10% arpg, 10% survival game and 80% souls-like.
I've been having a lot of fun though, but IMHO the current main issue of the game is performances; the game is currently more demanding at 1080p lowest setting (performance) than Cyberpunk 2077 at medium-high settings. I'm playing at 1080p performance setting on a 5950X & RTX 3080, and it's BARELY playable, with crazy stutters and very wildly varying and low framerate.
My second gripe would be that the game is pretty unresponsive and clunky. One of the main reason of that might be solved by button remapping if they do it right, because "hold" buttons to trigger differents actions inherently add some delay (duh). The fact that run and roll are tied together completely baffle me and makes combat feels more unresponsive than it needs to be.

11:15 thats exactly what good Soulslikes do. Even normal enemies are challenging (at least at first), until you figure them out.
About the blizzcon thing - honestly the BlizzCon Spirit died when they started milking us, their loyal fans. It became cynical at that point and it was noticeable. Esp. on the years they had no real news. Yes, a company is supposed to make money but they could have wined and dined us first, like in the "old days" of Blizzcon. The last like 8 or 10 years were mainly "give us money" first and hollow talk about being a family and stuff like that.
And that doesnt work at some point.
Yes it might just be that we, (former) Blizzard Fans needed to grow up, granted.

I get it that Blizzcon would be kind of boring and pointless event when they have nothing to announce for this year. I get that.
But still, the way I see it Blizzcon is not just a forum where you announce your new upcoming games. It's much, much more than that.
It's an event where you can meet up and exchange words with their most loyal fans. It's basically an event where you can celebrate your games together with your community.
Blizzard skipping Blizzcon just sends me the message that the higherups at Blizzard don't really care about their community, because having celebration event with them would only cost them their precious money.
But then again, what do I care.
Blizzard has degenerated so much over the past decade, that it's hard for me to get excited about anything that they do anymore.
Modern day Blizzard is just a big 'L' factory to me, as everything that they touch seems to turn into shit these days. They went from "Midas touch" into "Mierdas touch".

D4 cosmetic shop is a mess, and it's not just a cost issue, though that's a massive issue. You have no idea what is available because it rotates, and some sets have three parts, but knowing this is nearly impossible.

  • @SmotheredByLove
    @SmotheredByLove 6 месяцев назад +5

Regarding Wicked and the question of it being an ARPG or a Soulslike I think it really depends on what people value in either genre. Some, like Rhykker, will value rng loot hunting as a core element of ARPGs, but others, like me, will say the combat is a crucial element. And because of the Wicked is not an ARPG either Soulslike combat but rather a Soulslike game with ARPG gear systems. And while pedantic, that distinction matters a lot to me, as Darksouls games don’t interest me much.
If ARPGs need to evolve into something new, I’d love to see a game take notes from movement shooters, with combat being a series of well executed moves that build up momentum and power, building you up to the speed we known in current ARPGs, rather than the slower reactive combat of a Soulslike

As someone who likes both gernes of games and have wanted something like this for a while, I find that it really is a misnomer to categorize it as either gerne with elements from the other. It really is a middle ground where design decisions fall into 1 of 3 buckets largely: Uses soulslike conventions, uses ARPG conventions, fuses conventions. Combat is animation and stamina driven like souls games. leveling uses more souls like stats and gear often resembles more souls like gear. Checkpoints are more a fused convention of bonfires/waypoints/townportals that honesty feels really awful. death drops weapon durability which is more ARPG. no exp loss on death is ARPG. Enemies don't respawn on death is ARPG. Random loot is ARPG. Crafting and altering weapons is ARPG. enviromental hazards is more souls like. unlimited potions (food) that can be prepared/bought on the fly is ARPG. Harvesting resources is more survival than either gerne but due to the crafting systems in ARPGs I'd say leans more ARPG. Money being separate from exp is more ARPG. Daily quests are more ARPG. I'm sure there is a lot more I could divide out here if I thought about it, but the point is the designs don't particularly align very well with either genre's standard conventions.
For this to be a proper soulslike I think some of the following would need to change in most souls players eyes: food is replaced with a flask that replenishes on resting at a checkpoint, non-elite/boss enemies respawn on resting at a checkpoint, dying drops all experience towards the next level and/or money which can be recovered at the location of death and is lost permanently if the player dies again before recovering, leveling can only be done at checkpoints.
I'm not saying these changes should be made but the deviation from these conventions in favor of more ARPG conventions make the game feel very different and not like a soulslike. More like it borrowed ideas from souls games but went and made its own thing.

I think dark souls games have a good solution to the builds/stats problem, they added initial classes, it makes the player to be able to have some sort of decission on what to go for since the beginning but had the freedom to change it later. One thing I like even less than this problem is the amount of weapons this game has using weird stats like having dex/int two handed hammers, i guess they were trying to give thr player the option to try different playstyles even if they were stat-locked into a build and not being able to respec, but this frame for me beats the whole idea of having a stat system, if u can end up playing with any weapon class having any stat then why having different stats at all

    • @gardian06_85
      @gardian06_85 6 месяцев назад +1

this doesn't sound like a "philosophical" ambiguity or disjoint but rather an "etymology" (similar to the Rogue-like/Rogue-Lite situation) where "ARPG" at its core is about an action game with a RPG style progressing where "Souls games" have a high focus on moment to moment Action while allowing the player to build their character with RPG systems through level up decisions, exploration path, and weapons/gear. It was Diablo that tried to pigeon hole the achronym to be "loot first" as a gateway to killing dozens, hundreds, or thousands of enemies in flashes of pretty colors which can be traced to Diablo 1 Sorceress, and many end game builds in Diablo 2, but most people try to credit to Diablo 3 while even Path of Exile and many "modern Diablo Style ARPGs" perpetuate "I click button and kill hundreds of things in a flash of colors". No Rest for the Whicked like Dark Siders 2, and Nioh tries to incorporate a higher focus on Itemization and Gearing, but apparently because they have a "specific camera style" now it is being compared to Diablo. If you give an over the shoulder camera to Diablo 2 does it fundamentally change it from being an ARPG?

I recently started reading all of the Diablo books, comics, game manuals, ebooks, and short stories. Just finished Legacy of Blood and doing Lord of Destruction and Tales of Sanctuary next. So far everything I've read would be great as a TV show, but I think the Sin War trilogy makes the most sense. It'd be pretty cheap to produce for the first season, and then if it does well they could up the funding for season two and three (I'd just do three seasons, one per book) which would be needed because of the crazy (and awesome) shit that happens in those books. The biblical-like characters and plot (son of god sacrifices himself for the human race, hello) that will resonate with most western audiences and the tie-in with Lilith and Inarius and the Diablo 4 story seems to make it an obvious choice to me. Market it as the "prequel" to the Diablo 4 story and it would definitely sell even more units of D4. just my thoughts. also the Sin War trilogy was great and I recommend everyone check it out. Super easy to get through in a week or two. Legacy of Blood not quite as good but still fun story about Bartuc/Horazon, with a heavy D2 influence. Could easily run that one as a mini series just for funsies.

No. It was diablo. It was actually really fun. The fighting wasnt souls like, but it was more important to dodge, to learn patterns.
Now, we are right back to D3. Either we 1-shot kill everything, or we get 1-shot. Or we have so much défense that we just absorb all dmg and wait while the bosses life goes down.
Early D4 was better. It still had a Diablo feel. Great maps. Fun combat, just.... slower. Things have been changing non stop for the worst. Adding teleports to dungeons was a mistake. It made things just like greater rifts. Changing events to save à couple seconds left and right made this go right back down to d3 ultra speed running through content. To me, that sucks.
We went from D1 to D2, much changed for the best. From D2 to D3, everything was changed positive and négatives came out from all that.
D3 to D4 was a way to come back closer to D2. Slower game, more farming, and.... we lost it all.
As i said, D4 is now D3 v2.0. Because all that brought innovation or changes were taken out or adapted to please the "majority" which was in fact, just the louder group.
I will still play D4 once season 4 comes around... or maybe the first DLC. But i am definitly playing wicked and last epoch instead while i wait.
D4 has some of the best lore in gaming out there.
But 11 years of D3 was enough. I wanted a new game, new mechanics, new vibes. Not just a reskin, with visual updates and the same boring grind loop all over again.
What was the point of à huge open world map if we dont use it because we teleport from dungeon to dungeon to max exp gain? So many things are gone that made D4 its own new thing. Its à shame.
Its just my opinion. But i also know im not alone thinking this way.

I would like, just once, to get a game with a lot of inventory management, that has systems to make it tolerable or even enjoyable. Looter shooters and ARPGs still haven't managed it. Borderlands players are still gimped by a system designed for whatever you call people who use consoles without a mouse and keyboard and are inevitably going to *have* to suffer to get it done and it's been one of the biggest complaints about the games since the first one. *shrugs* I feel like you could clone pretty much any of those games, just give it satisfying looting and inventory setup, and you'd have a massive hit.

The first time I had a rewarding experience playing a Souls-like was with Elden Ring. The dungeon system, the saves and how fast you can get back to where you were after dying were the main qualities that set it apart from DS and Bloodborne, which I've tried before but never ever considered playing for real. Haven't tried NRFTW yet, but I'm still hoping it never, ever becomes the template for ARPGs as is being suggested. It would make the genre awfully stale.

  • @Deiwulf

Personally, the main draw for souls games is the tailored quality experience, everything is thematic and connected, including the loot, and rng would just ruin the whole feel. While in arpg it sort of fits cause of endless loot pianiatas.

My problem with No Rest For The Wicked is it was never presented as a soulslike. Not once did they ever call it that that I am aware of. I asked multiple times on X and the Steam forums if the game would have multiple difficulties with no answer. The day the game came out I broke down and asked fellow players on Steam and one of them told me it had multiple difficulties, so I bought it through their RUclips affiliates program and got an extra 5 bucks off, which sadly means no refund for a mis advertised game.
Now on to my reason why the games need multiple difficulties. I have eye sight issues. A stigmatism in my right eye and diabetic retinopathy in my left eye, I have what are called floaters that can blur or obscure my vision. I can't read animations that well which make parrying, blocking, and properly dodging much harder to do. This leads to frustration that can't be overcome. The older I get the worse my vision will be.
I have made recommendations on the Steam forums and X with no response from the developers. Suggestions like adding an Arkham style UI element that tells you when to block and or parry. Or better readability to when an attack must be dodged. You know accessibility options.
At the very least they could do is offer refunds for the game to those who bought it directly from them.
ARPGs are one of my favorite genres hope Blizzard, Grinding Gear, Crate Entertainment, and other ARPG devs don't go down this route. ARPG have been one of the most accessible games ever made. I would hate to see some of my favorite games be turned into soulslikes. Hell I'm still waiting for someone to make a turn based looter strategy tactical rpg with the production values of Blizzard, GGG, or Crate Entertainment.

why are you more important than us?
if you can complete the game you can just scoff at anybody else and say "im just as good as you".
this devalues everyone else achievements if the standards is lowered intentionally for the minority.
you need to live within your means. if you physically cannot keep up with the combat then you need to start playing games that are more suitable for your needs, and not force everyone else to change just for you. thats unfair.

NRFTW is 90% a soulslike game and 10% an ARPG. For me its basically an isometric soulslike rpg. And thats ok. I think what Ibarra said is not true at all. ARPGs dont have to evolve into soulslikes to stay relevant. The core philosophy of an ARPG is that it is mindless hack and slash of many monsters, not methodical slow stuff. I actually think that Diablo 4 is the correct evolution of ARPGs, that is have a big open world with random events and procedurally generated dungeons. They just need to get now the content right because the base is good.

A lot of games fall into the category ARPG
Action Roleplaying Game, that is what it means.
Most MMO's fit into that category, we just choose to put them into the MMO category and a lot of games in this category aren't even massive :/
The souls games are also ARPG's, souls like is a term that came later for one certain mechanic, the bonfire.
Games can have multiple categories they fit into, just like some music can.

If a game makes me feel as though I've wasted talent/skill/ability points by making respeccing hard or expensive to the point that I feel the easiest way to do that is to make a new character and start from the beginning then I'm done with that game and system.

Vikings: Wolves of Midgard did the whole "slow ARPG" thing years ago, not as hard as a true souls-like but with a focus on move sets in combat and the such. Doing an isometric souls-like but not so difficult has been done. It bombed, sadly (I loved it). Warhammer Inquisitor did slower paced combat too and had to relaunch with a 2.0 version that made the game much faster paced in order to get positive reviews. It worked but showed again that the ARPG fanbase is too conditioned now for wanting speedrun content. Not sure how to break that cycle of expectation and failure for games which try something different.

Wicked's problem is how much the devs talked about an ARPG with some Souls elements when in reality it's pretty much exactly the other way round. It feels like that resulted in a lot of players feeling frustrated about not getting what they were expecting the game to be and some criticism about a level of false advertising seems justified. However at the same time it's a gorgeous game full of creatiity and it deserves to gather a devoted fanbase. I myself prefer to enjoy *playing* a game instead of investing time and effort *working* a game, thus I refunded it. After doing WoW raiding for over 15 years, I've never had that itch to play another genre of game that required dozens if not hundreds of attempts on any particular boss. I LOVE that aspect of WoW, but it's designed to be very team oriented which adds many layers of complexity that has always been lacking for me in the solo variants that the souls games offer. That being said, making an aarpg that makes both gearing up and combat slow, incredibly punishing doesn't seem to mesh well for me. It seems to capture a very specific overlapping audience between these 2 styles of games.

I've finished the endgame content for No Rest for the Wicked and it's gameplay is not, and I don't think it's possible to make it, fast enough to be considered an ARPG just because of the combat style. Also, being punished for sloppy play is not a prob in my eyes...it bring a pretty good middle ground between hardcore and softcore. My issues with the game are minor....how far the camera is from your character and or no ability to rotate it...and the restriction on portaling to/from waypoints.

My guess is that the cancellation has nothing to do with having something to show, I think that there has been a huge pivot in what Blizzard is working on, and that everyone is busy working on new or renewed projects. We're getting Warcraft Reforged patches for the first time in years and Starcraft II is getting patched again, this indicates to me that things that matter to customers are getting worked on. I bet Overwatch Single Player just isn't ready to show yet, the Diablo team is clearly super busy reworking the most core system to the game AND making a big expansion due in just 3 quarters, WoW is busy wrapping up a big expansion... I think the people there are just super busy doing cool things that aren't quite ready for the limelight.

In dark souls all stats improve your char one way or another one (if I remember well). If you add the fact you can't test weapon if you don't have the prerequisites... badly designed stat system. I would not mind a rare costly reset, if all stats make your char better independant of the weapon used ( dmg scaling be a 'secondary effect').

I think it It would work out better if you did it every couple years when you got a really big announcement of a game coming out later that year or early the next year so you can just tease it and bring out all this hype like 6 to 9 months early and show what you guys are working on for the next couple years. Because like you said it ties up so many people and then set you back probably a few months I don't imagine cuz of all the planning and things you got to take away all those important people from. So I think one of these conventions every couple years is probably better than every single year. Like Sony or Microsoft or Nintendo them doing a thing every year or an online thing every year makes a little more sense because their platforming so many games. But the individual companies I kind of don't find a point in it.

Everyone knows all the major diablo-likes and they don't try to hide their origins like PoE etc. Technically a lot of JRPG's these days are more aRPG than classic RPG but they still lie more on the side of the spectrum of RPG than not.

I really like No Rest for the Wicked and the dev response to the players is AMAZING. After 20 hours in the game I HIGHLY recommend the game. However, they really have to stop with the belief that their game has anything to do with Diablo style ARPGs (DARPGS I will call them). It absolutely is an ARPG, but it's about 90% souls like and 10% DARPG at best. Not one classic DARPG will change core gameplay as a result of yet another souls like coming out even if it has random loot. In fact, this game isn't even the first to try this recently. Achilles did something very similar (just a heck of a lot less polished).
Most DARPG players like skill trees, character classes, fast play and wild build diversity. NRFTW has none of that. The only "build" you are doing is Str/Dex/Magic and any special item attributes that support any of these three souls like styles. I am not saying there is anything wrong with that at all, but I think we need to lay to rest the concept that this is in any way the future of DARPGs or that DARPGs NEED a huge change. I think that PoE2 will potentially be more in line with what people will be expecting and want.

There are *five* exhibit halls in total, bringing the grand cost of the halls alone to a whopping 182,000$ to be able to to show the "powerpoint presentations" to everyone. and that's JUST the exhibit hall costs, we're not even getting into things like general staffing costs, vendor costs, equipment and maintentance costs, the list gets LONG.
tl;dr, conventions are EXPENSIVE. and they are often very difficult to break even which is why admission tends to be on the pricer side of things. And even with such expensive tickets blizzcon ends up being a net loss to host that is only made up for by sales of the things they advertise there.

@@powerfulshammy yeah i was thinking that it wouldnt make sense for microsoft to market blizzard games if all that does is reduce xbox revenue

Missed dev work. Not only are you paying the devs, but they are not actively creating content for games that are much more profitable.
Also it's a pretty expensive area to keep a convention in. Venue alone is quite expensive.

As a longtime gamer, I can remember when Blizzcon was basically a celebration of gaming. I was never able to attend but I always wished I could. Being surrounded by other gamers having a good time…that’s what Blizzard was all about. That Blizzard is long gone, sadly. We won’t see it again. If the joy is gone, why have the gathering?

It's true, you live & die by your reputation. Blizzard CA$HED OUT their reputation and it's bearing the ugly fruit. It's taken years but we've already passed the point of no return. Those fast and quick microtransaction got you good money, but your traded in your reputation for it. It's all downhill from there.

All NRftW does is put back in a bunch of mechanics and systems that RPGs used to have a decade or two ago (e.g. stamina, weight, durability, parry, block, etc.) but dropped in the transition to ARPG to speed things off...and, yes, not piss off the casual players at every step of the way. If NRftW wants to limit its audience to "serious players only", so be it. That's their choice. Elden Ring does the same thing, of course, so there is clearly a demographic of players who want this level of granularity to their game playing. But casual players should avoid anything tagged as "Dark Souls-like", of course. They will feel that the juice isn't worth the squeeze.

I'm calling it right now that BlizzCon was cancelled because they couldn't justify it to Microsoft. I wouldn't be surprised if some new larger event for all of Microsoft's gaming properties (which are kind of a lot at this point) were the new conference for things that would have been a blizzcon. I realize they didn't do that to Minecraft, but still.

Been playing "No Rest" recently, really enjoying it. Makes me want to play more soulslike games. It's strange to see it categorized alongside Diablo, it feels more like a soulslike to me. I like soulslike games, but if I didn't play Diablo/PoE, I might not have found out about this game.

It's because of the isometric camera.
But truly the devs keep calling it a arpg and want to change the arpgs genre
      through innovation
