This is very helpful - thank you! I have been searching high and low for a video tutorial showing how to adjust my Tektro Lyra mechanical disc brakes. I did not realise that one of the pads (the stationary caliper) is adjusted using the 5mm Allen (Hex) key.
Cheers You have saved me a lot of money where I was going to take my bike into the bike shop to get my disk brakes sorted out your video is spot-on!! 🚲👍🏼🇬🇧
Nice video. You had some good closeups which really helps. People do adjustments differently, but this was a good overview. Thanks for taking the time to record it and make it available.
This was my exact problem, so the video helped a lot thanks! I replaced pads at the same time, which is easy enough when you know how to adjust them properly.
Abs fantastic Video ! We have watched many between us an none by far are as detaile or explanatory as yours is. Thank you for putting this on abs great Help!
It depends on the situation - if the hub is fine and the fork bracket is fine, it would be easier to change the disc. In this case however, the hub is a bit worn out and after installing a new disc, it will eventually "bend" the disc to the same shape as the first one. Also, so many of the cheaper bikes have crooked fork/frame brackets(just a few degrees is enough) so again, changing a disc every few weeks does not make sense. Hope that answers the question :)
Your brakes actually are not properly adjusted; the brake lever should not come in contact with the handlebar/grip. There should be a space of about 1/2" to an inch between the brake lever and the grip.
thanks for your free school, i'm new and learning so much from your videos. i don't know if you're allowed to do recommendation on bike parts but i'm replacing my disc brake caliper (mechanical) that's not so pricey and durable. it's for a 20" cyclomatic cx4 ebike that i just purchased online (only 2 weeks old and i have to replace it already) by the way i've taken my bike to the bike shop for a quick tune up and they suggested that i should replace my caliper. anyway... i'm open for suggestion. thanks!
You know you could just adjust the brakecaliper for this kind of issuse right? Its really easy... loosen the bolts which hold the caliper to the mount.. then pinch the breaks and it Will center it self again... then its fixed
i'm a novice to bike maintainance. just replaced a cable for the rear mechanical brake on my bike. it now stops like a champ. still got the oil on me fingers as i type. thanks for the tutorial.
I have installed the disk brake on my bike, my problem is that the screws holding the calliper to the mount is very close to the disk. Do you have any idea on how should fix this?
Probably the worst advise going provided that a new rotor (the disk) can cost as little as £5! that way you don’t have to loosen the brake to the point that it won’t stop you in the rain or at decent speed! also instead of undoing the brake wire (which yours needs replacing or a decent pair of wire cutters by btw) you can use the adjustment knob on the calliper. For real bike maintenance please please please look up RJ the bike guy (nothing to do with me) he has advice on how to fix a bike properly!
Not a disc it is the rotor, you can straighten out using a inexpensive rotor truing tool, check on Ebay. This video shows the brakes engaged when the lever is pulled to all the way back to the bar grips. This is a poor set up, brake should engage with a 50% lever movement. You can get a better result by moving the caliper, loosen the two fixing bolts, centralize pads over the rotor re-tighten, with a lightly deformed rotor, you can compensate for that too.
set up and adjusted my daughters brakes thanks to this video, you sir are a legend and I'm now a better dad!

I just got a new bike, brakes weren't assembled and you made my day!! Off we go to beat a world record now!
Good luck, make us proud :)

Very helpful advice, my brakes were rubbing and making an awful sound. Now they run silent with no friction, thank you.

Well done mate
Top video, thanks a lot.
can you adjust the noise on your video recorder zoom?
The rehearsal was accidentally posted, instead of the final version?

just use an adjustable wrench to lever the disc back from where its bent

yes you can rotors are all the same just get the appropriate adapter for you rotor size and bike mounts
Thanks

By the way your rotor is mounted backwards.
I checked it just to be sure and I believe I mirrored the video for some reason, in real life it's on there correctly :)
Why couldn't you just say clockwise and counter clockwise instead of awkwardly using unclear saying s
*your. My bad
That is very poor adjustment, too much slack in the cable, obviously you have no cycle mechanic training
Put the crap mechanical brakes in a bin and buy hydraulic brakes, you wont regret it !
