Thank you for visiting our country and recognizing our growth. You may be unaware so I want to correct you, it is not the "Rwandan Genocide" it is the "Genocide against Tutsi", as Rwandans it is crucial to us that this understood and addressed properly. I encourage you to learn about our history by visiting the Gisozi Genocide Memorial in Kigali, ask the locals the reality of the aftermaths and watch movies/documentaries that were actually directed and produced by Rwandans like Shooting Dogs. I hope you enjoyed your time in our BEAUTIFUL country😇

@@Nouuuu211 My companion and I absolutely loved it! One of the most beautiful countries I’ve been too so far! And thank you for that correction. The media notes the event as the Rwandan Genocide but it is beautiful to hear the correct title from a Rwandan. I definitely want to be as respectful as possible when addressing the horrific event. I’ll definitely look into the movie Shooting Dogs as well! Do you recommend any books about this written by Rwandans ?
I did get a chance to visit two of the memorials which gave me more insight. I do have a question… outside of the museums, are locals open to discussing the history and effects ? I thought that people didn’t discuss it in public ? Please let me know your thoughts!
Thank you again for your comment ❤️

@@MightyIntellectual thank you for being so kind and interested in our country. To answer your questions, the reason why we refute the “Rwandan Genocide” terminology is because it negates the fact that the targets where Tutsis and contrary to most genocides in the world, both the victims and perpetrators were both Rwandans, so to call it the Rwandan Genocide would make no sense (I hope this makes sense😅). Additionally, yes we have so many authors, documentaries and movies about the Genocide against the Tutsi to name a few books: Left to tell by Immaculée Ilibagiza, Inside the Hotel Rwanda by Edouard Kayihura, From red earth by Denise Uwimana and machete season by Jean Hatzfield. Movies alongside shooting dogs are sometimes in April, The 600 (available on youtube) and The day God walked away. Lastly, yes the people are open to discuss their experiences, every April in Rwanda, we commemorate and victims tell their testimonies, as you can imagine it’s been less than 30 years and people’s wounds are still very open and even more so that like I said both Hutus and Tutsis were Rwandans so to restructure the country a lot of forgiveness had to be worked for both people to live together again hence why we don’t refer to anyone as part of a group anymore and only identify as Rwandans. If you talk to some people and they seem reserved, it’s only because of how heavy the history is but otherwise, we are very open to say the reality of what happened especially because the west (especially France and Belgium) has tried so much to deny the Genocide and push their own narrative because of their huge influence in what happened and the fact they did nothing to stop it until the RPA (current day RPF) ended the Genocide. I know this was very long to read but I hope I was able to provide more insight.
