I appreciate the kind comments about the Zelda CD-i remasters. What started as a joke project became a personal effort to make the games somewhat fun, because the original design is, like you mentioned, really not that bad. Still dumb, as you said, and I made sure to keep the games as close to the originals as possible...while also not doing that! A very interesting and challenging project. I'm working a spiritual successor project right now that I hope will continue their legacy...in a good way. Thanks for playing!
ngl the cdi remakes were surprisingly very fun to play, they are also pretty short games so it's easy to replay them and playing them as the King... well, that was fun in its own right. Tho the one thing no one seems to mention are the subtitles, there's some off the wall jokes that got me laughing harder than i thought [chiptuned sound of going off-screen]
Hi, been a while since i watched a video of yours, and by no means am i trying to make fun or offend you, but did you always pronounce your S's like that? I am having a mandela effect breakdown here.

Quick history lesson: Pac Man for the Atari wasn't finished. They released the prototype. The dude who sent it in straight up said "It's not ready, this is what I have so far."
Anyone curious about what a finished version with a decent ROM size would look like, should check out Ms. Pac-Man on the same platform. And if you're curious what the 2600 could really do, there's a homebrew called Pac-Man 8k that shows off just how underused the system was....but in fairness, it was only designed to play Combat and Pong. Anything else requires racing the electron beam of a CRT television at over 14, 000mph, and exploiting the inability of the console to remember what it's already drawn.... If you can mentally track all the sprites, one scanline at a time? You can make a 2600 game.
So that makes it twice then where Atari released an unfinished version as the actual game? First with 2600 Pac-Man, then Fight for Life (if I remember right the version Atari released was an unfinished early build)
@@alex_-yz9to Atari later on straight up gave no shits because they already knew they lost. Fight for Life, the final Atari Jaguar game released, is intentionally in the state that it is because its developer was pissed Atari did not pay him, so he gave them an unfinished prototype and kept the finished product as ransom, and Atari didn't even care and released what he gave them as the final product, so they had _something_ to put on the shelves.
I hear that Sonic Boom wasn't even meant for the Wii U, that Sega decided to be limped dicked cowards regarding that three game deal they made with Nintendo _(which included Colors and Lost World)._ And instead of actually making a damn third game for Nintendo like they promised, they pussed out and took an already in development game that was meant for PS4 hardware and forced it into the game it became. Certainly explains a lot....
The developers weren't told what console they were releasing it on, and hoped for a multiplatform release. However, when they were told it was a Wii U game, it created a HUGE issue, as the engine they were using (Cry Engine) was NOT compatible with the Wii U at all!.
colors wasnt apart of the 3 game deal, it was made as an exclusive due to sonics main target demographic likely owning a wii (various other sonic games on the wii before, sonic in brawl, etc). the 3-game deal was specifically for the wii u, and included lost world, rise of lyric, and mario and sonic at the rio 2016 olympic games.
@@dialga236 And? That still leaves Rise of Lyric as the outlyer for not actually being designed for the Wii U initially. Sega ultimately pussed out on the deal by only delivering two games actually made for the Nintendo console.
@@TeryJones Im not disagreeing I was just giving a small correction, thats all. BigRedButton was working with way better hardware in mind, and the Cry Engine, which Rise of Lyric uses, is not optimized for the Wii U, at all.
Which doesn't make sense with his intro and why he chose the games, Ride to hell retribution should have been on this list regardless if it's already been down to death as it's been apart of bad game lists before His reasons for shadow being a bad game literarily didn't make any sense and takes a second of thought to debunk if you've played the game (also his points more apply to sa1 and 2 and heroes the "sacred cows" of sonic games)
Opinions differ greatly with Shadow the Hedgehog. I, personally, have had those problems described with the poor design, level structure, and the maybe glitchy or downright broken objectives. I completely agree with its placement here. I just think that Ride to Hell should have been added.
I was a bit skeptical about this video since most of these games have been pretty much done to death, but you actually had some fresh points on these and didn't just repeat what everyone else has said. Nice job.
@@TheShadowReviewer Ah yes. Subjectivity. The worst thing to have in an opinion video. My dude, you are fighting a war for an old video game. It doesn't need your defense. It exists, and you enjoy it so enjoy it. Others don't. Oh well. No one needs to agree with you for your feelings to be valid nor do people disagreeing with you make their lack of enjoyment invalid.
But hey, at least Sonic Boom introduced me to such people like Travis Willingham being esteemed voice actors, and even Knuckles being the lovable buff idiot is pretty fun, although it deviates pretty far from his canonical personality of "the angry, gullible one".
I got Big Rigs over the road racing at a Value Village for a few dollars and it deserves every bit of criticism thrown at it, its almost too broken to consider a game like these lol
oh yeah, i haven't played it but i know some of the history behind it and it's almost as interesting as balan or action 52 basically, an indie company went to a shady publisher and asked if they could make a racing game, and the publisher said they'd fund the game, however a few months in development the publishers basically went "we don't care what state the game's in, release it now" leading to them basically releasing a tech demo then the publisher had them release another game that was basically the bike and car sections that weren't in big rigs, as well as fixing some of the most major bugs like the infinate reversing, being able to just drive out of the map and the complete lack of collision, but the game was still very broken and bare bones
Damn. And here we are in modern times complaining about games being disappointing yet there were also games in the past that were straight-up fucking awful...
@@ninjabluefyre3815 Yeah, I didn't know Scott was a time traveling game journalist from 3002! That's great. I loved everyone's brief appearances in the video(if I can be serious for a second), because I genuinely enjoy all of their videos, and Peebs is my favorite youtuber, but Scott The Woz, Time Traveling Game's Journalist From 200003, is one of my favorites, and I'm glad both Caddicarus and SomecallmeJohnny are still doing alright, because I thought we wouldn't see them again until like, next year, or near the end of the year, or something, but it's nice to see them in something like this, because the last time I saw this many people I'm a huge fan of in one video(that also had Caddy), was Caddicarus's review for a certain game where tons of people tried to stop him from reviewing the game, from Shane from Rerez, to Johnny, and a whole bunch of other people. Also, most of these people were on the Nitro Andre Show.
From what I’ve seen, one legit positive I will give to the CDI Zelda games is that Zelda’s VA is actually pretty good. It’s just the script that sucks! Zelda herself sounds fairly strong and mature!
Good vid though I wanna correct you about something regarding Miyamoto: while it's true he had influence over the decisions made in Sticker Star, the mandates he placed weren't as severe as the final game would make you think, and that the team just took his word to heart, and they've done nothing to improve that issue since then. Also Yuji Naka, while definitely not entirely to blame regarding Balan's quality, still has a lot of that grandfathering issues that have plagued his work. Like you can't tell me the one button problem was placed there because Square executives thought it was good like c'mon.
I think the one button thing was there because it worked for Sonic once upon a time, but as games grew more and more complex you really can't ride that strategy anymore. Plus, if Naka did this (and I want to say it was Naka and not a Square mandate) to make the game as accessible to as many people as possible, including the youngest of audiences.... methinks he doesn't have confidence in his audience to understand using more than one button for multiple actions. Freaking Super Mario Bros worked fine on two buttons, Kirby worked fine on two buttons. Maybe Naka should've played a few Kirby games before trying to apply his multi-power idea into the game.
I wouldn't be surprised if Naka was the center of some issue during development. You don't get so many staff members recommending your removal with becoming a severe enough liability that you removal is preferable to the public backlash. Again Naka has a history of not being a team player as both Sonic Extreme and Geist Force show. Few people who have worked with Naka have had nice things to say about him.
The one button idea worked for Sonic because Sonic could do literally one thing, jump, and the entire game was based around that. In Balan, only one button was used, but what that did depended on what suit you were wearing and (in a platformer) that action was often not jump. I think Sonic proves that, if the costume idea had been scrapped, the "one button" was mapped exclusively to jump, and the game's platforming action was focused on interesting platforming challenges, it could have worked. Balan should have been the main character, he had plenty of style. In short, if your game uses only one button, that button must be mapped to a single action, and that action should either be jump or shoot.
Bad Nintendo Fan obsessed with JRPG: NO, YOU’RE WRONG! Miyamoto is to blame for everything! He’s indoctrinating everyone at Nintendo with his bullshit philosophy! He’s destroying all the good video games! How am I suppose to get horny if the story isn’t like Final Fantasy 7? I hate him!!! AND NOW, I’M GONNA DESTROY HIM AND EVERYTHING HE’S EVER LOVED!!! You know, my mom always said: Never bite the hand that feeds you. So I think you petty assholes should stop blaming Miyamoto because one day, you’ll regret disrespecting him. Mario never should’ve been in an RPG
Finally! Someone actually gives star fox zero a good shake and mentions that you can turn the motion controls mostly off. Every time someone mentions it, people just go off on it for the motion controls and it makes me so mad because you can literally turn them off! I can't count the number of times I've read a variation of "Star fox zero might be pretty good if I could just turn off motion controls" and I die inside every time.
@Grima the Fell Dragon The gimmick didn't ruin it. Peoples refusal to simply look in the frickin' options before shouting their bad reviews from the rooftops about not being able to turn motion controls off did.
@Grima the Fell Dragon so? The complaints weren't "My first impressions were of motion controls and I didn't like them therefore the game is bad." They were "You CAN'T turn them off" which is just a lie from people too stupid to actually check. If you can't be bothered to actually fact check yourself, than that's your fault, not the games.
@Grima the Fell Dragon The game does not have to hint or suggest that you can change the controls! Theres a settings menu. That's what it's there for! If you are a reviewer and complain about a game having bad controls but failed to even check if you could change them, thats YOUR problem. The game doesn't have to make a pop up for every feature and setting that someone could complain about just so that you know you can change it. Games don't have to tell you that you can rebind keys or change the resolution. It's your job as the player to actually check if what your complaining about is even actually even a problem at all.
@Grima the Fell Dragon wtf are you talking about? "I just looked up the game and you can't turn off motion controls" is literally a lie. You literally can! You can literally change one setting, and no one did and then bashed the game for it. You have done nothing but repeat the same bullshit blaming the game for not telling you you can turn it off. Stop blaming the game for you being too stupid to check.
Doesn't change the fact that the motion controls are trash and it's the control style that was advertised prior to the game's release. And really, it's just yet another, basic, generic Star Fox game that is borderline yet another remake of Star Fox 64. So even if you can play it without motion controls it's still just a worse Star Fox 64.
It's still one of my favorite Sonic games. Despite how fucking insane and absurd the game is, there's an incredible amount of charm and passion put into it, and that goes a long way for me. I still believe it has some of the best gameplay animations in the series too, there's a lot of squash and stretch which I love.
I was expecting Ride to Hell: Retribution or Big Rigs, and definitely wasn't expecting Star Fox Zero. Great video, btw. I'm sure it was painful to play all this garbage.
@@EssexAggiegrad2011if Zero was in there, then Paper Mario Sticker Star should’ve been covered here too. At least Sticker Star isn’t buggy and unplayable plus it’s family friendly.
On a side topic, I wonder how much influence Tanabe has on Intelligent Systems or any projects he works on? Because clearly, he doesn’t seem to understand what it means to have good game design. But as long as his projects print money (and don’t have an “understandable” catalyst such as a game he worked on being a part of a franchise Nintendo never cared about like Chibi Robo or in the case of Paper Mario: Color Splash, being released on a failed console), Nintendo will keep him as producer on projects like Paper Mario.
Ok, I am by NO means defending Bubsy 3D. That game deserves all of the hatred it gets. However, the developers never could expect Crash Bandicoot 1 and Mario 64 to release around the same time as it. The developers actually hated the franchise from when he was first conceptualized. They were likely banking on doing something completely original and never before seen, all the while, hoping people would go nuts until future 3D platformers would release and improve on literally everything. Fuck that game.
You are mostly correcty the story goes that the Accolade developers were showing off their game to E3/CED, and were 'jackshift" when they say the demostration of Mario 64. So they already knew that Bubsy 3d was going to look bad in comparsion, but not just awful as it turn out to be. It really sad, because the most 2d deaigners of tue game, made a entire 3d engine out of sratch, and spend a fair number if a better "version" of a bubsy game.
>The developers actually hated the franchise Given the atrocity they released, I'll believe it. "Crash and Mario 64 came out around the same time" is a joke-shop excuse; Bubsy 3D was clearly an intentional act of sabotage that made Action 52 look tighter than two coats of paint.
The developers could have had a better time of it if they didn't inexplicably use the "high resolution" PS1 mode for Bubsy 3D. If you've ever seen footage of it and wondered why it looks oddly "crisp" all things considered, this is why. Apparently they thought they could make a unique selling point out of "one of the highest resolution games on PS1!". That resolution was never really intended for the kind of use cases that Busby 3D is, and the decision radically limited the amount of memory they had available and surely added a ton of headaches that weren't necessary, and not just for the visuals either.
@@adamgr6988 I never realized how sharp the game looked before, but now I can't remember a time I saw the game at a low resolution. I don't think I even remember seeing any instance of the patented Ps1 texture warp in the game either. But to be fair, the game is so ugly with using solid colors for giant textures that it's impossible to tell. Still, that's weird and uncanny.
Your channel is like a Platinum Games game. It’s absolutely incredible and everyone who experiences it agrees but it’s doesn’t receive the attention it deserves. This is maybe your best video yet, here’s hoping it does well on the algorithm.
"but it doesn't receive the attention it deserves" I think NiER: Automata got all the fucking attention it could HANDLE, my guy. Yeah, one could debate whether that's a Square game, a Platinum Games game, or a Yoko Taro game, but Platinum IS on the box, so I'm counting it.

Now you see, what you did wrong in Zelda's Adventure was using the Jade Ring to fight Llort (the first boss). The ring does almost zero damage to him. Yes, the same ring you get in the same dungeon Llort is in from a talking mimic. You literally have to hit him like 50 tines with the default wand to kill him. The rest of the game is very much like this.
It's wild to think that most of the bad retro games became known to the internet public via James Rolfe's Angry Video Game Nerd series, it's even wilder to know that James only posted the first few videos as a joke (and as a partial dare given by Mike Matei) and who knew that thsoe videos would blow up and enable him to become a youtube giant in the video gaming community on youtube :)
This video showed up in my sub feed and recommendations already. The algorithm might of blessed you Gilly. Seriously though the amount of effort put into this video, the research, the time and suffering in these games, then there's the collabs and cameos,- thee whole thing is a treat so far and the nostalgia is real seeing people talking about these games again, bit this time actually seeing these memed on games played is a treat, and your honesty while not overreacting is appreciated. This is going to be the video that dethrones the PETA videos from the top, calling it now. It sure deserves it!
This year I started streaming (and finishing) what I called "ugly games" and played Sonic Boom, Mighty No. 9, Star Fox Zero and the Zelda CDi remasters and I loved them for the reasons you mention in this video. I'm happy to see that you gave these games a chance because indeed, some of them hide fun experiences in the layer of reputation and rushed development agendas.
This is the first video of yours I've watched, and I wanna say, great job! I was somewhat upset to see that you omitted Ride to Hell: Retribution. I definitely think that that game deserved to be in this video. But hey, maybe you forgot about it, maybe you just decided that there was no way in hell you would even give that game the time of day. I definitely would not blame you for that lol. It is clear that this video took astronomical amounts of dedication. Kudos to you, sir, you have absolutely deserved a subscription from me!
sorry that this whole process gave ya such a headache Gill, but it was really nice to be able to have a large amount of content from ya to watch, always like your vids, I'd say you're more underrated than you ought to be
Huh, never knew the CD-i games got remade, that actually sounds like a really cool project to check into. Props on the huge project, I know tackling bigger stuff like this is intimidating!
Core-A Gaming did a video on Shaq-fu Your guessing game isn't too far off. It was made by the same guys that made Prince of Persia. It's why it has the motion capture animations which is actually pleasant to look at. But the lack of a buffering system is the problem. If you don't know what that means, you have to wait until the animation is finished for an input to go through. This is why motion inputs are basically imposible.
I can't find any reference that the Shag Fu guys had anything to do with Prince of Persia, as that was made by Jordan Mechner, who rotoscoped his brother for the animations. However Shag Fu was made by Delphine Software Interactive, who made Out of This World and Flashback that are similiar to PoP gameplay wise.
53:55 I'm pretty sure the stage you're thinking of is The Doom. It's the fourth stage of the semi-dark path, and if so, the reason you couldn't find all of the enemies is because not all of them spawned due to a glitch. No, I'm not kidding, this is a real issue that is apparently very likely to happen, and to fix it, you have to use the checkpoints to warp to a different part of the stage and back, which makes the game spawn the missing enemy in.
@@gameman250 That's also possible, but I feel like The Doom is more likely to be the stage because it's very likely that you literally can't find the last enemies without warping between areas to make them spawn. Both are very likely, however.
Only on the ps2 port- Xbox and GameCube don't have this, the game gives you more than the 60 needed to complete the stage it's actually pretty short only around 5 minutes for me as it's a straight line just occasionally going up floors Same with lost impact, a 7 minute stage that is a straight line only requiring to go up floors and into one off set room It's a space station after all the level design is pretty good and there's maps to not get lost, it's a nice touch
i really enjoyed shadow the hedgehog for its branching paths as a kid, they were often unique and fun challenges for most stages, not just "kill x enemies"
It was first 3D sonic game I played and it's not like I had much more experience with 2Ds either so I didn't have expectations for it. And tbh, I didn't think it was bad game. Even back then with my way less critical mind I realized it had some kind of identity crisis between the "gotta go fast" gameplay and more combat oriented action adventure exploration and lack of commitment to either made both worse but overall at no point I thought I was playing a bad game.
This was so so so well made. As someone who edits his own videos, I can't even imagine how long this took you to make! It clearly all payed off because this was a great video! But I am legally obligated to be a cliche commenter and ignore your amazing work by saying you need to start work on the best games of all time video
Random tangent since Wisdom Tree was shown in the video: I heard a story about them once that I don't know if it's true or not. But Wisdom Tree was formerly known as Color Dreams, making plain ol' unlicensed NES games. Apparently to cover their asses against legal action from Nintendo they changed their name and rebranded themselves as a Christian-based video game company, logic being that the big N wouldn't dare pick a fight with a Christian group, there'd be scandals!
It's all very true. But to their credit, Spiritual Warfare is a pretty decent Zelda clone if you go in with lowered expectations. And Super Noah's Ark is just straight up good for a 16-bit FPS, since it's a Wolfenstein clone. Id was pissed at Nintendo's censorship, and the rest is history.
The kicker is that Wisdom Tree is still around. Now, I don't know if they have plans to rerelease their Color Dreams stock, but last I heard, they plan on doing that with their NES games. Maybe they'll be touched up to make them less janky?
It’s always interesting when you actually check out a title with a bad reputation. Sometimes you can actually find something you’d might enjoy. Don’t get me wrong you can also save yourself time by listening to the warnings! I think the main thing here is, if you really want to understand what makes a good game, you need to try out the spectrum I held once, and attempted to play, Action-52 … when you collect you come across these things. You hold this thing in your hands that spawned many nightmares of the curious reviewers. I even remember a late night infomercial selling this thing. It was about 25 minutes and I always wondered why they never showed game play. Well years later and several epic reviewers take I had this legend in my hand. I played it and actually made attempt to play each game, as the trial mandates … and it’s not worth even the asking price. Not then, not now! Look I understand some titles are expensive because people will pay for it so they can have that complete collection … but this is not worth it. It sucks even compared to other bootleg multi carts. And no the limitations didn’t matter because the Genesis version wasn’t much better But I think I ranted enough. Great video man! Didn’t expect such a long one, but was awesome to see. Maybe play something good? You need a palette cleanser lol
I don't comment on videos super often, but man, this has to be your best video. I was engaged from start to finish, and it was just a fun watch overall.
I definitely learned a lot from this vid. Didn't even know there was a remake to the CD-I Zelda games. They don't look...all that bad. I suppose one of the big things with Shaq-Fu though is that people keep saying it's the worst fighting game (or the worst game) ever. It's hot garbage, but I could name at least 3 fighting games just on the genesis that are worse, and I could name LOADS more on the SNES that are trash. Keep up the good work on these videos, man.
Dude I used to LOVE bubsy 3D. definitely liked it as a child though. Something about the super weird and crazy colorful levels really gave me the feeling of a fun world to run around in. I also loved how the characters motion was animated and how quirky they were. I definitely spent a lot of time on that game. All that said, I clearly remember having no idea how to beat the levels really and also didn’t know there was boss fights.
I knew a video this long would have at least one crossover, but I’m not joking, all of them were fantastic in both timing and choices. I’m so happy all of you are friends!!!
I literally burned my copy of Superman 64. My words to it before it went into the bonfire were, "you're firewood," and I just tossed it in, packaging, cartridge, and manual together. And you know what? I still don't feel the least bit bad about it to this day.
This was a really fun watch. It's kind of damning just how many Sonic games are in here, but good on you for saying "You know what? Instead of taking the Internet's collective echo chamber as gospel, I'm going to play these games and make up my own mind on them." I honestly wish more people did exactly that, rather than just parroting the general consensus.
I like the idea of tackling done to death singular topics in a long form video like this. It's made hearing about Bubsy 3d, Superman 64 and Action 52 again feel fresh somehow.
It's a good thing that the X series didn't go out on X5, because good lord would that have been a terrible note to go out on. It's abysmally bad; inexplicable level design, horrible look design, you can just use the best armor in the game from the start, and then of course there's Alia. In short, a total clusterf*** of a game. As we all know, it only went downhill from there. I want the X series to return to glory, I really do, but it will take a miracle.
I played shadow as a kid and never finished it and I recently went back and completed it and it’s not that bad of a game, not that good of a game it does make some questionable decisions, but overall I had a pretty fun time. I like the movement and I didn’t have any issues with the gun mechanic, just a few level missions here and there (like that DAMN Lost Impact)
Lost impact is around a 7 minute stage, the doom is around 5 and all but like one mission can be done gunless and it's still plays the exact same a 3d sonic game only better I've played shadow a lot and it's an objectively good game that improved upon broken mechanics from heroes sa1/2 in so many ways
LOONIE TUNES B-BALL was a fantastic representation of basketball in the 90’s on the Super Nintendo! If I still had all my Super Nintendo stuff, I would still be playing that game today!
Just wanted to take a moment to swing by and say I can tell how much effort you put into this journey and I definitely appreciated the efforts. Good job, dude!
Silver the Hedgehog as a character is great and I love him. I'd say he's one of the only good things to come out of the game, ignoring that boss fight.
Yuji Naka CLAIMED he was rushed. However, everyone who's worked with him both on Balan and in past games have painted him as a complete diva and jerk. The fact that he blamed everyone under the sun for Balan's issues comes off as "When everyone has the same issue with you, you might be the person with the problem".
People claiming that Balan would've been miraclously saved if Naka hadn't been fired are either delusionally fanboy shielding Naka or don't know anything about game design. The bulk of the bad ideas in Balan were Naka's ideas in the first place and even if he hadn't been fired 6 months is nowhere near enough to fix a game that's terrible down to its initial concept. If anything Naka was fired for a reason.
As someone that loves researching and learning about awful video games, this video was really well made, man. You genuinely did your research and explained the games correctly because you actually played them, unlike most other channels that seemingly just read an article or two and quote it verbatim without understanding just HOW bad they are or how they work. It's exactly the kind of way I'd want the information presented to me and you did a fantastic job. Your hard work really, really shows and I look forward to seeing more of your stuff!!
So funny story about Sonic Boom. I have a friend who was at Pax West, which had Sonic Boom demo kiosks. So naturally, he tried the game out. And because it was Sonic Boom, the game bugged out...and crashed. After the machine crashed, the director of Sonic Boom came over to him and started to accuse him of tampering with the booth. The whole thing started an argument so bad that the Director of the game threatened to sue him over this alleged "sabotage"! Nothing actually came from this, but the whole thing is so fucking petty that it loops back to being hysterical. It also reflects the quality of the game if the director was willing to blame his failures on someone else like that.
I had the misfortune to actually own Superman 64 back in 2000. Hell, I beat the game... eventually. The game is... not good. And the only reason I beat it was... I refused to let the game win.
This is a great format, I like this a lot. Wouldn’t mind seeing more vids like this from you in the future, albeit, I’m not asking for 1hr+ videos lol I can imagine the work behind these is extensive. But good stuff! 🙂👍🏼
Considering Atari Pac-man. You're emulating. The ghosts would not be "Seizure inducing" if you played it on CRT. The effect blends in with the background, and would have made them transparent. The NES and SNES did the same effect to make water transparent.
I have beaten Mighty No. 9 multiple times, including the hardest difficulty, and while I can agree that it can be fun, I'd call it plainly lame. Most of the game's best ideas are done half as well as they could be, aside from dashing, I like that.
A couple years ago I saw footage of the lawsuit of Night Trap and I remember Nintendo lawyer Howard Lincoln saying this: “Night Trap will never appear on a Nintendo Console.” Then the 25th Anniversary was announced that came out on Switch and I was laughing my ass off at how poorly this quote aged, it’s incredible.
Finally! Someone agrees with me that Star Fox Zero is actually a pretty good game. Felt like I was the only one in the world that thought that. Is it as good as Star Fox 64? No, or course not. But the game is absolutely beautiful, the shooting is satisfying, and the controls are not as bad as everyone makes them out to be, they just need time to all click before it becomes great. Also, if you want a Mighty No. 9 game that’s actually pretty good, check out Mighty Gunvolt Burst made by Inti Creates, the guys who made Mega Man 9 and 10.
From what little I've played so far, I'm gonna have to agree with both y'all. The dual screen "swap" actually didn't take too much time for me to adjust to, perhaps because I've had some practice on some other Wii U games where that kind of feature was optional.
@@Chaos89P Personally, I never actually used the swapping feature and I never really found the duel screens intrusive. I always saw it a driving a car: just a quick glance down and keeping your eyes on your driving the rest of the time.
@@slashtheporcupine6746 What I meant was I would change my focus from the TV to the Gamepad and back as I felt the situation called for it. Sorry if you thought I meant hitting the - button.
Oh wow I'm pissed off I didn't know how easy it was to disable Star Fox Zero's motion controls. Everyone made it seem like it was mandatory and locked-in, and I'm not a big fan of motion controls. I love Star Fox and now I really hope they re-release it on the Switch.
X7 actually was made worse for the western release, they doubled the health of every enemy in the game. Japanese version is a significantly better experience for that reason alone, though its still not a good game.
@@ALloydRH After having already played the English version about 5 times, I played through the Japanese version and instantly noticed how much faster enemies would die. Especially when I was using Axl's Copy Shot. I found a comparison someone made on twitter, but since its auto-deleting my comment for the link, I'll just try posting the videos themselves. v=2WCy7e9UuZQ v=JLdkjR8Iua8 Also found something interesting in the comments, someone mentioned that apparently you can play the UK version for Japanese damage values and English voice acting.
If anyone's curious on a crossover spin-off, try Mighty Gunvolt Burst. It's got a lot of customization options, where instead of getting special weapons, you make kits specialized to your playstyle and tackle the stages. It's honestly pretty neat.
A fresh, calm fair perspective on these is just so refreshing. I actually had a lot of fun with Mighty No. 9 and like it a good bit, it also has some fantastic character designs. I also think Shadow the Hedgehog is pretty unfairly maligned. Like, it isn't great or anything, but it's an okay enough Sonic game if you beat all the Adventures and Heroes and want some more. I think the premise is what alienates people more than anything
The issue I have with the shadow segment is that nothing was said "it's kinda sorta fun" like okay what do you mean? As that seems to be the main point throughout it Nothing objective was said the whole thing was subjective takes that made no sense when actually deconstructed No music, stage design, cut scenes, level gimmicks, bosses and so on weren't talked about, it was an empty attempt to throw it into the video because it's seen as "the worst sonic game" (even though there's 06, free riders, the boom games, forces, the storybook games, sonic spinball, sonic unleashed for PS2/ Wii, sonic R, knuckles and the chaotix, sonic episode 4 and so on- and all of these have objective reasons as to why they are bad, where as shadow has to be all subjective reasons)
Great video. I think one of the biggest problems with mighty number 9 was how badly it ran when it first released, i know for alot of people the game crashed constantly, paired with the game only being decent at best made it so most people wouldn't want to give it a second chance.
Soooo happy to see a new video man! I’ve missed your stuff for the last couple months. But I’m still always happy to go back and watch a ton of your re-runs. I really loved your video about the more unknown first person shooters with the vibe of DOOM and whatnot! Would love to see another video like that, if there’s enough games to like that to make another video lol Long story short so happy to see a new video!
I was surprised to find out I've basically seen all of these before, save for maybe a couple of the Ninjabread Man clones. To be fair to Shadow, from what I've seen from let's plays there are a good number of hero and dark objectives that don't require killing every enemy, in fact it is possible to get the true ending by avoiding most of them. However this creates another issue where some of the better levels can only be accessed via these kill everything missions, meaning you'll likely be replaying the first 4 stages of the neutral path an awful lot just to take the path of least resistance to complete all the endings.
More a question for other people in the comments, are the performance issues with Mighty No 9 present on PC or is PS5 the only way to play it? Fantastic work on this video, and its refreshing to see that there is merit in some of these awful games
As far as I know (played 5 levels IIRC), the PS3 version is stable. It's 30 fps, but it's stable. I think that the PC version runs fine on modern and more powerful hardware, but why would you want to play that game when both Legacy Collections and Megaman 11 exist?
PC is very much the de facto version to play (it goes for very cheap every other day, right now even!), even if you have trouble running it you can downscale the graphics to the max, performance is critical for this type of game and the visuals aren't that great even on high Regardless of that, the ice stage however suffers from a one big massive stutter midway through (around the area with slippery floors since it's trying to have real-time reflections) and then it just continues to run normally
Hey Gil! I saw this video come up on my recommendations shortly after you released it and binged your back catalog and decided to give this one another watch now that I'm all caught up. You're a great video essayist and I've enjoyed all your offerings, even the non-game related ones. Keep it up! You've more than earned your subscribers.
Ahh, Night Trap. Remember this: Nintendo: "We would never let a game like this be on nintendo console!" Nintendo now: *has even less censorship than the ps4 and has the ANNIVERSARY VERSION OF NIGHT TRAP ON SWITCH*
I can't believe the little bitches in Congress who thought the Night Trap was violent. Truth is they never played or even looked at the games. Nothing has changed either.
Shadow the Hedgehog isn’t remotely close to being one of the worst games ever made. It’s a genuinely good game that continues to be trashed by brainless RUclipsrs who perpetuate this asinine idea that it sucks. It’s the most polished game in the Adventure series. Only complaints are that the camera can get stingy in places and the Eggman Slot Machine boss is kind of annoying.
100% agree, it's an objectively good solid game, which cannot be said about sa1/2 or heroes His review was just another person saying mindless subjective things, he said nothing of substance as to why it's bad and what bafflles me more is people are okay with that, they think he said something smart and praise him for a good review
@@TheShadowReviewer I think SA1 is great, don’t get me wrong. But it’s still not as polished as Shadow. Shadow has the best acceleration, feels the closest to a 3D Sonic game, balances the spin dashing, gives you an additional attack to quickly dispatch enemies and keep the flow going, controls well, maps different actions to separate buttons, easy to pick up and play, you don’t jolt off of edges, the homing attack never fails (unless you spam mindlessly), Shadow stops himself from flying off edges if you run into one, you can stop on a dime if need be and quickly regain momentum, combat is very satisfying and feels great, ranking system isn’t ludicrous or unbearable like in SA2, you’re given positive feedback for multiple types of play, replay value is nearly infinite, tons of secrets, extras, modes and rewards. Sega bent over backwards to address literally every complaint, fixed all of them, only to get bombarded with nonsensical criticism. And these drones continue to push that because “lol edgy Hedghog, so funny, I can puppet yet another video and get attention”. Utterly ridiculous. Sonic fans deserve the drought of games that came later.
@@alexandermckay9521 this, this right here is somehow who has actually played the game and understands it, you even addressed the spamming of homing attacks which yes got changed into a proper mechanic in shadow where timing and control are necessary And things like the rings as up until shadow every game was loose all rings when hit, shadow changed it to loose 10 and it's been that way since (to my knowledge) and they even got rid of that dumbass key system from heroes and added shortcuts for finding them Each character has unique lines of dialogue for actions, idle and hints so much was put into this game; sonic even addresses the fact he'll never be caught with or using a gun referencing the real world and how so many people wanted sonic to have a gun... yet "he uses a gun so therefore bad" or "it's all rock and heavy metal music" and " it's not fun" so the whole game is bad (and no, no it's not all rock and heavy metal as there's; techno in mad matrix and digital circuit, remixed tracks like space gadget or super shadow and of course of the best track in the game circus park which is the only game to my knowledge that has circus rock and it's done incredibly well) I've watched so many reviews for shadow and the one thing that always sticks out is that they use "fun" to mean they didn't like it or just sucked and blamed the game as they do treat it like past games I've played shadow ringless and gunless and it still plays exactly like a sonic game but so much better because of all the refinements to the past mechanics, chaos control and blast are just amazing to use at proper times and each ending is unique with each having their own name, while not necessary to get all endings it tells shadows past in different ways that the player wants. Yes there's a last story but that's not new for sonic and I love last story because it's confirmed that shadow is a test tube baby
@@TheShadowReviewer Oh yeah!! Forgot to mention the rings system too. There’s just so much good to say about this game. Seeing all of these negative reviews really makes me feel like I’m insane sometimes or the Sonic fandom is just blind to good game design. Glad to see someone who agrees with me. I love this game so much. By the way, I am not someone who’s “blinded by nostalgia”. Didn’t grow up playing any of the 3D Sonic games. Just picked them all up for my GameCube this year and played through them all. By the time I got to Shadow I was worried I would be tired of them but it was the first game in a long time to give me that feeling of eagerness to play it again. I’d be at work thinking about it non stop, desperate to get home and go through another path or just replay one of my favorite levels like Lethal Highway. It’s a crying shame that Sega was bullied into forgetting this game. If it got a remaster with achievements on Steam or something it’s probably the only thing I would play haha.
@@alexandermckay9521 agreed it's for some reason just rare to find someone who likes shadow even though I'd say it's one of the best 3d sonic games, it doesn't add any 2d segments either like a lot of new games do I still play on the same Xbox disc from when it first came out and only recently got it for ps2 and GameCube to see the difference (don't play the PS2 one, it's an incredibly bad port and for me the fun came from seeing how broken it is) Playing heroes after playing shadow actually hurts because of how broken and unforgiving it is especially when it's not even the players fault I find it funny how to some degree Sega has listened to the sonic fans, they get what they deserve as now they make the most bare bones games as trying something new is bad and not worth it as X Y Z is what a sonic game "should be" and shadow is left to always have no memory and metal is just left to always race sonic, it's sad what games have become because of reviewers
"Because the controls are bad, the game is bad." YES. This is exactly true. If a game doesn't control well, then it's NOT GOOD. If you want to talk about the ability to alter the control schemes, that's a separate issue. But just because there's a good game hidden under unusable controls, doesn't mean we should overlook the fact.

This is why i think atari was one of the worst Gaming company, this is just STRAIGHT UP HYUBRIS
@@juststatedtheobvious9633 There are homebrew versions of Super Mario Bros for 2600, an improved version of Donkey Kong, among other projects.
@@alex_-yz9to Atari later on straight up gave no shits because they already knew they lost. Bonjour
I'm just glad we got Colors out of that deal. Makes the whole thing worth it!
colors wasnt apart of the 3 game deal, it was made as an exclusive due to sonics main target demographic likely owning a wii (various other sonic games on the wii before, sonic in brawl, etc). the 3-game deal was specifically for the wii u, and included lost world, rise of lyric, and mario and sonic at the rio 2016 olympic games.

I got Big Rigs over the road racing at a Value Village for a few dollars and it deserves every bit of criticism thrown at it, its almost too broken to consider a game like these lol
oh yeah, i haven't played it but i know some of the history behind it and it's almost as interesting as balan or action 52
basically, an indie company went to a shady publisher and asked if they could make a racing game, and the publisher said they'd fund the game, however a few months in development the publishers basically went "we don't care what state the game's in, release it now" leading to them basically releasing a tech demo
then the publisher had them release another game that was basically the bike and car sections that weren't in big rigs, as well as fixing some of the most major bugs like the infinate reversing, being able to just drive out of the map and the complete lack of collision, but the game was still very broken and bare bones

*licks lips* oooh.. The sarcasm tastes like wine.

I agree.
I was expecting Ride to Hell: Retribution or Big Rigs, and definitely wasn't expecting Star Fox Zero.
Great video, btw. I'm sure it was painful to play all this garbage.
Star Fox Zero should not be here
@@EssexAggiegrad2011 That spot should have been given to Ride To Hell. That to me is a huge snub.
@@EssexAggiegrad2011if Zero was in there, then Paper Mario Sticker Star should’ve been covered here too. At least Sticker Star isn’t buggy and unplayable plus it’s family friendly.
You took most reviewers entire career and put it all in one video. Impressive job.
Almost, cause he missed a few games like Ride to Hell
1:20:30 Miyamoto didn’t work sticker star he just gave his thoughts on early builds while Tanabe took them to the extreme
@@MrTherandomguy42 he's produced games like dk freeze and luigi mansion 3 he definitely just sucks at doing paper mario games LMAO

All Bubsy games suck.
>The developers actually hated the franchise
Given the atrocity they released, I'll believe it.
"but it doesn't receive the attention it deserves"
I think NiER: Automata got all the fucking attention it could HANDLE, my guy.

Using that TMNT ad when referring to Ultra Games as a “shell company”…
I SWEAR IF THAT WASN’T INTENTIONAL
I was glad he didn't put that TMNT game on the list. A lot of people think it's a bad game thanks to AVGN. It's a flawed game but it isn't bad.
Core-A Gaming did a video on Shaq-fu
Your guessing game isn't too far off.
Either that or Lost Impact. Same setting, same basic hunt down the things you need to destroy in a confusing maze of a level.
@@gameman250 That's also possible, but I feel like The Doom is more likely to be the stage because it's very likely that you literally can't find the last enemies without warping between areas to make them spawn. Both are very likely, however.
Only on the ps2 port- Xbox and GameCube don't have this, the game gives you more than the 60 needed to complete the stage it's actually pretty short only around 5 minutes for me as it's a straight line just occasionally going up floors
Same with lost impact, a 7 minute stage that is a straight line only requiring to go up floors and into one off set room
It's a space station after all the level design is pretty good and there's maps to not get lost, it's a nice touch
i really enjoyed shadow the hedgehog for its branching paths as a kid, they were often unique and fun challenges for most stages, not just "kill x enemies"

This was some very good and concise work with a lot of character, insights, and fun. Chapeau!
The Jekyll and Hyde actually seems like an interesting concept, and has a pleasing art style.
Much love to you Gilly and very excited to get to dig into an entire hour and a half video
I think the main thing here is, if you really want to understand what makes a good game, you need to try out the spectrum
I held once, and attempted to play, Action-52 … when you collect you come across these things. And no the limitations didn’t matter because the Genesis version wasn’t much better
But I think I ranted enough. Great video man! Didn’t expect such a long one, but was awesome to see. Maybe play something good? You need a palette cleanser lol
I don't comment on videos super often, but man, this has to be your best video. I was engaged from start to finish, and it was just a fun watch overall.
Good job!
Can't wait for the sequel where you cover Big Rigs and Ride to Hell!
From beginning to end this was perfect. Cheers Gill. Thanks for suffering through those for us.
I literally burned my copy of Superman 64. My words to it before it went into the bonfire were, "you're firewood," and I just tossed it in, packaging, cartridge, and manual together. And you know what? I still don't feel the least bit bad about it to this day.
I love the description of “a Bukkake of enemies” lol that got me right in the chuckles lol
At least action 52 gave us the epic cheetahmen theme song, which has managed to outlive everything else in this abomination
“Sonic 06 being the worst Sonic game ever made”
Sonic 1 port for GBA: “Forgetting something?” *evil laughter*
I played shadow as a kid and never finished it and I recently went back and completed it and it’s not that bad of a game, not that good of a game it does make some questionable decisions, but overall I had a pretty fun time. I like the movement and I didn’t have any issues with the gun mechanic, just a few level missions here and there (like that DAMN Lost Impact)
Lost impact is around a 7 minute stage, the doom is around 5 and all but like one mission can be done gunless and it's still plays the exact same a 3d sonic game only better
I've played shadow a lot and it's an objectively good game that improved upon broken mechanics from heroes sa1/2 in so many ways
you can not just fit 15 years of AVGN's life in 95 minutes video
Excellent job, Gilly. This video really brought me back to the kinds of videos I'd see as a teenager, in the best way possible.
“Oh because the controls are bad the game is bad”
That’s a very valid reason to hate a game
Silver the Hedgehog as a character is great and I love him. I'd say he's one of the only good things to come out of the game, ignoring that boss fight.
So true! Most people hate him because of that notorious boss fight... well, and simply because he's from Sonic 06, but he's a cool character.
Shadow the Hedgehog is unironically one of my favorite Sonic games of all time.
Not in my top 5, but definitely top 10.
Your hard work really, really shows and I look forward to seeing more of your stuff!!
hard to believe the wii couldnt handle sonic '06 considering Twilight Princess is on the system.
Damn that actually sucks
One of your best videos, I'll honestly rewatch it and recommend it to friends. Grrrrrrrrrrrreat work!
yeah.
I used to own Shaq Fu and I really liked it. I’m from the uk a country where no one watches basketball so I had no idea Shaq was a real person
damn if only this video came out one year later, Gollum would of been on here
and Redfall
Considering Atari Pac-man. You're emulating. The ghosts would not be "Seizure inducing" if you played it on CRT. The effect blends in with the background, and would have made them transparent.
The NES and SNES did the same effect to make water transparent.
I have beaten Mighty No. 9 multiple times, including the hardest difficulty, and while I can agree that it can be fun, I'd call it plainly lame. Most of the game's best ideas are done half as well as they could be, aside from dashing, I like that.
A couple years ago I saw footage of the lawsuit of Night Trap and I remember Nintendo lawyer Howard Lincoln saying this: “Night Trap will never appear on a Nintendo Console.”
Then the 25th Anniversary was announced that came out on Switch and I was laughing my ass off at how poorly this quote aged, it’s incredible.
Source? I couldn't find this information myself.
@@ALloydRH After having already played the English version about 5 times, I played through the Japanese version and instantly noticed how much faster enemies would die. Especially when I was using Axl's Copy Shot.

Also found something interesting in the comments, someone mentioned that apparently you can play the UK version for Japanese damage values and English voice acting.
As that seems to be the main point throughout it
Nothing objective was said the whole thing was subjective takes that made no sense when actually deconstructed
No music, stage design, cut scenes, level gimmicks, bosses and so on weren't talked about, it was an empty attempt to throw it into the video because it's seen as "the worst sonic game" (even though there's 06, free riders, the boom games, forces, the storybook games, sonic spinball, sonic unleashed for PS2/ Wii, sonic R, knuckles and the chaotix, sonic episode 4 and so on- and all of these have objective reasons as to why they are bad, where as shadow has to be all subjective reasons)
"A Journey Through the WORST Games Of All Time"
-Sonic: "Hold my beer"...
Would love to see another video like that, if there’s enough games to like that to make another video lol
Long story short so happy to see a new video!
Luckily, we Europeans never experienced the videogame crash!
I really wanna try those CDI remakes. Great video Gilly! 💙
I'd love to see more long videos from you! I know you don't do em often but it's really nice to just listen to your voice!
PC is very much the de facto version to play (it goes for very cheap every other day, right now even!), even if you have trouble running it you can downscale the graphics to the max, performance is critical for this type of game and the visuals aren't that great even on high
Regardless of that, the ice stage however suffers from a one big massive stutter midway through (around the area with slippery floors since it's trying to have real-time reflections) and then it just continues to run normally
Remember this:
Nintendo: "We would never let a game like this be on nintendo console!"
Nintendo now: *has even less censorship than the ps4 and has the ANNIVERSARY VERSION OF NIGHT TRAP ON SWITCH*
I can't believe the little bitches in Congress who thought the Night Trap was violent. Truth is they never played or even looked at the games. Nothing has changed either.
6mos later, and there's a small team of modders who are bringing the original DNF back from the dead with the blessings of the original dev team.
Were you like an anime fan on prom night when you played Mighty Number 9?
Do you Remember what the developers said? Having Mighty No. 9 is better than having nothing 😒
Theory: Action 52 was going to be action 100 but they either ran out of Money, Time or Cartridge Space. Or All Three.
Not me clicking on this video and looking for AntDude because of the thumbnail xD
It surprises me that Mortal Kombat Mythologies is considered one of the worst games of all time when Special Forces exists...
100% agree, it's an objectively good solid game, which cannot be said about sa1/2 or heroes
His review was just another person saying mindless subjective things, he said nothing of substance as to why it's bad and what bafflles me more is people are okay with that, they think he said something smart and praise him for a good review
@@TheShadowReviewer
I think SA1 is great, don’t get me wrong.
@@alexandermckay9521 this, this right here is somehow who has actually played the game and understands it, you even addressed the spamming of homing attacks which yes got changed into a proper mechanic in shadow where timing and control are necessary
And things like the rings as up until shadow every game was loose all rings when hit, shadow changed it to loose 10 and it's been that way since (to my knowledge) and they even got rid of that dumbass key system from heroes and added shortcuts for finding them
Each character has unique lines of dialogue for actions, idle and hints so much was put into this game; sonic even addresses the fact he'll never be caught with or using a gun referencing the real world and how so many people wanted sonic to have a gun... yet "he uses a gun so therefore bad" or "it's all rock and heavy metal music" and " it's not fun" so the whole game is bad (and no, no it's not all rock and heavy metal as there's; techno in mad matrix and digital circuit, remixed tracks like space gadget or super shadow and of course of the best track in the game circus park which is the only game to my knowledge that has circus rock and it's done incredibly well)
I've watched so many reviews for shadow and the one thing that always sticks out is that they use "fun" to mean they didn't like it or just sucked and blamed the game as they do treat it like past games
I've played shadow ringless and gunless and it still plays exactly like a sonic game but so much better because of all the refinements to the past mechanics, chaos control and blast are just amazing to use at proper times and each ending is unique with each having their own name, while not necessary to get all endings it tells shadows past in different ways that the player wants. Yes there's a last story but that's not new for sonic and I love last story because it's confirmed that shadow is a test tube baby

Oh yeah!!
@@alexandermckay9521 agreed it's for some reason just rare to find someone who likes shadow even though I'd say it's one of the best 3d sonic games, it doesn't add any 2d segments either like a lot of new games do
I still play on the same Xbox disc from when it first came out and only recently got it for ps2 and GameCube to see the difference (don't play the PS2 one, it's an incredibly bad port and for me the fun came from seeing how broken it is)
Playing heroes after playing shadow actually hurts because of how broken and unforgiving it is especially when it's not even the players fault
I find it funny how to some degree Sega has listened to the sonic fans, they get what they deserve as now they make the most bare bones games as trying something new is bad and not worth it as X Y Z is what a sonic game "should be" and shadow is left to always have no memory and metal is just left to always race sonic, it's sad what games have become because of reviewers
This is the first video I've watched by you. It's very good and well thought out. I admit, I subscribed due to your friends' cameo, whom I'm also subscribed to. That being said, you're covering old, dusty ground in a different way, and I appreciate it. Very well done, Sir.
Oh, you have more friends on here. Ha. I love it.
Should've made Johnny wear his Sonic Boom outfit if he hadn't gotten sick. Either way, great video.
