  • Hey everyone! here's the next episode of Three-For-All with 3 Michael Lee Firkins Licks From 1996. I featured Michael a few years ago on the LNL channel and since that time I've had a lot of requests to feature more of his inventive and fiery playing, and he's currently touring Europe alongside Chad Wackerman and Stu Hamm on the Freeway Jam Jeff Beck Tribute concert tour, so I felt it was a great time to dive into more of his impressive and finger-twisting licks - so let's dive in!
This lesson features a handful of ideas pulled from a live performance in 1996, which captures Michael strutting his stuff with a full band, and his playing was flawless and inspiring throughout the concert.
The ideas shared here include a signature hybrid-picked melodic phrase from his song 'Cactus Cruz,' a bar-dipped slide emulation phrase, a wicked sequenced pivot shred idea, a terrifying slip-n-slide sequenced run, and much more!
Needless to say, if you're a fan of Michael Lee Firkins timeless music and guitar playing, a player searching for some new licks to add to their bag of tricks, or maybe you're just curious what all the fuss is about - this lesson is totally for you! I first heard Michael Lee Firkins Laughing stacks on a floppy 45 rpm record. It blew my mind how different it sounded to other guitarists. Legend!

Firkins is just an all around awesome player with a very unique sound. There is a live video on him on YT (Yamaha Guitars 1991) which is kickass playing from start to finish... some tasty sweep licks around the 21 min mark. Rain in the Tunnel still one of my favourite songs with an epic outro.

Nice vid. Firkins was THE guy that was willing to avoid the shred trend and establish himself as a unique player.

years ago in the 2000s, not longer after i started playing, i noticed one day the sargasso sea was in amongst my music files. no idea how it got there, and it took me forever to find out who the artist was because it only had that title and there was very little info about firkins on the web at the time. i can't explain how much that album blew me away. to this day it's still a top 10 guitar album for me.

Thanks again! Greatest channel on RUclips. I've loved Firkins since he came out. Caught him at a clinic at Reliable Music in Charlotte back in the day. I don't remember the amp but he only used one of those yellow boss overdrive pedals, and his sound was exactly like the record, all in his fingers. ❤

Thanks for putting this lesson together David. I wore out that 1st MLF cassette tape lol! When I saw Jeff Pilson was playing bass on that album, I knew it was going to be awesome. "Space Crickets", "Rain In The Tunnel", and "Deja Blues" are absolutely killer tracks. The phrasing, the mixture of styles, the speed and then softness of his playing are so unique. I also had never heard anyone play with a whammy bar consistently like that (as I was not familiar with Jeff Beck back in the day, I was only about 80's metal/hard rock). Nevertheless outstanding player, who never got nearly as much credit and recognition as he deserved.

Oh, yes, Blues Saraceno's Plaid album was really really great that time, really listened to it a lot! And Firkins "Deja Blues", also such a great song!

Great lesson!! Michael is a monster player and totally changed my understanding of “shred” guitar when his debut album came out. Hearing Michael changed the way I play for ever!

Been a MLF fan since the beginning, I just can't play his stuff because of how he uses his fingers. As soon as I saw the name I was like, oh man, give us that opening sequence to Rain in the Tunnel, which is really melodic and bendy. I used to make all my students learn it because it's a great practice/bending exercise that sounds fabulous too! Maybe do it on video 2 of MLF!

Dave, great lesson as usual. Could you do a lesson on the solo from Guitar Shop by Jeff Beck?
That is one of my favorite solos of all time. Every time I hear it I have to rewind and listen to it 3 or 4 times. Like did that just happen? Just sick!
