Should be noted that fort Henry location was picked because at the time the south was respecting kentuckys neutrality. Unfortunately latter a Confederate general [Polk or the other who's name starts with a P] grabed the bluffs at columbus kentucky. Then grant took Paducah and kentucky was forced into the war. A much better location to build henery and Donaldson was down river in what today is called the land between the lake's only three miles apart and both on high ground. After columbus that had claimed it would be the Gibraltar of the west was abandoned, the area of island number 10 was also hindered by earlier restrictions of siting battery's because of kentucky neutrality.
