Hundreds of videos and a couple books on knots n such. 4 months later and $3,000 in gear by going low n slow I’m now topping 100+ foot poplars in the woods near my home. Slow,safe and quality gear. Wish I started when I was 21 not 51 however I freaking love it. Just got a tree hammock n sleeping bag to do overnights in the canopy..

    hi Reg..... you are a great teacher .... thank you..... im 69,,, been a timber faller and high climber for 30 years now..... for quick escapes on trees or branches or big suckers, etc.that could peal off, break, collapse, etc. with us connected to it with a normal steel core swivel snap,,, that we could never undo in time if the tree etc. failed...... my invention idea that works are the 3 5/8 inch wichard quick release swivel snaps ,, made in france, very expensive,,, but we are talking about our lives depending on escaping in time..... i used to make a separate lanyard for them until my brain kicked in a bit,,,, and now when i need them,, i just connect them directly to my swivel main snap on my normal 3/4 " steel core 18 ft. lanyards..... !!!!!! works fantastic,,, like hoodeenee....lol......you need 2 lanyards set up like that though to go around branches on the dangerous tree.......also.... something i never see or taught on utube is something i was taught many years ago,, and i practice it religiously....!!!!!!! always take off your climb line from your body and rap it around the tree real quick before cutting big tops or chunks...... because if that shit raps around your climb line on the way down you are f#%*@#......!!!!!!!..... thank you for sharing your knowledge ....... roy guy.......mendo.,, ca........ u.s.a.

    Great content, as always. I like how you warn of potential hazards as you went. Things to be mindful of.
    I wonder if you’d consider doing a video where you discuss some of your close calls or worst-case-scenarios of what you’re doing as you work.
    I always stop to think before I start the saw, “how badly could this go wrong?” And try to consider potential dangers of the action I’m about to take, and I make adjustments as needed.
    I think a video that points out things that can go wrong would be helpful for considering scenarios that many of us perhaps haven’t thought of.

    Reg, some years back I had one like that break out below me and pinned me to the falling spar. I had to cut my lanyard to free the spar b4 it crushed my hips from the strain. I learned to clip both snaps of the lanyard into the same d-ring when doing sketchy snags for this reason. I know you mentioned the breakaway lanyard to cover this but I just thought I'd add this to your excellent video in case someone could use it.

    • @Recoates
      @Recoates  4 года назад +2

      Glad you survived John, thanks for adding the warning. The downside, or risk of tying to the same D is, as opposed to a breakaway link is the the stem breaks a long way down and is heavy enough to rip the top of your tie in tree down and you with it. Sketchy stuff which ever way you go.

    • @johndurant8687
      @johndurant8687 4 года назад +1

      @@Recoates Yes, I remember watching you clip into the non life support D-ring for this very purpose. I think you should design a saddle with a break away D that is designed to fail at a specific load. I'll preorder 3 !

    • @nate2838
      @nate2838 4 года назад +1

      @@Recoates Do you have suggestions for where to find a breakaway link? I haven't been able to find anything with a rating of 50lbs (imo enough for work positioning, yet likely low enough to not overload a tie in) so i've settle for a panic snap rated to 600 pounds that can be released under load with less than a pound of pull. I put this on my bridge, then connect both sides of the lanyard to it so if the worst happens i can drop the whole lanyard system with one quick pull, no chance anything from that lanyard gets snagged on what i'm trying to get away from.

    • @Recoates
      @Recoates  4 года назад +3

      @@nate2838 i think youd have to concoct something of your own, and pull test it till you are happy. Might be something simple like a couple heavy duty key ring,

    6:42 😃👍 Tank you. Now I don't have to be ripped in two by a broken tree or top.😅

    May I ask a respectful question about the danger?
    If the tree were to have failed with you lanyarded in..... were you trusting your reflexes and knowledge of your equipment whereby you could unclip one side of your lanyard with one immediate, smooth, instantaneous motion? .... thus freeing you from the falling tree, allowing you to swing back safely, albeit suddenly, into the anchor tree.

      Yes. Ive practiced lots of time. Like Clint Eastwood in High Plains Drifter. To be fair if it was going to break it would've done so when i was pulling with the grapple. By the time I got my weight stood on it and got the feel I felt a lot happier clipping in thereafter. If it were anyone else Id say use a breakaway link. A case of do as I say, not as I do.

      @@Recoates Thanks, Reg! .... I don't recall in High Plains Drifter but if I watch it again, I'll have to note that. The only (6-gun) practicing that come to mind right now is Outlaw Jose Wales and Unforgiven... but I think the point is well taken! thanks again.

      .... I get it now..... deliberate, focused, prolonged practice until you can do it flawlessly -- on demand -- every time. thanks.

    I like that grapple. Maybe it's been asked, but how much does that grapple run?

    • @Recoates
      @Recoates  4 года назад +1

      I paid about 220 for it some years ago, or maybe less. Rock exotica used to make a good one too, but I haven't seen either available for a while

    I am no tree guy but what is the point of tree topping? I am just wondering. The tree you where on was topped.

    I've notice that you have the t540 and in other vids you use a 200t how is the t540 compare to the 200t do you have any pros or cons about it ?

    • @Recoates
      @Recoates  4 года назад

      Both great saws, both ported. The stihl is a little punchier, as in better throttle response. The Husky has more torque perhaps. The Husky is better on gas

      @jessebogucki9081 4 года назад

      @@Recoates yeah I like the 200t for the throttle response but I've been thinking about getting a new saw for climbing. I like both stihl and husky but just not sure yet on if I should get 201t or 540 and just keep my 200t as a back up cause it has alot of hours on it and I'm the second owner of it but because of epa auto tune saws are slowly taking over and I just bought my first auto tune saw 572. I like it its smooth but if it was ported then it wood be a cutting machine

    When you have two carabiners attached to your bridge you should alternate the gates so the gates done rub together and open. Just a precaution. Stacking things in favor.

    • @andymace5837
      @andymace5837 4 года назад

      It takes a lot of bad luck to rub open a 3 way biner never seen it done but I would think impossible with a 4 way

      @@andymace5837 happened to me on my rope. its double locking and triple action. the triple locking quad action wont but they have problems with a plastic pin and the extra part of the gate breaks off. carabiners open pretty easy with rope or a branch rubbing the right way.
