This was her first big break as an artist. She was clearly nervous and had no formal training. She is amazing now
She doesn't have formal training but she has been joining singing competitions since she was a kid and that developed her vocal technique. She's called The Vocal Supreme here in the Philippines. One of my favorite vocalists. ❤️
Katrina the Queen of sustain. A freak of nature since she is just more or less about 5 foot.
I still want to thank you though for taking the time to check on Katrina even if this is quite a feat for you since she is not one of your preferred vocals. Well, as we all know, a singer isn't born a vocalist, one has to start somewhere rudimentary. This was Katrina's novice attempt to enter the music world officially through this particular bus. To me, who is NOT a singer, I see this as not Katrina's thin line between success and failure. Her vocal flaws are so minuscule for someone who started without the guidance of masters. Have a fine evening now from Texas.
Actually this part you're wrong...since as a kid she has been the breadwinner as a singer. She has done over 1000 singing contest (even went on TV) till one of her videos went viral and she got some national fame. Then she moved to playing clubs and got to X-Factor PH. Joined a group but left & went solo later. Wish Bus she was already well known.
And she did all that sitting at a table??😵💫

Katrina is the best in vocal technique.
She's been joining singing competitions ever since she was a kid, and according to her it helped with her vocal stamina and performing suicidal songs over and over. She doesnt have any formal training as most Filipino singers are self taught here through competitions.
Also you need to check her more to dive deeper into her technique.
She's called The Vocal Supreme here in the Philippines because of her wide array of vocal skills or in her "kit bag" as you call it, that not alot of vocalist here in the Philippines possess.

Love your analyses. You're fair, you consider factors that might affect a singer's delivery. You're right, she's not connecting with her eyes here. This was an early performance, her first, I think, on the Wish Bus. She is now a seasoned singer. Wow, you must must hear her version of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." Stellar performance.

You don't know ? She can sustain in breath
THIS WAS SOMETIME, 8 OR 9 YEARS ago when the international took notice of Katrina. She is only on her 5th scale, you need to know her more and listen to how she handles the edge of the 6th. She has songs that started on the low 4th scale. Sustainability-wise, she has improved 10-fold. Listen to her sing with other young good Filipino singers, how she harmonizes and controls her voice without stealing the scene but complimenting the other singers. She has no formal vocal training and right around this time, it has only been one of her first TV appearances so the tension is apparent, but she has improved her technique over the years and is an unstoppable singing force right now.
Im a filipino. I really love the dr opinion. People who intents to listen and sit down and think over makes a great development. Rather than arguing. You have a good analisis in my opinion. If others think shed really good. I think you see some ideas which others cannot.

Hi, thank you for reacting to our mother monster, thanks for the critical analysis and the knowledge you share to us, this is her first breakout career in music industry she's young and a self-thought singer, she competes a lot in various singing competition in our country even a young as 12 years old she's already a beast. Even now as an adult and a mother, she became more and more monstrous when it comes to singing. This is Katrina's very first performance on Wish Bus many years ago. You may try another song cover of her recently. I recommend 'I Surrender' a duet with another artist. Katrina is a vocal beast. But one of my favorites are Somewhere Over the Rainbow (Patti Labelle version) and her Whitney Houston Medley.

i read that this was one of her first Wishbus performances. she looks nervous.
Well this is a detailed analysis of what I consider one of the imminent female voices of this generation.
As raw a talent as she was back then, this is the performance which convinced me that she is something special.
This was shot not long after her bout with bells palsy, a condition that leaves half of your face numb/lame (notice her top lip still hanging to the one side), which could go a long way to the phrase closures you were referring to. 8n the one belt there was definitely tension, but to be fair she quickly shrugged that off to give her trademark, full sustained belts in the end.
Basically as good as she was then, the singer she was then, the singer she is today is at the peak of her significant powers. An absolute beast of a singer.

Longevity? This woman sustained F5 for 15 seconds, G5 for 12 seconds, and Bb5 for 4 seconds. ALL WITH VIBRATO. Her vocal range is Bb2-C6-A6-B7.
He's crazy and looking for stuff that isn't there. I'm not sure how good he really is as a coach. I've seen many coaches speak on Katrina and his weirdo critiques never came up in their videos.
@@captainKbobkeeshanTRUE. If singing is a fight to the death, Katrina is going to slay everyone in terms of agility, breath support, and STAMINA. She was singing in a bar every night during pre-pandemic almost non-stop (at least 10 songs) and I never heard her crack.

You are not connected because she is on the bus. Its normally played over the radio. Try to provide examples using your voice whenever you suggest changes on the arrangement or the way it should sound.
This was her very first Wish Bus performance. I think she was a little nervous about it. That's just my thought.

@@moniquemontague8645 Plus, he's a vocal coach. hahaha. Yes the limbo rock thing shows ability most can't do. Few months back she was at the beach and people were doing karaoke,,,she was passing by and just sang with them & killed it. For her, there's no need for any artificial sound controls...that's why she's a vocal beast.
While Kat is a belter extraordinaire, I never feel the same emotional connection with her as I do with Mori or Gigi. My favorite part of this performance is the bridge. However, if you do want to hear some exemplary whistle from her, may I suggest "I Wanna Know What Love Is".

He keeps going on about her beauty and her eyes. Her beauty. Her beauty. Her beauty. It's a bit creepy. Yes, she's pretty but it's a little obsessive. In fact, I wonder if it was a dude would he be saying the same thing... E.G., "His eyes. He has such beautiful eyes. But, I need them to be more expressive. He's so beautiful. He's so pretty but I need more." Yeah, I bet that criticique never happened with a man. Shouldn't he be going on about her voice. That's why blind auditions exist because of creeps like this dude.
I don't think he's a "creep". I think he was simply trying to hide or soften his dislike of Katrina's singing by showering her with unrelated compliments. Katrina is hyped to be a vocal goddess, and perhaps Dr. Dan was expecting a lush, booming, sonorous, mature tone like Morissette's, but instead heard a thin, reedy, somewhat childlike sound--a common complaint by Katrina's detractors. To her credit, however, her tone and style have surely evolved over the years, and I hope Dr. Dan gives her another listen.
I think u have made up your made mind even before u saw this video. Ive seen hundreds of singers/vocal coach reacting to this video. Do not compare your fave singers to others.

I'm disappointed by this reaction. she is a "good singer" good?! if she's good then the rest of the populace is utter garbage. no american pop singer could come close to matching this, at this level, and im american. this was a long time ago and she was nervous but the core of her vocal ability shines like a supernova, the power, the runs, the endless breath support, and the one thing about Katrina, you never ever feel like her voice is going to fail her, her voice is as reliable as the sun. ok she didnt look at the camera but she was totally immersed in the performance.
