    Man, a tear-jerking story that builds up to a happy ending, a lot of stunning backgrounds and a few 'thief and the cobbler' style of animation tricks, and a very surprising religious theme. All in all a surprisingly great effort from the studio altogether. It looked like they gave it their all here to produce the best cartoon they could.

    Isn't it nice how our minds comfort us when we are dying ? We create something wonderful and magic for ourselves so we don't have to suffer as much as we would without it. (I once did this for days and nights for years when I lived on the street...I was with the woman I love and her son, and I felt complete for the first time in life...a boy to love and cherish and watch over and tell him everything I know of right and wrong and to forgive people...when to stand and fight, and the things that make life worth living for yourself and others...the things that no one can take from you) I felt taller than any mountain to stand by her side...to care for her as a husband should, and never forget what joy she brings me just being 'there'. What does an imaginary 'God' offer that compares with my dreams ? The promise of suffering and death...the only promise ever kept ? NO...I sometimes wish I were back on the streets where I could find comfort and happiness in my own heart and mind, however irrational and false it may seem to the World 'outside'. I miss what I knew was better than any 'true' reality...the reality I wanted for myself and for them.

By the end, it has the original end title, but on later prints, it says "A Columbia Favorite - The End" like the one in "Bon Bon Parade" and other "Color Rhapsodies" that were reissued.

    A lot of animated versions of this story don't have the nerve to actually show her dying. Like the 1989 Disney version of The Little Mermaid (another Hans Christian Anderson story), the sad ending is usually re-worked into something more "happily ever after".
    I'm impressed with such a bold storytelling decision. And yes, I did tear up from watching this.

    This cartoon proved that other studios were every bit as good as the Disney studio - if not better. What a sensitive retelling of Hans Christian Anderson's poignant story! BTW - Which composer and what work did they use when the little angels appeared? This tune will play through my head for a while.

  • @somix5365

    I can only imagine what this does to a child's mentality. I'm 20 and it still traumatized me with how sad it is. I also can't imagine how people see a helpless child and they don't help it. I would have adopted her, this is unbearable. Beautiful animation and music though.

  • @nycruise
    @nycruise 4 года назад +2

    It was always a story about a little girl dying. The original by Hans Christian Anderson made no sense at all: she is destitute but she gives away all her clothing to help others stay warm. Seriously, who gives away their only dress during a winter storm? I read it once as a kid and thought it was awful. That was decades ago. I suppose it was meant to teach a lesson about being kind-hearted, unselfish and compassionate, but to what end? To the point that you do yourself in??? Anderson's "The Little Mermaid" sort of ran along the same line: "Love someone to the point that you do yourself in" - but that happens all the time, so that story made a lot more sense! LOL! As for the cartoon, I don't think that title card is the original. It has the UPA-style characters that were created during the late 40s. The rest of the cartoon seems to date from 1937, in particular the one female character with the feather in her hat. That style was soooooo 1937 (Betty Boop sported a hat like that was in one of her cartoons).

    I have mixed feelings about this film. On one hand, it's a pretty depressing story, even with all the amazing scenes in Heaven. Before this adorable little moppet gets to go there, she's all alone, cold and hungry, ignored and even teased by all the happy people around her, and then she ends up dying alone and forgotten in the snow. I imagine that during this time, in a lot of major cities during the depression, there were orphaned and abandoned kids who were having to fend for themselves on the mean streets IRL, and I hope that this cartoon certainly made more well-off people aware of that fact. However, the animated scenes about Heaven WERE pretty impressive, and it's obvious that a lot of thought was put into them!

    • @Inflec
      @Inflec 4 года назад +3

      +JoMarieM - The message of this cartoon is still very relevant today. This story played out in real life in my area last winter. The only difference was a homeless old man instead of a little girl. He froze to death in a bus shelter during the depths of a subzero coldwave and snowstorm. The kicker is that this happened in the most well-to-do community in the region. He didn't die in the middle of nowhere. He had mental issues, yet even with agencies like "Adult Protective Services" he was allowed to freeze to death. Simply abominable in my book.

    • @forrestwilson4394
      @forrestwilson4394 2 года назад +1

      @@Inflec Agreed. It happens more often than people want to admit. They don't bat an eye at a homeless person dying because they can dehumanize them by thinking somehow they deserved it because they are homeless or crazy etc. We still have hundreds of thousands of kids in the US that are in foster care and homeless. Very few will ever be adopted and many of them go on to become those homeless old people we see in the street. The system just "cares" for them until they're 18 because they want them out of sight, ie not on the street begging as children. Society is fucked

      I mean, in the US we have hundreds of thousands of kids homeless and in foster care yet people still make jokes about the homeless. Not to their face or anything, but it's more to show the indifferent uncaring side of society. It's an allegory, not meant to be 100% literal. The people care more about celebrating the holiday than they do the plight of the less fortunate. All of the homeless and destitute in the world regardless of their character as adults were all once innocent children hoping, fantasizing about love and care.

      Angels are real. God is real. You choose Him and Heaven and that's where you'll go. I agree with you both, I'm in no big rush to get there but I want to go to Heaven, too! God never lets me down and I'm sticking with Him to get there someday. =) This animated film is a treasure and as heart-shattering as it is, it's SO good and sweet and honest! It kills me but I love it. I wish more work this honest, moving, and thought-provoking was still being made! I'm working on that at LittleBilly.com.

    This is really sad. But, it is really good as well. Yes, the child passed away, but, went to heaven. I read where it was released during the Great Depression, so it may have been "sad" on purpose. Thing's were pretty bad during the depression. Anyway, thank you for posting this !! (and yes, I too am mid 60's)

    This is the only cartoon which make me cry

    • @Inflec
      @Inflec 4 года назад +1

      +Morita Sari - There two others that I can recall with a similar pathos: the scene in Snow White where the dwarves find her after she eats the poison apple. They approach her apparently dead body taking off their hats in respect. That scene was a tear jerker for many audiences.
      Another cartoon like this was what I think had to have been the first Casper The Friendly Ghost cartoon (can't remember the title). In that one Casper makes friends with a fox who by the end of the cartoon ends up being killed by hunters. In the final scene Casper is grieving over the grave of his lost friend, then the spirit of the fox emerges from the ground and the two have a happy reunion. But this cartoon gets first prize for the depth of feeling it conveys to viewers.

    But imagine if it's was the opposite where a husband and wife in their 30s found the little girl being so cold for like 10 minutes so they bring her to their house quickly for warmth from the harsh Winter breezy soon the girl slowly see their house is so beautiful and gorgeous that she wanted to stay with them, as the wife never had any Children for long time and decided to adopt her as their daughter, I wonder what if that happens?
    Sorry for my rusty American Grammer, I know it's suck.

      People don't care about the less fortunate, regardless of how cute and sweet they are. It's sad but we have hundreds of thousands of kids in the US foster care system, but you don't see ads or info about them in media because no body actually cares. Everyone likes to say oh if only I had the money or time etc etc but it's just excuses not to take on the actual work of loving people who ought to be loved
