I cannot force myself to watch this. I saw this as a child (approx. age 11) and it broke my heart. I'm glad it is here on RUclips. I am 64.
imsixftsix so sad
U r right
Man..that last part when the angel picked her up...WAS SO FREAKING SAD!😭
Sailor Moon Girl Yep! I saw this same thing in the 8mm silent version which was black & white. How sad.
she's dead
Breaks my heart to see this. How sad, but beautiful at the same time.
I saw this when I was a child. It’s always been my favorite. I’ve near seen Les Miserables but I do love the movie La Vie En Rose about Edith Piaf.
Hans Christian Andersen has a knack for that.
This one always makes me cry 😢 the beautiful baby angel 👼 she became. ❤️No more suffering in this cruel world.
Once you saw her imagine a better life with every match she lit and it progressed...you knew how it would end. 😓😥😢😭😭😔
I had that feeling it would end with child dying and sweet death freeing her from pain. 6:06 This moment here got me. Watching innocent wanting to be cherish and love. Deep inside everybody has this lovely feeling that can acknowledge such strong moving scene .we still got compassion inside us
The original story pulls at heartstrings more because when the third match was lit, the girl didnt dream of a soft bed or a magic land. She dreamed of her grandmother who was the only one who loved her
Nope .that was at the fourth match.
enough to make a grown man cry 😔
Man, a tear-jerking story that builds up to a happy ending, a lot of stunning backgrounds and a few 'thief and the cobbler' style of animation tricks, and a very surprising religious theme. All in all a surprisingly great effort from the studio altogether. It looked like they gave it their all here to produce the best cartoon they could.
toby070 happy ending? The little girl dies of exposure in a snowstorm. Then religion is crammed down our throat with the "heaven" ending. Beautifully colored and animated otherwise
That was then, this is now. I think what they're trying to show us that the story doesn't *have* to be that way.
she died D:
she froze to death T_T
@@ermineletigre Well, considering that now the little girl is dead, the angel can take her to heaven where all the beautiful visions of heaven will become a reality. So, to me, this ending is bittersweet.
Heaven in this cartoon is simply gorgeous to look at. I wonder who is the artist who painted these backgrounds.
+sampea CAML - Almost certainly it was more than one person. It rivals Disney's best productions.
I'm weeping on the inside for this poor child.
Gillian Day Couldn’t agrée more.
@@milkandhoney981 yep
It brought me into tears 🥺🥺Soooo emotional !!
Guillermo del Toro said this story partly inspired Pan's Labyrinth. They're both about a girl using her imagination to escape from reality and dying in the end.
I have never EVER seen a cartoon with an unhappy ending. Dang!
At least Match Girl is in Paradise at the end.😢
5:17 made me want to cry. Something as simple as a doll made her so incredibly happy. Watch how often and how hard she hugs that doll over the next almost-minute.
Shame there is no mention of her grandma like in Hans's tale. Still, i think this is the best cartoon version of this tale
Yeah I kept waiting for the Grandma too
@@PhoenixHealing Perhaps her grandma died stupidly young and was the angel that carried her away?
@@maryfreebed9886 I think you're right, her grandma was the angel.
1:34 - To quote the great folk singer Ralph McTell: _In our winter city, the rain cries little pity / For one more forgotten hero, in a world that doesn't care._
Isn't it nice how our minds comfort us when we are dying ? We create something wonderful and magic for ourselves so we don't have to suffer as much as we would without it. (I once did this for days and nights for years when I lived on the street...I was with the woman I love and her son, and I felt complete for the first time in life...a boy to love and cherish and watch over and tell him everything I know of right and wrong and to forgive people...when to stand and fight, and the things that make life worth living for yourself and others...the things that no one can take from you) I felt taller than any mountain to stand by her side...to care for her as a husband should, and never forget what joy she brings me just being 'there'. What does an imaginary 'God' offer that compares with my dreams ? The promise of suffering and death...the only promise ever kept ? NO...I sometimes wish I were back on the streets where I could find comfort and happiness in my own heart and mind, however irrational and false it may seem to the World 'outside'. I miss what I knew was better than any 'true' reality...the reality I wanted for myself and for them.
Gerry Nightingale, Reginald Frazier. Take care of yourselves and your loved ones. Merry Christmas from Detroit, Michigan.
What the hell is wrong with you!
Like wtf😭😭😭this broke my heart so..............badly
I'll never watch it again
It literally made me cry
Why couldn't she found a mommy
7.18 this moment then the girl died i cried - so sad for the little girl who had a better place after this life.....i cried for this moment for the girl.....so sad......
I got this cartoon on 8mm and I saw it for the first time and it was silent, but the ending makes me want to cry, all I have is to get my Kleenex tissues ready for the sad ending. By the end, it has the original end title, but on later prints, it says "A Columbia Favorite - The End" like the one in "Bon Bon Parade" and other "Color Rhapsodies" that were reissued.
Damn! That's brought tears to the eyes of this 64 year old! 😢
OMG this is so sad! Technicolor cartoons r so beautiful. I wish when I die an angel can carry me home too! ♥️
To Yahweh be the glory ,there is a happy ending for all ,if you just believe in his word and live it. Good cartoon ,very emotional :..)
I'm crying like a baby.
Such a adorable little girl it sad 😭 and make me cry to see her suffer like this.
At least she is in heaven. R.I.P
Thank you for this. I remember seeing this full version a long time ago. It always gets to me.
A lot of animated versions of this story don't have the nerve to actually show her dying. Like the 1989 Disney version of The Little Mermaid (another Hans Christian Anderson story), the sad ending is usually re-worked into something more "happily ever after".
I'm impressed with such a bold storytelling decision. And yes, I did tear up from watching this.
For those wondering the song used at 3:18 is a lyrical version of waltz in a flat by Johannes Brahms
بكل بلد عربي وجدت الملايين من هذه الطفلة 💔حسبنا الله ونعم الوكيل بكل من كان السبب في ذلك 💔😟😢😔
I know it’s a cartoon but every fibre of my being wanted to scoop up that child and put her in a warm bath with a bottle of milk...no child should ever go through something like that, seriously
Also, what sort of adult is like ‘oh look there’s a child with no shoes on in the snow, better blow this party blower in her face and keep walking’
No actual adult would do that
The deathless story of Hans Christian Andersen adapted at the end of the Great Depression. Sad and wonderful.
Prof.Dr.Abbud agreed.
She's not even real, but I wish I could save her and be her Mummy.
Yes she's not real there are children in 3rd world countries in her situation
This was my old 16mm IB Tech print for years before upgrading.
This cartoon proved that other studios were every bit as good as the Disney studio - if not better. What a sensitive retelling of Hans Christian Anderson's poignant story! BTW - Which composer and what work did they use when the little angels appeared? This tune will play through my head for a while.
I can only imagine what this does to a child's mentality. I'm 20 and it still traumatized me with how sad it is. I also can't imagine how people see a helpless child and they don't help it. I would have adopted her, this is unbearable. Beautiful animation and music though.
It was always a story about a little girl dying. The original by Hans Christian Anderson made no sense at all: she is destitute but she gives away all her clothing to help others stay warm. Seriously, who gives away their only dress during a winter storm? I read it once as a kid and thought it was awful. That was decades ago. I suppose it was meant to teach a lesson about being kind-hearted, unselfish and compassionate, but to what end? To the point that you do yourself in??? Anderson's "The Little Mermaid" sort of ran along the same line: "Love someone to the point that you do yourself in" - but that happens all the time, so that story made a lot more sense! LOL! As for the cartoon, I don't think that title card is the original. It has the UPA-style characters that were created during the late 40s. The rest of the cartoon seems to date from 1937, in particular the one female character with the feather in her hat. That style was soooooo 1937 (Betty Boop sported a hat like that was in one of her cartoons).
Poignant and yet even today there are babies, children, thrown away like trash, abused, enslaved. 💔
my god this is traumatising
She looks to be approximately 3 years old.
This is why I never liked Christmas holidays.
At least she is now free of it all and taken to a place just like her dreams.
I have mixed feelings about this film. On one hand, it's a pretty depressing story, even with all the amazing scenes in Heaven. Before this adorable little moppet gets to go there, she's all alone, cold and hungry, ignored and even teased by all the happy people around her, and then she ends up dying alone and forgotten in the snow. I imagine that during this time, in a lot of major cities during the depression, there were orphaned and abandoned kids who were having to fend for themselves on the mean streets IRL, and I hope that this cartoon certainly made more well-off people aware of that fact. However, the animated scenes about Heaven WERE pretty impressive, and it's obvious that a lot of thought was put into them!
+JoMarieM - The message of this cartoon is still very relevant today. This story played out in real life in my area last winter. The only difference was a homeless old man instead of a little girl. He froze to death in a bus shelter during the depths of a subzero coldwave and snowstorm. The kicker is that this happened in the most well-to-do community in the region. He didn't die in the middle of nowhere. He had mental issues, yet even with agencies like "Adult Protective Services" he was allowed to freeze to death. Simply abominable in my book.
@@Inflec Agreed. It happens more often than people want to admit. They don't bat an eye at a homeless person dying because they can dehumanize them by thinking somehow they deserved it because they are homeless or crazy etc. We still have hundreds of thousands of kids in the US that are in foster care and homeless. Very few will ever be adopted and many of them go on to become those homeless old people we see in the street. The system just "cares" for them until they're 18 because they want them out of sight, ie not on the street begging as children. Society is fucked
@@Inflec Eternal rest grant unto that man and may perpetual light shine for him.
Oh God, I just can't
So sad 😥😥😥
Девочка со спичками Г.Х.Андерсен
Those same big headed greedy people are still on this planet, who don't care and they will walk pass someone who needs help, and don't care. This story cartoon as meaning that is so real today.
In Turkey there are poor children who sell band-aids and tissue pocket packets on the streets. I would imagine that something similar plays out fairly often, only instead of freezing to death in the snow, they die of heat stroke instead. Not better, just different.
Oh my god that is the saddest freaking thing I have ever seen
That girl was a angel❤❤..how sad is that??
Que triste !!!
Belo e triste ❤✨💖
Poor kid. :(
So... her false hope of having a happy life actually carried her to heaven?
The lesson: poor and miserable people, stop dreaming; stop living.
What's this thing I feel in my throat? 🙁☹😢😭
That was HELLA sad!
Why she had to die like that?
gsolee Nobody was sympathetic enough to take her in, as it said in the original tale.
Life's a bitch then you die. Doesn't matter if you're only a poor starving child. Everyone is so used to the story of a plucky orphan finding a loving home but reality is not like that. People cling to a fantasy because sometimes that's all there is to live for
2019
Terribly sad.
😭😭😭
Damn, this shit is DARK.
POBRECITA se murió de frioooooo 😭
❤💐
in the span of time people come to the idea of standing up for the poor and week . and in that moment we are the best of all of us and in that vary moment the ones in power and with a greed and malice scream the word " NO! " our government is one built now only on greed and avarice ... countless people and kids die each and every day do to the rich that turn a blind eye to there lives in an indifference on the cusp of verbal assault . know this do not judge a person by there word but by there deeds and works .......
this reminds of mathew 25: 31-46, in the bible. very terrifying to me.

WTF Columbia? Quite a lesson to be teaching the youngins.
+Phrogex1 - This was a theatrical cartoon in its day and was amost certainly aimed at "mature audiences." In any time this would be too strong for young minds.

Por poco menos que ésto a Disney lo criticaron por extrema crueldad ...el dibujo es ruin y apela al golpe bajo
This cartoon was released during the Great Depression, so it struck a chord with many people at the time. Too bad it was later sanitized to get rid of the more depressing parts, because that rips the heart and soul out of the whole thing.
lol this is a hans christian anderson fairy tale, this is the happy watered down version....was around long before the depression....also this was released a lot later than the depression...we're in WWII territory now.
Disney remade this and put it in fantaisa if you want to see it
i think it would strike a chord with modern russian people. 90th were a hard time for us.
More like poorly edited.
I'm 23 years old and this cartoon. Had enough power to make me shed tears. Truly a heartwrenching story.
I just found out. Hans Christian Anderson wrote it and published it in 1845 that way before the 1930's depression that way in his story.
Thank God! Finally a decent copy of this masterpiece.
Wow, visually and emotionally stunning, but, man, I just can't bring myself to "LIKE" this, you know?
This is brutal. I cried.
DuneDemon8 me too. Such a tear-jerker, this cartoon and story truly teaches a lesson.
I find it hard to believe that even in 1937 adults would be laughing at and making fun of a young, helpless and destitute child suffering and dying in the snow.
wordsmith52 just like I found it hard to believe that even in the 70s people said "hell no" and "damn straight "
fargeeks why
Make fun of? No. The opposite. To guilt them.
@True Crime he isn't talking about the short he is talking about the scene in which the adults laugh at the girl
I mean, in the US we have hundreds of thousands of kids homeless and in foster care yet people still make jokes about the homeless. Not to their face or anything, but it's more to show the indifferent uncaring side of society. It's an allegory, not meant to be 100% literal. The people care more about celebrating the holiday than they do the plight of the less fortunate. All of the homeless and destitute in the world regardless of their character as adults were all once innocent children hoping, fantasizing about love and care.
She died but when to heaven💖💖💖💖💖💖😢😢😢😭😢😢😢!!!!!!. So Beauitful I want to go to heaven!!!!!.
Angels are real. God is real. You choose Him and Heaven and that's where you'll go. I agree with you both, I'm in no big rush to get there but I want to go to Heaven, too! God never lets me down and I'm sticking with Him to get there someday. =) This animated film is a treasure and as heart-shattering as it is, it's SO good and sweet and honest! It kills me but I love it. I wish more work this honest, moving, and thought-provoking was still being made! I'm working on that at LittleBilly.com.
if you're good, you shall go to heaven
Be making god happy by worshipping him by soul and heart, and loving/ forgiving all people on earth, good or evil.
This reminds me somewhat of the beautiful cartoon: "I'll See You Somewhere in Dreamland"
I wanna adopt her right now
And the sky was all violet shes dead
@@mshyena9085 i know
so do i. She seemed like an amazing young girl, she deserved better.
We have over 500 thousand kids in the US that are in foster care/homeless. If you have the capacity to love and care for a child in need, you should look into it
@@forrestwilson4394 thats what im gonna do i am a lesbian who wants a child
Its nice to know the last 2 mins were slightly restored.
This is really sad. But, it is really good as well. Yes, the child passed away, but, went to heaven. I read where it was released during the Great Depression, so it may have been "sad" on purpose. Thing's were pretty bad during the depression. Anyway, thank you for posting this !! (and yes, I too am mid 60's)
This is the only cartoon which make me cry
+Morita Sari - There two others that I can recall with a similar pathos: the scene in Snow White where the dwarves find her after she eats the poison apple. They approach her apparently dead body taking off their hats in respect. That scene was a tear jerker for many audiences.
Another cartoon like this was what I think had to have been the first Casper The Friendly Ghost cartoon (can't remember the title). In that one Casper makes friends with a fox who by the end of the cartoon ends up being killed by hunters. In the final scene Casper is grieving over the grave of his lost friend, then the spirit of the fox emerges from the ground and the two have a happy reunion. But this cartoon gets first prize for the depth of feeling it conveys to viewers.
I cry every time I watch
Such a beautiful story....still gets to me every time 😭😭😭
But imagine if it's was the opposite where a husband and wife in their 30s found the little girl being so cold for like 10 minutes so they bring her to their house quickly for warmth from the harsh Winter breezy soon the girl slowly see their house is so beautiful and gorgeous that she wanted to stay with them, as the wife never had any Children for long time and decided to adopt her as their daughter, I wonder what if that happens?
Sorry for my rusty American Grammer, I know it's suck.
+what the heck am I doing here - I understood you just fine. :)
Thank you! What's shown on TV has the guts cut out of it.
+mergendeiler - I just saw this cartoon for the first time on ThrowBack TV and the version It aired is the same as this one. Left me in tears. :_(
This cartoons are so beautiful but really sad sometimes.
Aqui eu um Brasileiro vendo essa linda animação alguém em 2019 ou até em próximos anos quem sabe? 🇧🇷🇧🇷
Omg this is was so sweet and sad at same...
nice video, but didn't find it as sad as the short story - always shed a tear reading it - as the people look at the little girl dead in the snow and not knowing what wonderful things she had seen
andyu69 Couldn’t agree more. As a child, reading this tale taught me to be compassionate for everyone. I also watched this as a child, i cried so much. Watching this again is making me cry way more.
No one knew, or could even imagine, what beautiful things she had seen; and to what a glorious new home she had gone with her grandmother, on that New Year's Eve.
Oh wow this was sad. Didnt expect that :(
With everyone walking they could’ve taken her in.
in times like that no one wanted the burden.
I would’ve done so.
People don't care about the less fortunate, regardless of how cute and sweet they are. It's sad but we have hundreds of thousands of kids in the US foster care system, but you don't see ads or info about them in media because no body actually cares. Everyone likes to say oh if only I had the money or time etc etc but it's just excuses not to take on the actual work of loving people who ought to be loved
I remember cry watched this when I was child
