Over 20 years on CPAP and I've learned more in the last few months watching these videos than I ever knew before. Dr. and sleep therapist won't give out this info. They want you to make another appointment--3 months out--for any adjustment. I use a resmed ASV. For the last year I've had an AHI of 0, and 8.3 hours average sleep time. , but I've been getting lots of bloating, GERD and mask farts and waking up for the last 6 or 8 months. ...... I've lowered my PS max from 20 to 10 (still going down) PS min is at 4. The last 2 night I didn't wake up at all. Bloating and gerd is better but not gone . ----------Why would a fixed pressure be better than having a min and max?
Hi there, because ResMed machines will normally over-deliver therapy pressure by around 30% on the way up and they also go too low on the way down. Glad i was able to help. Cheers
So happy for her , shortly before all of this happened, she was ready to give up on her therapy all together. She was pretty upset about it. I am personally very thankful for sleep HQ community. This is proof that it is worthwhile and I believe eventually we will hear stories of sleep HQ, actually saved a life. Uncle Nico and Adam, you both should be extremely thrilled but yet very humbled at what you have created with this community .. all I can say is hats off you both need to be commended and thank you
So true Brett, I actually think I became quite depressed about it all at one point. New mask and pressure changes turned it all around and it is only through this awesome community that I have got to this point.
I'm going to try this tonight. My aerophagia is getting worse and worse and is becoming a quality of life issue with queasy, bloating feeling, gas and worst of all, a foggy head with poor concentration. It's affecting my work performance and my energy level and mood. If this works it'll be HUGE for me.
Thanks Nicko (nice haircut by the way). I would never have thought that a fixed pressure of 7 would be the way to go, especially when the machine kept jumping up to 10. I remember my max when I first started therapy was 16! I hope this video can help lots of others as I found the aerophagia could be pretty debilitating. You guys have without a doubt been my life savers 😊
Glad you got relief . I use Resmed Air Curve 10 - on Bi Level. I have been suffering with mask leaks, and Aerophagia for some time. I finally got my Medical Provider to allow me to drop the pressure - and it solved my problems. I was on 19 / 13 but noow has been changed to 17/10 and No more leaks, no more Gas/Bloating. I am a happy camper.
Thank you for helping so many of us who are tired and tired of big belly look! I will join you and try going to a lower number to see if that helps. I look forward to your thoughts on my readings. thanks again!😊
Aerophagia (air-eating) is an important topic. So thankful that you have created this platform for today’s newbies to provide life-changing help. I have been on CPAP since 2006. Back then, NO ONE really seemed to understand what it was, save for a few! I have lived in an Ivy league area, with an affiliated hospital - and this was still the case.. If I had not worked in research there, and advocated strongly, I would have likely had to stop treatment. Again, imagine health outcomes for those who really want and need this therapy, but become so discouraged that they must stop! In my case it was very painful, and actually bordered on feeling emergent. Thank goodness someone back then was able to trouble-shoot my aerophagia. My problem was too-high pressures and mouth-breathing. Solved by switching from Bi-PAP to CPAP to Auto-Pap, and fine-tuning to less aggressive settings. Turns out that higher settings than required also induced central apneas which normally did not exist. So, for me at least, several reasons to find answers. Thanks again for creating this platform. You are making a difference.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure this is what happened to me. I was on Resmed AutoSense10, Aerophagia was so bad I was getting severe GERD. Was also getting dizziness from all the air pumped into my sinuses & ear canals.
Hi Guys, I struggling with my CPAP machine, I'm waking up with sore chest most days with a pain in my shoulder blades, I have complex sleep apnea that caused Atrail Fibrillation, since using my CPAP I have been AF free.. so that's amazing!!! Plus I can't sleep the whole night a few hours then I wake and find it had to get back to sleep.. frustrating. Thanks Guys. Sharpie
I've been having horrible gut and stomach issues. I've never used an SD card to collect data before. Whatever the sleep doctor put my settings on my machine is what they have stayed on for years. Now I'm really wanting to take a look at what i can change to get some relief.
I love this example, because with MDs (in my experience), many of them lead themselves by the P95% and would not recommend her to use a fixed CPAP 7cmH2O even when the AHI is very low,(like this case) which tells us we can try a lower pressure and verify how the patient tolerates it. As a patient and an RST its refreshing watching how you handled this case.
Absolutely mate. You should never just leave the automatic to be in full control. It will deliver too much pressure on the way up and also vice versa on the way down. You need to fine tune the pressure range if you're using apap mode but i do recommend you also try CPAP mode and check the results / comfort. Cheers
Interesting. I will have to try setting my machine at a lower mode with both high and low set to the same pressure. I have extremely painful aerophagia. I tried explaining it to my Doctor and sleep lab tech but they offered no real solution. It seems they don't like thinking out of the box.
Mostly likely there is no solution. An ENT would say, let’s have more operations followed up with sleep study. A GI would say get more blood work, endoscopy and imagings to see if you have more underlying disease, or just take some gasx or maybe PPI, or “why don’t you give up CPAP?”. A sleep specialist would say “go away your ahi looks good”
I just started CPAP therapy 4 days ago, thought I would share my experience. I am using an Airsense 10 auto features on and the mask that covers the nose, not the mouth. I started with 86-91 events per hour from sleep study. Night 1- I used the prescribed settings 6-20 on the pressure delivery and a medium nose piece. I felt like I was being waterboarded, but I fought through it. In the morning I felt super bloated. I had 13.5 events per hour Night 2- I bypassed the clinical setting and dropped the pressure delivery to 6-12, thinking this might help with the bloating. I also went to the large nose piece. I had reduced my events from 13.5/hour to only 5.5/hour. But man I was I bloated and nauscious. Day of Night 3 I was so sick I felt like I was being poisoned. I was vomiting, had urgent diarreah, nausea and just felt so sick I decided to bypass another night of this until I talked to my doctor. I am not trading 1 problem for another. I am on Day 4 now. Some bloating has passed and I am still nauseous. I am not doing another day of CPAP until my doctor gives me some answers.
That was extremely helpful. I have my yearly visit to the sleep Dr and I might ask if I could try that. Not because of swallowing air but I am constantly waking up and use to be such a good sleeper. The only thing I can think of is the apap is waking me up.
Hi Loretta, yes you 100% should. The fast, frequent pressure changes are a common cause of sleep disturbance. It's also much harder to achieve a stable mask seal when the pressure is moving up and down. Cheers
I JUST had this happen a couple days ago. So bad, I tore my Nasal Pillow mask off and quit the BiPap for a few days (which is unlike me as I’m married to it). Turns out I had congestion from a summer cold. Another cause is when I have to take Metoprolol Tartrate for AFib, that alone will give one belching. So not sure if it was a combo or what but sent a message into my Sleep Pulmonologist and they said I’m already on the lowest settings for BiPap (8/4).
How on Earth are people sleeping for that long? I am trying everything and I still wake up around the 7 hour mark. I actually want to sleep for 8 hours.
Since I was diagnosed with OSA I have had a small handful of aerophagia. The last time I had aerophagia was last year once and it woke me up out of a sound sleep as I felt like my stomach was a balloon & I went to the bathroom & let out a "guttoral belch" that went for over a minute. Not very comfortable.
Another great great video. After watching lots of videos and studying sleephq, I am still confused - especially with EPR on/off. In this video, it suggest turning off EPR on the AS11 and lowering the pressure. Unless I missed it, what is the guideline for how much to lower the pressure ???
Man o Man - I lost 150lbs on Keto, and I lowered my pressure from 12 to 10, but I noticed a lot of gas lately, and so I lowered it again to 9.5 - no gas now. Whew!! This is crazy.
I just discovered your channel and it has been so helpful. I'm still catching up on your videos and they are very informative. You have probably answered this in other videos but I haven't seen it yet. What Cpap machine do you use and recommend? Thank you for all you do to educate us!!!
Yes, because there's more dead space in a full face mask they are normally easier to breathe with but i recommend you try both full and nasal options. Cheers
Thanks a lot wowwww I tried exactly what you said in the video and it works perfectly woowww now no more leaking that goes to my stomach my pressure it is 6- 9 I fix it to 7 and works great woww I am very surprise and my events for 9 hours is .1 woow thanks a lot
Hi there Nicko!! Will this fix work at higher pressures? My settings are 10-13, with an EPR of 2. I have terrible aerophagia, terrible bloating and pain in the mornings. PLEASE HELP! Best from Guatemala City!!
Great channel mate. Can anyone tell me how can I see a graph like this clip showed of my nightly pressure changes? I have Resmed Air sense 11. Only had it for one month. Sometimes have bad aerophagia.....like today. I want to see what I'm maxing out at. Thanks
G'day mate, it's through my cloud platform www.sleephq.com . Check it out! Free accounts available that give you access to the most recent 30 days of detailed data. Cheers
I lost around 30 pounds and since then I wake up with bloating and I’m extremely gassy ALL night. I think I’m going to reduce mine and see what happens.
I've been going thru this for near a year. I've been rooting about with my pressure levels and if anything it's getting worse. I'm not sleeping solidly averaging sleep for about 2hours then waking. When I check the mc when I get up it's common to give me between 20 to 40 episodes. I guess I'll give this a go as nothing else seems to be working. I recall when I first started therapy about 15minths ago I felt like a new man. Then within 3minths I was having probs with massive bloating and feeling so sick in my stomach I've been missing meals and losing weight.
Uncle Nicko I need to get a Resmed because the DS2 Replacement is a dumpsterfire! I went into replacement focused on the Resmed 11 yet I have found some resmed 10s like half the cost of the 11 so I am honest money being like 500-600 better hard to not consider the 10. Direct Medical is having a huge sale right now. any advice will help thanks Uncle :)
G'day mate! lol From US here and just stumbled on this. For some reason, just in past 4-5 days I've suddenly got something going on and just starting to wonder if it is the CPAP. I've used a CPAP for several years now but have the new dream station one from a few months back. I've been using it awhile now with no issue but in past few days, I've experienced like back pain, side pain, and what feels like bloating, etc. Since it occurs when I go to sleep, that's what got me thinking about the CPAP. Just odd that it came on so quick. Any thoughts on this?
Really getting issues with this in the last few months. Distended stomach and farting like a champion. Watching religiously as we speak. I average a really decent nasal mask sleep. 7hrs plus easy .
Hi there from Ireland. I was diagnosed with sleep apnea just over 2 months ago. I was adjusting well to the CPAP machine but was feeling "windy" in the mornings from the beginning. This steadily got worse. I mentioned it to my Resmed nurse about 2 weeks in, and they went about adjusting pressures remotely on my machine. That's the service Resmed Ireland provide with my machine. Instead of waking at 4 or 5am, I'm waking a couple of hours into sleep with terrible bloating, I look 6 months pregnant and have really bad abdominal pain... between 7 and 9 out of 10. It takes an hour or 2 for the pain to ease, and then I'm just windy the rest of the day as well as tired. MY QUESTION IS will a Bipap setting be better than just a single Cpap pressure? The cpap has helped in that I'm not waking EVERY morning with a headache and nausea, but the aerophasia is an issue such that I don't want to use my cpap machine. I hope you can help so that when I next see my specialist, I have a better understanding of my problem. Kind regards, Simone.
So question, what do you do if your cpap machine is at a 4 ??? and you can't access your machine's option in order to change it from automatic to fix pressure ???? Because I can't do the bloated gut, its giving me digestive problems like never before.
Nick, if you've done a video about patients with COVID-19, could you send me that way? I am recovering, mild case, but have not worn my mask/machine since diagnosis...congest is pretty much cleared. Nevertheless, could you explain pros/cons of COVID and CPAP therapy? Danke Schön! 💯🇦🇺🇺🇲
Just had my first night on my Resmed Airsense 10. I am really interested to see the detailed info/graphs that you see but i have no idea how to access it, all i can get is a really basic pdf summary which just echoes whats on the screen in the morning. Any idea please? Love the channel!!
Hey mate, it's pretty straight forward. You just need to sign up for an account on SleepHQ.com . There's a free membership option that grants you continuous access to your most recent 30 days of data. And then you just upload your SD card files using your computer. Here's a video that shows the process using a PC - ruclips.net/video/KKQ1iat-ni8/видео.html
Can you do this with an ASV machine. When I turned of ramp which is basically the only measure I can tinker with because I'm on managed care. my settings are 10 0 10 but the machine will go up as high as 24 on a bad night. Getting rid of ramp seemed to help me get right into therapy and bring down early on o2 drops. Going bang into a full ten pressure does make me burp etc. I need the high pressures to control central sleep apnea CS breathing and a host of hypopneas and a few OAs.
Thanks for this! Does it work then to reduce my fixed pressure until I start to consistently see higher numbers? A bit stuck between how often AHI numbers are unreliable but then needing to rely on them to find a minimum fixed pressure that isn't too low.
I have a resmed airsense 10, I dont know how to change the pressure. only my equiptment supplier did those changes for me under the order of the doctor. I have an impression that the patient can not change the pressure themselves as the procedure is kept secret from them by the supplier. Is this right ?
Hello - I am a 74 y/o c pap user and used one for 30 years - I use a ResMed AirSense 10 auto set brand machine. It seems to work ok but I have the big belly problem- it’s huge! I may be a bit overweight but I look huge - something is wrong! Help! I have played with my c pap setting and tried bringing it down to 8 but feel like I am drowning- so back up to 10.2 - I use the tape mouth and that helps but still no improvement with my giant stomach. Can you look at my situation? How do I go about that? I don’t have the cloud but I have regular internet- is there hope for you helping me? What can I do. ? Please n Thank You❤️
This is very helpful. I am having such horrible gas and intestinal problems since starting cpap several months ago. Also I have high leakage even tho my 02 sats are excellent and my AHI is below 1.5 always. I wasn't sure what to do. So I am set at 9-12. Sometimes in the morning it is up to 11.5 so I thought I needed it that high. I am going to start by setting a solid 10 and see what happens. I will monitor my 02 sats as well. What do you think?
I might just take it down to 9 because I note air swallowing even then. Also, I haven't been able to wear a full mask because my mouth fills with air so am using an N20.
I have tried everything, having pressure increased, decreased, changed mask, reclined and nothing. My events are low, little to no leaks, so the machine is working it just is getting too much to take the constant bloating and stomach pain. I am going to try the fixed pressure and see if that helps.
Hi Nick, I use a BMC Luna G3 Machine and have done for the last 12 months. Can you help with me optimising my treatment and my settings 'Mode' set to AutoCPAP, Initial P = 5cm, Min APAP is 8.0cm, Max APAP is 12cm. I am getting Aerophagia and mask leakage is average 12 L/min. My 7 day avg is 8cm, AHI is 4 and P95 is 8.5cm. Hope all that helps and look forward to hearing back from you and or others?
Hello, I am experiencing this now and my pressure is at 4-20 on airsense 10. Can I switch it myself and how? I feel gassy and i can feel it all in my body chest I feel bloated. I wake up due to that because it scares me. I have had my machine for over 4 years. And I weigh less than what I started off with idk if that makes a difference?
Ive just started a Bi-pap. Having a bad time. The worst for me is severe abdominal gas pains. I am unable to adjust my own unit. Is there anything i can do to avoid this?
My pressure is 4-16 and I think it's making my hiatal hernia and gastritis worse and then I have a hard time breathing even more. But I have to breathe. You think I should change it to a shorter range or just one number? I'm really having a hard time
Hi nick , please help , I have auto set of 4-10 which has been lowered as I had nose surgery recently which has decreased my ahi from 78 to 15 but I suffer with swallowing a lot of air and bloating , can you please advise
Just leave it at 3 but if your AHI starts to go up then you might have to drop it down a little to 2 or 1 to provide additional airway stability during the end of expiration. Cheers
@CPAPReviews oh I see. Does your company provide a service for a fee to go over patient sleep data? I been using my cpap for 6 months with great success. But unfortunately, since 4 weeks ago, I'm constantly waking up with lower belly pain and gas. Can I possibly send you my sleep data for you to review for a fee? I just don't understand why I'm suddenly having this problem after 6 months. I just joined sleephq. Thank you!
Just got a new machine. I'm worried about the low pressure being to low. Can it be dangerous if my pressure needs to be higher. Plus didn't me that cool eclipse mask i wanted either. It's 5 to 20 range
I'm on cpap pressure was fixed and kept zooming up.to 20 and my mask leaked . Pressure was then.lowered to.15 starting on 4. Very very painful trapped wind began. Went down to 14 but ahi went up. They have now added soft pap at 2 that's the epr. But I'm.still swallowing tons of air even if i use a chin strap. Noone is giving me a solution I have a loweinstein prisma max machine with a humidifier and heated tube which has helped a bit with the severe dry mouth. Please help
I tried setting mine to 10 last night and I'm miserable with aerophagia & heartburn (again) today. Have been sleepy everyday for 9 months. Any suggestions what to do about the EPR setting? I currently have mine set to EPR 2.
He guys I need help and I don't who to ask for my prisma20a error 113. Any one know how to fix it? I couldn't find anything about it. Please any one know?
Help i have trouble falling asleep the air is too overwhelming. One time i did fall asleep it didnt even prevent my apnea just woke right up anyway heart racing.. so i gave up but need to try again i think. Why cant the dam thing have a lower ramp setting and tell when i passed out. Hi tech my arse
Personally, I would find another use for that water because who knows what might have gotten into the water -- ex: dust, pet dander -- things you don't want to be breathing in. So, you could water plants and flowers with it, etc.... just not let it go to waste. 🙂
I'm a new to using a coap for 3 months and bloating is horrible I'm so uncommy legs are bloating it's a lot of bloating. I'm having a hard time getting the bloating off I dontbesnt to eat anything because it makes it worse I'm getting scared it's going affect my heart

I had 13.5 events per hour
Night 2- I bypassed the clinical setting and dropped the pressure delivery to 6-12, thinking this might help with the bloating.
I am so sorry for all you went through!! are you feeling any better?
thanks Nicko!! I will also be trying this
That was extremely helpful.
Cheers
@@CPAPReviews Thanks Nicko I really appreciate it
I JUST had this happen a couple days ago.
I can barely get 6 hours.
4 to 5 hours of zzz here, not feeling the refreshing effect.
Been using CPAP trial for 2 weeks now and noticed bloating, stomach pains and larger than normal tummy.
Man o Man - I lost 150lbs on Keto, and I lowered my pressure from 12 to 10, but I noticed a lot of gas lately, and so I lowered it again to 9.5 - no gas now. Whew!! This is crazy.
Did you check your flow rate and how is your sleep after lowering the pressure?
I just discovered your channel and it has been so helpful. I'm still catching up on your videos and they are very informative. You have probably answered this in other videos but I haven't seen it yet. What Cpap machine do you use and recommend? Thank you for all you do to educate us!!!
Great video. Thank you. I highly recommend this site
Great video. Does the type of mask make a difference? Which one would you recommend?
Yes, because there's more dead space in a full face mask they are normally easier to breathe with but i recommend you try both full and nasal options. Cheers
Thanks a lot wowwww I tried exactly what you said in the video and it works perfectly woowww now no more leaking that goes to my stomach my pressure it is 6- 9 I fix it to 7 and works great woww I am very surprise and my events for 9 hours is .1 woow thanks a lot
You're very welcome. Glad it worked
Hi Nicko I'm from the UK is the sleep HQ International or Australia only am starting cpap tonight for first time.
Please, how can I get a copy of the software you are using so that I can also analyse my own data. I use ResMed 11.
Did you make any changes and are things better?
7hrs plus easy .
yes, Bloating, excess gas, Sour Stomach, Diarrhea
Here's a video that shows the process using a PC - ruclips.net/video/KKQ1iat-ni8/видео.html
yes but is she getting fullbreaths and maximum oxygen?
Well, that IS good news!
Any chance you could do a video discussing how to reduce drooling with full face masks, cheers.
How about EPR on a fixed pressure?
Can you do this with an ASV machine. When I turned of ramp which is basically the only measure I can tinker with because I'm on managed care. my settings are 10 0 10 but the machine will go up as high as 24 on a bad night. Getting rid of ramp seemed to help me get right into therapy and bring down early on o2 drops. Going bang into a full ten pressure does make me burp etc. I need the high pressures to control central sleep apnea CS breathing and a host of hypopneas and a few OAs.
I have a 3B Luna G30 and use a F30i mask can I use this theory with my machine? Ty
You can change it. Of course talk to your doctor too. You can find instructions on this RUclips channel. Good luck.
You really should check out my new vid i just dropped! It could be the solution - ruclips.net/video/cXW6uA9ZJcw/видео.html
Really which nose surgery you done????? Please telll pleaseee. I am very much concern for my father....please replyy
Can you get this if you are using just nose pillows and not a full face mask?
Are Bipap and Cpap part of your information and discussion?
Since min and max was changed to constant 7 pressure, do you have to adjust the epr setting too? Or just leave it still at 3?
It's 5 to 20 range
sir is it safe to use bmc cpap mask in resmed cpap machine???
How do people have such great scores? I am so frustrated and have tried several adjustments but my episodes are still pretty high. I am so tired. 😢
SleepHQ members mate. Head on over and check it out. Cheers
Noone is giving me a solution
I have a loweinstein prisma max machine with a humidifier and heated tube which has helped a bit with the severe dry mouth. Please help
I tried setting mine to 10 last night and I'm miserable with aerophagia & heartburn (again) today. Have been sleepy everyday for 9 months.
Any suggestions what to do about the EPR setting? I currently have mine set to EPR 2.
Try V-Com , it’s cheap and works well for some 👋
@@CPAPReviews - Thanks, got it on order!
He guys I need help and I don't who to ask for my prisma20a error 113. Any one know how to fix it? I couldn't find anything about it. Please any one know?
This didn’t work for me. Can’t sleep more than three hours without waking up full of gas. It’s so uncomfortable! Any other suggestions?
Is nobody going to address the haircut? I thought I was suggested a older video today.
He looks so smart. Could hardly recognise him at first glance . His videos are really informative
It's like having Huckups but a gasp of air
Dang ! 9 hours. I just started and so far I can do an hour and a half and I wake up and need a break from the mask and just the whole deal. 😂
How do you access that data
Sleephq.com its free to use
Help i have trouble falling asleep the air is too overwhelming. One time i did fall asleep it didnt even prevent my apnea just woke right up anyway heart racing.. so i gave up but need to try again i think. Why cant the dam thing have a lower ramp setting and tell when i passed out. Hi tech my arse
5:08 now the flow limit looks not so great. Probably she has a lot of flats at the peaks of her breath.
i use distilled water in my resmed 10 if gallon of distilled water is left open over night should i get rid on that gallon
Personally, I would find another use for that water because who knows what might have gotten into the water -- ex: dust, pet dander -- things you don't want to be breathing in. So, you could water plants and flowers with it, etc.... just not let it go to waste. 🙂
@@ranatlas thanks I didn’t use it after that but always nice getting a second person idea on what to do if that happens again
I fart a lot after waking up
I'm a new to using a coap for 3 months and bloating is horrible I'm so uncommy legs are bloating it's a lot of bloating. I'm having a hard time getting the bloating off I dontbesnt to eat anything because it makes it worse I'm getting scared it's going affect my heart
