EP1: Build and fill a raised bed for free - How I turned my lawn into a food oasis

  • From start to finish, here's how I built two raised garden beds and highlights of what we harvested from the same year.
    We decided to convert part of our lawn into a food source so that we can grow our own food for many years to come.
    As for filling the beds, no need to break the bank.
    Here’s how you can fill up a garden bed with free materials.
    - Layer of cardboard direct to ground to prevent weeds
    - Large rotted logs
    - Twigs and small branches to fill the gaps
    - Leaves and garden debris - Subsoil, compost and chicken manure
    - Final layer organic garden soil mix and worm castings from our worm bin Since we used large logs, this process will take away nitrogen from the soil to break it down.
    We made sure to feed the soil with compost, fertilizer and worm castings during the growing season.
    By Fall season, we rejuvenated the soil by adding green leaves, compost as well as a thick layer of brown leaves yo protect the soil from winter frost.
    This is a no dig bed, we continue to add organic matter on top each season.
    WHO WE ARE?
    We are Char and Marv
    @plantedinthegarden!
    Our primary goal is to get as many people to grow their own food.
    No matter the experience or space available.
    We are urban
    gardeners from Toronto that fell in
    love with growing food because
    not only is it amazing to eat fresh
    homegrown food, but you also know
    what you put into it and the joy you get when you share it with family, friends and the community.
    Gardening never
    stops for us; we are always looking
    for solutions to continue to grow our
    food - no matter what season. From
    outdoor gardening, garage grow tent
    to hydroponics, year-round gardening
    is truly possible. We believe
    in simple living, loving what you do,
    and doing it with love!
    Every year we start our garden, we learn something new and know that it's okay if it doesn't work out. There's always new growth to look forward to, so keep on learning.

    I am loving these beds but would you consider showing the layout of your garden on a graph? I really like your concept with garden bags, beds and even that u-shaped bed-trellis you made. Yep looking to build that for my garden. Also, how do you determine where to place your beds? Do you have sun through out your garden or did you do a sun graph? I hope you don't mind all the questions. I am just truly loving your garden and I would like to create my oasis in my back yard space. I would truly appreciate it, be blessed.

    What do you add to support the plants when the plants grow vertically? Is that fishing line tied to something above it? What are the supports made of?

    • @plantedinthegarden
      @plantedinthegarden  Год назад +4

      I used a method called lower and lean. Heavy duty wire running from end to end at the top. I then use nylon rope to support each tomato. As the tomato grows, nylon is moved to the side and allow the plant to lean. This keeps the height the same.

      Ours was 8'L x 3'W x 12"H because of our space. We purchased 2" x 12" x 12' Cedar lumber. But with this size lumber you can go 4 feet wide. Cut your lumber to (2x) 8 feet and (2x) 4 feet. We went with pocket screws for outdoors 2 1/2" and same size deck screws for the corner support. The lumber for that is 2x2 and size it to the height of the bed.
