Taiwanese from Taipei, I’m here to explain: In Asian culture, we have a tradition to bring gifts to the host when visiting families or friends in their home, and we would mostly bring some foods or fruits, like a simple cake or a box of apples. This is probably part of the reason why this vending machine is located in a metro (MRT) station, since in Taipei most of us are travelling around by MRTs, and the use of this machine is basically give you something to gift to your friends when entering their home, hence the practical tote bag with beautiful design, since this is basically a gift to start with.

It's never about the bag or packaging . It's about the ingredients . This cake shop didn't use over-the-top ingredients from Japan , that's why they only sell you @ 12 dollars . In Taiwan they even sell ONE small loaf of toast ( I'm not talking about the 2 feet long toast you get in Wal-mart ) @ USD$ 13.5 because they use some particular flour from Japan . Westerners really have to go out see the world . This world is much bigger than you think , seriously . It's very easy to find a cake which costs you USD $ 80 dollars or more ( 6 inch big ) in Asia and the reason why they're selling you so much is because the ingredients & work they put in . ( I'm not talking about custom-made cake , which obviously costs more ) .
