    Part 4: • Michael Jai White: Tar...
    Part 1: • Michael Jai White on T...
    --------
    Michael Jai White highlighted that he disagrees with the belief that Black actors do not sell overseas, stating that it isn't about race but the type of movies being produced. Action films and some horror films are more likely to generate revenue globally, while movies outside of these genres, regardless of the lead actor's race, may not be as successful. He champions action movies like those of Jackie Chan or Jet Li and believes they sell because they offer content that may be less available in other countries. White also stated that LGBT content does well, notably in India. He proposes a shift towards producing content with a worldwide perspective, insisting that there is a large fan base that needs to be catered to.

    Action is the universal language. Dramas & any movies with lots of dialogue might not translate as well because of speech patterns, colloquialisms & cultural differences that people might not understand or relate to. But somebody punching someone else in the face can't be mistranslated or misunderstood no matter if it's 2 karate-ka, 2 boxers, 2 amateur teens or 2 superhumans.

      People don't want to read movies.. You can watch an action flick just for the fight scenes and what not.. However, a drama or a romance from another country involves reading a lot of hard to see dialouge on screen in order to follow the plot.. No one in the world really wants to do that..

      Arnold was never the best actor but because he had the body of an Olympian or Duke Nukem archetype it made him perfect for big budget action films. It's totally believable that he could pick up a man with one hand, over power or fight multiple guys, or kick down a door.

      The sign of the times plays a big factor imo. In the 80's & early 90's..for my family anyway...any big film that was coming out..we were going to go see it. It didn't matter what type of genre it was..there were less outlets of content..same with television. In today's era filmmakers & producers are hard pressed to capture an audience and attain staying power..unless the content is super potent & powerful...this is where the youth today is somewhat missing out on certain content that they otherwise would have been almost forced to see back in the day.
      Hardly anyone asked for another damn iteration of the Color Purple..especially through the lens of these 'intersectional' feminist writers. You know it's bad when the first immediate action one takes upon hearing about a project is to look up who is behind the writing & producing. They have fucked up way too much content in the last ten years to afford grace, trust, and financial support from the public. The golden years of Spike Lee, Robert Townsend, Van Peebles, the Wayans, Hughes Brothers ect.. are long gone.

    One uncomfortable truth that no one is mentioning is that for actresses, looks are probably the most important factor in how big they get. There’s a reason Margot Robbie is the biggest actress in the world right now. And unfortunately Taraji isn’t hot enough to make the big bucks. And it ain’t just a black/white thing. Halle Berry was an A lister in her prime. Kerry Washington may not be a massive movie star, but she was the lead in a very successful TV show. Their looks helped them big time.

    • @PFlaw317

      There are several factors..acting chops, looks, network & what one is willing or not willing to do (political game, casting couch ect..)..and race is in there too..because in reality there's only going to be a certain amont of black so called 'A-listers'..men & women. • @davidortega3393
      @davidortega3393 6 месяцев назад +2

      @@PFlaw317 I mean, I’d say Zendaya is an A list actress who is a black woman. She gets roles that would traditionally go to white women. At the end of the day audiences will take attractive over white. And also, because most of the movie going public is white, and people tend to find their own race more attractive (with some exceptions), those “less attractive” white women get pushed because they’re considered more attractive to white audiences.

    • @PFlaw317
      @PFlaw317 6 месяцев назад +3

      @@davidortega3393 Well yeah, and that's why race will always play a factor in the States and other places. Ambiguous looking and or *bi-racial* women like Zendaya, Zoe Kravitz, Zoe Saldana ect..will always be more palatable to white audiences..it's not the only factor but a factor. I mean Zoe Saldana played Nina Simone for crying out loud. Not going to get into who is black and who isn't. But when people think of the common image of a black woman with two direct black parents..the face of Zendaya (a mixed woman who may identify as 'black') is not what comes to mind. Henson is comparable to Tichina Arnold, both attractive Black Women who can act..but they are only going to reach a certain level in the States.

    @Hotone1130 6 месяцев назад +20

    The problem with Vlad’s argument is that movies are a collaborative effort. You can be a stellar actor who kills the role, but a movie goes through months of editing before it’s released. To me, the editing is the deal breaker with how movies do, not the actors. So flop movies is a cop out for negotiating meetings in my opinion.

    • @BobbyJOnline
      @BobbyJOnline 6 месяцев назад +14

      No.. Editing has nothing to do with people showing up to Theaters. Nobody ever said, “I would’ve went to see that movie, but I heard they cut too early from a POV shot to an establishing shot.” … BUT, people won’t show up to see Color Purple (which lost $55M) when your press run is primarily you complaining instead of how good the movie is and bring your Family and Friends to check it out.

    There are some huge actors that have made lots of “flops” George Clooney lots of flops. Brad Pitt lots of flops. Tom Hanks lately lots of flops. Now I’m saying this without doing any real research into this but going off of memory they had lots of flops. I guess when you have a few hits it evens out.
    But to me there are two big factors in the Color Purple not being an initial success.
    1. No one asked for this remake and no one asked for the remake to be a musical. Which is a fact that was left out of the trailer.
    2. Movie going habits have changed dramatically since COVID. Most movies fail now. People would rather stream the movie at home rather than pay $15 for popcorn, $9 for a drink, $6 for candy $15-$20 for tickets. The one thing I get for free is the distractions in the theater. Cell phones going off. Conversations. Nah I’m good. I’ll watch the movie on whatever streaming service. What should be making a killing is the few drive in movies left.

    • @ronniedavis6889
      @ronniedavis6889 6 месяцев назад

      Movie habits have changed but people will go see something that they thing will be enjoyable. Barbie, Super Mario, Oppenheimer, Spider man etc were all suoer successful despite the price increase at the theaters. Nobody asks for remakes or sequels in general but they still come out if they believe money will be made. Nobody wanted to see the Color Purple so it didn't do well and it had nothing to do with Taraji being black. The first Color purple was trash and the latest one is worse and in my opinion it was a waste of time and resources doing it again. Majority of movies are trash nowadays even the ones on streaming services and even they are raising their prices for subscriptions. I'll keep watching my DVD's for the free for the most part.

    Michael Jai White was informative about how only certain movies translate overseas. According to Michael and the podcast host, that’s part of the reason some actors have difficulty securing well-paying and high-profile roles. Their strengths as actors and actresses don’t lend themselves to action flicks. It’s food for thought.
    However, his argument falls apart-to some degree- when you think about Hugh Grant, Helen Mirren, and Daniel Day-Lewis-all of whom have enjoyed success as actors in the American market. Add to that list Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis, Anthony Hopkins, Sophia Vergara, Salma Hayek, and Nicole Kidman. None of these actors and actresses have played, with any consistency, in action flicks. I, to be sure, am no producer, so I don’t know whether I’m comparing Apples and Oranges. Still, Tarej, Viola Davis, and Angela Bassett are in no way inferior to any of the stars named earlier. In fact, “some” of the ppl named earlier may be comparable to those three sistahs’, but none are better. Besides, how can you reality test that theory (only action movies translated overseas) if you are never given a chance?
    Let’s be honest. All three of those women, as great as they are, might still encounter great difficulty finding funding for their independent projects. Whether we acknowledge it or not, white rich males still hold the reigns of power in Hollywood, and they show little signs of sharing those reigns.
