He taught himself to play the drums after seeing The Beatles on their appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show in February 1964. He was also influenced as a teenager by rock drummer Dino Danelli. DeVitto got his big break in the music business when he was hired to play drums for Billy Joel in the mid-1970s. In an online interview, DeVitto describes how Joel's classic late 1970s-early 1980s band first came together: Billy and I used to play the same club in Plainview, Long Island, called "My House." He was 17 and in a band called The Hassles and I was 16 and in a band called The New Rock Workshop. We would watch each other play and acknowledge each other in passing. In 1974, he was living in Los Angeles and had already released Piano Man and Streetlife Serenade. He used studio musicians for the recording and different guys out on the road. I was playing in a band called Topper with Doug Stegmeyer and he got the gig to play bass with Billy on the "Streetlife" tour. He told Doug that he wanted to move back to New York and find a permanent band he could record and tour with on a regular basis. Doug recommended me because Billy was looking for a New York-type drummer, aggressive and hard hitting, and the rest is history. The three of us recorded the basic tracks for Turnstiles and we both recommended Russell Javors and Howie Emerson, who played guitars in Topper and with the addition of Richie Cannata on saxophone, the "Billy Joel Band" was born.[1] In addition to his work with Joel, DeVitto has also been an active session musician working with other big acts such as Carly Simon, Phoebe Snow, Karen Carpenter, Stevie Nicks, Rick Wakeman, Bob James and Meat Loaf. After working with Joel for 30 years, DeVitto was discharged from drumming duties for the 2006 Billy Joel tour for an unknown reason. Up to that point, he had the longest running tenure in Joel's band, starting with the recording of 1976's Turnstiles. As of 2018, DeVitto uses Liberty drums, pedals & hardware, Sabian cymbals, Evans drumheads, Latin Percussion and Pro-Mark drumsticks.[2][3] Devitto appeared on the November/December 2013 cover of Making Music magazine to discuss his life and career.[4] Around that time he began collaborations with Brooklyn singer-songwriter, Michael Sackler-Berner, which led to the founding of band The Slim Kings alongside bassist Andy Attanasio. The band toured with ZZ Top, Los Lonely Boys and continues to play in the tri-state region regularly. They recently worked with grammy winning producers Steve Jordan (Keith Richards, John Mayer) and Joel Hamilton (Tom Waites, Highly Suspect).[5] On October 23, 2014, DeVitto, Cannata, and Javors (with Stegmeyer, posthumously) were inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame, primarily for their work with Joel.[6] Shortly thereafter, DeVitto, Cannata, and Javors officially formed The Lords of 52nd Street band; the band also includes a pianist and lead vocalist, keyboardist, and a guitarist, and plays faithful renditions of the recorded Joel originals.[7] Lawsuit On May 19, 2009, DeVitto filed a lawsuit in Manhattan's state Supreme Court claiming Joel and Sony Music owed DeVitto over 10 years worth of royalty payments. DeVitto has never been given songwriting credit on any of Joel's songs. DeVitto's lawyer added that he does not know exactly how much DeVitto is owed, and that Joel's record sales are subject to an audit.[8] In April 2010, it was announced that Joel and DeVitto "amicably resolved" the lawsuit.[9] Philanthropy In 2003, DeVitto signed on as an official supporter of Little Kids Rock, a nonprofit organization that provides free musical instruments and instruction to children in underserved public schools throughout the U.S.A. @Otneimica Estás canciones son un asco, por eso cuando estados Unidos invadió Panamá puso estás canciones para sacar de la embajada de el Vaticano a Noriega.
I was an 80s child too. Billy Joel's "Innocent Man" was some of the earliest popular music I ever remember hearing (maybe 4 or 5 years old). Later, I remember "We didn't start the fire" on VH1, and "River of Dream" was one of the first CDs I ever bought. I didn't know his 70s material until I heard it on classic rock stations later! You know music is classic, when it feels fresh and relevant to today.
I love this song so much. Everything about it is so condescending towards the "Big Shot" Billy's talking about, and this music video accentuates this so much, especially how Billy pantomimes being "fancy" and "proper" after he gets up from the piano. I consider this song to be my personal anthem.
The song's about Bianca Jagger. Billy went out on the town with them in New York back in the seventies. And Bianca was such a loud mouth pain in the ass that she even got on her husband's nerves and inspired Billy Joel to write a song about her. As a character from South Park would say wow what a bitch.. BTW he wasn't pantomiming being proper and fancy he was pantomiming Mick Jagger and how Mick Jagger dances. So you might say in this video that that Billy Joel had the moves like Jagger he had the moo oo oo oo ooves like Jagger. I bet Billy Joel laughed his ass off when he first heard that song by Maroon 5 . LOL
Born in 81, Billy was a big deal back then...but I have to thank 'the boys' for bringing me back to Billy.. Now I play instruments and see Billy in a whole diff way to back then... Got to thank creators of that show or I could have died not realizing the genius of that guy on radio when I was a kid. Billy one of best pop musicians ever.
He even looks like he's channeling his inner Mick Jagger in this video. Hadn't seen this video in months & never noticed it till now. Billy Joel has always been so cool!!😎😎
when he says : "no,no,no you had to bèee â big shot dèeed-jhà" in that accent towards the end I giggle at a high pitch with chills ...I can't explain it 😂
I might have this totally wrong, but when I heard this part when I was a little kid I imagined a New York-Italian mother giving him/someone a scolding 😎
He's impersonating Mick Jagger because this song is about Bianca Jagger, hid then-wife, with whom Billy Joel had a crazy night where she made a fool of herself.
I remember my newly divorced mom 1979 rocking this album to me. She was SUPER square but I remember asking her to explain 'The spoon up your nose' part and her stammering. haha. Love this song to this day nc the lyrics are AWESOME!

You can't compare Billy with anybody else. I've been a fan for 46 years. Keep Rockin Bill!!!
He's said in interviews it's based off stories Mick Jagger told him about his ex-wife Bianca. TBH I wouldn't be surprised if this is also a self-reflective piece, as he has struggled with alcohol for a number of years.

NOW'S OUR CHANCE TO BE A [[BIG SHOT!!!]]
This is my favourite Billy Joel song.
Tight sound! This was 1978. Forty-two years ago. That's a long-ass time to sound this fresh.
Never heard this song until The Boys. Flew on over to YT to listen to the whole thing.
i heard like 1 second of this song before Amazon skipped to the next episode of The Boys but i was like THAT SONG
@@Gwyn1stborn Yes, they upset me when they skip to the next episode when there is a great song playing

Noname One of the best singer songwriters of our time !
I love metal but I've learned great music crosses all genres!
do you like the hardcore punk?
Tbh, if you swapped the instruments for more metal sounding instruments, this would be a metal song. It follows the format pretty well.
The drummer....so perfect for a sync-performance.
pure talent. his songs are just stories about his life.
Billy Joel seems like the kind of guy who was [[number 1 salesman 1997]]
I heard that Billy wrote this song about Bianca Jagger, but I can think of about a hundred people I've known in my life that this song could apply to!
it was for his first wife
It was 100% about Bianca Jagger. Billy confirmed it in multiple interviews.
I never knew that. it reminds me of studio 54.
He even looks like he's channeling his inner Mick Jagger in this video. Hadn't seen this video in months & never noticed it till now. Billy Joel has always been so cool!!😎😎
I’m like 100% certain that this song is about him
This gives me douche chills. The drummer is affected as hell.
when he says : "no,no,no you had to bèee â big shot dèeed-jhà" in that accent towards the end I giggle at a high pitch with chills
...I can't explain it 😂
I might have this totally wrong, but when I heard this part when I was a little kid I imagined a New York-Italian mother giving him/someone a scolding 😎
I hear a Mafia boss telling a young upstart he overstepped his bounds lol
He's impersonating Mick Jagger because this song is about Bianca Jagger, hid then-wife, with whom Billy Joel had a crazy night where she made a fool of herself.
Billy Joel is the greatest solo artist of all time.
This [BIG SHOT] got my ears [hooked], it [KNOCKED ME OUT]
Wayoff P from downtown WAYOFFFFF!
I remember my newly divorced mom 1979 rocking this album to me. She was SUPER square but I remember asking her to explain 'The spoon up your nose' part and her stammering. haha. Love this song to this day nc the lyrics are AWESOME!
Definitely a song about his favorite Leo. 🦁
This is one of the greatest songs of our generation. Always a great song writer.
The drummers having the time of his life back there and I would too if I had the privilege to work with Billy Joel.
I came here to make a Spamton joke but I see I've been beaten to the punch. Well done lads.

I think this was probably Billy Joel's single best song.
Mankind hadn't discovered power chords yet 'til the 80's, I can't imagine what people like Joel would have done w/ them in his prime
Power chords definitely existed before the 80s. Billy Joel would have been well aware of the existence of power chords, they’re just not his style.
This will not be as before, this becomes a BIG SHOT
For your battle with i. Zions God. Already won. Finished it and your whole world's kingdoms. And this city. Best know there's more. To ask for Than what they know now in Zion !
Billy Joel really took his chance to be a big shot
OhMan! I had this album when it came out. My buddy Jerry and I completely wore it out!! It makes me upset to hear that a few of these so called agents of his went behind his back and stole from him but I'm sure he learned his lesson and is doing well these days. You can't compare Billy with anybody else. I've been a fan for 46 years. Keep Rockin Bill!!!
My mom had this on vinyl and I used to sing this song when I was like 4-5 years old. Lol
It was his brother in law who was his manager. The song is about his 1st wife. They both took advantage of his success.
You can tell by how expressive & animated he is, that the song is personal. I am inclined to believe it is, about his first wife.
He's said in interviews it's based off stories Mick Jagger told him about his ex-wife Bianca. TBH I wouldn't be surprised if this is also a self-reflective piece, as he has struggled with alcohol for a number of years.
I read it was about Bianca Jagger
I look forward to working with Billy and my other good brothers including Beloved George(who I hope to hear from soon) as well as a God Greek Man and our other good brothers who are interested in seeking and recording these beautiful Mineral Emissions and in Welcoming Our Family from Onboard Who Sends Them.
Your actually working with him?
@@foobstr2569 No. Not as of yet but am told that he and some others are interested in understanding these emissions that I photograph... I am told I will hear from someone and we will come together soon.
Thanx for asking & God Bless

I used to think Billy Joel was “old people” music. Now sure enough, here I am years later trying to rock out to some Billy Joel and there’s all these kids referencing some fucking video game I’ve never heard of. Funny how things change.
We`re not all kids especially since Deltarune does a little language and has deep dark lore, just well that`s what you get when you find two songs with the same name
I don’t know how undertale, and deltarune are pretty big, but it’s worth trying them, and the character they are referencing is actually a really mature, and deep character we can all relate to.
@@djamtz It’s still rated teen, but yes, and UnderTale broke me mentally.
Liberty just lighting up the background. Ha ha ha ha Love the punchiness of this tune.
Superb songwriting, excellent musicianship…
The drummer is actually the musical director of this whole thing.

So, this is what Spamton listens to every time in the dumpster, huh? For a failed businessman, he sure has a great taste in music! 👍
