100% agree on business class, what a disaster! The old business class was the best seat in Europe and overall these new seats are all boxed in and resemble a school bus. How in the world would the best rail company in Europe come up with this horrible design on their flagship train! This is a huge mistake in my opinion

Travelled recently with these in 2nd class on the nearly 7h journey from Bologna to Munich. While the seats were rather hard, the padding was enough and the recline also decent enough to make the journey quite comfortable. What I liked the most was the high level of privacy of the seats and the large tables. The ambience was rather nice too, with nice warm colours throughout. I have not been on the older Railjets, but I honestly don't mind these at all. Gendered toilets are a rather weird choice and I wished the headrest and seat was not too hard, but bearable enough even for a longer journey.
We're in a transition towards level boarding currently. This is an imperfect solution having so many steps internally but necessary with the Siemens design approach, retaining conventional bogies with high floor sections over them at the vehicle ends and providing a low floor 'well' section in the middle containing the external doors. By contrast, the new ICE-L design in Germany will have a fully level floor internally at the same height as German platforms (majority 760mm). The trains are from Talgo and their unique running gear design allows the intercar passageway to pass between the tops of the wheels and remain completely level throughout the length of the train. The ride quality of Talgos with fewer wheels tends to be poor relative to a traditional bogie arrangement however. While the main driver for level boarding is disabled accessibility, other operational benefits are easier, faster, more confident boarding for all and fewer minor trip and fall incidents that can cause delay.
if you think this is bad get ready for the 3rd generation which will be the Stadler KISS, btw with no cafeteria only machines, in theory because it will be used in shorter routes with high demand. at the end of the day in the new open market paradign operators must compete and if westbahn is able to lower prices by adding density obb must to, because at the end of the day regardless of what they say people only want cheap travel. it is like with airplanes where everyon is indignant about ryanair yet theyre still number one in passangers
you miss the part where they are not going to operate on the longer distance trains but more on the Line Wien - Salzburg on the slower service where people for relations like Wien - Linz or Wien - Salzburg would rather take the faster RJX service anyways. The question is, will you need a dining car for a relation such as Wien - Amstetten?
Thank you for a very informative video. I love the old Railjet trains. The only problem with them is the steep steps at all DOORS. On these new trains MOST of the doors are level boarding, but there is now only one door per carrriage. So stop dwell times (now a big problem in Austria because of the huge increase in long-distance passengers caused by 1095 Euros-a-year Klima Ticket) are going to be very long. The paper rubbish bags idea seems to have been (half) borrowed from Scandinavia. However, in Scandinavia, each seat bay usually has a large supply of bags. The passengers put their rubbish in a bag and then LEAVE THE BAGS IN THE BINS BY THE DOORWAYS.
Yeah as a Scandinavian I also prefer this solution. Having a tiny dirty trash bin next to you the whole ride, which likely smells of filth and rot the whole time is not very attractive, not to mention very unsanitary. Though the bags aren't my cup of tea either and DSB have now discontinued the plastic bags too. Even when they were in place, I still usually got out of my seat and walked to the nearest set of trash bins at the doors for throwing out anything like a doggy bag of food.
I can understand the critic in all but one point. The steps are just a necessary tradeoff. Yes you could pretend the old railjet was technically accessible via lifts but this "solution" is less than a good one for people requiring it. Someone always has to operate it and it takes time and personnel to do so and the lifts were even often broken. The goal is that people with disabilities can use public transport without help and the old mesures did not provide this. If the lift could be used by the person autonomously this would be at least a slightly different case. This way however its better for the train to be low floor and that means either steps like here or ramps like Stadler uses. The rest of the critic I find verry understandable. Businessclass is useless now and compartment I did never really find usefull in general. Shrinking the dining car to next to nothing is definitely a big step back as well although I understand why they did it, ÖBB is literally being overrun by passengers as of late, because the government introduced new cheap season tickets, so they are under a lot of pressure to squeeze as much seeting into the allready ordered trainsets as they can. I still think the new railjet, although modern, feels like a downgrade to safe money and ressources.
@@jgcondron The standard height in Germany is quite high, 76 cms. The modern stations in both Austria and Switzerland are 55 cms. One of the reasons for the success of the Swiss train manufacturer Stadler is that it builds trains with wide doors allowing fast level boarding from 55 cm platforms. Austrian Railways (OBB) has just placed a large order for Stadler double-deck trains, desperately needed because of the increase in traffic caused by the 1095 Euros a year Klima ticket. The lower deck of individual carriages is fully accessible.
Fully level boarding benefits all travellers and the operator with quicker boarding and fewer trip and fall incidents that can cause delays. Just wheel luggage, baby buggies, cycles straight on and off. Less heavy lifting of luggage and people struggling with steps.
The business class and the restaurant are the only reasons why I currently choose the train when I travel from Bregenz to Vienna. If that doesn't happen, I change planes. It's about the same price but doesn't take half as long.
tell me, how many planes are going from Bregenz to Vienna? Ahh right, you first have to get over to Altenrhein in Switzerland and find one of the few planes. I just came from a NIghtJet train from Bregenz to Vienna. Only 25€ surcharge with a Klimaticket :)
I recently took an older Railjet business class from Vienna to Budapest. The seats were sculpted and very comfortable as they not only reclined but also had a footrest that raised the legs. Well worth the extra 15 euro. The train left a couple of minutes late, but ended up arriving about 25 minutes late as we had to stop/slow down along the way to, according to the announcement, ‘ensure proper spacing on the railway.’ 🤔
I took this train from Munich to Verona a couple of weeks ago and was actually very impressed with it. So I would somewhat disagree that it's not great, because I think it really is. Certainly one of the best train services I've been onto, and I've been to most of the best train services in Europe and Asia. One thing that I was especially impressed with on this train was the food and reasonable prices, for a train at least. While I do agree with issues like steps in the interior of the train and gendered toilets (that one IS weird, I agree), those aren't really a big deal. The reality is that hardly any trains in Europe offer real step-free accessibility. From what I know, more or less the only country in the world that has that in all stations on its new HSR system, thanks to standardized ~1.1m high platforms. Also, perhaps Japan and Taiwan? Therefore pointing out steps inside the train as a limiting factor for accessibility in this, or any other European train, in my view, isn't completely fair in that regard. One thing that I really agree with and what really surprised me in a negative way was the rather poor seat ergonomics in 1st class. Seats are HUGE, well padded, legroom is massive, materials are very high quality and everything would be great, except the fact that those seats aren't designed with ergonomics in mind and after a longer journey my back started hurting a little bit, which was really something I did not expect! I really wonder what were the designers of those seats thinking? Did they just believe that ergonomics don't matter? As for Business class, I was also surprised, because I actually wanted to book it and couldn't find the Single seat in the seat map. Took me some time to realise that they were not available on the new trains. Still, all in all, I think this is a great train and it is "that good" since it is, after all, one of the best trains in Europe, only coming second or third after the likes of Frecciarossa Executive or Italo Salotto class which are rather extreme and perhaps even unnecessarily luxurious as far as train classes in Europe go.
Well I had ppl standing in my face in the old Business Class carriage after another train was cancelled, presumably I would have avoided this on the new Railjet
@@NonstopEurotrip You also aren't in a wheelchair though, so maybe our opinion doesn't really matter that much here. Though to be honest, I don't think I mind steps on the train that much - how often do you really walk around the train if you're not making a video of it?
@@SilentdragonDe fair point, and of course all passengers matter. That why I cover accessibility as much as I do. This isn't just about wheelchair users tho, people with reduced mobility would struggle to move through the train now, whereas before they could. And I'm not just talking about boarding. Going to the dining car, toilets, etc
Person who cannot do steps: "How do I get to the vending machines now?" OBB: "Simply ask your travel companion to get something for you." "No Wolfgang. Me being unable to do steps does not mean I travel with someone, or that I want people to do things for me."
Fun fact: original business class on Eurocity trains was in compartments. When ÖBB introduced the first generation of Railjets, they were heavily criticised for changing business class seating to open plan. Now they changed it back to compartments... And its the one thing people seem to hate most about the train. I guess whichever way they would do it, itd be the wrong way. 😅
departing station may indeed be not as aesthetically pleasing but i would commend one aspect of it upon entry: the abundabce of natural light flooding the interior! but would also have to agree with you on the less desirable elements of this new train set, particularly the less accessible layout, claustrophobic seating and the time-warp induced gendered loos (what year are we??) look forward to your ICE marathon ; )
I totally agree with your points (especially about the business class). However the comparison shouldn't be between the old and the new Railjet, but between the old EC trains and this new Railjet. After all it is replacing those trains and not the Railjets. In that case some points are still true, but the trains have Wifi now and finally some food (again) which was a big pain in the last years on the EC lines. Considering that the old 1st class only consisted of compartment coaches (however with 4 compartments of the ex businness class) it is a slight improvement that there's more choice for comfort oriented travellers. In fact the old EC trains were booked out completely in summer and I guess with the supplement for Business there will be more spontanously reserveable seats available for 1st class ticket holders. With the Business class: I hope the same will happen as with the Business class on ÖBB-IC/EC-trains.... it died... and became a normal first class. Maybe it's their plan and they are just trying out if people are okay to pay extra to sit in a compartment.
Sounds like a good idea. Given the enormous pressures on capacity caused by the 1095 Euros a year Klima Ticket Austria desperately needs for its daytime longer distance trains double-deck trains with WIDE level boarding doors to ensure that stop dwell times are not excessive.
@Nonstop Eurotrip the 1216 locomotive number 1216 025/E 190 025 is a world record locomotive due to that it reached during trials a top speed of 357 km/h(222 mph) on the highspeed line near Nürnberg on 2 September 2006 before it was delivered to the ÖBB
The new ÖBB business class is actually even worse. The foldable tables in bussiness class are so wobbly that it's pretty much impossible to work on them with a laptop.
I priortize car now after all the delayed train experiences with awful OBB. I now travel by train only if there's no connecting train I've to reach. First you pay for a seat reservation in your connecting train, then you'll miss it and all you've paid for is standing in an overbooked train. OBB doesn't deliver in everyday usage, it's more of an marketing company that doesn't care much of the people who use it.
I remember when I when I travel with the same locomotive on the route ec 83 from Munich hbf to Verona and passed from all the stations that you include in this amazing video. Great job! 👍
How did you like the fact that once you pass the border to Germany the carriages do not have floor level access? I noticed that at a new train arriving in Munich main station. Billions in Euros for new trains in Germany and Austria but no aligned height of the platforms.
Being an Australian, when I travel to Europe I have a larger (heavy) suitcase, as we normally holiday for 2 to 4 weeks at a time. I hate the entry of trains up many steep steps. So I much prefer the level boarding. Steps inside are easier when you don’t have a suitcase. Also I love looking at the outside views, and think the headrest sides on the seat would obstruct that view?
I’ve done all the way from Munich to Bologna and I ve been disappointed about the short space between the seats, in first class. I really asked myself why I’ve I chosen the first class when I don’t get the space for my 1,90 m body. Next time I’ll leave the train at the first possible stop in Italy to change to a frecciarossa service. It’s much better and more comfortable.
The internal steps are necessary to provide step free entrance. For most of the other points I am with you. But some of them - like the toilets - can be changes easily.
I always loved travelling on the Railjet trains compared to my home in the UK,I hope they are not letting their standards drop which your video seems to show.Hope someone is listening.❤
I personally have not taken this train yet, so I can't say much but I think the low floor entrances without stairs are extremely important for better accessibility and passenger flow. Boarding is just so much faster on low floor trains. Also keep in mind that these trains were originally designed for the slower Wien-Salzburg RJ which will run with KISS 200 units from 2026 instead. The reason they are now used on the Brenner route is the lack of other suitable rolling stock (Italy's regulations about fire safety will become stricter soon, although unnecessarily so) and that single deck trains would not be able to cope with the sheer amout of passengers on Wien-Salzburg. This is (I assume) also the reason for the weird business class since the double deck RJ will feature no business class at all.
I prefer the new seats! These provide more privacy and are equally comfortable. Do prefer the old Business configuration though, however I am surprised about all the negative comments about the new style. I always seem to be the only pax in that category anyway and kept wondering when OEBB will give up this seemingly “unwanted” product. Ultimately, the decision will be a commercia, rather than an emotional one! Great work OEBB! One Love
Took this very train yesterday from Wörgl to Munich in first class! I agree with you about the business class, a very poor offering compared to the older ones and not worth it. Having tested the Railjet 1 many times in all classes I'd say the new first class seats are more comfortable than the originals in my opinion. I didn't walk through the train so I didn't really notice all the steps. The old EuroCity coaches, much as I love them, are now getting very dated so definitely an upgrade.
I work with them and it's a crazy ride always with too much technology that's not working as wished. The Night train is another issue too... I got accidentally burned by hot water 85 degrees hot!!! Crazy 😢
Hello Nonstop Eurotrip You video was very good. I took the train often between Kufstein and Innsbruck and returning to Vienna. I really like the Seats in 1st class. In my opinion the Railjet 2 is good. Yes of course the toilets are the same, but in Austria it is desired that there are separate toilets, the ÖBB has caught up with what other companies ( like Westbahn- Private Operator) have already introduced 5-8 years ago. I have to say the new possibility with low floor and then the small stairs up ( you can us the help groove) is better than 1 Meter in a door up. You need stairs otherwise how should it work🤷🏽♂️ The low floor is now better for older people or disabled persons The Problems I ( or should I say WE understand, too) No Garbage box is bad The Business Class is on the train not worth. We as related to the ÖBB we also didn't like it. What should I we can't change These 2 things now, but we are not alone. Other ÖBB staff complaint, too.
I shall be taking exactly this train tomorrow (in the opposite direction), so thanks for the tour. I have travelled business class in the old Railjet and found it extremely underwhelming - I even gave up on it, and reseated myself into the first class. I find the first class on the Railjet not nearly so comfortable as in an ICE. The seats are hard and boxy (not the case on an ICE) and the whole gives the impression of having been designed primarily for ease of cleaning. I dislike the plastic seat covering (the second class moquette is pleasanter) and the predominance of hard plastic surfaces. Compared with the excellent TGV first class (that's how to do it), the Railjet gives the impression of our old German "Silberlinge", the so-called "n-Wagen" or "Holzklasse" of the 1960's.
@@NonstopEurotrip It was the EC to Venice, which I stayed in until Innsbruck. The stock was the pre-Railjet Austrian IC-stock. I was in a 1st Class compartment which was very quiet, had softly sprung leather upholstery, good airconditioning and lots of space (four seats in the compartment). I can't tell you how much better this feels than a Railjet. My onward journey from Innsbruck took me by Railjet Mk. 1 to Buchs SG: There I lost my connection because the Railjet (RJX 162) was 25 minutes down. The 1st Class non-compartment carriage was very full, pretty uncomfortable in a Ryanair sort of way, and cramped. I ordered a meal to my seat, which was very good and recommendable (Faschierte Laibchen with a glass of Zweigelt). Conclusion: ÖBB, give us the IC carriages back!
Good luck with your plans to travel to 10 German cities within 24 hours. With the observed average delay of the ICE's during the last few days you can be happy if you achieve 5 or 7 cities. 😊
My country to make trains more accessible decided to raise up all platforms so now there's no steps except of few stations where there's ramps to enter the train. I'm kinda curious why Europe decided to lower down the trains floor instead.
With a First Class Eurail pass, I remember I can travel in Railjet's Business Class free of charge on sections outside Austria, I took advantage of this perk when I last visited Germany and old Railjet's BC was so good! Quite, private and comfortable. Sad to see it go. With the new RJ's BC I wouldn't bother to walk down to BC even if there's no additional charges.
While Business class certainly is a disaster, I like the new First class seats more that the old ones - the old ones, although wide, are quite hard, and I therefore don't find them comfortable
So, the 2 main questions I'm left with after watching this very good review: 1. Is it the ultimate goal of OBB to replace all original Railjets with this new product in the end or will it only be used on specific lines? 2. Can you know in advance if you will have a Railjet 1 or 2 during the booking process? In other words, can you find out if the Business class upgrade will be worth it or not depending on the train type?
1. Initially to replace the hauled EuroCity sets then to expand and complement the OG fleet. 2. Yes, look in the seating plan when you go to book a seat and you can clearly see the 2x 4 seat business class compartments at one end of the first class coaches 👍🏻
The RailJet 1 trainsets will definitely not be replaced ;-) Furthermore the RailJet1 transits will be even modernized in the near future. Currently the ÖBB has way to less high speed coaches so replacing ones from the 2000-2010s would be stupid if their are even ones from the 80s with no air conditioning in service (Vienna to Villach) The eight RailJet 2 trainsets which are from the first series travel ONLY on the route Munich Verona. All other RailJet Services will be still hauled by first generation. In the future their are 19 more RailJet 2 trainsets and even 14 new double decker trainsets ;-) The 19 more RailJet 2 will travel on the new Koralmbahn from Villach - Klagenfurt - Graz to Vienna. And the double Decker RailJet on Services from Vienna to Salzburg
I agree with the problems with the layout. Personally I'd have only done 2 or at most 3 low-floor cars, so there would be less stairs throughout the train. Especially putting the dining car in a low floor section is completely pointless, as it's not reachable from the rest of the train without climbing stairs anyways. Also putting the bicycle/ski space upstairs (and around a tight corner from the entrance) is just weird (here I would have designed a proper luggage compartment in place of the accessible toilet, basically using the same wall parts). I also expect that the lack of waste bins will backfire, especially as these trainsets are intended for long distance routes and the staff is most certainly not going to remove full waste bags during the journey and/or stock up at the final destination (if they even have stock there, which I also highly doubt). So passengers will probably put them on the floor where some will inevitably spill their contents at the first tight curve. Granted the tiny "waste drawers" in the old generation Railjets are becoming increasingly gross (because they are quite cumbersome and labor-intensive to clean), but adding proper, easily accessible (and therefore easily maintainable) bins at least every couple of rows (eg. between the seatbacks of two 4-seat bays and/or integrated in the luggage racks) would have solved that elegantly.
A compartment (as long as you have it to yourself) is great for quietness and privacy, but I'm not sure whether that's worth €15 extra. That awkward arrangement with the internal steps is rather like the ICNG in the Netherlands which reviewers seem to rave about, only there you also have the additional fun of lots of internal doors to fight your way through as well
A suggestion for you - I was at Bratislava Hlavna Stanica a few days ago and I noticed a railjet train heading for Zurich along side our train. That looks like an interesting Journey! Great video by the way.
Innsbruck Hbf doesn't just have a lounge (restricted access) but also a decent waiting room (with comfortable seating and electric plugs) as I didn't find it in any other ÖBB station where you usually just have some seats in the middle of the hall with much more disturbances. As for the new railjet, I still have to try it. It's not operating on my main routes (which would be Wien to Graz/Villach/Venezia).
Not too bothered about business class, never used it anyway. I honestly despised the second class seating in the old railjet, the fact that these come with a recline function is already an upgrade to me. Also, I ran into the pointy armrests of the first railjet multiple times and it is very painful.

I travelled with the new Railjet from München to Innsbruck in April in the Business Class and was disappointed about it.
The new Railjet is also capable of 230 km/h. About the wifi, it can be pretty good. But doing a speedtest while crossing the border is kinda rigged. As soon as all ECs are replaced with RJ2s on the Munich - Innsbruck (-Italy) routes, RJ2s are planned to be used on the Südbahn routes (Wien - Graz, Wien - Villach)
I agree with you on several points, but as an Austrian, I do still prefer the new Railjet over the old. I love the brighter, warmer atmosphere and the new privacy features. Business class is an obvious let-down, but I much prefer the first class on the new Railjet to the old one! I also hate the gendered toilets - but at least that's only rather minor (unless you're non-binary I suppose).
I came to Innsbruck one day using the Nightjet service from Graz to Zürich! I arrived very early at the station and took a nap because I was in a full sitting compartment, so I hadn't slept much... I feel a bit frustrated that I couldn't see the incredible views from the train as it was still dark
The internal steps are ridiculous, even here in the US that would never be permitted on a new train for accessibility reasons. This was a deliberate choice by OBB, we use a variant of these cars in the US as the new Amtrak Venture cars and Brightline cars and they have no internal steps and full level boarding at stations with 51 inch platforms, or a wheelchair lift for stations with low platforms.
Business class can be described as a bad joke. The seats in first class are average, and in second class they are a total mess. The first generation railjet is much better
VERY good improvements! I find the complaints about the new business class silly; every time I traveled in this class I was the ONLY person in the compartment (Vienna airport - Linz). All of a sudden, everyone is so annoyed by the changes? How odd? I would think that the improvements to the most popular classes (Economy & First), more than make up for the downgraded Business seats! I LOVE the new Railjet design! VERY comfortable! One Love
Totally agree with u! I’d also add that a lot of people can’t stand the inshell “recline”, and even Cathay Pacific had to get rid of them after all the complaints. I honestly dunno what were ÖBB n Siemens thinking with these “premium” cabins. Did I see an EVA sticker?? 😍😍 go Taiwan!!!
The ÖBB used the replace old stuff with new worse stuff a lot. Just look at the Wiener Schnellbahn... every day at least 5 broken doors in the new trains. They are just unreliable as hell and have less standing capacity as well as beeing horribly ventilated because of the AC.
In 2008 the first Railjets (Siemens Viaggio Taurus) arrived on the market, the next generation should essentially follow the same path and be based on the Nightjet 2 (Siemens Viaggio 2 Vectron?). But the Austrian Federal Railways ÖBB seems to be heading towards the same solution as the WestBahn with these KISS 3. for 2026. However, for the Easter holidays 2024, the first Railjet 2 units have arrived. The next generation Railjet was developed and built by Siemens Mobility Vienna and is based on the same platform used by the new Nightjet trains. ÖBB had initially ordered eight trains, but has now ordered an additional 19, for a total of 27 Next Generation Railjets without bringing in my opinion any real improvement in comfort, especially in business class for equipment that has been planned for the future Brenner tunnel of nearly 60 km... What about the 50 ÖBB 1216 TAURUS 3 locomotives manufactured in Munich which is a request of the ÖBB on the basis of the ES64F4 locomotive? Compatibility problems with the new pilot cars of the new Railjet and Nightjet designed to work with Vectron!!
Fun Fact: this was planned to be marketed as an InterCity initially. With 200 km/h maximum. Maybe that would have made more sense considering them not committing to a real business class here.
Unlike the other reviewers you made a honest report: the train is actually a downgrade from previous version and it's starting to look like a regional train (just like the new double-decker Intercity in Germany). One low floor car per set would be quite enough. Business class is a joke and even the seats in 1st class became somehow bench-like. It looks like the whole layout is being ryanaired. I'd suspect that they are silently planning to introduce a more stylish and comfortable train in the future, introducing a new brand like "Super Rail Jet" to charge more for it. Just my 2 cents. And I agree 100% with "why fix if it ain't broken".
The most comfortable train seats I've ever experienced were the old bench style seats, so if they are anywhere near that good I don't mind it. I have my doubts though, sadly.
Hello nice video!!! I agree with the business class it's very down , but for the step inside, in France its the same issue with ours double deck trains, plateform is full accessible but some steps for the rooms ,
it does seem odd that if accessibility was the end goal....why the stairs ???? and the seats look kinda thin and firm...otherwise it seems on the surface... minor quibbles...and i question your assessment about the paper trash bags being environmentally unfriendly ....as the bins often are lined with plastic bags...
@@NonstopEurotrip I find bags the cleaner and possible also cheaper option as no cleaning of hundreds of bins is required day after day. I assume that the environmental impact of paper bags is small compared to manufacturing bins and for using detergents etc. The Nordics have been using bags instead of bins for ages.
I travelled a few times in business class on the "old" RJ-sets. This was really a special experience. But the "new" BC is just a joke. I am not even sure the new 1st class is worth the price (ok, it is likely to be less crowded, but if 2 persons are travelling together (and reserve seats in advance), 2nd class will do. Biggest disappointment is the further dowinsizing of the "buffet-compartment" (you could not call this a dining car even on the old RJ). - On a full train "service to the table" never works, because the 2 members of staff cannot manage to serve all requests, but with hardly any seats in that thing, this is going to be a most unpleasant experience. The new RJ is, what in German language is known as a "Verschlimmbesserung" (roughtly translating to "improvement by making it worse...")
Like what I've seen on some other train channels, it's quite a disappointment. But when you come think that it is currently a replacement of the old EC trains serving Northern Italy to Bavaria via Innsbruck, then it is an upgrade. And I agree, the €15 business class addition should be avoided
@@NonstopEurotripWell the old EuroCity trains on the Brennerbahn don't have a Restaurant car anymore because during COVID they weren't allowed to operate them in Italy. So ÖBB just not used them and let them sit on a track for 2 years and then were surprised that they are not working perfect anymore...
Sorry, I've missed the Amex card number on the front side... and can you show us the design of the rear side as well? 😁💸 Great videos by the way.. See you in CZ soon... the new ČD ComfortJet are officially running from This week...
Hey, nice video. As for the train itself, I generally think it's great and I even find the seats very comfortable. The business class thing was clearly a misstep, there's no denying that. Fortunately, you can exchange seats, said one of the ÖBB once. Accessibility is a difficult issue, I think they should have done it like with the new Nightjets, with all cars generally having steps at the doors and one car with barrier-free doors. Personally, it doesn't bother me the way it is now, as I rarely move through the entire train. The thing about the gender-segregated toilets is pretty unnecessary, but it doesn't bother you, does it? (Of course no one on the train pays attention to it anyway xd)
13:11 Am I missing something? Passengers get a table if they can transfer to a seat, but they don't have a table if they remain in their wheelchair? I see only one table here.

In the end of the line - i love all OBB trains and wagons , passenger and cargo , i love austria and deuchland - DB and all of that aswell , even though they arent as productive as OBB apparently...i heard too -(inside infomation)
Good luck in the future with OBB
Travelled recently with these in 2nd class on the nearly 7h journey from Bologna to Munich. While the seats were rather hard, the padding was enough and the recline also decent enough to make the journey quite comfortable. What I liked the most was the high level of privacy of the seats and the large tables. The ambience was rather nice too, with nice warm colours throughout. I have not been on the older Railjets, but I honestly don't mind these at all. Gendered toilets are a rather weird choice and I wished the headrest and seat was not too hard, but bearable enough even for a longer journey.
If you'd tried the old ones, you see their endlessly better trains, all around
Gendered Toilets make sense if you mount a urinal in the men's room. Otherwise it is really whithout any use.
Ah, it makes sense then. You had no term of comparison
In my opinion the 2nd class seats in the old railjets are some of the worst seats out there.
Most people, especially those with prams or reduced mobility agree with me, unfortunately
Of course the real solution is high platforms but for some reason only Asia sees that
This still wouldn't work for most of Europe, especially not Austria and Italy, which use 550mm platforms.
if you think this is bad get ready for the 3rd generation which will be the Stadler KISS, btw with no cafeteria only machines, in theory because it will be used in shorter routes with high demand. at the end of the day in the new open market paradign operators must compete and if westbahn is able to lower prices by adding density obb must to, because at the end of the day regardless of what they say people only want cheap travel. it is like with airplanes where everyon is indignant about ryanair yet theyre still number one in passangers
Oh I'm not ready for that 😂
Ich fliege grundsätzlich nicht mit Ryanair ,allein schon wegen der unmöglichen Arbeitsbedingungen !!
you miss the part where they are not going to operate on the longer distance trains but more on the Line Wien - Salzburg on the slower service where people for relations like Wien - Linz or Wien - Salzburg would rather take the faster RJX service anyways.
Fair comments, but the old one is still better 😉
I agree with you. However, your point about the consequences of the 1095-Euros-a-year Klima Ticket is by far=and-away the most important.
Good points well made 🙏🏻
The platform heights are just too low in Austria, Germany and Italy etc. Very poor historical decision-making.
I absolutely agree with you and you will like new ČD Comfortjet, it will be an upgrade of 1. gen Railjet. I'm really looking forward to it
I can't wait to try it 😀
I recently took an older Railjet business class from Vienna to Budapest.
You are talking about the "old" RJ business class experience....
@@Hadubrand1965 That’s why I mentioned it was the older Railjet business class.
I like the single seats in open compartments in old Business Class. New seats "look" stiff and uncomfortable.
I agree, the old business class is excellent! Yeah I don't know what they were thinking tbh Sam 🤔
I guess most of it is subjective 😉
Well I had ppl standing in my face in the old Business Class carriage after another train was cancelled, presumably I would have avoided this on the new Railjet
I guess so 😂
Idk if its better to have a higher floor with the door steps or having low floor entrance with many inernal steps
I think what they had before worked just fine!
@@SilentdragonDe There is no minibar service because of the internal steps compared to the old RJ.
Person who cannot do steps: "How do I get to the vending machines now?"
OBB: "Simply ask your travel companion to get something for you."
"No Wolfgang. Me being unable to do steps does not mean I travel with someone, or that I want people to do things for me."
Exactly my point 👍🏻
well in the past with the old railjets if you could not do steps you required assistance either way.
I quite liked them tbh 😀
departing station may indeed be not as aesthetically pleasing but i would commend one aspect of it upon entry: the abundabce of natural light flooding the interior! but would also have to agree with you on the less desirable elements of this new train set, particularly the less accessible layout, claustrophobic seating and the time-warp induced gendered loos (what year are we??) look forward to your ICE marathon ; )
I prefer the old EC trains 😂
The rail jet had a glow down
😆😆😆
I think that the new Nightjet sets were the main focus of the new design
Exactly, and unfortunately it's failed with the RJs
Maybe they can convert all of these coaches into night jets lol
Sounds like a good idea. Given the enormous pressures on capacity caused by the 1095 Euros a year Klima Ticket Austria desperately needs for its daytime longer distance trains double-deck trains with WIDE level boarding doors to ensure that stop dwell times are not excessive.
Or trash. And order proper ones.
If you watched the video, you'd have seen that I mentioned that near the start.
@@NonstopEurotrip oh sorry 😅
The new ÖBB business class is actually even worse. The foldable tables in bussiness class are so wobbly that it's pretty much impossible to work on them with a laptop.
Yep!! Better off at a first class table seat
Seems strange
I remember when I when I travel with the same locomotive on the route ec 83 from Munich hbf to Verona and passed from all the stations that you include in this amazing video. Great job! 👍
That's cool!
The most beautiful city in Austria no doubt, and I really like the train station it's small and you have all you need
How did you like the fact that once you pass the border to Germany the carriages do not have floor level access? I noticed that at a new train arriving in Munich main station. Billions in Euros for new trains in Germany and Austria but no aligned height of the platforms.
They do...?
Being an Australian, when I travel to Europe I have a larger (heavy) suitcase, as we normally holiday for 2 to 4 weeks at a time. I hate the entry of trains up many steep steps. So I much prefer the level boarding. Steps inside are easier when you don’t have a suitcase. Also I love looking at the outside views, and think the headrest sides on the seat would obstruct that view?
Fair point. And her the headrest is intrusive
Probably one of the best rains in europe lots of love and support from India Safe travel
The old one was 😂
The internal steps are necessary to provide step free entrance. For most of the other points I am with you. But some of them - like the toilets - can be changes easily.
Stadler Girunos dont have any
Best review about the new railjet.
Thank you! 🙏🏻
Thank you, a very good description of the train and also the stations and the route. The description of the RJ is very convincing.
Thank you very much!
I always loved travelling on the Railjet trains compared to my home in the UK,I hope they are not letting their standards drop which your video seems to show.Hope someone is listening.❤
I hope so too but idk what they could do tbh
I can't wait for the new Stadler railstock in the next years. Will the new regional double decker rex trains also arrive in 2026?
I guess their 2026 multi-stop new RJ also features 230km/h or 200 at minimum?
They're 200
Maybe for boarding but then absolutely terrible when onboard
I prefer the new seats! These provide more privacy and are equally comfortable. Do prefer the old Business configuration though, however I am surprised about all the negative comments about the new style. I always seem to be the only pax in that category anyway and kept wondering when OEBB will give up this seemingly “unwanted” product. Ultimately, the decision will be a commercia, rather than an emotional one! Great work OEBB! One Love
It's 50/50 which design people prefer.
I agree on every point you made! Well done sir!
Thank you kindly!
I just found them less padded and more claustrophobic with the encased headrests
„Senk ju vor träwelling vis OEBB“😂
I agree the new business class don t have individual seats!!!etc nice video btw 😁
Thanks very much 👍🏻
If I were part of Obb I would make it easy for passengers to give their complaints and order changes to the new trains design
Absolutely!
I work with them and it's a crazy ride always with too much technology that's not working as wished. The Night train is another issue too... I got accidentally burned by hot water 85 degrees hot!!! Crazy 😢
😢😢😢
Nice! I l personally loved the old model!
Me too, could you tell? 😂
@@NonstopEurotrip Ya 😂
Hello Nonstop Eurotrip
You video was very good.
I have to say the new possibility with low floor and then the small stairs up ( you can us the help groove)
is better than 1 Meter in a door up.
You need stairs otherwise how should it work🤷🏽♂️
The low floor is now better for older people or disabled persons
The Problems I ( or should I say WE understand, too)
No Garbage box is bad
The Business Class is on the train not worth.
We as related to the ÖBB we also didn't like it.
What should I we can't change These 2 things now, but we are not alone.
Other ÖBB staff complaint, too.
Thanks for your comments 🙏🏻😊
About the business class, I get overstimulated quickly for me these compartments are a lifesaver
How did you find it?
Fingers crossed! 🤞🏻🍀
My country to make trains more accessible decided to raise up all platforms so now there's no steps except of few stations where there's ramps to enter the train. I'm kinda curious why Europe decided to lower down the trains floor instead.
Because there's like 20,000 stations
For me, this New RJ is a kind of "failed construction"! F.e. the "dining car" is again a downgrade, and the "Business Class" is just a joke!
Exactly this ☝🏻
With a First Class Eurail pass, I remember I can travel in Railjet's Business Class free of charge on sections outside Austria, I took advantage of this perk when I last visited Germany and old Railjet's BC was so good! Quite, private and comfortable. Sad to see it go. With the new RJ's BC I wouldn't bother to walk down to BC even if there's no additional charges.
Very true
While Business class certainly is a disaster, I like the new First class seats more that the old ones - the old ones, although wide, are quite hard, and I therefore don't find them comfortable
So, the 2 main questions I'm left with after watching this very good review:
The RailJet 1 trainsets will definitely not be replaced ;-)
Furthermore the RailJet1 transits will be even modernized in the near future.
Currently the ÖBB has way to less high speed coaches so replacing ones from the 2000-2010s would be stupid if their are even ones from the 80s with no air conditioning in service (Vienna to Villach)
The eight RailJet 2 trainsets which are from the first series travel ONLY on the route Munich Verona.
All other RailJet Services will be still hauled by first generation.
In the future their are 19 more RailJet 2 trainsets and even 14 new double decker trainsets ;-)
The 19 more RailJet 2 will travel on the new Koralmbahn from Villach - Klagenfurt - Graz to Vienna.
Great points, well made 🙏🏻
A compartment (as long as you have it to yourself) is great for quietness and privacy, but I'm not sure whether that's worth €15 extra. That awkward arrangement with the internal steps is rather like the ICNG in the Netherlands which reviewers seem to rave about, only there you also have the additional fun of lots of internal doors to fight your way through as well
Well, obviously. I had the whole coach to myself anyway 😂
danke für deine tollen videos! du bist der erste video creator bei dem ich mitglied bin 👍
Welcome onboard 🤗❤️
A suggestion for you - I was at Bratislava Hlavna Stanica a few days ago and I noticed a railjet train heading for Zurich along side our train. That looks like an interesting Journey! Great video by the way.
Yes! If I do it I'll probably do the full Zurich to Budapest trip 🙂
@@NonstopEurotrip The one I mentioned appears to be Bratislava, Vienna, Zurich
Innsbruck Hbf doesn't just have a lounge (restricted access) but also a decent waiting room (with comfortable seating and electric plugs) as I didn't find it in any other ÖBB station where you usually just have some seats in the middle of the hall with much more disturbances.
As for the new railjet, I still have to try it. It's not operating on my main routes (which would be Wien to Graz/Villach/Venezia).
Interesting!
The trick to the new business class is to buying all four seats. I went from Vienna to Munich for just 260 euros having the compartment for myself
@@brentschmogbert funny, these trains don't run on that route.
I agree!
I never said it wasn't
I agree with you on several points, but as an Austrian, I do still prefer the new Railjet over the old. I love the brighter, warmer atmosphere and the new privacy features. Business class is an obvious let-down, but I much prefer the first class on the new Railjet to the old one! I also hate the gendered toilets - but at least that's only rather minor (unless you're non-binary I suppose).
Fair points
Great trip. I must say bring back Old Business Class Seat. And that plenty steps.
Oh yes! 😊
Aus meiner Sicht, ist der SMILE von Stadler, aktuell der beste EC Zug in Europa!
I agree!!
I came to Innsbruck one day using the Nightjet service from Graz to Zürich! I arrived very early at the station and took a nap because I was in a full sitting compartment, so I hadn't slept much... I feel a bit frustrated that I couldn't see the incredible views from the train as it was still dark
You'll have to come back 😜
The internal steps are ridiculous, even here in the US that would never be permitted on a new train for accessibility reasons. This was a deliberate choice by OBB, we use a variant of these cars in the US as the new Amtrak Venture cars and Brightline cars and they have no internal steps and full level boarding at stations with 51 inch platforms, or a wheelchair lift for stations with low platforms.
Exactly this ☝🏻
Business class can be described as a bad joke. The seats in first class are average, and in second class they are a total mess. The first generation railjet is much better
I was in Innsbruck 14 or 15 years ago and wow. I don't remember that much of the main station
Αυτο τον καιρο ακουω 2 τραγουδια. Αυτο και Shokin - Να Σε Δω 😍
One Love
Strange. Very much against what everyone else thinks
I've been to Taiwan 😉
Having travelled on the old Railjet, I agree these look like a step backwards.
Exactly this ☝🏻
The ÖBB used the replace old stuff with new worse stuff a lot. Just look at the Wiener Schnellbahn... every day at least 5 broken doors in the new trains. They are just unreliable as hell and have less standing capacity as well as beeing horribly ventilated because of the AC.
still way better than in the UK
Amen 🙌🏻😂
ÖBB
had initially ordered eight trains, but has now ordered an additional 19, for a total of 27 Next Generation Railjets without bringing in my opinion any real improvement in comfort, especially in business class for equipment that has been planned for the future Brenner tunnel of nearly 60 km...
Exactly, idk they've actually gone backwards in a lot of ways!
I completely agree ! The original RailJets are wonderful, but these new sets are very poor in comparison. OBB needs to revise them very soon !
I doubt they will Anthony!
Are the headrests as bad as they look? It looks like you need to lean forward to look out of the window
They really are!
Fun Fact: this was planned to be marketed as an InterCity initially. With 200 km/h maximum. Maybe that would have made more sense considering them not committing to a real business class here.
Never heard that before
Unlike the other reviewers you made a honest report: the train is actually a downgrade from previous version and it's starting to look like a regional train (just like the new double-decker Intercity in Germany).
100 per cent agree 💯👍🏻
The most comfortable train seats I've ever experienced were the old bench style seats, so if they are anywhere near that good I don't mind it. I have my doubts though, sadly.
Travelling Business class in October. Vienna to Zurich hopefully old railjet. Good video
You will!
Hello nice video!!! I agree with the business class it's very down , but for the step inside, in France its the same issue with ours double deck trains, plateform is full accessible but some steps for the rooms ,
Thanks for sharing!
🎤Oh, Babyyy 🎶🎶
it does seem odd that if accessibility was the end goal....why the stairs ???? and the seats look kinda thin and firm...otherwise it seems on the surface... minor quibbles...and i question your assessment about the paper trash bags being environmentally unfriendly ....as the bins often are lined with plastic bags...
The old bins weren't lined at all and why didn't they just make thing better?
Absolutely agree!!! 💯
Steps inside are a no-go.
Exactly 💯
Yes I love this idea why haven't we in Denmark take note this goes for Germany too very nice for kids and they are distracted for a few minutes
I can't wait to see for myself
Go for it 😀
Like what I've seen on some other train channels, it's quite a disappointment. But when you come think that it is currently a replacement of the old EC trains serving Northern Italy to Bavaria via Innsbruck, then it is an upgrade. And I agree, the €15 business class addition should be avoided
I prefer the old trains tbh, much better dining car and better seats imo 😁
@@NonstopEurotripWell the old EuroCity trains on the Brennerbahn don't have a Restaurant car anymore because during COVID they weren't allowed to operate them in Italy. So ÖBB just not used them and let them sit on a track for 2 years and then were surprised that they are not working perfect anymore...
@@Franjo5000 I knew it would be Italy's fault 😆
@@NonstopEurotrip Only that they weren't there during the Covid years. Other then that clearly ÖBBs fault.
Sorry, I've missed the Amex card number on the front side... and can you show us the design of the rear side as well? 😁💸 Great videos by the way.. See you in CZ soon... the new ČD ComfortJet are officially running from This week...
😅😅😅
Pierce Brosnan (SPAR premium) would say: _There's only one, the original!_
Well, we're not getting this layout in the US because there's no way in heck it's ADA compatible. Can't say I'm that upset.
Exactly...
@@NonstopEurotrip Here's hoping Stadler gets jealous of the Venture horde being rolled out and offers a competitive US coach.
8:48 gotta flex the amex platinum lol
🙈🙈🙈
It might be me but I cannot see the link to the menu in the description ! Good video as always though.
All the best.
Updated 🙂
Fair points 😂
Back in the day compartments were standard!!!!
Your point?
Should consider a Tren Maya or Trans-Isthmus Train from Mexico video in the future.
Coming soon 👀
The seat backs remind me rather of Corail coaches in France
Not me 😂

Am I missing something? Passengers get a table if they can transfer to a seat, but they don't have a table if they remain in their wheelchair? I see only one table here.
Indeed, yes 😢
I hate how the new trains have steps inside it’s a real step back in terms of accessibility.
Absolutely 💯
The paper bag bins are actually the result of careful environmental considerations. Would you prefer more plastic?
No, I'd prefer proper bins.
Thanks!
No problem! Thanks very much for the tip Lois 😁
