    Yesss, I have an incredibly nit-picky gripe about the Kindle app vs Apple Books and I can finally vent - I like the page curl effect on both apps when turning pages, but when reading in landscape on the Kindle app the book “spine” is still at the side, so when you turn a page it’s like you’re reading a book shaped like a letterbox with two columns per page, whereas on Apple Books the spine is in the middle so it actually turns like a proper book. It’s that sort of attention to detail that sets Apple apart.

    • @WilliamGallagher
      @WilliamGallagher  6 месяцев назад +1

      I shouldn't say that made me laugh, but it did. I love that you got to vent and while I realise I must never have read a Kindle book landscape, I feel your pain.

    I have a huge catalong of Kindle books, so I have the Kindle app on iPhone/iPad/Mac. But I also have books on Apple Books. For what I read, I find that the prices between the two are generally the same in the US. IMHO, reading manga or art books is much more pleasant with Apple Books, however so, for new purchases, I generally use Apple Books if the book is available.

    • @WilliamGallagher
      @WilliamGallagher  6 месяцев назад +3

      I hadn't considered art books, that's such a good point. I've found Kindle will re-flow images as you read, so if you turn back a page and then read forward again, the image is in a slightly different place. Very distracting.

    My iPad mini is my preferred reader because I prefer backlit screens. I bought a Paperwhite but ended up giving it away. Just don't like the experience. I have the Kindle app on my Mini and often forget which one has the book I want. I also have a large collection of PDFs Epubs etc for a scholarly project that Apple Books presents well. I like having all of it on one device. I still like Kindle because when I come across a book relevant to my studies I can be reading in a couple of minutes right in the context that originally drew me to it. It's awful to get a book in the mail a month later and realise you have mostly lost the reason for buying it!

      What a world we've become: I entirely agree about not wanting to wait for a book. It used to be exciting when they'd arrive, now it's oh, right, yeah, that old thing. I forgot about the iPad mini: that is a gorgeous device.

    My wife and I each have a Nook reader, and we love them, and I have a Kindle reader, which I also enjoy. We own books on both types of readers, but most of our ebooks are on the Nook. I really like reading on my iPad, too, whether it be Kindle or Nook books.
    I only have a few books in my Apple books app, but yes, it's a great reading experience. I also found the Apple Books app to be a wonderful tool in pre-reading my novelette after I formatted it for submission to KPD, recently. Exporting the formatted MS Word version as a PDF and then importing it into Apple Books gave me the chance to see the book as it might appear once published. This was especially true of the paperback version.
    I managed to get my novelette published on KDP with little trouble. Later, I tried submitting it as an Apple book, but that did not go smoothly. Apparently, I need an employee identification number, and it looked like there were some hoops to jump through for that, so I decided to put it off for a bit and try later, when I have more time.
    I would love to see an episode of 58keys on the topic of publishing to Apple Books versus to Kindle Direct Publishing. Which do you prefer? And why? Any tips on making the submission process to Apple Books easier? I found it pretty tricky.
    Great video. I enjoyed it, thoroughly, and my wife said that it is one of her favorites of yours. We love your relaxed comfortable delivery. We both feel like we know you.
    Take care. Oh, and we have one of Ted Chiang's books, after hearing you recommend it. (Or did I see it listed in the credits for Arrival. Not sure.) Now we'll need to get the other one (Exhalation).

      You do know me! I felt like you two were with me when I went around a newspaper museum in Tokyo and fair cooed at the hot metal cases. As for Apple Books, I'm finding at the moment that all of Apple's back-end services are wildly clunky. It's like they're using Macs from the 1990s to power them. In my case it's that I'm having to deal with their podcasts service, but I do remember thinking it's a good thing Pages can publish to Apple Books because that cuts out at least a step or two.

    I prefer the iPad layout. I have a Kindle, which I don’t use. I read a lot of biography / autobiography. The downside of a Kindle (paper white or otherwise) is it doesn’t really do photos or illustrations. I also have several autobiographies that are only available on the iPad - not even in paperback - as the book also has extensive embedded links to further photos and a substantial amount of video.

      No, you're right there: images on Kindle aren't great. I presume they're better in colour on a Kindle Fire but they look old-newspaper-style to me. Any recommendations for biographies to read?

  • @johnstjohn4705

    I've had a lot of iPads and Kindles. I got a Kindle Scribe. Its only drawback for me is that it's a little too big and heavy. I'm an Apple fanboy, but I prefer Kindle Books because they have the largest library. Kindles have a good range of options when it comes to fonts and layouts. (line spacing, margins, etc.), so I have no complaints about how their screens look compared to iPads other than iPads being sharper. That can be solved by using the best Kindle, a Fire tablet. My Fire 10 2023 is as bright and sharp as my iPad mini. And Fire tablets are cheap--$100 range versus $300-400 range for iPads.

    • @WilliamGallagher
      @WilliamGallagher  6 месяцев назад

      I had the impression that the Kindle Fire had quite a muddy colour screen, at least compared to iPads, but you say I'm wrong? Excellent. I still wouldn't buy a Fire because even if the reading experience is better, I don't see it competing as a tablet for anything else.

    I prefer physical books, but use the KIndle for genre fiction. I've had my Kindle for over a decade. It now refuses to connect to the wifi and I will have to replace it, but I think that's reasonable quality. I also liked being able to install Calibre on my PC and transfer books from Project Gutenberg etc onto my Kindle. My I-pad was a gift the same year I got my Kindle, and it has long since been obsolete. I only use it to play music.

      I have no loyalty towards Amazon and in all honesty they push cheap products and their reviews are not worth reading. Now that is a genuine reason not to shop with Amazon. However, yours is a flawed logic!

    Don't forget Kobo! With their VIP program, you receive discounts on many titles and a rewards program. Kobo is always my first option and I move to the Zon only if Kobo or Apple don't have what I'm looking for. (P.S. - Don't even get me started on the ridiculous way traditional publishers price ebooks when they are significantly cheaper than paperbacks.)

    Must admit - I also read on the iPad with the Kindle app. Australia must have the same pricing structure as the US. Lots of books are cheaper through Amazon than Apple Books. I must analyse the differences between the software. Reference books are much better in Apple Books but for fiction books, I haven't noticed a difference (on the ipad).
    I agree with your comments about the Kindle device. My wife has the PaperWhite - great for reading in the bath or in sunlight (great for outdoors in the Australian sun). But the software for the Kindle! It's like something out of the 1980's. DOS or Windows 3.1! Terrible. Also the quality. She is looking for a replacement (battery is only lasting a couple of days) and was looking at the Oasis (for the page-turning button and the slightly bigger size). But none is available except the $560 version (4G WiFi or something - not quite sure). But she wanted one with more storage than 8GB. Whether they are bringing out a new model or going broke - not sure.

      Oh! I didn't think of non-fiction, that was daft of me. I loved Tina Fey's autobiography which I read on Apple Books but it was frustrating because she used a lot of footnotes and Apple Books just chucked them all at the end, one page per footnote, no linking back or forth. So you could tell some of them were very funny references but you couldn't remember what to. That rather put me off non-fiction ebooks, I must try some again.
      I'm entirely with you on the DOS-like Kindle software. I hadn't thought of that description, but I'm having it now. From all I can figure out, though, the 8GB version is more than enough unless your wife reads anime or Manga, or anything that's very heavily illustrated. Since your books stay on Amazon's servers until you want them, I've not looked at greater than 8GB.
      Mind you, when a book is on the server and not the device... I get that it takes a moment to download it once you've tapped to open a book, but with Kindle, it downloads the book and then you have to tap again to open. Why it doesn't just download and open is silly. And yes, so DOS-like.
