Makes me happy I’m still driving my 00’ with a 47. All these years heard negative press but I’ve got 198k on it, always have done my own maintenance, and never had any issues. Still runs solid! Though I would like to “build” it one day to shift and lock-up sooner. I’m glad I waited all these years to wait for the adaptation of the Aisen. Looking at a chassis cab this time around but I’ll never give up the 5.9 24v!
I put a 2 disc “street heavy tow” clutch in my manual 6 speed. It sucks. Royal pain in the ass in stop and go city traffic. Hard to get into 1st, noisy, rattles the trans shafts due to incorrect damping for the engine. I bought a real truck for heavy tow (Kenworth) with a Fuller trans when I want to shift gears. Smooth as butter. Looking to swap in a built 48RE auto into the little one ton.
The 48re and 68rfe appear to have the same bolt pattern for the bellhousing. I was wanting to go with a built 68rfe for my "devious" ethanol/pump gas billet 5.9L build for my OBS half ton Ford anyways. Video was very educational and helpful. Thanks, Tom!!
good video young man I learned a lot I've got a 2006 Dodge Ram Cummins truck with the 48 Transmission in it and everybody around here says their junk they're no good well I guess they're pretty good if they're putting them in Fords and Chevys and swapping them out into the 67 trucks and I know the weak Link in the Cummins trucks is the transmission but I think they get their bad rap is by people putting 10000 pounds behind them and putting Crazy Larry smoke show on them and flooring them and that's what tears I'm up
The dodge stock transmissions are fine for a stock truck, once you throw power at them they are done. The Ford and Chevy trans's can take a bit more power then stock. Also if you beat on even the best built trans like a teenager it won't last
Liked !! Excellent Job Explaining the various transmissions!! I have a cummins and don't race but I tow a lot! So you have given me a lot to consider!!
What about firepunk diesel I had them do my transmission and the thing is amazing 2 year warranty unlimited miles tuned perfectly $500 labor and very fast turn around
Couldn't agree any more with you turbatom! You've got some knowledge my friend. I'd love to meet up with you at an event.. I have a 2018 6.7 68rfe truck and now have a ats 800hp trans with suncoast billet shafts, truck is making 600hp. I am in allentown pa area, hopefully I can check you at Rudy's event
I special ordered a AISIN in my hotshot truck. I have a 36 foot dually tandem. Total gross 26,000 pounds. The AISIN IS A CLASS 5 OR CLASS 6 transmission. AISIN is a Toyota transmission that is use in 24 FOOT Box trucks. Stock dodge AISIN DUTY CYCLE is 900 foot pound of torque, ALL DAY 24/7.
I went with a Suncoast m3ga 68 and it is a very nice shifting trans. However it does make a slight squawk when up shifting from 3rd to 4th which is kind of annoying. I think a lot of making a 68 last and shift nice is up to the tuner that you have tune the truck. All and all I am very happy with the built trans from Suncoast!
Wish I could drive a built 48re. I rebuilt mine myself, just clutches bands and seals. It's strong but shifts kinda slow, I grossed 38k with it and it holds, just doesn't shift like I wish it would.
Didn't realize that you are in Rising Sun. Your not too far from me at all. My "Guess" is that you are using Anthony's Transmission's to do your work. Great video man!
excellent video, thank you. you may have mentioned it in the past and I missed it but what is your goal for the truck. do you have a power number in mind or a quarter mile time your shooting for?
tom, i have been watching a few videos on this swap. firepunk's 48 swap video shows grinding down the raised boss on the end of the crankshaft for the flexplate to fit, they also show cutting down the input shaft on the transfer case. Is this something all 48 swapped trucks will need to do? the swap doesn't seem as "bolt on" as many people advertise it to be.
I have a 99 ram with 47re in it. If and when it has issues, should I switch to the 48? Besides the getting the trans, what else needs to be adjusted for it to work? Computer, drive shaft length, ect...
@@TurbaTom Thank you so much! It's always difficult to get honest answers from places that are trying to sell you something so I never go to a gun fight without at least 1 bullet.
Clutch packs are better then bands, it will just take time for the aftermarket industry to catch up like normal... no heavy equipment auto uses bands, of course the old trans will be cheaper to do.... if you want a real cheap trans to do as a swap is a built turbo 400 for racing.
@@TurbaTom ok i was told different but i'm new to this 48re/68rfe. They make an allison that bolts up to the 6.7 now so i think that route for the money would be my choice.
Quick question . The band adjustments one outside one inside. I've watched the adjustment videos. Can you tell me which adjustment affects which gears. Like the outside adjustment affects?? And tge internal adjustment effects?
Great Video again! nice info but i have one correction to what you said. the overdrive clutches are in the drum located behind the pump in the front of the trans. also did your low reverse sprag on the 68rfe not have a plastic retainer with springs? I've rebuilt my 68rfe with the best everything including a revmax valvebody and torque converter and love it! I have a ton of pictures of the rebuild, if you would like to see anything let me know and ill send you my contact info. Also if you need a trans built and want help, let me know! Be more than happy to help you out
I'm in the beginning stages of deciding what trans to put in my 2014 and it seems that it's $8-$10+ grand either way I go. Aside from a RevMax 68RFE 750 or a RevMax 48RFE (1500 hp capable) what do you think of an Allison 1000 swap? RevMax's fully built Allison 1000 is also rated at 1500 hp and it seems to be about the same if not a little less than either of the aforementioned, including additional wiring harnesses and adapter plate, etc. Also, what about the transfer case? What options are there for us?
Great in depth video man! I just picked up an 07 5.9 MC with the 48RE and only 62K miles. Sometimes under super light acceleration in 1st (around 5-10 mph and normally when on any kind of uphill) I get a bit of lurch, like its wanting to shift into 2nd. It's not going fast enough to need to shift and when I give it a bit more throttle it smooths right out and shifts fine. Any ideas? I'm just west of you in Baltimore, new to the area and will take any suggestions recommendations on performance shops around here.
The governor pressure solenoid and pressure sensors may be the cause of this, but mind you I am no expert. Muldoon's in DE, I've heard nothing but good things about and will probably take mine to next time I have an issue.
I have an 05 with a billet TC and a Trans-Go shift kit. It does the same thing. Makes around-town driving a high-stress proposition cause I'm worried that something is wrong. I've been told that it's normal by Suncoast (These guys will have a tech call you back if you call them, unbelievable support, and I don't even have any Suncoast parts), but I still wonder. I've replaced the Governor pressure solenoid and the transducer 3 times because of shuttle-shift and fried solenoid or transducer. Used the upgraded Borg-Warner solenoid. No difference. Last go-round I used the even bigger, heavier-duty Borg-Warner from a GM application with an adapter kit. It makes the Solenoid mount horizontally instead of vertically. Hopefully this will keep my transmission from frying the solenoids/transducers. But it did NOT fix the lurch you describing. I believe the trans is trying to shift into 3rd too soon. My truck does it from 10-25 mph. I wish there was a way to adjust that shift point, but haven't found one that isn't expensive. I even tried a BD pressure controller, which gives the trans more pressure than stock under most conditions. Didn't help. Possibly because my shift-kit already increases the pressure. Anyway, I'm still looking for the fix, or shift-point adjustment.
Now that I have seen a 68 out the truck I see where the issue is. If you drive hard you need know the weaknesses of your vehicle. Never let any trans shudder or slip, life is lost each time you feel it. This guy here has a ton of dyno pulls posted on his channel of various builds. He builds 48re's and tunes cummins as his main specialty. ruclips.net/channel/UC3o64GuAIYSNUapF-IOBqDw ATS, FirePunk, and Power Driven Diesel are all known for making great out of the box trans built to hold power. Prices start at 4k and go up. Considering the parts list you are getting what you pay for. About a $1000 mark up for the build seems fair considering all 3 of these guys are very experienced builders. I hope you find these ideas useful.
I got a brand new revmax 850... I think I should have went with a 48 swap... I just don't like the way the 68 feels... but now it looks like I'm stuck with it :( don't have the money to drop another 10k+ on a swap.
When you say 850 hp, do you mean at the rear wheels or just estimated hp at the engine only? That may be a stupid question, but I truly am asking because I don't know. I know some power is lost from the engine to the wheels along the drive line. I really love your videos & channel. Great info. I have a 2016 ram 2500 with the Cummins. I would also like to know if I install lower gearing in the axles, does that add stress to other driveline components like the transmission or transfer case? I just wonder because the gearing that is multiplying my engine's power is at the end of the power delivery to the ground. I can see how a massively powerful engine can damage any weak links behind the power source or maybe even a 4:1 low range could damage components down the line from it. I hope this makes sense. I would really love any information, you could give me regarding all this.
To the wheels is how most of the aftermarket transmissions are rated. Installing a lower gear set in my opinion would reduce stress. Many trans companies prefer a change when large tires are ran on a truck
Turba Tom so if I have no real plans beyond a better air intake system & some form of a better performing exhaust & maybe a mild chip my 68rfe should serve me just fine. Right? Thank you for all the info & the help.
Hey Tom, planning on doing mild tunes, more then likely swap the 2nd gen and throw twin compound set up in my work truck. What is the best transmission in your opinion for that type of a set up? should i bother touching my factory 68rfe, will the factory 68 be able to keep up with any sort of tuning? and so on.
It all depends on how it's driven, get in contact with your tuner about the trans tuning and hp goals. If they are reputable they should have way more knowledge then me
Im doing a 5.9 swap into a e450 box van from a 6.0. I bought a 2002 5.9 that had an auto trans behind it. wondering what my best dodge auto trans option would be?
don't be afraid of the six speed .but remember I work at Aisin and if you get that bad boy it's ...... 64 percent stronger ....... than any trans out there including the Allison ......not kidding
Wildman are you suggesting the Nissan uses the same Aisin transmission as the Ram? The only thing the two transmissions have in common is the name Aisin. Since you’re on a roll bashing the Aisin, do a little research on it before you embarrass yourself. The Aisin in the Ram is made here in the USA 🇺🇸 by Americans. My 2018 3500 Ram is rated at 385 hp and 930 tq thanks to the optional Aisin.
Turba Tom I bet it has 3.42, most of them do, I hate that about mine, it is for better mpg, but I put a 2inch lift & tires that r around 33 inches tall if not a bit bigger (metric sizes, go figure) and 17x9 wheels, my truck can drive just fine with these gears but towing heavy, it feels too high of gearing for sure. I am going with 4.10s or lower n the future so I can run 35s, and still tow very easily.
What about that BD tranny on the floor next to the truck? I have their valvebody in my crewcab dually. 48re. Everybody's using the 48re thats why i cant find a spare! Lol!
All this talk about "stages" is simply marketing. If you compare components and design the Allison and Ford 5R110 trans are much better designed and built. Allison for example has the largest stock diameter input and output shafts. personally I prefer the 5R110 due to the engineering that went into it ( IT WAS NEVER A CAR TRANSMISSION like the 48re). The 48re in stock form is not designed for long term durability and was one of the transmissions that gained Dodge a reputation for having trans problems. ATS has a patented torque converter that is really hard to beat, should see the inside of that thing. ATS has a lot of engineering going in to their products.
The 727 based transmission has more room to add clutch material and hold more power...BUT... The 4 speed transmission... SUCKS... for a diesels power band ...lol.... I've driven both truck and for a non super hot rodded truck that's towing their toys the 68rfe is going to do better . 3+overdrive is pure shit gearing for a diesel .
You are talking only about racing situations bud. My full billet 68 on my built 6.7 returns with a very very low cruising rpm at 18.7 average mpg which the 47/48 just wont. If you want a true bullet proof swap for even money put a built Ford 4r100 from ATS in your truck. Dodge looked to Allison when they were developing the 6.7 and it robbed too much power from the motor. This guy doesn’t know what the F he is talking about past taking a over built truck to the strip and breaking it.
Problem is, all the hard parts in the world don't amount to much when the controls are stock. The "built" Aisin still isn't a viable option. And that clown with one on here is dumber than shit. He ain't no diesel god, I promise you that. He posted that "built" Aisin will hold 1600hp hahaha
Greg Gonz lol mine is tuned and deleted with a stock trans and I never see over 190. But then again I don't drive balls to the wall 24/7 like a lot of people do. Also I've seen a lot of people with a 4r100 swap which I've been told is better than the 48re, mainly because the 4r shifts faster and it doesn't have the huge gap between the 3rd-4th gear swap like the 48re does.
5r110 stays around 180 with 9000 lbs on the trailer and 447 rwhp empty trans temps were 165. this is in tx where its around 105 most of the time in the summer. just saying i like the dodge truck but i fear the transmission as much as a 6.0 needing studs. but then again like you i dont drive all crazy my truck was never studded and rolled tunes the entire time i had it. if you drive them with care will you still blow a trans running 450 hp?
When I blew my 68 in my 08 mega, I took a nv5600 out of a 01 cab and chassis truck. Loved it
We built mine ourself and put 4000 in parts on my 07 5.9 and I have no regrets...... completely diffrent truck now.

47 or 48re would be the easiest
Thanks!
You're going to spend over ten grands trade it out for a aisin or Allison.
68rfe made by mercedes? or just the gears?
don't be afraid of the six speed .but remember I work at Aisin and if you get that bad boy it's ......
Are you going to swap rear ends in this build? Are you running 3.42s I'm not sure what ratio your truck came with from the factory
Not at this point, I believe the truck has 3.73's. Though I haven't confirmed, guess we'll see what it does and go forward
Is ATS the new version of Aamco?
How long have you had the 48 in it?
Was in the grey truck then moved it to the white one, it's been in one of my 4th gens the last couple years
That's awesome I just got a new block and brand new everything so I did the 47 swap and pcs
Are you near Delaware? Muldoone's transmissions is the best I've seen in the US.
I am and I'm aware of his quality, when the trans next gets a refresh/upgrade I'm there.
What about that BD tranny on the floor next to the truck? I have their valvebody in my crewcab dually. 48re. Everybody's using the 48re thats why i cant find a spare! Lol!
Just a BD pan
Or an Aisin 👍
Restoration West if only they could tune them.. stock they can't hold much of a power bump
SRH!!! ♠️ 👊🏻
So the Allison takes more power from the Cummins then the Duramax? Interesting
No you gotta ASRC swap it
where is the neutral safety switch wire? ugghhh
Get a Allison 1000
48re
@ 27:18 thats what she said lol
Revmax has put out a built aisin trans for the cummins it's like 10k lol
Didn't know anyone had a built aisin out, I think all the modern transmissions are expensive as hell to have built!
Turba Tom type in 850 hp cummins and the guy has one on his truck
Problem is, all the hard parts in the world don't amount to much when the controls are stock. The "built" Aisin still isn't a viable option.
And that clown with one on here is dumber than shit. He ain't no diesel god, I promise you that. He posted that "built" Aisin will hold 1600hp hahaha
MoparProud yea sounded a little fishy I was just stating that there is a built Aison trans out there
The biggest problem that I know of with that trans is the lack of a tuning option
But I like driving a tractor
Very good video explaining difference I now know the true difference than you man
Dodge transmission is trash. They run hot as hell with mild tunes on them. Weak ass product
Maybe you should be going the cheap shit I k ow everything way
5r110 stays around 180 with 9000 lbs on the trailer and 447 rwhp empty trans temps were 165. this is in tx where its around 105 most of the time in the summer. just saying i like the dodge truck but i fear the transmission as much as a 6.0 needing studs. but then again like you i dont drive all crazy my truck was never studded and rolled tunes the entire time i had it. if you drive them with care will you still blow a trans running 450 hp?
yea Dodges just magically wins most automotive competitions... Apparently we do it without transmissions.
