Love the amazing simplicity to how Anna describes things: “just up yourself,” “I am sticky” “trust your feet.” Tell my why slab has finally clicked for me by these mantras lol
Your collab definitely worked well! The contrast between you and the teaching dynamic is actually helpful (in addition to being fun) - for me, who’s definitely at the Ryan end of slab prowess
I need an Anna Hazelnutt slab teacher in my life. I'm genuinely terrified of doing slab, and tend to gravitate towards overhang. My best friend prefers slab, and I would love to be able to share that enjoyment! :D
@ Yeah, that’s a really good way of putting it. You might feel strong after a moonboard session or something, but It’s a different kind of satisfying pulling off a really techy slab and feeling like a nimble mountain goat.
Understandable lesson on climbing slab, I love it! I watch loads of climbing vids but you've explained it Anna and having Ryan following you're instructions brings it home.
Ok actual comment this time because 🌟engagement🌟 Seriously, that yelp of surprise and pride when he stuck the purple campus move the first time, and then got to the top... that genuine smile and joy of doing a climb he thought was impossible 5 minutes earlier (why did you pick a V12 for my first...!) was absolutely amazing. It gave me dopamine by proxy. Serious vicarious happy hormones. You're an awesome coach! I think I'll be trying some slab today.
"And then I used a bit of flexibility..." 7:15 Anna, the splits queen Nice video and interesting comparison. I liked his comments when he feared the slab 😂
This was a really fun and instructive video! Great coaching, fun people to digitally hang out with and extra props to Colette and whoever did the editing (also Colette?) for putting in the extra work and making it so fun and clear!
This video hits me so close. Dad of 2 girls (who also like to paint my nails). Also avoid slab cos I'm worried about falling onto volumes and have no flexibility. Really enjoyed the presentation and tips throughout the video. You've gained a subscriber. 👍
Yay, I got so excited seeing this video in my feed! Love Ryan, love Anna, love slab! 😍 I'm still pretty much a newbie, but slab and anything tekky is definitely my jam, but I've been getting a bit chicken recently as my ability increases and the holds get smaller and fewer 😰. High foot swaps on dubious holds, and tipping/leaning to catch stuff that's hard to reach, are things I'm really struggling with at the moment (plus I've had an injured knee and overhangs have felt less scary, although that's on the mend now). So much good advice in this video. I feel you do the educational thing really well, Anna (as well as being super-fun and entertaining)! Need to remember: *I am sticky*. Funny that you and the Richardsons were both thinking along similar lines with your video scheduling today! 😄 But as far as I'm concerned, more slab = more good Awesome video! 🙌
Great video. In a way, gym climbing has undercut smearing as a footwork skill. When I began climbing, way back in 1985, the best shoes were Spanish Fires (Fee-rays). Their soles were soft and gummy. Edging with them was a lost cause. Instead you smeared with them. Real rock usually has more texture than gym walls, and you can often just find a subtle depression in rock, place the ball of your foot (or toe) in it and do a little left-right twitch with your heal to set the rubber. It is really hard to learn in gyms, as are hand and finger jamming. But smearing is essential for lower-angle face (slab) climbing.
Hey Ryan! Hey Anna, also, btw. Don't even know what the video is about. My guess is slabs. (I know, I am pretty smart.) But liking it already. Fave channel on the Tubes!
For an unknown but hard challenge, traverse Swan Slab in Yosemite L-R and then back starting at the 5.6 left of Penelope’s Problem to Lena’s Lieback and then back. I lived in Yosemite for a few years and this was my slab bouldering workout before bouldering.
So many tips! All the tips: 1.Thrust your feed, 2.soft shoes, 3.Center of mass for masculine build is shoulders, for feminine build = hips 4. lean to lift your legs higher 5. hold angles are beta clues 6. use volumes 7. be sticky 8./9 hype yourself up 10. try all te betas 11. believe 12. try to flash it. 13. technique over strength 14. control dynamic movements 16. remember to rest 17 persistene is key 18 do what works for your body
brushing the footholds/volumes helps too (or at least makes me trust my feet more) Soft shoe tip can be a bit misleading imo. It depends on what you’re trying to stand on. Big/slopy holds or volumes, definitely soft shoes. But the evolve shamans aren’t actually that soft, while Ryan’s veloces are extremely soft (but he’s probably heavier than her and maybe a slightly stiffer shoe would have helped on the green).
Loved the video. I feel much better about my own fear of slab after seeing him feeling the same way. Btw, are you still at Miguel's climbing gym in Vegas for this video? If so, I knew I recognized it. Now, I have to finally go watch his video with you. Later.
Always interesting to see people that never do slab, considering at least half of my sessions have a solid amount of slab and may be the style I like the most (though I've been doing a lot of overhangs to get fitter overall lately). How can you even get to 5.13 without picking an interest in slab? Not a dig, a genuine question. Maybe it's just the style here in France and I'm so used to it.
I mean, I definitely avoided overhanging for a long time!! Was climbing 5.13 without much practice in any cave or roof feature. For a lot of us, climbing is something we do for pure joy. For me, since I never really enjoyed that style, I often neglected it just cause it’s not as fun. Now that I’m trying to climb harder grades and have found slab to be limiting in that regard, so I’m branching out to other styles (and finding joy in that). But most people aren’t trying to climb professionally so it just doesn’t matter so much in the end. Just my two cents!
@@AnnaHazelnutt I wonder how you'd like Font (if you've never been!), especially the slabs there which are extremely punishing thanks to the polished sandstone and long history. Around where I live, the outdoor climbing is mostly slab or slab adjacent, so that also may be part of it. You can get to 7c without even touching an overhang, which I guess was my bias. :)
@ I’ve been! I loved it :) not much of a boulderer these days but definitely enjoyed myself. Even snuck a quick sesh on Duel and managed all the moves! Never went back to actually work and send but it’s still on my dream list for sure
Fair point. I actually climbed quite a bit of slab in my early days when I was climbing trad out west… but for the past seven years I’ve been at the Red River Gorge and you really have to go searching for slab here. And I haven’t really felt like searching ;-). Although, I had an absolute blast with Anna in this Session, so I have actually been working more of this kind of climbing into my gym routine lately!
Gotta love that Anna introduces Ryan as a climbing podcast host, dad, and sender of a longtime project at the RRG! Most don't know, but he was known as a Hollywood actor!!! Congrats on all the success Ryan and your career change!
I hated slab because I was bad at it, now after a lot of practice (and not being strong enough for overhang) I love it! Unfortunately now I hate overhang D:
As someone who is not that physically strong, slab is just the best. Like almost all boulder I did who are a grade above what I usually manage to do are slabs.
How i remember what "slab" is: Slab is where the wall will scrape off your skin like sand paper when you fall But i'm sticky, so no need to worry i guess
For climbing it’s a really effective way to present it because people don’t push their “area above the belly button” into the wall, rather they can pivot at their hips or lean with their chest. I know as a UK climber I don't suffer the same shipping costs as you do, but I will say that it's a bloody good product. Incredibly entertaining. Great coaching, great student bravery and progress!
Anna’s enthusiasm is infectious and so genuine!
Love the drawn marker graphics. Would recommend using a polarizer filter to remove reflection on the plexiglass
Seen lots of Anna - this tutorial style made me subscribe.
Never heard of Ryan before. He's awesome! Glad to see collabs between climbers :D
His podcast is great, check it out!
I only recently discovered Ryan's 'The Struggle' podcast but it's great! He's really fun and his interviews/chats are fab.

I looooved this video!! Your vid quality is just going up and up and up. Ryan was such a good guest, too 🤩
