I just saved a bunch of money by subscribing to Far Reach Engineering 👍🏼 lol Went from almost spending $90 on a headlight switch, to $30 on (2) bulb sockets, to $0 with a .23”x.23”x.006” shim. Awesome sauce!!
I wanted to say this happened to my Jeep 2000 Laredo brake light I followed your directions added the foil and BINGO it worked. Thank you for saving me money! God bless
I had changed my drivers side brake light a couple weeks ago and it worked fine. Pulled up to a friends house yesterday and he said the same light was out. Pulled it apart again and couldn't get it to work. Watched your video, cleaned the connections, slightly bent the connectors up (even used some tin foil under the connectors) and it now works great!! I was damn close to bringing it to the shop before I saw your video. THANK YOU and keep up the good.....videos!!
Perfect fix. Thanks, saved me some money. I was going to buy the entire light fixture for my '99 Grand Cherokee until I saw this. I popped those contacts out a little, cleaned them up and, like magic. Light again. Thanks again.
Worked a treat. Auto shop had diagnosed a bad circuit board so this saved me a bunch of money and hassle. No more being honked at for unannounced left turns. Thanks very much man!
Thank you so very much! I have had brake light issues for years. Tried replacing the bulbs last night and I didn't have the connections aligned properly and none of my lights worked today. After 30 minutes everything including brake lights were working. You're a lifesaver!! I have a 2002 Grand Cherokee Sport.
Just wanted to say thanks for the foil trick, it saved me alot of money. I thought that I had an electrical problem and had bought new bulbs, and housing unit. Did this last night and now my lights work perfect!
This absolutely works!! I tried everything recommended on other forums and blogs with no success. I just tried the foil trick and lights are working perfectly now! Cheers and thanks for the fix.
Thanks for showing this! My 2004 Grand Cherokee right brake light would not light if the tail lamp was on. As you said, the ground connection (the single contact) wasn't touching (I can see that the plastic is slightly melted around the contact on the tail lamp housing) so I bent it up a bit, and VOILA ("like that", for those of you that don't speak French) it works again! Thank you!
Thank You SOOO much, we have 2004 Grand Cherokee and we couldn't figure out why the brake light wouldn't work when the headlights were on. We watched your video, did what you did, and BINGO!!!
THANKS!! I changed the bulbs and fuse for the brake switch, then I looked up how to change the brake switch and that still wasn't it! I thought I'd look one more time online before I took it and BAM!! Your video was it! saved lots of money I'm sure. thanks again
my jeep was doing the same thing . after watching your video I fixed the problem . thought it was a relay problem or bad switch . would have wasted my money on new tail light or bulb socket .. thank you very much .. now I can spend my money on a new halo front headlight assembly .. great job !!
I was experiencing a similar issue. One side would go out when I pushed the breaks, I adjusted the prongs on the light assembly using your hack and also pushed down the connectors on the bulb housing it self. I see after the years the part that we push up with the foil gets recessed in the plastic. Probably due to heat of the bulbs. I told my wife what I was about to do after watching your video and she looked at me like I was crazy. She wouldn't even help. BTW she is a service manager at Firestone and they diagnosed the car with a short and that was their reason why the lights were all wacked out. Once again thanks 1999 jeep grand Cherokee limited
I was lifting those TAB up was about to put foil under it I just thought the housing was bad....but I just went back outside after this video BINGO that was the problem it kept pushing that TAB back down....IT WORK PROPERLY AGAIN. ...THKS. ..
I would like to let you know how thankful I am to see your video on this issue as I just had to fix this problem in addition to replacing several sockets. Anyway thank you very much, you helped me out in a huge way as I am now able to rent a trailer to go pickup my child from college at WSU. Keep up the great work in helping others, You are the MAN. You ROCK Big DOG!!!:););) Later Gator.
Thank you so much for putting this video on here! My Jeep Overland had the exact same problem on the drivers side. Replacing the socket and light didn't help. I followed your directions and my brake lights are working fine!
Thanks for your video man. I had the same problem on my Jeep Grand Cherokee 2003 I follow your instruction and fix the problem. Now my brake light it’s working great thanks again.
Thanks for a very specific how to vid. This was same issue I was having and my inspection sticker had expired for 4 months as I was trying to figure this out!!! I was afraid of a high repair bill if taken to shop. Thanks to you, my 1999 jeep wj is ready for inspection!!!!
Hi FRE searching failure with different swap ...find your Vdeo this morning same failure and same repair applied . THANKS and best Regards from another Grand Cherokee Jeeper over the Seas ;-)
Thank you so much for sharing this video. Did exactly what you demonstrated and was able to get my lights fixed. Saved me time and money. Again, thanks.
Its worth the time to put the tinfoil under the tabs. I put it under every light, on both sides. Awesome fix!! That would have drove me crazy tracking down the problem.
Hell Yeah. Symptom: Neither brake lights or tail lights worked on the right side of my jeep. This Video worked like a freaking charm! 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Had to put two aluminum foil shims in. On the single contact, and on the right side of the double contact. Tail lights worked. Brake lights worked. Effing Ay!!
Did it. Success. Along with new break switch. My JEEP lit up like never before. A Christmas Tree of bright brake lights etc. Thanks a million!! David II
I have a WJ and my mother has one also and we both had the same problem with our brake lights and I have seen plenty others with the same problem I actually took mine to a shop to be fixed one time it only works for a couple of month I wish I would have had a easy fix it like this
Thanks for the Pure Michigan greeting!! Me, I'm LP, but the UP has some amazing wheeling. One favorite spot in Michigan for the Jeep is in the UP on Drummond Island. The fun is increased by the fact that you can only access the Island and trails by putting your Jeep on a ferry. Then you just run the snowmobile trails, eh. :)
Fucking I can't believe it worked!!! 3 years and hundred of dollars. Thanks so much for posting this video. Tin foil!!! Thank you!!! From Las Vegas Mike
I think this might be my buddy's problem. The brake lights will work but then if you turn the headlights on the left brake light doesn't work and then if you turn the brights on the right taillight doesn't work. His is a 2001 aswell.
Yes, It likely is the case. As always try a new bulb and see if you get the same symptom to occur. If it does, it is totally the connector. I had the same with my jeep and the tin foil fixed that oddity as well. Good luck!
Thank you for this! My wife has been commuting in LA without any brake/running lights for weeks now. I got the running lights to work with this trick and then wiggled the brake switch relay and got the right brake light to work. I'm guessing to get the left to work I need to replace the relay?
Excellent to hear that things are improving for your Jeep. Based upon your description if you have one brake light working and the other is not, then it is unlikely the relay is the issue. The relay would affect both brake lights at the same time. More likely it is the light bulb itself. Or possibly the housing. If you have not yet replaced the non-working brake light with a new bulb (or swapped the bulb from the working side for a test) I would suggest trying a new bulb first, then moving from there. Best of luck.
Awesome. Thank you. Worked great for my passenger side, unfortunately, my driver's side must be another issue. Tried this and a new board but it isn't working yet. I will get it and post here.
Had done this years ago, ordered new housings eventually, but needed this tutorial when the new housings had the exact same problem as the original jeep units. Worked again... Any idea if LED bulbs might keep things cooler and less likely to distort the plastic under the tabs? Thanks!
Nice Twice! Also I haven't personally tried LED's in the Jeep housing, but for similar light output (lumens), yes I would totally expect them to run cooler.
Hi, just a quick question. Is the blinker socket the same as the brake socket? the thing is my blinker socket is the same as the brake socket but it doesnt really seem to go there. In fact, I think its pointing the same way as the rest of the sockets and yours is pointing the opposite of the rest.
???? that's the piece that holds the tail light to the body besides the connecting metal pushin pin. Did you color red on your casing? Why for? Thanks, im trying this now. Same thing is happening to mine.
Hi, I just tried this with my right turn signal because it was blinking too fast. it was not making a connection, usually it would work just to take a screwdriver and bend up the little metal connection tabs where the bulb screws in to the socket, but for some reason this stopped working so i tried your tin foil method and it made the connection. my right turn signal now works perfect. thanks. i read somewhere that these 1999-2004 wj's have this problem with there lights because the cheap plastic light housing shrink from the heat from the bulbs over time causing them to pull away from the little metal connection tabs and breaking the connection, hence the need to use the screwdriver to pull the little metal tabs up to fix the connection. thanks again
before we did this our tail light worked and the brake lights didnt. after we did the tin foil trick the brake lights work but the tail lights don't. when we attached the foil it was only on one connector. should we do it on all of them? or is that a whole new issue?
Have a question about raising the single connector in the light assembly, how were you able to do that? In the video you did it away from the camera .... My connector is flush with the plastic and I cannot get anything under it to lift it up. I tried prying the plastic and all with a screwdriver and then used the tin foil I was going to put under it and rubbed it across the connector to clean it. It seems to work, but not sure for how long. Great video and thank you for sharing it.
+Sandra Dornick Sandra, I just used a very small/thin screwdriver to pry the tab up just enough to slide the foil beneath it. Not a lot of course or it could snap the tab. Just just enough to get the foil beneath. Having the foil beneath as a spacer helps insure that over time, the tab cannot compress back down into the flush area. Here is my other video with a close of up of the tab. It doesn't show me pry it up, but it does show how little it needs to be raised to get good contact. That said, it sounds as though you have it fixed! ruclips.net/video/lSrWZn9wVfg/видео.html
Mega, so no brake lights even with the whole new housing? Did the new housing also include new bulb carriers? I would expect so. If that is the case, there must be something electrical up stream that is giving you issue. Is it just one side that is giving you trouble? or are both brake lights left and right out?
Far Reach Engineering Hi there Actually what happened is I blew the fuse to the brake light switch as well. Didnt know there was one. On top of that 1 of the screw in bulb housings was bad. The contact pins in it were out of whack and night aligned, and one of the bulbs even though it looked fine with no broken filaments, was no good. I replaced it with my backup light bulb and the brake light worked after. When I put the old brake bulb in the reverse light housing it didn't work. The bulb looked new and the filament was not loose or broken but would not work no matter what I did. Strange. Thanks for the kind reply. All seems good now and I am returning the whole tail light assembly as the culprit seemed to be the screw in bulb housing, fuse, and bulb combination.
What is that metal part called ... the one where the tail light sits on ... I probably sound dumb but I have been trying to figure out what it’s called...
Cynthia, there are a lot of things I could suppose you are referring to by that description, but I think you are talking about the ball and socket joint. The ball on the stud is on the taillight assembly. The socket is on the jeep and is what it plugs/slots into. There may be a more professional description available, but I hope this helps.
Yes it can. If the blubs are the same and same age but one is dimmer than another, it can be an indicator of a weak connection. This tip will also work to correct that as it can enable you to have a more solid electrical connection.
Not likely. If both your lights went out at the exact same time, then it is more likely a fuse or relay. Have you checked the fuse box. Now if they are just both out and they failed at different times it is possible that this would fix it. But as I just said, first place to start is the fuse box and the bulbs themselves.
+shreddinlife It's just a spacer, you can use whatever you want. A little paper, whatever. All you're doing is forcing the little metal tab to have better contact with the bulb base contacts.
both my lights work until i hit the brake then only the right rear brake light illuminates while the left rear stays the same intensity, do you know where i can start with this problem? i've already replaced both bulbs
have you tried the tin foil trick yet? The items you describe sound like connection issues to the bulbs themselves. The tin foil fix can generally repair that.
That is strange. If you did the tin foil to the brake light, it is completely not connected to the reverse lights in the housing. They dont impact each other. As such my first thought would be to double check the bulbs in for the reverse section. Second would be to check the wire plug going to the housing to make sure it is snug attached. if not that, then fuses. Oh one other thing came to mind, if you did open up the reverse lights themselves, check to see they were inserted in proper orientation so that they are making connection with their respective connectors. I hope the above gives some avenues and one helps.
I wish this fixed my problem, but I'm still experiencing the same symptoms. What I originally thought was a blown tail light turned out not to be. The bulb had blown out and melted a little plastic on the socket. Obviously I got a brand new bulb and cleaned off the connection on the socket. That didn't work. Then I replaced the socket. That wasn't it either. I replaced the whole housing unit. That's not it either. I have everything - signal, brake, flasher - except right running tail light. The only thing I can think of is maybe I accidentally disconnected something in the lift gate??. I had the panel opened recently while fixing an unrelated lock issue. I wouldn't think there would be any connection in the circuitry between the lift gate door and the tail light enclosure, but I'm no expert. If anyone can help me trouble shoot, I'd be very grateful. Thanks
Eugene, Are all your break lights out? Do your hazards work? Because if they all blow out at once, it is your turn signal relay.... Heres hoping. Note: if your Hazards still work, the relay is likely still fine and not the problem.
Thanks for the reply! Both break lights and hazards function normally. Back up lights work. Signals work. The only thing not working is the constant taillight on the right side. Click on "show more" on my first reply for more details. Thanks again
Eugene Dapsoy Eugene, I'm having a problem with my taillights as well. The brake lights work, but no luck on getting the taillights to work. Initially, the right running light and brake light were no working. I followed the fix and now the brake light works. Problem I noticed now, is both taillights do not work. Any more suggestions FREngineering?

That said, it sounds as though you have it fixed! ruclips.net/video/lSrWZn9wVfg/видео.html
gracias mi amigo from mobile alabama
Worked for me!
Excellent.
I replaced my whole entire brake light assembly after trying the pry the connector pin up and still no frigging brake lights with the new one
Mega, so no brake lights even with the whole new housing? Did the new housing also include new bulb carriers? I would expect so. If that is the case, there must be something electrical up stream that is giving you issue. Is it just one side that is giving you trouble? or are both brake lights left and right out?
Far Reach Engineering
Hi there
Actually what happened is I blew the fuse to the brake light switch as well.
Far Reach Engineering I figured it out ! It’s a tail lamp pocket, thank you for your help 🙂
Thanks again!!!
Noah Douglas No Problem!
Thank you I've have the same issue.
You are welcome. Have a good one.
Thanks man!!
Will this work if one of my brake lights is brighter then the other one???
Yes it can. If the blubs are the same and same age but one is dimmer than another, it can be an indicator of a weak connection. This tip will also work to correct that as it can enable you to have a more solid electrical connection.
Far Reach Engineering Thanx bro!
None of my brake lights are working---what could be the problem?
Not likely. If both your lights went out at the exact same time, then it is more likely a fuse or relay. Have you checked the fuse box. Now if they are just both out and they failed at different times it is possible that this would fix it. But as I just said, first place to start is the fuse box and the bulbs themselves.
I was told there could be a chance of fire with adding the tin foil?
+shreddinlife It's just a spacer, you can use whatever you want. A little paper, whatever. All you're doing is forcing the little metal tab to have better contact with the bulb base contacts.
both my lights work until i hit the brake then only the right rear brake light illuminates while the left rear stays the same intensity, do you know where i can start with this problem? i've already replaced both bulbs
have you tried the tin foil trick yet? The items you describe sound like connection issues to the bulbs themselves. The tin foil fix can generally repair that.
tried the tin foil but now my reverse lights are outr
That is strange. If you did the tin foil to the brake light, it is completely not connected to the reverse lights in the housing. They dont impact each other. As such my first thought would be to double check the bulbs in for the reverse section. Second would be to check the wire plug going to the housing to make sure it is snug attached. if not that, then fuses. Oh one other thing came to mind, if you did open up the reverse lights themselves, check to see they were inserted in proper orientation so that they are making connection with their respective connectors. I hope the above gives some avenues and one helps.
Thank you. Gracias. Arigato. Gomabsudnida. Shi-shi.
You are Welcome. Da nada. Polxalster. Nechavo. All the best.
Should i do both sides
If the other side is also having similar issues, yes.
Do your turn signals and hazard lights work?
Can it be aluminum foil or it has to be tin foil? Asking for a friend. Lol!
