Genious! I can't believe how easy that was to do. I'm glad the part I ordered was out of stock or I'd be out over $80 for something so simple. I saw that the connections on the assembly were melted, but I thought the contact had melted away. Didn't even think that it might have been the melted plastic causing the problem. Mine is a 2006, and the contact does not pry up like the one in the video, but by cutting away the melted plastic with a razor blade I was able to get the socket connector to touch the light assembly connector again, and now the brake light works. Absolutely free. I love these "how to" videos. Thanks for showing us how to do this simple trick. Dealer would have charged $250 to install a new assembly and would have told me there was no way to fix the old one.
Guys, this video was on point! I've been searching for almost an hour through videos and forums after taking the lamp out and not being able to fix cause, apparently, everything was ok and the bulb was fine. I went on reading about fuses and cable quality, and realized that this is a common issue... the thing just melts and then there's no contact. My point is, edit the search terms of this video so that it can be easily found. More traffic for you guys and faster search for us. Thank you!
I am very grateful for this video! Thank you for taking the time to explain everything. I've been fighting with my tail light and I'm so happy to have a fix now.
I've been trying to figure this out for 3yrs on my daughter's jeep. Just found your video today and took less than 30mins to clean up plastic and bend the metal flap for better connection. Thank you!
Thanks so much for this video. I had this problem and was actually going to just order a new tail light, but, followed your instructions and it WORKED!! Changed all my bulbs while at it... problem fixed. Appreciation and Gratitude for this. :)
Thank you very much ! In just a couple of minutes your solution fixed the brake light issue on my 2004 Jeep Cherokee Sport (AU). I swapped the reversing and brake light sockets as you recommended and now BOTH are working! Amazing. Thank you again.
You guys are awesome, my wife and I had this very same problem. We took our 2007 Jeep Liberty to the garage twice and they couldnt fix it. After watching your video it only took us about 15 minutes and the problem was solved. Great how-to video!
Thanks for posting this video. It helped me with getting my '07 Liberty lights working again. To the fellow below who's never had a problem like this with their cars... I had this same thing happen on a '91 Chevy Silverado. The difference was I wound up buying the circuit board that goes inside the tail light assembly, and it was much more expensive than this fix. I've owned all brands of cars. The worst two were Toyotas. All cars have their quirks. They *ALL* break.
Thanks for that. Good audio, very understandable, good illumination, great subject. I have both sides out on an '05 Liberty. Sure gonna give it a try. Ben
Fantastic video. I had the same problem on both tail lights of my 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Your diagnosis was spot on and the fix was very easy. I had to make sure I didn't bend the contacts too far and made sure the bulbs were turned all the way in.
I keep getting pulled over for this problem and it's exasperting! I'm so grateful for this tip! Can't wait to try it. The folks at the Jeep dealership wanted 145 dollars just to look at it -- and that was just to take a look!
I have an 05 Liberty and my brake light kept going out. This was so on point. I did just as instructed and now I have brake lights again. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU
GREAT VIDEO!!! Fixed my 05 Jeep Liberty. The plastic wasn't melted just the metal connector was bent down and wasn't making a solid electrical connection. Thank you!!!
Thank you so much for this video. This "intermittent" problem has turned into a constant pain with both tail lights on my 2006 Jeep Liberty. Every time we get into the car one of us would have to step on the brake pedal while another person gave the non- working light a good smack. Lol. Drive car. Repeat. Now, no more ghetto Jeep.
Thank you! Break light went out, watched this video b4 even looking at it. Turned out 2 b the same issue. (mine was melted twice as bad) Fixed it as instructed, didn't even have to buy a new bulb, AND was done faster than the trip to the auto parts store would have taken. Thanks again!
You guys just save me USD160+. My 2004 Liberty has exactly same issue except it is on the right side. And i followed this video and, within 10 minutes, i fixed the problem. You guys rock!.
awesome Video instructions! worked for me and i didnt have to buy any parts :D only thing maybe worth mentioning is that i had to look up another video to see how to push the red tab to be able to disconnect the power cable...besides that perfect instructions! new light assembly cost between $49.99-$129.99....saved me time and $$$ and tickets. I already got pulled over once butt talked my way out of an actual ticket :D xoxox thanks a million!
You guys are awesome, I just watched your video, and then fixed the constantly "failing" brake-light on my 2007 Jeep Liberty sport. Thanks mucho for the video walk-thru!
Awesome! Fighting this for a year. Exactly my problem. Nothing like a $0 10 minute fix. Would have been 7 minute fix but had to figure out the slide lock to remove the electrical harness. You can tell I'm a true novice at working on these things. Lol.
Excellent! Thank you sir for the fix and upload. I have this exact same problem on the exact same side. I noticed the plastic had melted as well but didn't want to pick at it too much out of fear of damaging. I'll try this fix before i replace the lens housing. Thank you!!
I am replacing the tail light assembly for the second time and was told there is a component inside the brake light area that is falling out of place, landing on the bulb which then causes it to overheat and burn out. When I inspect the exterior of the assembly, I do see what looks like something that is out of place. Your video appears to be a similar but different problem. Do you agree and if so, have you heard of the problem described above? BTW, your video was very informative and helpful.
Thank you. Was able to fix myself And I am the least mechanical ever. Do appreciate it. Opened it up and yep one of the contacts was melted. Took a little bit to scrape the melted plastic. Did the best I can do to repair and Bam it worked. Hope it lasts
My '05 has a red tab that locks the wiring harness in place. You have to slide the red tab over, then you can pull the wires loose from the tail light assembly. Great video, thanks!
Thanx!! Replaced the bulb & "socket" - still didn't work 'til I found this video...a real struggle to pull that contact point out of the melted plastic 2 days messing with this damn thing! But it's all good now so, again...THANX!!
I have changed out my bulbs five times. I replaced the sockets too. Still lights are out everytime I get back in my Jeep! This fixed all my problems! Wish I had of seen this prior to all the bulb and socket replacementS
I will have to give this a try when I get home today to see if it helps. However, in addition to the sockets getting hot and brown, my bulbs keep exploding! The inside of the taillight plastic gets a little melted from the exploding hot bulbs. Since this overheating and lightbulb/electrical issue seems to be so prevalent, is Chrysler/Jeep doing anything about it? I am on my 2nd taillight assembly, have replaced sockets as well, and more replacement bulbs than I can count. Thank you for this video, will check out the connectors and give this a try!
This helped me replace my cracked tail light easily. The only problem I had was the electric connector was kind of sticky, but I just used a flat screwdriver to pop it open. If I'd gone to a dealership to get it replaced, this would have cot $185 and a waiting list. Here I only spent $56 on the light cover and $4 on the T15 torque screwdriver.
I've been reading the comments on Chrysler and I'm glad I don't own one. I have never had a problem like this with any of the cars I've owned. I've only had to change light bulbs and clear front headlights from yellowing. It looks like the newer may not be better.
Wish i would have seen this before, i replaced Both tail light assemblies (more than $300) and now the new assemblys are doing the same thing. I try this hope the lights havent fried the connection too bad. Thank you for posting this. I kept my VW Bus alive for many years with the John Muir old idiot book. Maybe Jeep needs something like that.
had this going on with both turn signals (rear).... one went out, then a week later, another. several weeks later as I have not been able to get to repair (have the bulbs), the right turn signal is suddenly working again.... thanks for the tips!
@sbab83 I had to junk a 2003 Dodge Intrepid with 83000 miles because the engine quit for the second time and I didn't have the $7000 to fix it for another 30000 miles. To add to it, the steering never worked right and all of the lights let water in the housings. I finally had to drill holes in the bottom of my brake light to drain the water that always made its way in. My 2004 Buick with 135,000 miles has only needed routine maintenace and some front end work (not uncommon in Michigan).
This would be a great application for LED bulbs as they use much less current and have a fraction of the heat. I think that is what I will do to my 02 Liberty so I don't have this problem.
@fixinggrace Definitely gotta agree with you on TrailBlazer and Envoy brake lights. I think if I had a nickel for everytime I had to change out those taillamp circuit boards, I could just say screw it and go ahead and retire.
@sbab83 Chrysler purposesly uses inferior parts to save money, even if it's pennies per part. This isn't to say that GM and Ford haven't had their issues either because Trailblazers and Envoys had a hell of time with brake lights not working too.
I don't think the back-up light and the tail light have the same socket..if you look closely at the socket housing the back-up has two contacts (one ground and one power)...the tail light has three contacts (one ground and two power-one for brake lights and one for tail lights)...If you pause it at 5:40 you'll see what i mean....Other than that, good video!!
yes Hector, the housing for the back up light only has 2 contacts cause the back up bulb only uses the 1 filament in the bulb.3157 but the other 2 holes in the house have 3 contacts because it uses both filaments in the bulb. not sure why, but the jeep has a 2 filament bulb in all three spots, but you only really need a 1 filament bulb for reverse 3156. When I change mine I'm gonna see if a 3156 bulb will work in the reverse spot just for the hell of it. lol....
@@zivondelossantos7209 what would you recommend if the break light is missing the 3rd contact? Could foil be used temporarily buy time to buy a new socket?

Even my brother-in-law, a master Chrysler mechanic, couldn't tell me what was wrong. This video was a heaven send. Sincere thanks from middle GA!
