You should have a chisel or plane for the flattening situation maybe finish on sandpaper after a few plane passes is what i would do

I did this using two tree branches, i found a piece the same size as your dowel and then found another matching my drill bit, it worked but sound isnt the best, need a bit of practice i reckon
