Very cool! My Dad taught me to make whistles from green poplar and willow branches years ago. It'd be great to be able to make whistles from dried timber and show him how, so many years later! Kind of a full circle project. I think that we'll do that this Father's Day since I am still fortunate enough to have my father with me. Thanks for the inspiration James!
Hi, it's usually a good sign when someone is inspired by your work... I made one today in one hour. I have kids and they were thrilled with my build. Man, that felt good. Thanks! 🙏
Would definitely like one of those aprons. I came looking for tips for designing a whistle for 3D printing and was blown away by this video. Simple and no power tools. Gorgeous.
Watched this with my kids and they want one now. Enjoying your how to videos and pleased that you are part of the resurgence of woodworking hand tools. Those old tools are very affordable and with your help and instruction fairly easy to use. Thanks.
I love this project. I'm teaching a woodworking class to kids at a summer camp this year and I've been looking for projects to do with them. This is perfect.
Hi James. Just ran across this video and just in time, too. My grandson's birthday party is tomorrow and this is going to be a present for him. His parents deserve it. Hehehe. When you mentioned about not going too far into the hole when cutting the angle and not getting chips in the hole I thought a tip would be to put in a sacrificial piece of dowel to cover the hole while chiseling the angles. I'm going to try this tomorrow. Thanks for the idea.
My grandad use to make these with me when I was a little kid and would only let me use handtools. Thanks for reminding me of such great memories!! Love your work and the channel. Have learned a ton from you!!
Just wanted to say thanks again. Made these with the kids for father's day. No power tools and they had a ball. Meant so much to them! Thanks for bringing it back for my family!!
This is such a well timed video! My old dog is going really deaf and I was talking with my wife just today about trying to retrain him with a whistle as he can't hear voice commands anymore. Out to the shed I go! P.S. I would love one of those aprons 😉
I would very much like an apron. I have thoroughly enjoyed your channel. You don't know it, but you really helped me stay sane while I finished my Master's degree. Thank you for all of the content and especially your attitude about the work you do.
I watch several woodworking channels, but I always come back to yours because I feel like yours is true "wood working". Always a pleasure to watch you make just about everything by hand...except for that Triton planer you use (I guess for your sanity). Great job as always.
I enjoyed the project & the video. I wish I could see a close up view into the notch. I watched twice looking for clarification, which did help. Thanks for posting it.
I love purple heart. My grandson gave me a 4 board-foot slab that I use to make scales for knife handles with damascus steel blanks. The combination is beautiful!
I LOVE this! I might make this for Father's day just to give to my 2 year old (he hasn't quite figured out how to shop for planes just yet). I'm curious about making this into a slide whistle too, but I love the inspiration. Thanks!
Great video for a Fathers Day gift! Thanks for sharing James. My dad has long past but I know there will be a whistle in my future!! I raised my son from 14 on my own so I’m a sort of mom/dad type of gal!!! I enjoy your videos James. Take care and Happy Fathers Day to you!!,
If I glue a store bought whistle to a piece of white oak fire wood using your glue test for reference, can that count as my hand tool build? I’ll take pictures and will absolutely give it away.
Great project! I was thinking about a father's day project for my sons and this might be a fun one. Just want to say thank you for the opportunity to win one of your aprons. I like the look of them and would enjoy winning one. Whether I win one or not I really want to express my appreciation for all you do for the woodworking community. THANK YOU! P. S. Congratulations to all the winners.
James, I’ve been watching for a while and I love your channel. I watch you than Alec Steele, in that order every day! Great build on the whistle. FYI, I’m working on my hand tool build for your challenge, can’t wait to submit it.

An apron will be one more thing for me to start woodworking!
Enjoyed the whistle. It took me back to making one from a stick with my dad. Thanks.
Down below. That whistle looks fun to make. My son had one that sounded like a train engine when he was younger. I should make him one of these.

Fun little project. Think I’ll make one tomorrow before work.

Purple Heart is awesome, and lol you testing the whistle after putting the dowel in drove my dogs crazy

Great small project. Looking forward to making this with my boys!
Awesome idea for the kids! And the idea of making tone holes is interesting too; you could make a simple flute to play some tunes on!
That is a great little project. Thanks for sharing.
Great project James. I like the idea of extra pitch holes.
I'm amazed at how you managed to make a whistle project turn Major Cool !!
Love the whistle. I will be making 3 for my Grandsons.

Fun project. I plan on doing it with my friend's children this summer.
Looks like something I could actually make. Great project.
Purpleheart is easily my favorite wood. I'm just starting but this would be a fun project to practice with.
i often wondered how to make those wooded whistles. Thanks
Thanks James. Another great job. I would really like to see a video sometime about using the compass plane...
A simple project that make me think on doing something similar. Thanks.
If I glue a store bought whistle to a piece of white oak fire wood using your glue test for reference, can that count as my hand tool build? I’ll take pictures and will absolutely give it away.
I made few whistles for kids. Nice project!
Great project! I was thinking about a father's day project for my sons and this might be a fun one.

I might try making a tiny whistle. We'll see how that works out.
Have a wonderful day!

James, I’ve been watching for a while and I love your channel. I watch you than Alec Steele, in that order every day! Great build on the whistle. FYI, I’m working on my hand tool build for your challenge, can’t wait to submit it.

Really like the short but sweet projects. Awesome video!
Great project that I'll be doing with my son thanks
Lovely idea, James - I can whistle while I work, using the whistle that I worked!!!
I like these small projects. Good way to build skills without it seeming like a major project.
Enjoyed the video. Thank you for your passion in crafting in wood.
“Whistles by Wright”, it’s got a nice note to it. Enjoy your Fathers day
Great video... This would be a great project for kids to make -- especially for Father's Day!
