  • System Shock is a legendary immersive sim and the remake work carried out by the iconic Nightdive Studios is simply exceptional. We've already reviewed the game in-depth last year based on its initial PC release but it's now finally available on last-gen and current-gen consoles. John Linneman focuses on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series versions of the game in this video, tackling the quality of the ports and whether the controller-based interface works well.

      Yeah, the road to this remake was long and rocky, there were at least 2 working versions scrapped in the process (that's why it took them so long from the initial kickstarter, they basically had to start from scratch 3 times over the years, because they were not happy with the results they were getting), but I'm glad they overcame all problems and still made it, because I personally think they totally nailed it and made justice to the original. I just hope they at least made some money in the end, because I would like to see other remakes from them like System Shock 2, Thief, Thief 2...

    Big issues with controller support for me are not being able to quickly activate hardware. You have to slowly move the inventory cursor, whose speed you can't change, over to the hardware you want and manually activate/deactivate it. Y axis movement feels faster than x axis and you can't change this either. Having a hotbar at all when using a controller instead of a weapon/item/hardware wheel. Deus Ex 3 switched between the 2 automatically. Nightdive's own Quake remasters and I think Turok as well added weapon wheels so it's absence here is odd.

    • @phrozac
      @phrozac 2 месяца назад +4

      Activating hardware using a controller was an issue that was brought up with the PC release last year. It still hasn't been fixed afaik. I'm honestly surprised they haven't fixed it. A weapon wheel is the obvious solution. I'd have thought they'd address this for the console release.

    Last gen games being capped at 30 fps because of the CPU makes sense. The PS4 Pro being capped at the same resolution and frame rate as the base PS4 makes no sense. I'm not expecting 4k like with the One X but that should be at least 1440p.

      The only thing that could realistically keep it from having a decent resolution bump is memory bandwidth, as PS4 Pro is about the same as vanilla PS4 in that case. Seems a stretch though. It's common for PS4 Pro games to be just 1080p unfortunately.

    Object specific motion blur is fine.
    The hate towards excessive camera blur isn't just a matter of preference for some of us; I've genuinely found some games so difficult to parse when moving around that i've had to give up on them because they don't let you tone down or disable the screen smear.
    You'd think that someone who needs glasses would be more sympathetic to the fact not everyone's eyes work the same! 😉

    Why did you not mention in this review that some control bindings are outright broken and do not work at all in these versions? You have a section of the video dedicated to talking about how it plays with controllers. There's no way you played this game with a controller and didn't notice that. Even beyond that there are other issues such as the painfully slow cursor speed in the menus with no option to increase it.

    The lack of gyro and trackpad support on the PS5 is disappointing. You already have to touch the trackpad to open your inventory so why not allow the menu cursor to be controlled with it? Other Nightdive releases supported Gyro so not sure why it isn't implemented here. The analog sticks feel really imprecise and overly sensitive (lack of proper acceleration curves I think is contributing here) in this game. Hopefully it gets fixed with a patch

    • @Cruxis_Angel
      @Cruxis_Angel 2 месяца назад +8

      Surprised they didn’t mention it. It’s my main persistent issue on PS5 compared to the series X. 60fps always feels better to me on Xbox because of the always on container. Not noticeable for some games but always hits me like a truck in shooters.

      @mbsfaridi 2 месяца назад

      DF mentioned it before aswell but why is that?

    • @rx1834
      @rx1834 2 месяца назад +1

      @@mbsfaridi There are two components to this latency reduction:
      1. Lower scanout lag. The image takes less time to be scanned out ("drawn") onto the screen in 120 hz, resulting in a lower delay. Pretty simple. This benefit also applies to VRR in 120 hz mode, which the PS5 doesn't typically do but this game is an exception.
      2. V-sync backpressure. A little more complicated, and the benefits vary between games. It has to do with engine frame rate caps not being perfect and the fact that v-sync adds a ton of input lag when you exceed the max refresh rate. By capping to 60 in 120 hz you never exceed the max refresh rate, thus lowering the average input lag. In this particular case, this might not apply if they are in fact capping to 60 with 1/2 rate v-sync without an in-engine cap.
      In most games I believe both of these will apply, which noticeably reduces input lag.

    • @mbsfaridi
      @mbsfaridi 2 месяца назад

      @@rx1834 Thanks! First one seem to be because of lower display lag and the second one, i'll search about vsync backpressure cause I don't understand how it would excede the refresh rate since the gpu would be waiting to render another frame if it's rendering faster than the refresh rate.

    • @cube2fox
      @cube2fox 2 месяца назад +3

      It would be cool if the PC space (Microsoft, Logitech, etc) collectively decided to finally create a "keyboard 2" standard, after decades of using the initial design. Then they could include things like an analog stick or support for haptic feedback. Many people love the mouse, but its partner, the keyboard, has long been bad at anything but typing text.

    • @drevistech4121

      That's not entirely true. There are linear switches for keys out there. I myself own a wooting keyboard that lets me walk run and everything in between. The precision of digital input for movement is crucial for a lot of games like tactical and movement shooters but indeed analog movement is generally better for vehicular based gameplay. Also even nearly imperceptible motion blur will quickly give me a headache so that doesn't help.

    I agree that per-pixel motion blur is great. Motion blur by itself, over the entire game is not great. I don't know of anyone on PC who leaves on motion blur. Other effects, like film grain, chromatic aberration, screen shake, and depth of field, are all settings that I always turn off. I can understand the premise behind these settings, and am not asking for these settings to be removed, because the more options a game provides, the better a game can be experienced. What I will say, is that when it comes to motion blur, not per-pixel motion blur, it should always be turned off by default. It's rare today to find a game with it off, but when you do see a game with motion blur turned off by default, that's a dev who understands what most players want. Why would anyone want to move around in game, supporting high frame rates, want to add blur between frames? Defending 30fps or motion blur, saying that it enhances a players immersion is not an excuse. This isn't a movie, it's a video game. You want 24fps and immersion, then go watch a movie. I think every single video game that is released today, must launch at 60fps, or don't even ship it. Don't tell me it can't be done. I still doubt the rumors surrounding GTA 6, that it will launch on next-gen consoles at 30fps. If this is true, I'm not buying the game. There is nothing next-gen about 30fps. We purchased these "Next-Gen" consoles for its performance. We don't need native 4k video quality on console. Leave that native 4k stuff with high frame rates to pc only. So many games offer a 60fps performance mode, we all know it will degrade the picture quality, yet we all use performance mode for that 60fps experience. This goes to show that the vast majority of gamers do not care about a native 4k picture, when we all select 60fps. Hellblade 2 launched with 30fps only, on the Xbox Series X, who promised us 60fps experiences for years, and did not deliver. Hellblade 2 could have launched with a performance mode, but they didn't do it, and a good reviewer should look at this from a console perspective, and always dock a point. I don't care if a game is a 10/10 game, if I was a video game reviewer and saw 30fps on these next-gen machines, I would have no choice but to dock a point to a 9/10. Actually, I'd probably knock off 2 points, because like I said earlier, there is nothing next-gen about 30fps with motion blur. We can all agree that Hellblade 2 looks absolutely gorgeous on PC running at 95fps, but don't say it's acceptable on consoles at 30fps. That's a bunch of nonsense, as we will see later in Olivers review.

      There're waypoints if you play the game with mission set on the easiest.

    I tried to play this on PC and found the fonts were hideously small for someone with visual impairments. Doesn't look like they've fixed that unless there is an added large UI toggle? Pity as I really like the look of this and Immersive Sims are my jam.
