Yeah, it was definitely something they glossed over, but I forgive them. The movie clearly wasn't meant to be scientifically "accurate," just dumb fun and entertaining. With the capabilities of their advanced technology, why would they man those robots themselves and risk dying? Present-day warfare is already being fought with unmanned, remote-controlled drones and aerial strikes. Soldiers fighting physically in robot suits doesn't make much sense, especially since we've seen the robot suits moving on their own as long as the neural link is established.
