I'm one the worship leaders at a small church and am transitioning from acoustic to electric. I have been having a ton of fun with it but acoustic and electric are VERY different beasts! This video has been so helpful to me! Thank you!
Best P&W lesson I've seen. I've played guitar for over 30 years and in a P&W band for the last 10. I grew up playing classic rock and have always struggled with electric P&W style. I like how you demoed the different techniques. It's hard for an electric guitar player but "less is more" when it comes to P&W.
One other technique I use is to roll my volume knob down to about 7 and play palm muted power chords - similar to single note lines. Works great between the bass line and another electric playing alternate chords or triads.
These tips might be super simple to you guys but they're super helpful for an acoustic guitar player finally picking up electric. Thank you! The playthrough at the end was particularly helpful

Awesome. I was trying to explain this to someone who only plays chords... for EVERYTHING. I kept saying to arpeggiate but the single note lead lines and diamonds are what I was thinking. I'll just direct him to this video.
Not playing at certain parts is really important for worship. My dad relates this to stocks in the stock market. It’s the process of supply and demand. The more you give out the supply, the demand goes down. But when you limit the supply, the demand goes up, especially when your supply is really good. Withholding big chords or awesome solos until the time is right gives so much value to them when they are released.

In my humble opinion, the most important thing to learn in this style of music is TRIADS. Not pentatonic, not modes, not jazz chords (I'm a jazzer) but just simple triads. Start with that first then move on to bigger and more exotic things like ADD2, SUS triads and extended triads. Scales and modes are used to connect different triads. This was something I wish someone had told me when I started. I learnt the scales first and felt always out of places or competing with the vocalists when I applied them because first, that's not what the genre is calling for, second I didn't have an extensive understanding of harmony, knowing the right key isn't enough. You have to understand chord tones and extension to apply the right and tasteful notes at the right place in the chord progression.
Great tips. In my experience, they're all very true. I have been preaching these to younger players for a while. It almost sounds counterintuitive... but it's not :) Great tones, too
The only thing I haven't done, without searching out the tab/music notation, is playing single note lead lines. The rest I've been doing. Yup, having two guitars playing the same rhythm parts just creates muddy noise, which takes away from the lyrics and melody. I really like to sit out from playing lead guitar on the 1st verse. On the 1st chorus, I usually play long sustained mid volume chords until the lead hook/turn around starts to bring the congregation to the 2nd verse. 2nd verse I either play Triads & short runs at the end of lyric lines, or on the 2nd verse I play a mix of Triads, single notes with in chords from a different octave voicing. The 2nd chorus is where I add more energy and am switching between bar & jazz chords higher up the neck, Triads and improvised lead runs to either the lead hook, or depending how the song is written to where the band jumps to the bridge at which time, I sit out for at least the 1st bridge. Then I come back in starting at a low volume with sustained barred chords or lower triads constantly adding more volume until we get to the double chorus, where we either go full volume to the end or start at full volume and then gradually taper off in volume until we finish acapella/vocals only. Oh and I sing too but not when I am busy doing more than chords or triads. It was over a decade since I was only playing rhythm guitar when playing guitar. I came back to guitar a year & a half ago, after picking up the ukulele 5 years ago & then the solid body electric ukulele, where I learned most of my fret notes & on which I started to play a little bit of lead hooks. Then when I came back to guitar, I only needed to memorize the low guitar A string fret notes to play lead electric guitar. My first musical instrument which I still own & play today is my Mollenhauer pear recorder. But my melodic lead playing comes from playing flute from grad 7 until the present.

yes because anthemic chord voicings is more holy and righteous than shredding. shredding will only send you to hell. sounding like U2 will definitely get you into heaven.
Shredding has its place and would sound great under right circumstances. I play in both worship and hardcore bands, and I almost see all worship guitarist too lazy to learn advanced techniques by relying on their expensive gear, as well as non worship guitarist thinking it’s stupid to play simple and easy stuff that don’t somehow show off all their skills. How to be a great guitarist? Never be limited in one genre or community and always practice.

That is a wicked looking guitar. I have a Strat and am thinking of getting a Hollow Body as well for those bigger songs. Should I? Any chance you guys could do a video on the different guitar shapes and their difference with sound and when you would use them.
I had a strat as well, and I actually just recently got a Dusenberg TV Phonic (similar to what he's playing in the video). Honestly my tone has improved dramatically. Just depends on what you want. A hollow body is going to make your tone much warmer and not nearly as spanky as a strat. I LOVE it for worship music. It's all personal preference though

Nice. I come from a rock a roll background so it's been really nice learning how to play worship style even know that's not my favorite but it is very useful.
This has been a big help for me, thk u, it seem ive been on the right track to what you have been saying, but im told very different in my fellowship that i only need to play cowboy chords, and nothing else, i feel this limits me and the music being played.
