Excellent info man. Its hard to find a back yard set up on youtube thats not over seas. I'll be studying your info and getting in touch next spring. I'm interested in a setup only for family food not to sell.
Thanks for the video! I'm curious about adding substrate to a setup like this. I can see where substrate is beneficial because it adds more surface area for beneficial bacteria, improving cycle stability and food availability. BUT it seems like the substrate would also make it harder to catch and see certain shrimp, and it could also trap food and make the tank more difficult to clean. It also adds an additional expense. Are there any pros/cons I'm missing here?
@@thegardenofeder Good point! I was under the impression a lighter background led to condensed pigmentation, but not less. If that were the case, then the pigment should spread out quickly when transfered from white to black but that doesn't seem to be the case. This study supports what you said in suggesting they actually accumulate and store more pigment on darker backgrounds. Interesting to see some sellers like flip aquatics use bare-bottom white tanks if that is the case. Thanks! notablesdelaciencia.conicet.gov.ar/bitstream/handle/11336/152747/CONICET_Digital_Nro.481e8e85-a985-4e39-a6b2-4b6dae5e975e_A.pdf?sequence=2&isAllowed=y
Ironic that the first time I watch this video, yall have another hurricane making landfall. Florida, right 🤷♂️ Hope yall aren't getting it too badly. Do you always wait until a tank is cycled to add substrate? I assumed you would add it when putting it together to let the biofilm develop on the substrate as well.
Wow love the setup.. stumbled on your video looking for summer tubs ideas. Where can you get these preferably new or food grade and average costs? Thanks for sharing. 👍👍👍
Looking to have a set-up like yours with about 6 tanks. I am currently gathering my materials to start. I know I have to get the tanks and the filter. What are the other things I need? And any amazon or ebay links to get them? Also do you have an amazon or ebay link for the filter you are using?
Just the tank, air pump, and sponge is all you need. I get my sponges from a local place and we don't have an Amazon link so you can just shop around for the size you need.
I don't worry about how many I've started some with 10 and others with 50+ as long as quality is goof the numbers will come and you will have less culls and work
I get so many orders going out each week that as I catch the shrimp for them I go thru and Cull anything that doesn't meet my standards. I use big nets and catch as many shrimp as I can with out messing up the plants.
actually sulfur is not very water soluable, with your air bubbler it will quickly make SO2 and leave through contact with air - it will not hang around too long.

2:21 funny watching tipping of IBC with 1” PVC in way on top…looks like all my job sites!
What an impressive setup.

Substrate is 100% needed for the shrimp to color up otherwise they will wash out just like in barebottom tanks

Very impressive setup!, What kind of shrimp are you raising? Where do you purchase the fryer?
We breed neocaridina outside. What fryer?
What kind of tanks are those? Looking to have a small setup at home for food. Do you have any books or resources you recommend for starting out.
IBC totes and everything is basically self taught or we watch loads of videos to come up with our own solution. However these shrimp are not for food

Hurricane cleared us thankfully! no we usually add substrate first
I guess I've got some catching up to do I don't believe you ever showed us how you built those filters?
I just bought filters rated for 250 gallons they were not diy

I love this but man I have to ask is it a total prick of a job to cull those tanks?.. I would like to do something like this
I get so many orders going out each week that as I catch the shrimp for them I go thru and Cull anything that doesn't meet my standards. I use big nets and catch as many shrimp as I can with out messing up the plants.

I guess it just washes out really easily then but that's funny the chemist that builds the bombs told me that so I was just going off what he said.
What is a price per tank that you use?
$50-$100 depends on how used and clean they are
