iTunes bio: There’s a reason Taylor Swift sounds so confident and cool on Lover, her seventh album and the most free-spirited yet. She’s in love-pure, steady, starry-eyed, shout-it-from-the-rooftops love. Arriving 13 years after her eponymous debut album-and following a string of songs that sometimes felt like battle scars from public breakups and celebrity feuds-this project comes off clear-eyed, thick-skinned, and grown-up.

Hey man thanks for the spoiler
Lolllllll
That makes sense though. All reviews in the end are informed bias, and "a good Taylor Swift album" is *going* to be something ARTV hates, just because of what kind of music he rathers. This album seems to be getting a reaction that can be predicted by "did you like Taylor when she was still country?" even though it isn't remotely country excepting a return to long absent folkish specificity in lyrics and general conceptual framing.
Jessie le Fey artv didn’t hate it...
Dashie41 4.5/10
WE DID IT
MARK IS USING BI LIGHTING
At the risk of sounding like a total SP noob, can you please explain? I've been reading comments about the bi lighting in some of his reviews as well.
Reputation was the explosion, Lover is the deep breath
Great description.
Yeah. They're both bad.
Carl L you’re allowed to have an opinion but it’s still wrong 😍
@@Noah-rq3xt If I hadn't heard good music I might have agreed with you.
Taylor really needs to pick better singles. Every album after Fearless I've been thinking "Oh god, this album's gonna blow" after the first 1 or 2 singles. And it's only really come true for Reputation.
Lol agreed. Even rep had some good album cuts. New Year’s Day is a beautiful song.
I Think Shakw It Off actually It is her best Lead Single
Guyboard It’s her most successful but not her best
@@Aaron-he3qd but actually every time i hear this song ot is great and catchy. The Best Choice For a Lead Single
Nah, reputation is her best album.
My prediction: he’s going to rate the album any number from 0-10. I’m confident!
Chocolatezeus Productions omg you were right!!!
Talent oh shit yea
It's kind of ironic that we would have a legitimate classic on our hands if the album was trimmed to - wait for it - 7 tracks.
cutting out 11 of the 18 tracks huh? which tracks? would it require resequencing those 7 tracks
Track that I think would have been okay to stay:
I forget that you existed
Cruel Summer
Lover
(Maybe The Man, only because of the meaning. Sonically it's boring)
The Archer
I think he knows (?)
Miss Americana and The heartbreak prince
Cornelia Street
Death By a thousand cuts
Soon you'll get better
False God
Afterglow
Daylight
@@daltonriser1125 Yes
The tracklist would be
1. The Archer
2. Paper Rings
3. False God
4. Soon You'll Get Better
5. Lover
6. It's Nice to Have a Friend
7. Daylight
The only songs that I'd feel necessary to cut would be "The Man", "London Boy", "ME!", and "You Need To Calm Down". They're insignificant enough to the overall themes of this album that they won't be missed, and we'd have a genuinely great album with that bit of fat trimmed out.
It should be:
I Forget That You Existed
Cruel Summer
Lover
I Think He Knows
The Archer
Miss Americana & The Heartbreak Prince
Cornelia Street
Death By A Thousand Cuts
Soon You'll Get Better
False God
Afterglow
Daylight
The production on Death By A Thousand Cuts was gorgeous, I couldn't tell what you were talking about there.
This album is much more cohesive in sound and believability . Plus some really emotionally touching moments and writing is at her best.
Love the coloring in the background (it keeps getting better for every video). This review now makes me wanna check out the album even with me not being the biggest TS fan (I do like some of her music). Whatcha wanna bet that The Archer might make Mark's best songs of 2019 list, or hit songs of 2019 if it charts well :)
I loved the bridge on the man I will say hat
Taylor served great bridges on this album, for sure
*that
Rob Harrison yes.
Angel Luis Lantigua yes!!
I gasped in shock when you said Lover is her best album since Speak Now. That's literally what I've been thinking on the album!!
You know it’s a big one when the description is a watch/10
it has been like that for some of the others lmao look at some of his other fairly recent videos
I agree, it's her second best album after Speak Now. I actually liked some of the "divergent" tracks like London Boy, even You Need To Calm Down and especially The Man which I thought was one of the best tracks on the album, so I'd rate it a bit higher but I'll take a strong 7/10 coming from you.
Best album since Speak Now, yeah probably. Speak now is still #1. Change my mind
Dalton Staley red is definitely up there with Speak now
Listen, I've been saying this for years and everyone ignores me lol
My ratings for each track on the album...
#1: 'I Forgot That You Existed' (7/10)
#2: 'Cruel Summer' (10/10)
#3: 'Lover' (10/10)
#4: 'The Man' (7/10)
#5: 'The Archer' (9/10)
#6: 'I Think He Knows' (8/10)
#7: 'Miss Americana & The Heartbreak Prince' (7/10)
#8: 'Paper Rings' (9/10)
#9: 'Cornelia Street' (9/10)
#10: 'Death By A Thousand Cuts' (6/10)
#11: 'London Boy' (9/10)
#12: 'Soon You’ll Get Better' [ft Dixie Chicks] (10/10)
#13: 'False God' (8/10)
#14: 'You Need To Calm Down' (7/10)
#15: 'Afterglow' (6/10)
#16: 'Me!' [ft Brendon Urie] (6/10)
#17: 'It’s Nice To Have A Friend' (7/10)
#18: 'Daylight' (10/10)
TOTAL: 145/180 (80.6%)
For me, I guess the only real unpopular opinions are 'London Boy' & 'Afterglow'. The former might be slightly biased since I'm British, haha, while the latter is a decent song overall, but I felt the production was a little basic and forgettable.
Regardless, so glad you liked the album this much. Such a big improvement from 'Reputation'! :D
😱 I love death by a thousand cuts
I was looking forward to this!!!
Not complaining at all but you had to make the Marianas Trench reference and now I'm gonna listen to Astoria again
I love the album hehe Taylor is back I don’t like the singles except Lover. I hope she continues to just make good songwriting albums like this without the radio pop songs. She is an icon
Been waiting for this! Personally I thought that despite a few masterpieces (The Archer), Lover suffered from being overlong long and incohesive. 6/10 for me.
Amazing review =P
I agree with this 100%. 1989 is a classic, but this beats it pretty bad. It has a similar sound to 1989 but seems less circular and repetitive, more vulnerable, and just seems to have overall better lyrics in general.
I'm half convinced the songs with "a message" are intentionally sabotaged in an attempt to get her critics to beg her to stop, after years of begging her to start. It's the only logical reason why she would write a feminist anthem about how women kinda suck actually and she'd be much cooler as a man, or comparing a gay rights organization to a similarly titled brand of trash bags.
My problem with the man, is that it makes men feel bad about being men, and tells women that they'd be cooler if they were male.
I am sure she wrote it with good intentions, but it was executed horribly.
Also undermined by the fact she's neck and neck with Adele, another woman, for the title of Best-Selling Artist of the Decade. And both have sold double the first man to appear on that list (Eminem). If anything, being female has been an asset, especially in pop music.
@@mariokarter13 people always tend to judge male artists more. You'll see that in the popheads community (the "fandom"(?) For pop music) 95% of people listen only to female pop singers. (Some listen to bands with a male singer, but actual pop stars- only female), and say that all male pop stars today are boring and bland (that I kinda agree with. Here and there, you'll find hidden gems.)
I will never understand why Cruel Summer was not the first single!
Well, I know a certain someone who will not be happy about this review...
Lmfao
Who? I don't get it.
Best: Soon You'll get better, Me!, You Need To Calm Down, The Archer
holy shit u nailed what the best and worst tracks are
Looking forward to the BROCKHAMPTON review.
Yeahhhhhh soon you’ll get better hit waaaaaaay too close to get home...
I personally loved 1989 (8.5) more but lover is pretty good, I gave it a 7 on my channel. I feel like lover is a bit overlong and has some clumsy writing and also a bit disjointed but still good.
What you could do to improve your presentation: make your background more modern. It looks like a college dorm room, quite outdated, like you're just starting out with youtube. Furthermore the 'subtitles' that pop up in your videos are so distracting you have to pause the video to be able to read them. Your content is interesting and well-written, but it could be more inviting if you improved on these things.
watching this religiously 👀
I agree with you on this one. Excellent review
BEST Songs: Yntcd london boy lover the Man miss americana paper rings me! Cruel summer
Worst songs: the archer i think he knows false god death in thousand cuts
“This is Taylor’s best album since Speak Now”
1989/Red : “am I a joke to u?”
That’s his opinion
I thought the horns did not work on false god haha. I love seeing different opinions
Ginger review please
Could you review Twilight Force Dawn Of The Dragonstar please
I’d never walk Cornelia street again
red's her best album, listen to it again
That’s his opinion
Meh, I like 1989 better. These songs are overall too minimal for me. "Forgot that you existed" and "I think he knows" etc. take too long to build. Too much reliance on lyrics which I think are under par. I'm also quickly realizing that she is a melodic one-trick pony.
Fuck. Im a swifties but how dare you mark this album 7.0 when NFR is only 6.0. LIKE WTF IS GOING ON
I ruined the 666 likes
Satan is gone to call his daddy
I have to disagree with you on this this album wasn't great just my opinion 18 tracks is too much her lyricism is bad some songs like Paper Rings, False God and You Need To Calm Down are my least favourites. Overall it's not terrible unfortunately i am giving this a low 4.5/10
No way this album was better than thank u next
That’s just his opinion.
Vertigo The Artistry his opinion is wrong
Ethan P I don’t think you know what an opinion is
Vertigo The Artistry and my opinion is that his opinion is wrong
Ethan P But an opinion can’t be wrong, it’s your opinion and you may disagree but it’s not wrong
when u said Archer is the best song.. I didnt take ur review so seriously lmao
Is it fair to dismiss an alternative viewpoint merely because it opposes yours? Could you learn something by being open to hearing the basis of their perspective and challenging your current beliefs?
But you gave TA1300 a seven? Bruh.
This is a joke
It's an apples to oranges comparison between those two albums, as they're massively different sonically, lyrically, and thematically. The albums are evaluated and graded based on how well they accomplish their own goals, not on some rigid binary that defines "good music".
Sure, the first two singles ("ME!" and "You Need To Calm Down") are underwhelming compared to the rest of the record (aside from the dud "London Boy"), but they don't represent their parent album well at all.
This album is classic Taylor, this is the pop album we should have got from her instead of those Max Martin produced 1989 and reputation.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Agree
Eh, I wouldn't say 1989 is much different quality-wise. They're both mixed bags, with some really shitty low points like some of the singles, while both also have some of her best songs period.
I loved the shit out of 1989 and will defend it
It's kind of baffling how ME! was the lead single. Maybe Brandon Urie was part of the reason, but the fact that they cut out "SPELLING IS FUN" from the Spotify version is very telling. It's so not Taylor Swift that I'm glad that the album basically leaves it alone to dry in place of an actual Taylor Swift.
There is actually a theory that says:
The number of letters in that sentence is 13, which is the reason the album came out 8/23 (8+3+2=13), so maybe the hate towards this line combined with her frustration that we didn't see this Easter egg made her remove it from the album version
ME! was easily the worst song on this album
@@ahri3887 for me it was still better than London Boy and maybe It's Nice To Have A Friend
@@ethanbrown6188 I'm glad i wasn't the only one who didn't like Its Nice To Have A Friend. As soon as I heard it I assumed it would be a fan favorite but I thought it was so pointless
@@ahri3887 the production is sooo lame. Sounds like something from a free app, and something that even I could make in like ten minutes. And while it's lyrically good, she doesn't have a lot of "screen time" on this, and she should've wrote a bridge or something to save this song.
Also it's super short, too short to have all of those instrumental parts without singing.
I was REALLY worried leading up to this album's release...
Same 1989 is still my favorite
As a Swiftie I learned that her leads singles are the weakest on the album, but when you listen to the album you change your mind.
Same here
Yep I was too
Where my London Boy stans at?
Stop saying Stan.
@@knowyourroleboulevard7119 No.
@@Rob-ew9id why bother to use that word like that? Your devaluing Eminem's work.
@@knowyourroleboulevard7119Lol how? Eminem stans are probably glad the title of one of his songs has passed into popular usage, you can't get too much more iconic than that.
@@Rob-ew9id Eminem's stans are proud, though he and his fans arent. Stan was literally made for Eminem to adress how he doesnt like his stalker fans (stan). As it's not right and too disturbing. Theres a difference between stan and fan. Hell you could of just said superfans. Nobody likes stans trust me. Nobody. That would be like saying where my murderers at to a artist who seems cool but dangerous like Kurt Cobain or Chrster Bennington or Chris Cornell or Layne Staley.
I really liked the album and agree with your opinion and score. This is a very good pop album, even if it's long and undercooked at times. I really liked the organic and synth production in the deep cuts and the honest writing that gives it some personality. I think it's better than Red and reputation and is more of an artistic statement than 1989 was. Good stuff 7/10.
Best- "Lover," "The Archer," "Ms. Americana and the Heartbreak Prince," "Cornelia Street," "Soon you'll Get Better," "False God," "Daylight
Worst- "ME!," "It's Nice to Have a Friend"
Its nice to have a friend is the best song of album...the second verse has the best meaning nd u forgot cruel summer...it really shows how dumb u are!
Lover > Reputation periodt
8/10
Best Songs: Cruel Summer, Lover,
The Man, The Archer, Miss Americana & The Heartbreak Prince, Paper Rings, You Need To Calm Down, Afterglow, Daylight
Worst Songs: London Boy, It's Nice To Have A Friend
You need to calm down is a guilty pleasure for me and I like it.
@ruke I like the corniest to the lyrics. I understand why people wouldn't like it but for me its of my favourite songs this year and from her.
‘Red’ is hands down her best work lyrically and sonically.
Daniel V that’s why I was surprised when he said this is her best since Speak Now
Never forget that Mark threw an enormous tantrum at Red in place of a review.
@@gracecarpinter8623 Although his oldest reviews from his blog aren't as well crafted and professional as his more modern ones (funny how he didn't talk in detail about many of the songs on there in said review of 'Red' aside from the ones he hated), a fair amount of his points still stand and it can't be entirely dismissed as a "tantrum".
Her transition from country to pop was rough at the start, as she struggled to maintain a distinct identity sonically and lyrically in a genre she wasn't as well versed in at the time. The songwriting in particular lacked the organic detail and relatability that made her first three albums (especially 'Speak Now') resonate. While "The Last Time" with Gary Lightbody is a great song, the duds from that album ("We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together", "The Lucky One", "22", and especially "I Knew You Were Trouble") sent questionable to repugnant messages (likely unintentionally) that simply can't be excused.
I have no idea why so many people are head over heels with 'Red', I'd rank it among her weaker projects alongside 'Reputation', both getting a light 5/10.
The Idealistic dude RED has the best lyrics lmao what are you on about
@@peterfabietti2803 If you want to make a claim like that, you need to be ready to back yourself up. Just because a viewpoint is held by a large group of people doesn't necessarily mean that it holds up under scrutiny.
The First 2 Singles do the album no justice. ME! was shit, as was “You Need to Calm Down” (tho it is a guilty pleasure, it’s shit, but it’s MY shit).
Best Songs? Cruel Summer, Miss Americana & The Heart Break Prince, Paper Rings, Soon You’ll Get Better & The Archer.
I Forgot That You Existed, The Man, Lover, Afterglow, False God & Daylight come close, but just miss the mark.
Along with ME! & You Need to Calm Down, London Boy is probably the main dud on the album.
Matthew the Sylveon London Boy has grown on me so much, that chorus is like candy!
YAY I’m so happy you love Lover ❤️❤️❤️ Cruel Summer & Paper Rings are definitely some of my favorites but it’s truly one of those albums that it’s hard to choose a favorite because the album is that good 😊😊 I agree that it’s definitely her best since Speak Now (although I’m like you in that Speak Now is truly her best one but Lover comes very close) 😊😊
yeah this was a great one. Definitely one of Taylor's prettiest, refreshing, mature (for the most part) and daresay, best albums
Light 8/10
Best Tracks:
Paper Rings, Soon You'll Get Better, Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince, Cruel Summer, Death By a Thousand Cuts, Daylight, Lover
Worst Tracks: You Need To Calm Down
Definitely needs to pick better singles, aside from Archer which is fucking awesome
I kinda wanna do a video on Taylor Swift and Drake and the similarities between the two. I'm glad Mark pointed out the reasons for their massive success in the 2010s. (They're dueling for Artist of the Decade atm)
I guess the top 10 is going to look something like this :
1)Taylor Swift
2)Drake
3)Rihanna
4)Bruno Mars
5)Adele
6)Justin Bieber
7)Katy Perry
8)Ariana Grande
9)Kendrick Lamar
10)Post Malone
@@gabrynaig9585 it's too early for Post to reach the top 10. Eminem might make it in not him.
I don't think there's a lot of similarities when it comes to actual albums tbh. Mainly because Drake's recent albums have been incredibly long and boring with not much of an arc to them at all.
@@gabrynaig9585 Drake is in the lead rn I believe but if Lover does well she might take it
Take: Me! Being the leadoff single is a much worst mistake than Look What You Made Me Do being the leadoff single for Reputation.
i have been a taylor fan since 2007 when she first burst onto the screen. and i will say i think this album is amazing and i always judge and album by how many songs i skip if that makes sense. if i feel like i can sit with an album on while doing work or cleaning the house and not feel like i wanna skip by any songs then its a winner for me and that is this song every song has its merits and a few songs of course have its flaws but over all this is a top album in her career. I am really pleased and happy that someone else has given speak now some attention i really loved that album although its not my favourite it really elevated her as a artist and as a performer as well. it was also some of her best singles Mine is one of my favourite lead singles of hers and im looking forward to what she does with that album when she re records her music. i also have had a lot more respect for reputation in re listens recently as that i felt was her weakest album but im liking more and more as i listen. as a swifty i dont personally think shes ever had a bad album just more there have been bad songs with her overall album itself being pretty good. Do u have a review for speak now? if not id love to see one. maybe even a music evolution video?
if i had to rate her albums for me personally right now (and it changes every week haha) it would be

Yessssss, I’m so glad you liked this... for me, it’s a 10/10 I genuinely love every single song
Yes it was. Best album since Speak now. Same here, Finally!!
Cruel summer is obviously an apex song… but credit should go to miss Americana and the heartbreak prince, death by a thousand cuts and the man

I'm pretty sure he's just comparing the 3 big albums of the year.
Isn't Adele's next album supposed to drop in December?
And NFR! Will be better then those three by a mile. (No hate, just facts)
