But with 2 AC20s that can reliably delete a ton's worth of armor each from existence with every pull of the trigger, the Demolisher is an ever present reminder that tracked vehicles still have to be taken seriously even a thousand years into the future.

    Some fun info about the Mark XXXIII Bolo for those curious - it had/has/will have an average ground speed of about 115 kph, going up to a flight speed of ~500 kph if it diverts its shield power to its counter-grav systems. As the video says, the main armament is 3x 200cm (5 megatons/second) Hellbore plasma cannons, with a secondary armament of 16x 30cm Hellbores, though the video doesn't (through no fault of its own) give the factoid that the original Hellbore mounted on a Bolo, a 25cm on the Mark XIV, was originally designed as a naval battlecruisers main gun - a tiny little pea shooter by comparison (though tbf, that was at least over 1000 years before the XXXIII rolled out). It's breech loading mortars have a rate of fire about 8-12 rounds a minute, and the big 40cm ones have a range of about 10 kilometers (its got "small" 15cm mortars as well), and as such, would probably be considered "close range" defensive weapons. I don't know if anybody ever bothered to count all the anti-personal flechette clusters and lasers on it, so we'll just say "many".
    All in all, with its... generous firepower (those 200cm guns are more than enough to blast spaceships out of orbit), meter(s) thick armor, external and internal shielding, and an internal counter-grav system that meant it could land itself from orbit unassisted, the Mark XXXIII Bolo is considered a "planetary siege unit", capable of conquering modestly defended planets in small teams, or even solo, with whole brigades of 24 units operating together, presumably for heavily defended targets. Even though it is preferred to operate a Mark XXXIII with a single human operator, its sophisticated, sentient AI means it's perfectly capable of operating completely autonomously, just like its predecessors going back to the Mark XX.

      In "Notes On The Ogre", Mr. Jackson laid out his thoughts on what he considered reasonable sizes for his Ogres. A Mk I Ogre was roughly twice the size of a modern MBT( and three times the weight), you can extrapolate the others from there. The upper limit was when one was enough of a threat for the enemy to spend a strategic nuke to stop it.

    THE OGRE! YOU HAVE THE OGRE! I'm so happy to see this beast -- I have a copy of the game that I bought a couple of centuries ago (at least it feels that long ago), it consists of a heavy paper field of play, a very basic instruction book, and a whole bunch of little cardboard playing pieces that had to be punched out of their print sheets, all in a convenient zip-lock type plastic bag. Aah, the good old days... :-)

    • @MatthewBaileyBeAfraid
      @MatthewBaileyBeAfraid Год назад +1

      Hi… I was one of the Playtesters for OGRE/GEV, and painted many of the Miniatures for the Box-Art.
      I am hoping to convince Steve to do a newer version of it based upon an Alternate Universe created by the OGRE-verse’s version of the Superconducting Supercollider creating a Parallel Universe(s) (one of which will be the OGREThulu-Verse, with a new, much scarier looking OGRE-Thulu… Sadly… No GEVs in these Universes, but they will be replaced with something just as fun. Possessed Zombie-Tanks being one of them). I got him to agree to hear the pitch with the new artwork (Had to clean-up 25 year-old artwork in the process).
      But new OGREs will now have their own Artillery (in addition to Missiles).
      But the newer releases of OGRE are a lot fancier than the older Bagged Metagaming Pocket-Games that we played in High School at Lunch (mostly Melee and Wizard, because they were the fastest, but we had one lunch period a week that was an hour, rather than the 30 minutes of a typical one, where we played OGRE/GEV), or the Plastic Pocket-Boxes of early SJGames.
      They have huge boards with paper-cutout tanks that assemble into cardboard miniatures (or you can get some with the regular miniatures - I can’t remember if he went through with the Plastics or not????)…

    • @MatthewBaileyBeAfraid
      @MatthewBaileyBeAfraid Год назад +1

      And there is a GEV Map you can buy that goes with the newer OGRE Game, in the OGRE Designer’s Edition (You get the GEV Map and the Shockwave Maps).
      And he did get some of the Minis done in Plastic.

    • @MatthewBaileyBeAfraid
      @MatthewBaileyBeAfraid Год назад +1

      And yes… He did release some of the minis in Plastic, with more planned. He has been farming-out the different games to others to support the production of, and as such the priorities are controlled differently.
      Hoping the new Pitch will result in newer OGRE Options (also an Illuminati related Project, that is connected to the Real World… Not a LARP sort of thing, either).
      OGRE/GEV are also available as Computer games, and Nintendo or other Console Video Games, with a Computer-player as an option.
      Expect an AR version of OGRE/GEV, where the Playing field is an Empty Table with Units controlled by Markers that are moved on Virtual Terrain. Don’t know what is going on with this, though, but it was something mentioned as “looking into,” and the existence of the Nintendo, Steam, and other Video Games means that the basic Engine is completed, and just a new display would be required.

      I'd rather say the Bolo series definitely had plenty of thought go into it. There's a clear and consistent technological progression behind it, it features similar levels of "logically if x then y" bits of design and setting - like how tanks in Slammers have such long range, theyre able to gun down satellites and render air and near orbitsl power useless, late model Bolos were mounted on the outside of their transport ships to act as weapons and armor. There's actually a *lot* of thought in them. They aren't just bigger tanks, but they have similar levels of thought and tonnage put into everything from kotive systems to EW. A lot of the bolo stories are less about "big tank bigger tonk than other guy so tonk win" and more about Bolos using their intelligence and reflexes to defeat disparate forces.

    Gunhed (spelling is correct), Gun UNit of Heavy Eliminate Device from a live-action Japanese movie of the same name. You also missed off the tachikoma from Ghost in the Shell, ca. 1 tonne or so. Others have mentioned Tank Police, the signature tank is called Bonaparte, very similar-looking to the SV-001.

    I'd like to have seen the Imperial Landtanks of the Cabal in Destiny and Destiny 2, although the games don't really give you a great look at their exterior, with both the Halphas Electus and Cerberus Vae III being only seen from one side and the enterior. Based on the latter however, it's plausible that they'd be among the heaviest tanks on the list.
