Well, now we know why tanks in service were designed by engineers... Jokes aside, I know you likely know a lot about theory and were just having fun, but I guess that the most entertaining part of watching people design their first tanks in Sprocket is exactly because many lack experience and it gives you a window into the minds of people, who designed first tanks. You can see why experience of artillery officers and designers lead to Saint Chamond, why naval shipyard designed Char 2C and how automotive manufacturer came up with FT-17. Each had a piece of the puzzle they knew about and they worked with what they had. Their knowledge, their experience. It took almost 30 more years to come up with modern tanks and a few decades more for them to turn into sameish looking MBTs we know.
Absolutely! Despite all the jokes, Sprocket quite neatly demonstrates the characteristics of tanks and how design plays a part in it's use. Quite in-depth if you really think about it
This can be backed up by simple planes players who start out making cursed meme planes, vehicles or ships to making their own parts instead of using the ones that come with the game and the enginuity of a skilled simple planes player becomes instantly noticeable
Now you have made the world ending tank, the only thing that can kill it is itself. (Btw this game is a total meme the only purpose you have in it is to make the most cursed tank you can possibly imagine and it ussualy might even perform good enough)
Bruh, meanwhile me= i made a tank thats beautiful, weights at 36 tonnes but can take 220mm pen to the face and 47km/h speed :) Also me= make a weirdly cramped APC's that can fit many ppl like a sardine can, while no infantry present in game.
Note that the scenarios in Sprocket are only balanced for the tech level they are set at by default, and that they are NOT in order of difficulty. No Tank's Land (the first mission) is considered to be easily the hardest scenario in the game with default settings due to the horrific terrain, artillery fire, and the presence of both entrenched AT guns and enemy tanks.
The reason your tanks got stuck in the first gear is probably because your engine was set to "Target max RPM" higher than it's able to output, in the engine design screen you should change it to be at least 100RPM lower than the engine can output. The reason your last tank bounces a lot is actually a bug that happens if your suspension is way too strong. In the track screen if you switch tabs you can adjust the strenght of your suspension by changing lenght/diameter of the torsion bar (There's also HVSS but you can't really tweak that and besides you didn't use it there). I don't know what the optimal torque is but 3x specific weight works just fine.
Real life Tank Commander discovers Sprocket. Proceeds to imediately create blursed Fallout/Warhammer 40k mash-up monstrosity just like the rest of us. Good video, enjoyed.
I was rather thinking the Orks from Warhammer 40k. As they would paint their tanks yellow if they think its gonna make it fly or something (And knowing them it would)
Having done civil construction in the swamps, I can say the wider tracks were the right call! Basically what you're doing by using a wider track (or thicker mud tires on your tractors), is your spreading out the footprint and the distribution of the weight so you don't sink down. It's the same logic as using a snowshoe.
I actually had a idea about a tank like the russian apocalypse tank you have that i called the yw60 cat tank that is the same as yours but a few different decals like it had thos somewhat russian viewing thing's, you know the red eye's beside the gun. It had some railguns instead of normal cannons. Also had a raidgun on top that uses the used shells as ammo so we waste the whole shell instead of throwing it on the ground and called it a day, so yeah. powerful
Meanwhile Red alert 1 mammoth tank: BRUH why am I not here Red alert 1 heavy tank: Me too CNC Generals Mammoth tank: Hi brother CNC Generals Overlord Tank: BRUUUH
Oh yeah the World War I map has a few interesting quirks about it. Namely that there are huge pits that are designed to just bog you down permanently; even some of my longer tank designs can't cross those. The trenches are a bit hit-or-miss but most of them are crossable if you have a long enough vehicle. On a more generalized note Sprocket has a surprisingly in-depth track, suspension and drive system so you really want to tinker with your engine and gear systems while you're making your tanks. (or you could just be like me and have like 3-4 prefab gearbox/engine combos to make things simpler) Lastly I'd love to see a series where actual tank commander provides their perspective on a combat situation in Sprocket and then either designs a vehicle for that task or has a bunch of other people do it and rate which one did it best. Then you could probably go into why you think X or Y vehicle was really good at a certain task and generally share your experiences/knowledge about it. Let's be real and assume at least 90% of the people playing Sprocket picked it up because they like tanks and having someone with an insider's perspective is invaluable.
Glad you think so although I will admit I didn't know what half the settings did at the beginning. So... It's not that different from randomising things tbh haha
For crossing trenches, it would seem to me you need a longer track print(don't know if that's the right terminology), ie the parts of track horizontal to and in contact with the ground. That way when the tank tips forward over the trench the other side of the trench is not met with the upwardly inclined front portion of track, killing momentum, but a flat piece effectively slightly further back. A short track print also fits inside the trench width, effectively locking you in both ends. In short your track print needs to be longer than the width of the trench.
From my experimenting in trench crossing in sprocket, I have figured out the games doesn't actually consider the tracks, only the wheels (as in, the tracks between road wheels are purely cosmetic, no physics), which seems to be a common 'hack' for tracked vehicles, as circles are much easier for physics than tracks. Anyway, for trench crossing it will often be the case where the sharp edge of the trench wall will end up between the idler/drive sproket and the front road wheel, and wedge itself on the lower glacis. Also a problem when you have really soft suspension, over a trench the front one can over-compress and bottom your tank out. I have had some luck jamming a road wheel waaaay up front so its almost in front of the glacis. Still can't fix the bouncing issue though -_-
You makes black magic tank that can climb 45 degree angles (how bruh no shit I make can climb over a damn curb) meanwhile I make an equivalent of an MBT that is immortal on three sides.
I worked out that the bigger the sprocket gear, the harder it is for the engine to move (I think!) so smaller gears and more engine power (and more ground clearance) helped to cover rough ground pretty well. But of course it's harder when the tank is heavier lol
The mini tank (gold/yellowish and red striped) could of probably been very deadly since it could avoid direct artillery and just go in circles around an enemy tank that’s not as fast and doesn’t have a rotating turret
>late War 7.5t Tank >in WW1 also, that's easily the hardest mission, just because you get stuck everywhere, even once you cross the trenches. The game really starts on mission two in the Interwar period.
A huge problem with this game is that the tracks don't actually perform like tracks, it's pretty much just the roadwheels that do the work. Which is even more of a problem when crossing the trenches, the tracks just clip into the trench edge.
Honestly the original definition started from a British codeword to hide what the vehicle even was. And the name just stuck. So, it kind of inherited a very vague definition. These days it's virtually any armoured vehicle with the sole purpose of carrying an artillery caliber gun and fighting on the frontline. Still kind of vague tho haha
