    On important thing to note is that regardless of the mode you're using, the lighting conditions of the room play a big role in eye strain. If you have a single bright object (the screen) in an otherwise dark room (for example if you're checking your phone before bed) you're going to end up with more eye strain than if you're in a lit room. This is because the contrast between the bright screen and the dark room cause your eyes to constantly switch between narrowing the pupils to block light from the screen and widening the pupils to take in more light from the dark room. This can be easily mitigated by simply turning on a lamp to light the room. Even if the room isn't as bright as the screen, it can reduce the contrast enough to significantly improve eye strain.
    When I was young I would always play video games late at night with the lights off and I would find that I quickly reached a point where my eyes were burning so much that I had to stop playing. But since I started leaving a lamp on I've been able to go all night without any issue. Definitely an important factor to consider if you're concerned about eye strain, just make sure the lamp isn't directly in your field of view or it could cause the same issues you're trying to avoid.

When I asked her why the theaters were completely unlit during movies, she just replied, 'Oh, that's different'. yes, and no.
    at night it's better to use dark mode since your surrounding is dark and having the screen blasts your eyes with white pixels can be blinding at night. but it's the opposite during the day since your surrounding is bright, so people should use light mode to read texts easier as opposed to reading white on black, which can cause strain to the eyes.

    • @BomberLT
      @BomberLT 5 лет назад +14

      While you are correct, you can also use room lights at night and have screen surrounded in bright background and this way light mode is still better. But that poses other threat - if you use too much light hour or so before sleep it affects your sleep badly. So it is better to use dark mode with blue light filter before bed.
      I think this video is talking mostly about screen usage during work tho. We have regulations for office to have certain amount of light and that means that it's lit enough to have our screens white background.

    Dark-mode only saves battery for OLED screens where each pixel is an LED; but for LCD screens and "LED" screens, the LED backlight is still on even for dark areas (though more advanced screens might have "local-dimming" which turns off sections of the backlight). The LCD just acts as a mask to block the light from the LED backlight. Of course OLEDs have their disadvantages as well like good old-fashioned burn-in.

    I used dark mode for more than 4 years (2018-2022) and lately I started to notice that it was difficult for me to read in dark mode. For example- news, articles, editorials, basically anything which consists of big paragraphs!
    So, from the end of 2022 I am using light mode again. Although initial days were difficult to adjust because of 4 years of dark mode, but now it's easier to read and it's also good for productivity.
    The only thing I miss from my dark mode days is how good the aesthetics were and still are in dark mode!
    But it won't be the reason for me to go back.

    I'm old enough to have started with monochrome displays with dark background. When I added a physical switch to my home computer to invert colors, dark on white background, it was a huge benefit to readability and eye strain, and I used it all the time, except (for obvious reasons) in a chess program. While this benefit has been reduced with better screen technology, I still find light background to be much better. When "team dark" acolytes talk about "searing white light", I suspect that this is because the brightness was turned up to cope with the worse readability using dark background. While this makes dark background "less bad" for readability, it does mean that the same brightness is not well-tuned for just switching to light mode. Arguably, dark background can make good sense around video content dominating the display.
    Of course, the battery life factor is real, but only with OLED (or similar) displays. With the still rather widespread LCD displays, the full backlight is turned on all the time, and blocked by individual LCD pixels to display dark.

    There's actually no reason that old CRT computers had to use black backgrounds. While yes, it is black when it turned off, so are LED screens and a good amount of LCD screens. There's actually no reason other than convenience that old computer used black backgrounds. They could've used colored backgrounds if they wanted to. Actually, you can just put a polarizer on any screen display to invert the colors, and that's what most LCDs do.
    Old CRT based computers had a binary option for color through a single pin. So all that was needed to do if you wanted to flip it was just use a couple of wires and a transistor (which computers were made of many thousands and today millions upon billions) to make the signal opposite of what was sent. Though, admittedly, some display types made that harder, though those weren't introduced until later when color display became a thing

I'm in front of my computer basically all day, and trying to read long comments on YT with dark mode it's really difficult, most dark modes have this problems, that's why when I have to read long texts I use light mode, like in the browser looking at documentation, but strangely enough I can't do the same for codding, probably because the contrast of the dark background with the color of the keywords is way better that with a light background, also you are not really reading when you are codding in the same way than a long paragraph.

I did this specifically because I noticed I had an easier time reading dark on light than I did vice versa... but I also really have a problem with large blocks of bright colors & eye strain.
    Far as dark mode goes, I have a preference for it on CLIs... but that might just be from familiarity LOL. I've also occasionally made the text gray for CLI, which after watching the video I'm guessing would help deal with the contrast/light bloom issues
