      Remember how giddily she was describing the meds she took to lessen the menopause symptoms? There's a way to talk about age related health issues without being all glum and bitter and acting like a grandma. Samantha talked about it like it was fabulous because SHE always made sure to be and feel fabulous.

      Yes!!! Miranda was the most butchered of all the returning characters. Quitting her marriage to Steve? Quitting her career? Aimlessly cleaning up seaweed? Dating & obsessing over a broke comedian? Suddenly spending huge time and money on freakish fashion choices after dressing like a normal human for decades? Having absolutely no confidence or self esteem when she is the Harvard graduate & ex- law firm partner of the group? Dying her hair to please her peers? After decades of constant cocktails under all sorts of stressful situations, NOW she decides to be an alcoholic??? How did that even differentiate from how much they all drank before? And then she quits overnight without ever hitting a rockbottom?
      I could go on. :-)

    The problem with reboots and revivals is that people forget it was popular because of what it meant culturally at the time. In its era it meant something to the people living those times because it was relevant and it wasn’t trying to push anything on people. Now these reboots are trying too hard to fit into this new era and it doesn’t work.

      I actually brought up this exact issue in a Reddit thread when the first season of AJLT was airing and people downvoted me to HELL lol. And yes, I did receive many a “everyone grieves differently” response. That is very true, but at the same time this is Carrie Bradshaw we’re talking about, and for over two decades we’ve watched her fall apart in relation to her relationship with Big. And we are supposed to believe that when he finally bites it, her initial response is subdued and she’s back to normal life within a couple of weeks? It was so inconsistent with everything we’ve done to know about Carrie. But then again, AJLT has absolutely decimated the legacies of their characters; don’t even get me STARTED on Miranda.

From her breath-of-fresh-air and not overdone modern fashion sense and her general social intelligence, I feel like she'd make for more entertaining and thought-provoking TV.

      @cherylhulting1301 2 месяца назад +1

      @lizziebkennedy 7505 Oh please. I'm LGB and I recognize how unrealistic the transformation of Miranda's sexuality was. Which is too bad, because handled properly, it could have been ground breaking television.
      But as Miranda never gave even one hint of interest in women during the original series, it just read as false and unconvincing. The discovery of Miranda's bisexuality needed much more development and credible context to work. You can't just wholesale change an established character with her own history, just because Cynthia Nixon didn't want to do intimate scenes with men anymore. She's fee to make that choice in the future, of course. But Miranda Hobbs was a straight married woman, and MPK had to put this character through a ringer to change the situation, rendering Miranda practically unrecognizable to fans in the process. If this was how Nixon felt, the story needed better development, or a different actress to play the mature Miranda.
      That's the problem. I'm all for making shows more diverse; New York is one of the most diverse places in the world. But the wokeness didn't integrate well with the history of the characters in any meaningful way. So it ended up feeling grafted onto the show, instead of indigenous to their real life experiences.

    For me, AJLT failed miserably for several reasons.
    1) We all know how much Kim hated SJP in real life. Trying to use Samantha’s character via text was a desperate attempt to recreate a dynamic the viewer knows is non-existent.
    2) Miranda’s over-the-top endless squawking. Jesus. It made my ears bleed. She proved herself to be a shit wife, partner and mom. She had zero redeeming qualities this time around.
    3) Charlotte’s bad plastic surgery.
    4) Introducing Carrie’s new friend as a Samantha-esque character.
    5) The pointless introduction of random characters.
    6) It kills me to say this, but the fashion detracted from every scene. Are the clothes gorgeous? Of course. But they overshadow everything else on the show.
    7) While bringing Aidan back was nice, it was total bullshit when Carried questioned herself about letting the ‘wrong one’ get away. As much as SATC revolved around Big and Carrie, now you tell me her love for Big wasn’t all that big? That she loved Aidan more?
    Effing stupid. And just like that, AJLT sucks.

    Its like we share a brain. I suffered my way through the 1st season, mostly because of nostalgia, but cring ed at so many of the things you mentioned: Sara Ramirez' character Che was just AWFUL: an unfunny comedian, love interest who couldn't - or didn't want to - commit, just an unnecessary character all the way around. Steve's character was treated shabbily; the showrunners' barely mentioning Stanford, who was very much a 5th main character of SATC. So disrespectful of Willie Garson! And thank you for pointing out the heavy-handedness of shoehorning a bunch of brown-skinned characters into the mix, as if the showrunners suddenly remembered the series was set in VERY diverse NYC, not some small town in a flyover state. As a black woman, I found it both clumsily executed and offensive. By the way, I couldn't even hate-watch Season 2. Friends who watched told me it got better, that eventually AJLT started to feel more like SATC. I'll never know. I couldn't bring myself to watch. Definitely wont watch Season 3, now that its clear that this entire endeavor was just a money-grab. Also, as so many others have stated: Seema's OK, but she's no Samantha -- and no Samantha, no me.

      You make some excellent points! Very true how disrespectful to barely mention Stanford, I also kept asking - shouldn’t Charlotte have seen the best plastic surgeons in Manhattan? Why does it look like she decided to bargain basement her Botox? Seemed like the show was trying to be preachy. A sad attempt at trying to let the world know “ See? We’re good people…we believe in this and that and please like us!” I saw enough of that garbage on ( also unwatchable) late night TV.

      I'm sorry you felt disrespected by the actors of color being seen more as window dressing than integrated parts of the show. I fully understand, and I felt that way too. Frankly they did the best job with Seema, and I have always liked Sarita Choudury. But I agree that she's just not Samantha.
      I particularly appreciated the questions you brought up about Che, because I didn't understand her function in the narrative either. Why have a love interest who didn't ultimately want to commit? Was this clumsy writing in response to the fact that the audience didn't warm to her? Or was it purposeful? Was her lack of commitment meant to make Miranda think about her own early issues with Steve? But if so, why does it lead to their break up? Was Che only meant to be an "agent of liberation" for Miranda's sexuality and her boredom with Steve? If so, is Miranda going to get another shot at a more fulfilling relationship with another woman? And what really happened in her relationship with Steve, to take a woman who met him on the Brooklyn Bridge to being one who dumped him fur a chance relationship years later? Young Miranda was awfully sensible to be likely to do something like this.
      I suspect that my questions entail more thought than the writers wanted to put into it. The new direction for Miranda seemed driven more by Cynthia Nixon's wishes and the desire to be trendy with the LGB and TQ communities, than anything indigenous to Miranda's history.

      100%. The women in Golden Girls seemed older than 50 something and were at a different stage of life (children were all adults, were now grandmothers) than the women in AJLT, but so much more fun, funny and well written. I want to be like the Golden Girls one day. The women in AJLT had the biggest modern day stressor removed from their life; they were wealthy and never had to worry about money. It doesn't buy happiness but it damn well helps protect against many sources of misery. The depressing story lines then just seemed tone deaf in today's world, while other people struggle to buy food.

      i remember there being quite a few jokes at the expense of black, asian, transgender, and bisexual people in satc. carrie and her friends were either perpetuating stereotypes, or the minority characters were made to be ridiculous and annoying enough for the mains to “justifiably” say something racist/anti-lgbt in frustration. like aidan, or the trans women samantha calls the t-slur for being loud and annoying her.
      carrie and her friends at one point shame aidan for being bisexual and yet all the characters are somehow completely accepting and non-bigoted toward all lgbt people. samantha and the trans women all get along at the end of their episode as if no hurtful words have been thrown.

    The biggest problem they had was that the original show didn't have to try so hard. It was interesting and entertaining. This version has them complaining about getting and being old when they're only in their early 50s. I'm not in my fifties, but I can appreciate the idea of old age, and though these women weren't old here, they acted like they were cryptkeepers. They whined and complained about everything, and the show was just miserable. Then there was the vile part about Big dying. They could've started with his death having happened in the past with Carrie having gone through the mourning process already. But they chose to start with a depressing note. And the way they wrote out Samantha was grotesque. They truly crapped on her character by claiming that she abandoned her best friends, who in the past had collectively referred to one another as each other's soul mates, and yet they had Sam walk away because as times changed, Carrie no longer needed Sam to be her publicist. This made it seem as though Sam only saw Carrie as her client and not her best friend.

Same set of cliches and tropes that's always been there, especially for women but this series seems to have extended it to men .... you're DEAD AT FIFTY RAH! And the hip breakage .... yeah, you know MAYBE for women who starved themselves for decades and developed osteopenia as a result, but breaking a hip in your fifties is not normal for women! That shit comes way later, if it comes at all, and is usually right at the start of the slippage toward serious infirmity. My biggest issue with AJLT, and why I feel like it doesn't fully capture the essence of SATC, is that I feel that SATC gave the characters a weekly theme through her column. Something to explore with specific weekly questions to be asked on life and love. Now that Carrie doesn't have her weekly column it feels like a ship without a rudder. But I end up watching AJLT anyway and hate-loving it anyway because I'll always spend time with these characters no matter what.

  • @breakingbadgoddess
    @breakingbadgoddess 10 месяцев назад +15

    The biggest problem is the writers. In a nutshell, they suck. It’s lazy writing throughout and I feel no investment in the characters old or new. Charlotte is basically a caricature of her former self. Miranda is the total opposite of what she was during the SATC days. Miranda use to be confident, strong biting and cynical, but, now she’s insecure, anxious and rather pathetic. I could live with Carrie’s selfishness and self centered nature because that’s who she was in her character. But she doesn’t seem to have any purpose.
    Everyone else is superfluous in the name of diversity. I just feel they were so focused on hitting every diversity button that they forgot to write intelligent witty dialogue. So, the whole thing is just trash. I didn’t even bother to watch the second season. I didn’t want to completely destroy the memories of the original series.

What a bomb- totally unlikable characters - self-indulgent writing ( the 12 year olds writing it thought “ I like it-so everyone else will!” You also had to tolerate the story line between Miranda and the totally unwatchable woman they matched her with. Don’t know her name - don’t care.

    I used to be a HUGE fan of SATC but couldn’t find the heart to watch latest release as I find the new cast and latest topics ridiculous. I just couldn’t waste my valuable time to connect to the storyline. Carrie dealing with grief but then move on to dating different men and having sex with different men like she did when she was single.

  • @seashelle3734

    I really feel, the reason why the show Sex and the City WAS so very good is simply because it was so relatable, in so many ways, the dating life, the boyfriends, the breakups, the sex stories, the city life, the close girlfriends relationships, the talks, the real talks, and even the differences in careers of the girls, and their financial situations differences, and it was talked about. Most of us could say we've had the experiences or have had those same questions or conversations with our girlfriends, and could easily relate to the single gal city life. Now, it's painfully unrelatable, it's just not even near what most of us can relate to, and there is less humor. The ridiculous wealth, the over the top clothes, makeup, cosmetic surgeries, the wealth, again, and the arrogance and pompus attitudes, like most people in that space, they do not even know they are that way, and this is what I see in the show. Arrogant wealthy people, that are too stuck on themselves, to really be with each other (and the audience). I really miss Carrie's narrative that was a big thing that made the shows feel like you were actully included in what was happening with the girls, and in the show, like you were a participant, that could relate. Her questions, typed, on the screen, spoken outloud and discussed by her narrative was really something to always think about, and again, more often than not, relatable, then the show it was something to look forward to watching, like visiting with friends and hanging out. But NOW, it's a different show, that's lost touch with the spirt of the original successful show; the close friends and the sharing of thoughts and conversations and experiences. The history is there with the friends, but they seem to be different people, that we just don't know any more.... maybe like real life... people and places changes... sometimes for the best and sometimes not. There are so many real opportunities that could be explored in this new series, that are missed and overlooked, or only touched on. I still have hope, and will watch the next season, hoping it comes somewhat back to what WAS.

    Smart and on point. I thought what made the first series brilliant was Carrie's voice-over narrative. We knew exactly the point of view in which to view the lives of the other characters. It was the narrative glue that held four divergent plot trajectories into a cohesive whole. This coupled with the hyper aesthetic of haut couture and labels made the series visually stunning to watch but never losing the relatability of the characters. SATC is absolutely one of the most brilliant series ever made which it makes it impossible for me to endure AJLT.

    AJLT was so damned disappointing because every one of the main characters had doubled down on being the most obnoxiously self-absorbed privilege nitwit who decides to detonate their life when things don't go their way, with no thought about the schrapnel they spray about--and no indication that there has been any personal growth or indication that they have learned anything in the years between show movie and show. Perhaps not only Ms. Catrall but Samantha Jones realized that she simply cannot carry on being this incredibly narcissistic. I am a fan of a certain level of aspirational escapism, but all of Carrie's "problems" were mostly solved by marrying rich--and then when he had the good taste to die quickly while she is relatively young, she can now have the life of a wealthy widow. Quite frankly she seemed more distraught when he left her at the altar than when he died.

    I honestly suspect SATC was so popular because the fans were young and experienced so the plot holes and general stupidity was ignored. The first time I saw it in a hotel room at 21 being a careful budgeter because of my dad I gasped at the bad financial decisions Carry made. It annoyed me but I don’t think most people are raised by massive cheapskates(he made me pay for my feminine hygiene products in high school so I worked for basic necessities)missed it. Younger audiences are more educated, more educated by internet access, and not the target audience. Those of us were young with the first go are dealing with being closer to retirement and paying for kid’s college and where we might consider watching people without those problems this show is not it. We have dealt with enough vain self absorbed weirdos at this point to want to watch them toss their wealth around.

The way they did it was infuriating.

    When they bring these people back, they are always in arrested development. We like these characters, Will, Grace, Charlotte, Frasier, Samantha....we want to know what happened to them? We want to see that Will became a Partner and is wildly successful. The Grace got married to a man that loves her and replaced Will. That Jack is no longer couch surfing at 50. The Charlotte, found her fairytale. That Frasier has started a new phase of his life, is happily married and has a great career. But now, they bring them all back in their 50+ and they are still acting like they are 35 and that their promising lives never progressed to anything. They were aspirational, and they come back as a let down!

    They really jumped the shark in the second movie. The 1st was great. The series really destroyed Sex in the City like they never even knew what the first series was. Miranda already experimented with a woman and decided she wasn't gay. In fact, Miranda was very self aware, and she absolutely wouldn't reinvent herself to help people. Her character was always the best at expecting people to do the hard work.
    As for Carrie, killing someone off is a lazy plot device. Just like making someone cheat in a relationship is just ignoring that people have other ways of being destructive in a relationship.
    At least Charlotte being OCD about her children being perfect is within her character. Yet they used the tokenism here as well as a plot device by making her daughter changing her gender. This could have stood alone if they didn't make every new plot have to include a diverse character just to be diverse. The substance was sucked right out, abd instead we were stuck with 3 trite woman. It was absolutely unwatchable and I do not even think Kim Cattrall could have saved it! She was smart to stay FAR away.

  • @ciaransammon
    @ciaransammon 10 месяцев назад +8

    It was fucking appalling. I was the biggest SATC fan on planet earth. The minute Cattrall wouldn’t do it, it was already over. In addition, to all the DREADFUL details of AJLT.
    MPK is deluded. As is SJP. He said the 2nd film was actually great & treated too harshly. That will tell you where his level of reality is. Now, I love the 2nd movie because I love the gals but relative to the original show or even the 1st one, it’s nowhere near. And there’s no redemption for him. A tired, old KWEEN wearing skinny jeans because he thinks the kids think it’s hip.
    AJLT absolutely eviscerates the incredible legacy of SATC.
    Also, Will & Grace (sort of) got their revival to be pretty okay. Though without Rosario, who knows!

    I think Samantha made the show bearable because she was rational but interesting, she was so true to herself and her character was the only one that truly grew. I thought season 1 was alright. It had its atrocities, mostly just the forced inclusivity and the hard to watch character of chea. Its forced and out of place to say the absolute least. Then season two came and the writers may or may not have just documented what transpired with the character in a inland empire style. That or just an snl skit where they just pop in an unexpecting Character for a gag. Then there’s this cardinal fuckery where they just undid the entire series story arch of big. Having a whole segment of watching Chea’s character having her own screen time to Kerry leaning in to Aiden in this grand sex in the city style saying the line “ maybe that was a BIG mistake” talking about what an audience watched be built pretty much for a whole long running series, two movies, and a whole season of a spin off .. I’d say it was a “big” mistake 😬 literally a half of the run time of season two is a slap in the face to the series and one of the most grinding pieces of film I’ve watched and my neighbor had me watch all 7 season of pretty little liars. Now that I say that I’m realizing all this did was match that. It may not have beat it, but it’s still an near unattainable feat. They minus well bring steinfeld back for a “pride month event”, it would be more watchable.
