As a cellist who has played these movements over a lifetime and modestly appreciate the difficulties....I am blown away by the skill of Xavier. On a cello is one thing but on an instrument requiring greater spans it must be like climbing a staircase where the treads are twice the height of normal stairs. Bravo !
@@Kiwi2375 Yes Elizabeth...and comparing how a cellist usually plays many passages 'legato' rather than the majority of notes bowed separately by the bassist, that challenge to play 'smooth and flowing' as you described, is clear. Impressive.
I came here because I'm a big fan of Edgar Meyer's interpretations of suites 1,2,&5 on audio; it is amazing to watch you play suite 1 so well. This is sheer virtuosity.
OMG! You may throw away the cello, it is no longer needed... THIS! Seriously, I've heard far less inspiring recordings released on CD. This man deserves recognition and fame. This is no easy feat for the double bass.
Standing Ovations from my side. I am Cellist by myself and I really enjoyed it on the double bass. Really fantastic on the double bass. I really enjoyed it 🙂
Xavier, your bass has a warm, sweet, amazing sound that i have rarely heard in a bass. Also you are able to bring out the most quality of the instrument. Very talented musician, and an amazing instrument! A great combination
I remember you from Sewanee Summer Music Festival in either 2008 or 2009, I think 08’. I remember you’d always be playing Bach at any moment of downtime. I think you were in middle school at the time, maybe freshman in high school but you’d know better than me, either way it looks like it paid off. Great seeing you as a mature performer, sounds great!
Just watched this and wished I had the joy of playing a Bass violin. This is a memorable classic that I'll master one day soon. I know the prelude of course... which bassist doesn't learn to play it pizzicato at least on bass guitar and fingernail pick it on acoustic guitar? Even Pianists will learn it just to sound it in it's entirety. I'm going to try to figure it out by ear only. Thank You Mr. Foley. :-)
Bass violin. do you mean double bass or the ancient predecessor to cello that was abandoned 2 years after invention? if you mean double bass the term "bass violin" just hurt the souls of every bassist know to man. -a bassist still waiting for his 204 measure of rest to end so he can actually play with the orchestra
I have be messing with this piece on bass for years, but I never actually considered playing it in this octave. Did you start by transcribing it into this octave?
Hey, lol I know I'm not Foley but I am a bassist in college where Bach is almost humorously considered a rite of passage. In order to play it in this octave transcription isn't necessary. There are commonly accepted editions of this Bach suite used for basses that are already transcribed. Examples being maybe an Edgar Meyer, Jeff Bradetich, or Gary Karr edition to name a few. However as a student of Luis Gomez, FIU and a yearly student of Jeff Bradetich I'd reccomend the Bradetich Edition. Happy playing
I'm now convinced, actually. Although the German bow has a heavier contact with the string (comparing to the French one), I wish I could one day play like Edicson
I'm wondering if Xavier would come to my house and teach my bass to play like that. I can't seem to manage it. Maybe I just have a very stubborn bass.🤨
Not good man . Did you read the music ever ? Not anywhere does it indicate grotesque stocatto and abuse of the instrument........... and A ? gah !! Ok, I’m just jealous , and never have I heard Bach played like this . Absolutely brilliant my man !! 😍
@@evanstephen300 yeah memorization is never an issue with sheet music. Sometimes it's helpful to have the sheet music, but if you achieve the tone this guy got, it is more then memorized
Xavier Foley, thank you for sharing this video with us. I am learning a lesson from you. To stay calm and not to lose the focus when the stop comes out unexpectedly. Very well done. I have also been learning those fingering choices. They are helping me fix some issues in my execution of this suite on the double bass. It is also encouraging, by giving me more confidence that it is ok to keep playing it even when something undesired happens. This video is helping me improve, and inspiring me. Thank you!

The difficulty is the string crossing and making it as smooth and flowing as a cellist can play it.

Masterful!
real recognizing real
Would love to see you playing duets with Xavier!
Sir - you are pitch perfect - and that is not easy to do, when playing that far down the fret board on a double bass! Absolutely incredible.
The amount of emotion you play with is outstanding
Played so softly, smoothly with your heart and soul. I love your playing with inner-joy❤️
This guy is a legend!

Beautiful. Great Job 👏🎻
You play so beautifully. Thank you!
Superb. I never thought the bass viol could sound like this, so rich and full of overtones.
As we say here in Spain "dos palabras IM- PRESIONANTE" ... love it.
Sounds beautiful! The piece is written for G Major but was performed in A Major!! Still perfect
Right! It's likely that he had on solo strings and was using solo tuning in case he was playing other rep during this recital not in this video
@@bassbennettrides Correct but I believe he chose solo strings because they are brighter and more responsive for solo playing.
perfect pitch gang

This is so much better than cello
Are you playing in A using solo tuning?
for sure

Why?
Rushed and lifeless, that’s all I can say.
Double bass isnt that hatd its really easy you see you have to use 4 fingers to play 1 note
SOSO,too fast,no depth
Beautiful!
Bravo!
