620HP 15.0L Cummins fuel system diagnosis. (Part 2)

- Will we finally get the 9620R started? The story finally continues. Got the tractor back in the shop for more diagnostics. In an earlier video, diagnostics led to replacing the high pressure fuel injection pump. During the repair, I noticed the inlet screen to the pump was clogged, so I suspected a contaminated fuel system. Could not build enough rail pressure to start. Replacing the pump finally got the engine running, but it would not start without ether and once it was running, it was rough and smoking really bad. In this video, we finally get to fix all the issues the contaminated fuel damaged, which includes replacing the fuel injectors and flushing the fuel tank.

You and Josh need to go on the road. The ZETH and JOSH ROAD SHOW. Millions would be waiting and watching with such awe. Really enjoy your sharing the knowledge and experience, also thanks to Sloan Implement for allowing you the time to do this.
That would be cool!
I totaly agree! You are welcome to Sweden for a tour of workshop when ever that possible for you! Thats a No brainer folks! From Peter Eriksson CEO Falun Maskin Service Sweden Europe! 😅😊😊
Really enjoy you and Josh working together. Great education on injector and fuel issues. Love the channel
Thanks Zeth for a very interesting video. I have been ranting most of my life about having clean fuel and having filters on bulk-storage tank dispensers, cleaning tank filler/caps on machinery and the potential issues more recently with bio-fuels and algae. This really has shown the issues it can cause and the real expense too!
Great point!
Good dealership, josh is getting a hell of an education.
Thanks for another great video.
It was most interesting and informative.
Wow. Those injectors are really sensitive to the quality of the fuel. I had heard that but you and Josh just showed how sensitive they are.
This exercise in replacing the injectors was most interesting. The amount of fuel in your cup was extremely lower than with the old injectors.
Appreciate you and Josh working together. You two make an excellent team. Thanks to both of you.
Just goes to show how sensitive these injectors are to fuel quality. Learned a lot on this one ZK.
Thanks for everything ZK and Josh.
The Iowa farm boy. Steve.
Thanks!
That is another impressive video showing what tests that needed to be done to see what injectors needed attention. There is a progression of things. Thanks for showing us.
Good video.the risks of pre filling filters oil or fuel is never worth the risk.big problems an money and down time.good detail trouble shooting.thank you Sir.keep em coming.
You and Josh are an awesome team!!
Had same issues with our JD 9530, new injectors solved the problem. We never had issues with diesel fuel when it had sulfur in it. When the epa took the sulfur out then these types of problems started showing up.
They took the sulphur out for a reason 🤡
Zeth another exceptional video. You and Josh are the dream team. I enjoy watching you diagnose problems and getting them resolved. Thanks for sharing your knowledge keep the action coming. Catchya at the next one. Stay safe!!
Glad to see the team together, great job an informative
It’s always a blast to work with Josh!
My friend um glad u and Josh got that big girl up and going again replacing all 6 injectors
I use nut drivers on little bolts like that. Learned that using the ratchet is too easy to break a small bolt the hard way!!!
Very true!
I love watching the repairs you get into
Another great vid! One end of the beast to the other! Keep the deere's running! Stay safe and warm
Thanks Zeth! What a job that was!👍
Yes it was!
You had a big leak. I work on isx15 engines all the time. I am a Cummins warranty certified. I have the paperwork to prove it. One thing to note. Before swapping the injectors check the torque of the high pressure fuel connectors that go into the block. I have seen so many come with a hard start and the fuel connector nuts are loose not hand loose but looser then the torque spec due to normal engine vibration.
Now when a injector is replaced it does fix the issue because the fuel tube has to be removed and re-installed. For your case the injectors could have been bad due to the bad fuel.
As a truck mechanic, it is so weird seeing that engine green and not red like in a truck
Looks way better green!
@ZKMasterTech does John Deere make an in-house engine?
@@dieselfixr They make a few engine in house. 13.5L with unit injectors, new 13.6L common rail, and a 18L common rail engine coming soon in 9RX tractors.
Good job guys great teamwork as always
Thanks 👍
Great job 👏
Packed in being Hgv fitter back in 99
Used to work on L10 and 14ltr Cummins
We always knocked the injectors ( think they had 3 O rings on them) in with an ally drift
Some folk used the clamps to seat them,
They ended up damaging the seals and causing issues
Good call!! Thanks!
Very interesting. Fuel technology is a far cry from where it started and its efficient, but most certainly brings much challenges.....and cost !
I’ve done 3 9570rt injector replacement. I ended replacing all injectors due to excessive return leakage all three jobs related to poor fuel quality. I’ve done that same test and when it’s hard to start you more times than not you have multiple injector failures. Also I use the flush kit SW10035BF
Good grief! That 9620R is a verrry expensive "fuel contamination sensor", haha. The customer might want to get their farm's diesel tank cleaned real good and throw some new hoses and extra filters on that. Also put a filter in the stationary tank's fill port and have a look at that after their next delivery to see if they need to have some words with their vendor.
That is was I was thinking. The cost of this problem is unbelievable. I doubt it was the fuel vendor BUT a potential weak point. More likely it was the farm and its management process. I would start there and then look at the fuel vendor. The fuel vendor should look up stream at his supplier. I would love to know what this bill ended up to be. Any guess? PM is almost always worth the cost.
@@toddhebel6048 $3400 per injector alone and that's just the beginning. I agree, more likely the farm got the dirt into the fuel, or more of their equipment would be on the fritz. Then again, the other machines might eat dirt sooner than later if they don't get on top of their fuel handling. It's unlikely to be the vendor, but when you're spending mid-five figures (at least?) on rebuilding the tractor then $100 for a filter on the bulk tank ain't gonna break the bank.
When torqueing with an offset make sure that you keep the offset 90 degrees to the torque wrench so that your straight line distance is the same. If offset is straight on torque wrench then your force applied is greater and you have over torqued it.
Just a great video Zeth ! Keep up the great work my Good Man 👍Lol
Thanks, will do!
Good to see another video !!!!!
Great job thanks for sharing
Reminds me of the 6130D I had to resurrect after sitting in a barn for 6 years... Whole system was varnish
I like what you doing and you verry well into your job and you know your stuff I really like the inspection video you did with Millennial farmer stuff you need to education Zak more he get frustrated when somthing goes wrong you need to take him Uber your wing and show him the proper way keep up the hard work I really enjoying your content
Good job master tech .smart individual you are .great video. Thanks for sharing .
Thanks for watching
Zeth und Josh ihr seit die Besten 🇨🇭😇
Zk you are the man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks!
Thanks so much for the great content! Could you do a video on how to do testing with multimeters and which ones you like and how to test.
Nice Vid!
The parts cannon is the expensive solution. 😊
Those injector feed tubes looked so bad wow. IDK why but these fuel systems seem like when the pump goes it lets too much unmetered fuel pressure into the rail and it always takes out the rear injectors. They will run decent on 3 cylinders though just FYI :)
This microbial contamination in the tank is called "diesel plague" here in Germany.
👌👌👌good job guys
Hi Zeth, could you do a video about how to adjust differential?
This problem is very interesting but it didn't stand a chance against the master
If the injector return flow test fails. Retorque hp connectors first. Cummins fuel filters have a plug that will not allow unfiltered fuel into clean side of filter if you prefill. Maybe th JD version doesn't have this. You threw every part in the fuel system at it, so I'd hope it's fixed.
The fuel connectors were tight. Forgot to mention that but that's a good advice.
Is there a credit for the old injectors when returned? Core charge?
Yes there is core.
31:31 if the spray pattern, on the injectors was affected. That would have an issue with it wouldn’t it?
Who pays that bill caused by a dirty fual tank. Is it worrenty work ???.PS keep up the good work, very good content.
$3,400 per injector. Uff da!
Water had probably sat for greater than 6 hrs likely caused sealing problems with the pintles Common rail injectors and water just don’t live together long 😅
I’m practically positive that this job is customer pay, as this is a 20 series tractor. I will await your response on the matter before I comment further
It’s not a 20 series, it’s a 9R
So, is it customer pay or warranty?
Why does it matter?
Not sure you want an answer to that
I am guessing all the crud was holding the injectors open??
If the injectors were dirty why more fuel. I guess it was back pressured in to the cup?
What are the part numbers for the Cummins tooling please ZK
No kidding 3400.00 each injector that takes a lean crop to a loss in a hart beat
hope they had ext warranty
3400 $ per injector !! Holy fire pants. That’s ceazy !!
It's a $100,000 engine. What do you expect? Lol
@@ZKMasterTech never been around 15liter common rail engines, great video and they cost what they cost, great diagnosis and that was the only way to repair it . I’ve bounced around a bit, from dealer to dealer. Had the most experience with cat. I was a field mechanic for Fabick, There largest common rail engine is the 9.3 and they run 700 ish plus quill tube and a fuel line , your at a grand. I also worked for
Martin the local John deer dealer . once again the largest common rail engine was the 9 liter, bout the same $, I was totally shocked on the price of those injectors. Im doing my own thing now, been working on smaller machines, the kubota v3400 injectors are 1200, bobcat same way 1200 bucks. All comes down to quality fuel management. Anyway great video 👍👍
What is your opinion on the 500hr service interval jd recommends ?
oh yeah ,,, rite there baby ! 😂
Just curios, is this a warranty job or did the customer have to pay? Does John Deere offer extended warranties and do you guys recommend them?
Hi Zeth
Random question,
Are you guys running John Deere plus 50 II oil in these cummins engines or oem cummins oil ?
I have just come across the Deere oil (I’m in road transport) and from what I can read on specs it’s bloody good engine oil.
Thanks mate
Yes we run Deere oil. It’s the best.
👍👍👍
I was really surprised at how clean the valve cavity was. Do they rebuild those injectors? Was that 5000 + on that engine ( i assume without an overhaul)? How expensive are those injectors?
Said $3500 usd each! X6 is about 21 grand
Great video Zeth! Do you have an of your ZK MasterTech hats for sale, I don’t see them in your store?
@davebullock3517 DM me on Instagram and I’ll get you one.
What cylinder wall look like
I realy agree Sir's, this is a very bad test result! You go next step! From Peter Eriksson CEO Falun Maskin Service Sweden Europe 😊😮😮!
How come deere puts Cummins in those tracs instead of their own engines??
please send me the serial number of the engine and tractor, because I am looking for a fuel pump in Europe quickly. I found it in John Deere but I want to compare the part numbers of Cumins and John Deere. I need the pump for Wirtgen WR 240i with a Cumins QSX CM 2250ECF engine.
I prefill my filters. I close the mittle port und let it fill from the outside. Was it worth to do the testing? It still takes a long time to test all injectors? Cheers from Switzerland.
$3400 per injector? Worth the check.
that was not for all the injectors? They can be that expensive. That would be a total rip off.@@JimWhitaker
Those Injectors could have been rebuilt for a fraction of the cost of new
How is the drained diesel fuel handled? Is it filtered and reused?
I would pump it though a big cartridge filter, treat, then reuse.
It gets burned in a oil burner for heat.
Injectors
WoW!!! Deere charges $3,400.00 per injector. The same injector direct from Cummins is $1,692.97 retail. That’s a $1,707.03 difference for the Deere part number sticker REC557952300 over 5579417PX injector part number on the box. LoL!!!
Interesting. They do give away those injections don’t they. 😮😢
Hello colleagues, you are doing a good job, but why didn't you wash the fuel rail?
Does this have a doser injector?
It should all isx15 has a 7th injector for aftertreatment.
@@dieselfixr wondering if it’s contaminated also
It’s called a crush tube not bullet
$22,000 in injectors. Wow.
How does one even start in this career? Being a car mechanic just isnt the deal.
Just go apply at a Deere dealership!
lol who knows what’s going on here. None of the volume measurements make sense. Including the one with the new injectors. All good boys she’s running anyway
Does the customer get billed for all the parts fitted that did not fix the problem? or is it just fodder for the parts cannon?
What parts didn’t fix the problem?
That’s what i was wondering 🤔
@@ZKMasterTech Did it need the HP fuel pump that was changed in the previous video?
@@Bristol_Jones did it start before the pump was installed? Also, is there a spec for high injector return while cranking?
it is this junk ass fuel of today i have had to change out injectors in my tractor
$3400 dollar injector. Are you f'ing kidding me. Total rip off. Okay, they look to be pretty top end parts but that is over the top.
