- Suroosh Alvi talks to the artist, activist and dissident Ai Wei Wei, who is in New York this week to open “Good Fences Make Good Neighbors” -- his monumental response to the global migration crisis, and his largest public exhibition to date. The 300 works were installed across New York City to coincide with the release of his film, Human Flow, which documents the mass displacement of people around the world. Suroosh Alvi met him on opening day in Central Park.

Nationalism in synonymous with sovereignty. Multiculturalism and sovereignty don't mix.
I suppose it could be. But a country with strong nationalism needn't be authoritarian nor intolerant of minorities. In the long term, multiculturalism either morphs into a monoculture or into separatism. Canada and Quebec are a good example of different cultures wanting different paths, and race wasn't a factor. Multiracialism (if that's a word) doesn't prevent cultural homogeny. If you're totally convinced that multiculturalism can't fail then google Yugoslavia.
Amazing talented compassionate artist. Interesting to see him being so humble & talked to the portrait artist on the exact spot in central park where he used to street paint in NYC.
