- Penn State vs Auburn was one of the headline games in College Football's week three, and on Late Kick Live Ep 304 Josh Pate spoke about the Nittany Lions topping the Tigers in a game that was well in hand by the start of the 4th quarter. With Sean Clifford withstanding a huge hit early and leading his team behind an incredible ground game, was this a sign to the rest of College Football that Penn State could be a force in the CFP conversation this season? How good can James Franklin and his team be? Bryan Harsin could have major problems on his hands at Auburn with no QB and seemingly very little hope against the gauntlet of a schedule still ahead. Auburn fans I mean this sincerely. I came down from Happy Valley and you all have an amazing environment, wonderful town and great people. I hope we can keep doing these big 10/sec crossover games, I think it’s good for the sport as a whole. Keep your heads up. Every program goes through trying times but with brands like PSU and Auburn they usually don’t last very long. Thanks again, hope to visit again someday.

It is amazing how hard Clifford got hit and then he never flinched. He continued to throw himself 100% into the game. On the trick play later where he caught a pass he could have gotten absolutely wrecked had some Auburn player blown that up but he executed with zero nerves.
Between not missing a beat after that massive hit, and his masterful last drive at Purdue- this kid is trying to rewrite his book this year, it’s impressive. Hope he can keep it yp

Penn state showed me something yesterday. They have a STABLE of young and legit running backs, a good defense that’ll continue to grow and be challenged throughout the year, and have showcased a consistent running game than can now open up the passing game. With Drew Allar developing and being handed the keys next year, their potential can be limitless.
They have a stable of athletes all over the field.

Auburn was 6-7 last year, 3-5 in conf. They imploded long ago.

I was at last year's whiteout against Auburn and met some gracious Auburn fans. I was told by one fan that the hospitality would be reciprocated should I travel to this year's game. He was true to his word. Auburn fans were very kind and helpful. I could see the pride they have for their school, their town and their traditions. I had a wonderful time in Auburn and look forward to when we can meet again one day.
I told ya Josh, you got burned in Auburn previously and hence you went with your emotions over logic in picking Auburn. This Penn State team is legit and unless they implode, i see at least a 10 win season and the ceiling is a CFP spot.

The alarming thing for AU was that their defensive line got pushed around by a much maligned PSU offensive line, which has been the achilles heel of that team for years. Singleton and Allen are definitely a big part of that because they run aggressively and have a burst but they were also running through some holes. AU is in trouble against that brutal SEC schedule.
I'm a fan and biased, but the PSU team is looking good. Clifford is finally in the appropriate "game manager" role now and the they have Allar to come in and start slinging it if game management doesn't cut it. (It was a 14 - 6 game at halftime and the ball bouncing another way on that Clifford fumble could have easily been a scoop and score. Credit to Clifford to shaking it off but we could have seen a very different game if it was 7 - 13 after two.)
Diaz is aggressive as DC and PSU has enough athletes to live or die taking risks. They don't have a dominant player but they're overall a fast and swarming group.

Penn State had an 11-win season the last time he had a run game and decent O-line in 2019, that's definitely in the cards this year
Part of the negative to Clifford's game in the past two years has been absolutely related to having no run game. He has had to try and do it all, and that's never been feasible. If he doesn't have to do that, it should make his season much better.

Slow down, dude. Penn State starts hot like this almost every year, and almost always crashes at some point. They lose a very winnable game by giving up a 4th quarter lead, then stumble down the stretch. Of course that may not happen this year, but we should all know better than to get our hopes way up about this team after week 3.
I will however agree that Penn state makes the cfp at least every other year once it expands.

Love your point about physical development of the PSU guys. If you pay attention to the NFL combine the past 5 or 6 years you've no doubt seen that play out. Thinking of guys like apke, saquon , gesicki ,
Strength and conditioning just got an overhaul this past off-season. Dwight Galt retired and his number two Chuck Losey took over. He's apparently made a huge difference. Also, 17 true freshman played in that game, and the third string played. We should've hung 50. The youth movement is in full effect. The boys from state college are gonna be scary next year.

For a team that plays in white outs all the time, they understand what to expect with that kind of environment. So, the orange out was nice and all but.....ask Herbie about what a whiteout is like. There is a huge difference.

Truly don’t want to take anything away from Penn St. They crushed auburn, but I also don’t think people are giving enough credit to how bad and poorly coached this auburn team is. Harsin is a complete failure. They’re receiving Corp is on par with vandy, if not worse. They brought calzada in to win the job and he’s behind both these guys! You hear coaches talk about making teams quit early and when the team already with a severe talent gap quits early it gets this ugly

Another point is that I think they thought we were going fold early. Pretty young team (except for the qb) yeah ... theyre gonna collapse. SEC teams hype themselves as something that hovers above us all. I guess that's not always true.
I know, how many times have we heard from fans of SEC schools, "Team X is the 6th best SEC team but they'd go undefeated in the Big Ten!" Gimme a break. Arkansas barely survives against FCS Missouri State and yet they're in the top ten?! A&M loses to App State and is still ranked? Florida has look terrible and barely beats a USF team with only 4 wins in three years and they're still ranked? And people claim there is no SEC bias!

I was one of the few before the season defending Harsin and beating the drum we need to give him more time. I still think that but after that **** show I'm afraid Josh is right about it being inevitable now. The most frustrating for me watching the game is how PSU dominated both lines of scrimmage. I actually believed the preseason talking points that our OL had gotten bigger, stronger, & better, NOT!!! And AU "always" has a good DL, I think they just got tired from being on the field so much at I hope that's the case.
It's going to be a looong season.

Psu should be ranked higher. I find it funny...out of conference beats an SEC team...excuse, "well that sec team isn't any good this year". Result: low ranking. Sec team beats sec team, "I mean c'mon! It's the sec, it just means more!" Result: top 12 ranking. Well duh the sec looks better. The committees are all propping up the sec!

In general under Pry and currently with Diaz PSU will give up a decent amount of yards but not a lot of points. Their box score is usually a little deceiving.
Didn't get it done in the red zone, turnovers, and a few big plays by Singleton at PSU. I don't agree with the snap assessment that they were terrible or dominated. PSU is talented and everything that could have gone wrong for AU did.
Years of Gus getting zero top offensive lineman recruits and hiring another loser.

I don't think you should fire a coach after a year and 3 games especially after his 1st year was sabotaged by boosters etc..I also understand 2 bad years can set a program back by 5 years. Brian Harrison is doing to auburn what coach o did to lsu last year and he had to go. Whoever the next coach is deserves a chance to coach without auburn politics but the mess he'll be cleaning up isn't a 2 year fix.

I would love to hear Bryan Harsin's side of the story in re guard to what he has to put up with out of Auburn and all those people that matter. Too many chiefs and not enough Indians!! It's sad to me because i believe the guy is a good coach but that's the world today; get a divorce if someone in the relationship is unhappy and go on to the next one. I am an Auburn fan and I would not have touched Auburn unless I was getting at least 10 points. Josh sort-of hit on the problem, Auburn has shown ZERO explosiveness on offense last year and so far this year. Auburn has three transfer qb's and has come close to recruiting zero offensive linemen the last two years after pitiful offensive line recruiting the two years before that. You don't go up against a good team with no offense and give away four turnovers and hope to keep it close.

Absolutely!! In 2013 1st yr coach MALZAHN took the 3 win team from 2012 to the National Championship game and almost won, leading with only 14 seconds left in 4th quarter!!! It took a Heisman QB to pull out the victory with a few seconds left in the game.

There's 4 SEC teams that won or played for multiples national championships in the last 13 years and Auburn is one of them. Auburn is the first team to ever beat 2 #1 teams in a single season in 2017 and if it wasn't for injuries they could've possibly made the playoffs that year. If your team isn't either Georgia, Alabama, Auburn or LSU, you can't really talk that much due to the fact those 4 teams has played for multiple national championships in the last 13 years. Auburn won their division twice after the Cam year and Auburn was the closest team to beating 2019 LSU team in Death Valley. Comparing Vanderbilt to Auburn in the past 2 decades is irrationally bias. Auburn has 4 losing seasons in 23 years,it would only be 2 if it wasn't for the Harsin Era.Vanderbuilt has 21 losing seasons in 23 years.Most SEC teams has more losing records than Auburn in the last 23 years. His recruiting class is in the toilet as well. Harsin is a pompous, lazy coach. He doesn't like to recruit and believes recruits should just come to him as he did at Boise St. That was the knock against him while he was at Boise St. The top Mormon kids are going to go to BYU, Utah, or Boise St. then all a coach has to do is bring in a few Washington or California kids to be competitive and end up with an 8-3 record or better. Not so in The SEC. First Auburn has to hire a competent AD that is willing to put up with the crap that goes along with the job from meddling boosters and then find a decent coach that understands SEC football and the new age of NILs in recruiting. Good luck in all of those endeavors. I see 3-4 down years for Auburn at least even with the transfer portal.
