In the summer of 1973 I was very lucky to get a summer job at the large McDonnell Aircraft plant at the St Louis airport working on the very first blocks of the then-brand new F-15 (center fuselage aft). At the time, the plant was being shared with new production of F-4 Phantoms for the German Air Force. It was quite interesting to see the two new planes side by side. As an aside, the replica of the 'Spirit of St Louis' used in the movie starring James Stewart was stored at one of the McDonnell hangars at the time and it was interesting to walk out there are see an F-15, another F-15, an F-4, the Spirit of St Louis, an F-15 …..
I do the same thing with the SR-71 Blackbird. They look fairly small in pictures, but when you see one in person, you're reminded of the fact that they're 18.5 feet tall from the ground to the top of the rudders, and about 107 feet long as well
It looks like an E-model got painted which is actually appropriate. The P-47 got tasked more and more with ground attack as the war wore on even though according to records it probably broke the back of the Luftwaffe even before the P-51 became the dominant 8th Air Force Fighter in World War II. The P-47 was an excellent fighter-bomber, better in ground attack than the P-51 and infinitely more survivable if it got hit since it had A) an air-cooled engine and B) didn't have a vulnerable liquid-cooled coolant system.
*Avengerll* If you haven't seen this series you can't claim you're a friend of the P-47. It would be cool if the F-15 is called the Flying Heritage. Because it's the oldest moddern Amarican jet fighter since the early 1960s. And I love the aircraft because of the shape and the looks to it, even the weaponry it carried. So beautiful.
The ONLY F-15 in the original Air Superiority Blue color scheme is on display at Luke AFB. It also happens to be the first operational F-15 received by the USAF back in Nov 1974.
The F-15 really is a beauty. She looks so lean and classic. I really prefer the grey color scheme over the blue one. I am German and the Luftwaffe has nothing like it. We have old Panavian Tornados and the overpriced and, compared to the F-22 and Rafale, underperforming Eurofighter. Gretings from Germany.
It's a lot of work. The guy who was one of the leads on this project painted a small scale model the same paint job and I believe it took him months (mainly because there were a lot of other things he had to do)

Here in the Netherlands we have a situation with ex military personnel who painted tanks and airplanes with a certain kind of paint that contains chrome-6. Now years later, many of them come up with cancer, sadly. Same with people who were unemployed and were on social benefits. To keep those benefits, government made them sand trains that were painted with the same kind of paint. You can guess what happened to them. Hope these people here were safe enough.
asbestos and lead base paint in the usa military was used during the 50' and up to early 90's ,im a second generation body man and painter my self everything in this video is up to regulation main important respiratory and protective gear spray booth is on point 👍
The Navy and the Marine Corps adhere to the engineering standard of treating "paint" as a corrosion control system issue. As long as the corrosion control system is functioning then don't waste time painting. The USAF is much more worried about "pretty" paint.
Yes. Most fighters have them. They have portable arresting systems that can allow a fighter like an F-15 to land on a short runway if necessary during wartime. Also, most fighter bases have arresting gear at the end of the runway to stop a jet from accidentally going off the end of the runway if it lands long or has brake problems.
great video! Currently work on Navy aircraft but I noticed that the F-15 has a tailhook. Why? The AF has a luxury of long runways but I'm not sure (and doubt) that most Air Force pilots are carrier qualified. I also noticed lack of restraints for those working on top of the jet, my facility has crazy requirements for those on top (for good cause)....just sayin!!
All F-15s have tailhooks. They are of a different design that those used for naval aircraft, and the F-15 does not have the structural strength in the landing gear (among other limitations) for naval use. Air Force jets' tallhooks are for use in emergency landings or short field operations.

@@gregoryboyek622 military bases have "over run gear" at the ends of their runways for things like brake failures, etc. If you landed a airforce bird, f15, f16, on a carrier, well, you could do it once. Most likely never again. Check out the gear of carrier designed aircraft like the F4, A7, F14, F18, etc., built for some SERIOUS stresses.
It's for emergency use and as a way to tether the aircraft when running up the engines for maintenance/testing. Quite a number of US airbase runways have a hidden arrestor cable for emergency use. You'll note the F-16, 22, 35 and 117 also have tail hooks as well for this reason. I'm not sure how they'd go landing on a carrier deck though, I would imagine the airframe and landing gear would need a serious inspection if one was to land and survive the landing on a carrier. Carrier AC have a significantly over engineered LG, airframe and tailhook as they slam the deck pretty hard, verses an air force AC which usually touch down much more gently. Just compare the nose gear on a Hornet versus an Eagle or a Viper!
1 to 3 days to strip off the old and mask. 2 days to 4 days to paint. 1 to 3 days to put decals on. 4 days to 10 days. Humidity and temperature are significant variables.
Yes, it's common for air force jets to have tail hooks. Primarily used in emergency landing situations (some runways have arrester cables) and to secure the aircraft during engine tests under maintenance. Probably the most famous use of this was when an Israeli F-15 managed to lose a wing in a mid air collision during a training exercise. The pilot was able to stabilize the plane by increasing airspeed and had to land at double the normal landing speed which is where these cables and tail hooks served their purpose.
Most fighters have tail hooks, even land based birds like the F-15 & F-16, so they can use portable arrestor gear to land on bomb damaged or too short runways. Not intended to launch or recover from aircraft carriers.
That's an old bird . you look at modern sukoys and migs that you realize how primitive our aircraft are at this point. not too dissimilar from Russian designs but our Military contractors stopped after the original iterations of our aircraft. Over the time normal modifications of systems but not of the entire plane and integrating developments such as canards thrust vectoring and further developing engines and aerodynamics and control systems applied to those different factors which it all combined to be a super maneuverable aircraft such as Russia produces now. instead America spends untold amount on developing old ideas or completely new aircraft platforms which are untested and will take decades to make serviceable and in the end it's really not a design that could be carried on and improved on such as the f-35 disaster. The f-35 is the most expensive military design failure in modern history. It cost more than the Manhattan project, more than the entire Apollo space program, and we will be paying for it out in two generations of our children for an aircraft which is not competitive or combat ready or survivable . Americans try to reinvent the wheel when it comes to aviation. The Russian idea of design is to perfect something until it is perfect that's why they are so successful in the world of aviation building planes with no other aircraft can copy its maneuvers or match its flight envelope. No doubt a good design and a beautiful bird just an old one.
