How I make realistic plank floors in Blender.
There’s a problem with procedural textures: They’re never quite realistic.
There’s a problem with image textures: They’re not flexible.
There’s a technique that combines the two and gets the best of both worlds. This workflow uses that. It takes high-quality images of plank textures and maps them procedurally in a plank pattern. You get to design the floor yourself while maintaining the realism of photos.

▶️ KEY TAKEAWAYS ◀️
🔹 Mixing procedural techniques with scans is a powerful way to make convincing yet flexible textures.
🔹 Avoid completely hard lines. They look too digital.
🔹 Use clearcoat to add a shiny wax layer.
🔹 Clearcoat should be exempt from high-frequency bump.

Well, you could read my blog. I have a few articles about 3D and creativity at robinruud.com. Enjoy. - Кино
Finally someone who knows what they are doing instead of throwing noise/voronoi/color ramp at everything and call it procedural. 😇
I mean, that would still be procedural but yeah I completely get you
Ducky?
@marcd7332 dudes got half a million subs, I think you're the one missing something bud
Renaming the texture files allows you to do a random UDIM lookup approach with a single image node. I use this for office monitor content all the time. Random mirroring and blending multiple lookups using noise patterns is also a great way to make repeat use less obvious.
Your videos are so high quality! You also share alot of tips that bigger channels dont! 10/10
As always, amazing high-quality results!
Nice plank node and thanks for the free textures !
This is so good! A gem for the blender community
That's some high attention to detailed right there, insta subscribed. Thanks for sharing
AMAZING
Clear and consistent, weirdly therapeutic, yay!
Best $10 I've spent in a while
So much of this is completely chinese to me, but I love everything! After sleeping 19 hours straight because of Jetlag, this was for sure the perfect way to enjoy a sleepless night with some Chai Latte that expired yesteryear
Thoughts from one that has laid several floors:
For both walls, roofs, subflooring and some visible flooring, carpenters will often lay out the visible planks so the ends of all of them meet directly above a stud in the framework. This is most common in walls and roofs however (which I now realize technically has nothing to do with this video). At the same time, carpenters are never 100% consistent, so the opportunity to randomize exactly where the floors join is indeed very satisfying. If 100% realism is for some reason desired, then I'd recommend keeping this variation within 1 or 1.5 inches since most studs around the world are roughly 2 inches wide.
In the vein of real-looking floors I only missed one thing. You talked about how the wood might cup or bend over the surface (which I love that you include), but wood flooring will also warp a lot along the edges of each plank. Sometimes this is because of the cupping which you mentioned, and how it pulls the corners of the wood up. Other times it's visible over the longer side of the plank where differences in moisture make the wood bulge out and push on neighboring planks, or it could contract and make the groove between planks more visible. I think adding this as a variable would help make the flooring even more realistic.
In any case this very much keeps up the tradition of A+ quality. Looking forward to the sequel where you make the wood flooring realistically break the laws of physics like you did with that lamp
"This is Chinese to me" he says, and goes on to demonstrate that he is fluent in Chinese. Excellent input. I'll pin your comment to the top.
I used Erindale's tutorial to make the herringbone pattern but I'm working ton to make it fully procedural by making one wood texture that can be customized in to all types of archviz wood
would you be able to render into a uv texture for using the texture in unity? cause that'd be so useful cause this looks awesome!
You could probably modify this workflow to work like that, but I would really recommend Substance Designer for that. You don't even need to buy it; people have made infinite numbers of procedural plank generators that you can open with the free software Substance Player, and export as a UV texture.
Once I make the floor that I want, how do I get it into a scene I created in another file?
Ctrl+C to copy from one scene, open another Blender, Ctrl+V to paste.
Absolutely going to buy the full version, this is an impressive setup! Are there any restrictions on what we can use it for, like commercial projects and the like?
No, no, you pay money for it you can use it for whatever you want. The Dinesen textures are also CC0 - use them however you like.
@@robinsquares Gotcha, thanks so much!
@@robinsquares Life saver.
it doesn't work with Blemder 4.0 Cycles render with pattern type lower 2.5 (black object in a rendered shading mode) how can I fix that?
Thanks for telling me. Seems to be a bug with complex shader trees. I've fixed it and sent out an email to everyone who bought it.
I also have the issue and just bought the addon@@robinsquares.
How can I fix it ? I tried your v02 Change tips but still the same issue or maybe I've done something wrong. I use Blender 4.0
@@Baky.dia75 Do you get the error when you just open the v02 file and make no change?
@@robinsquares Thank you so much, it works
No, only on my project files@@robinsquares, do you know what could be the problem?
first
to be honest buggy, not close to realism u have to touch it a lot but it's something u can do with floor generator for free... i wasted 12 € definitely not reccomended
im very demotivated haha but i will make it :determined_face
