great to hear the Kermode talk about the prestige. the most underrated movie of ALL TIME which requires repeat viewings. I've seen the flick literally about 30 times and each time I learn something new about the movie, like michael caine says " Now you're looking for the secret. But you won't find it because of course, you're not really looking. You don't really want to work it out. You want to be fooled". This movie cemented nolan as a proper director. then inception helped his legacy
Yeah, the whole Keyser Soze thing fell a bit flat, didn't it? I mean I really wanted to like this film - and the opening tricks raised my expectations - but I actually wound up being quite annoyed by the time the credits rolled.
I think the reason a lot of us prefer Jesse Eisenberg over Michael Cera is because he can do both meek and confident convincingly ... like a good actor.
It was truly dissapointing. And the camera work - gaaah! All the spinning and 45 degree angle almost gave me a migraine. And it could have been such a good movie...
besides, michael cera portrays meek convincingly...like a good actor. Just because he gets typecast occasionally does not mean that he's a bad actor. Quite the opposite, in fact. He also has fantastic delivery in his more comedic roles.
I watched this for the first time yesterday... and dear god this review is bang on target! This film promises so much and has nothing to offer at all. Like a really bad magician it's all show but has no actual tricks...
I quite liked the score and would say its a totally different film to the prestige, just a bit of fun without being too terrible, the jumping off the roof bit was daft.
What makes Now You See Me particularly bad is the lack of magic. I can't imagining Penn and Teller going into a rage over tricks that are simply camera tricks instead of actual tricks. Without giving away a spoiler, I'm particularly annoyed with the whole set-up premise that looks like it was set up only to fool YOU instead of making a somewhat believable story.
I'd say they're both good actors, though it is true that Jesse Eisenberg's had the opportunity to showcase his versatility a lot more than Michael Cera, particularly with "Social Network", but i'm hoping "Magic Magic" will allow us to see a different side to Cera.
The problem with Michael Cera is that he's usually casted as someone like Michael Cera.I do think Micheal Cera has a couple of more impressive titles than Jesse Eisenberg(some of my favourites anyway).
Saw this last night, and was a bit disappointed. I thought the acting was quite good, but it just seemed like the filmmakers had first worked out a bunch of "cool" tricks - then spent the rest of the film trying to make a plot from it.
Its a perfectly solid piece of entertainment. A good seven out of ten. Good way to spend an evening with enough to it to keep one interested. Never seen the Prestige which may have helped.
I thought it looked rather forced Nolanish in the first place,so I kind off wanted this movie to be bad(Nolan is rather holy to me so he shouldn't be ripped off). I was incredibly happy to hear Mark say "the Prestige for stupid people".
Came very close to all out arguing with a family friend over this film, can't believe anybody likes seeing a gmynast/parkour runner take on role of camera operator. And jesus did I hate all the impossible tricks.
I wasn't really interested in watching this, but I was bored and it was on Netflix, so... The review is spot on. NYSM is a movie that sets itself up as a Prestige set in the modern day, but ends up just being a flashy piece of CGI-driven multiplex fodder with no real depth. The performances from Freeman, Caine, and to some extent Ruffalo are okay, but they're playing parts that they could have done in their sleep. A major problem is that none of the characters are developed in any way. Woody Harrelson and Isla Fisher are practically anonymous and Jesse Eisenberg is simply annoying. He does that twitchy fast-talking schtick in every movie he's in, and it's just irritating. The strength of the Prestige was that the whole thing was highly ambiguous, so even when the final twist was revealed, you still don't really know the secret (I've read furious debates only as to what "really" happened in the movie). NYSM's big reveal is a bit crap and essentially undermines everything that led up to it. Kind of like the big vegas trick at the start of the movie - it looks really impressive, but turns out to be kind of mundane once you take away all the smoke and mirrors. Oh, and can someone please tell Louis Leterrier that there are better ways at making a movie exciting that just constantly swooping the camera around?
NYSM is an enjoyable romp, and in the great tradition of con-movies from The Sting through Oceans 11. It owes nothing to Christopher Nolan-it has a sense of humour. Inception is Oceans 11 for people who read Penguin Modern classics at A level. And didn't understand.
The film’s well acted, intriguing & effective, however the film’s direction, writing & pacing are very serious issues that the film suffers from. (45%) (2/5 stars) (mixed)
Now You See Me is better than The Prestige. The Prestige didn't work for me as well because it turns into a science fiction. And I love the twists and turns. I love how the movie starts off as a heist movie and then turns into a revenge movie. Mark Ruffalo is excellent in it. Admittedly, he's the only character who has any real development, but it worked for me.
It's worth checking out The Prestige!
5:55 good poker face there Mark!!

it is the 7 of diamonds - mayo got it right
Mayo actually got the card right on his second guess, which is incredible

Nobody quite like Mark Kermode,He's wonderful.
It was the 7 dimonds

The Jack-Of-Diamonds-Blues-reference surely isn't that obscure, is it?
But Mayo was making a Penn & Teller reference first, though. Right?

He already said he wasn't going to say what it was though, so he wouldn't have said yes.
youth in revolt, scott pilgrim and this is the end are all rather well made films that have convincing portrayals of over-confidence in them.
Now I've got to go watch Best In Show. Peanut, pine nut....
great review

Why was this approved?
it's really not that complex. what brilliant subtlety did you notice after your 30th viewing? nolan drones are the worst.
Really enjoyable movie if you just accept it for what it is. Not so much The Prestige, more like Fast and Furious with magicians.

But it's clearly NOT The Prestige. It's a caper movie! It's like saying Oceans 11 is rubbish because it's not Casino.
Couldn't agree more, one word for this movie, bland
