- The third installment of my 1956 Willys Jeep rebuild series. I tear the old frame down to the axles, and then tear the axles down. The front axle is a Dana 25, rear is a Dana 44.

I redid the axles in my XJ years back. To spread the case on the Dana 30 I made a tool out of (2) 2x3/8" flat bar bolted to two cover bolts on each side of the carrier. Then welded a 2" long piece of pipe with a 5/8 ID on the ends of the flat bar. Put a piece 5/8 all thread with nuts against each 'spreader bar' and crank the nuts out to spread the case. I was able to build it entirely out of scrap I had laying around.
It's really rewarding seeing a piece of rusty steel transformed to look brand new after a few cuts. I really enjoy your videos, cheers.

Good morning gentleman, ,about two years ago I did almost exactly what you're doing, a 1980 CJ 5 was completely disassembled for 20 years, most of it was rusted to the point no return, we bought most of the parts new, we put it back together again with a 360 wagoneer engine, that toy became almost like new, at my 70 years of age I was feeling like a kid with a new toy, I enjoyed every second of it, that toy runs like a feader in the wind, congratulations on this endeavor of yours, my most expressive thanks for you video, blessings to you and love ones, from the endless summer paradise Puerto Rico Jesus Torres

Unless you count the XJ I had in high school, it is actually. But the same concepts that apply to old machine tools apply to old cars too.

I remember a while back I asked what mill you had in a video comment. I was patient for about a year and finally found a Index model 40 mill like yours at a local auction. Of course, I bought it. I am glad I waited and passed up a ton of Chinese mills. The mill is the perfect size for a garage shop while still being very ridgid. It has a power down feed and had the power table option at one point although it is missing from the worm screw on the table onward. I still need to make room in my garage next to my other vintage Southbend Heavy 10 lathe. I will tear into it and deep clean before I try to operate it. And figure out If I want to make the 3 phase motor work or swap a single phase motor. Anyways I am patiently awaiting your rebuild of your Index model 40 in the future. So Mr pete or "Tubalcain" made me buy a Southbend lathe and now Jeremy from Jeremy Makes Things made me buy a Index Mill.
Awesome. Mine has the two speed three phase motor on it, I wired a VFD to the windings for the faster speed, and I’m using the original barrel switch to select between high and low speeds via the drive- and then I realized there’s a middle position on the switch as well, so I set that up for a medium speed. Mine is also missing most of the table powerfeed, at some point I’ll adapt a servo-style feed to it.
Paint and assembly are always way more fun than disassembly an cleaning.

EarlyCJ5, McGruff offers a bell crank upgrade. Look into it. Definitely a small improvement.
It got my goat every time some dsmn Dart or Valiant or the lime would come in and you had to counteract all your habit force to remove/reinstall the drivers side.
They had quit that crap before 73, I know because my Duster was a 73 and thank God it was normal
Pretty cool to see how much different the rear differential and axel were back then.
I expected there would be some marking on the rear axle when you showed the loose nut. The keys that locate the hubs have a specific shape on the inner end and important to get that right when you re-assemble. Looks like someone put new rear shoes in it.

I'm working on a '61 rebuild now (my first) and will move on to a '50 next. Really interesting to see your process. I'm sure I'll return to this video again.
Great to follow a project like this with ~weekly updates instead of monthly or quarterly. I'm Excited to see this vehicle drive again with an electric drive train

i build a firer in each 1 with diesel fuel let burn for 15 mit and use a block of wood to but out the fire stay with the burn out and then use the block of wood and drive down the piston

LOL I have a '50 Willys Pickup with a stuck engine, but it is a 1928 Hudson 6 as far as I can tell. Would rather rebuild yours. Can't afford either though. ;)
If that CJ5 rolled out of Toledo Assembly, most of my family built that vehicle.
I just had a brilliant idea, we could get in touch with Mr. Ballard (Titanic) and see if we could salvage the pilot house off the Titanic and replace the hard top on the jeep with it.
I think an air hammer would have came in handy knocking that thing apart. Nice work so far.

I know where there are thousands of brand new jeeps of that era that were pushed off into the ocean. My uncle was a jet pilot trainer back in the 50's and 60's for the air force I think. Anyway he watched them drive and push thousands of surplus jeeps off of an aircraft carrier into the ocean south of Corpus Christi. I've often wondered if any of them would be worth salvaging.

Here's hoping you'll find something that Jeep needs that you can machine. Preferably out of something you dug out of a river. Preferably on the shaper.
The next Jeep video will have some machining. (Beyond having to make adapters for pullers).

Thanks! Like your rebuilds. Your Jeep But, that engine might run with a good clean up! Hone the cylinders, reseat the valves, Etc;. Electric vehicles are a passing Fad. Tesla is shifting to Hydrogen. Its your Jeep! Have fun! Not being sarcastic. Ron PTL USA
You stated that your going to convert this to electric, I assume you magnet fished an old tesla experiment needing a little refurbishment from the bottom of lake Michigan during a blizzard that took the Edmund Fitzgerald. I'm expecting an original tesla hood ornament or I think this whole experience will be entirely disappointing. But we can all look through a rose colored windshield from time to time. I hear there are still a few lost steam boat wrecks on the Mississippi, that could yield some interesting and needed parts.

When using the 6 sided collet block, how do you calulate the depth of the first cut when the stock is still round?
Take some off one side, flip it 180, take another cut, measure and adjust. If you watch closely, you’ll see as I rotate it around, one side already has a flat on it.
You can also touch off the top of the stock and then lower the endmill the calculated amount.

If you restore this jeep to it's original configuration and color you will thank your self later. Also the jeep will be infinitely more valuable than some other nonsense.

Not going to put your fingers under it , but how many times will your head be their ?
It would have been faater to just torch all the U bolts they should never be reused.
Why waste the time on that engine. Although, it might make a great rebuild project for some high schools shop,class, or tech school.
You could dump in a kabota diesel tractor engine in it😁.they work good in old jeeps👍
The best oil to put into the engine to clean it is hydraulic oil used in heavy earth moving equipment escavator hydraulic oil it will strip rust dirt carbon just use the oil can be old oi soloing as it is clean soak the howhole engine in it opening every hole only needto be in there a couple of weeks
