    MORE ABOUT THE BEGINNER'S GUIDE:
The Beginner's Guide is a narrative video game from Davey Wreden, the creator of The Stanley Parable. It lasts about an hour and a half and has no traditional mechanics, no goals or objectives. Instead, it tells the story of a person struggling to deal with something they do not understand.

This story seems like a work of fiction. I think Coda was creating games as a therapeutic exercise entirely for himself. He shared his games with the narrator because he thought the narrator would benefit from it. But it became an unhealthy obsession for the narrator. The narrator was projecting his own feelings on the work and misinterpreting what they actually meant for Coda. Coda stopped making the games and distanced himself from the narrator when he realized what it was doing to the narrator. Coda never needed the narrator's help. It is the narrator who is lonely and depressed, not Coda. Not all loners are lonely. What's healthy and good for one person is poison for someone else. The narrator was obsessed with fixing something that wasn't broken when it was the narrator who was the one who was broken.

The way the narrator ended it makes me believe this is a fictional story, which isn't to say it loses any meaning in the telling of it. I think it is a really interesting perspective on creators and consumers and how they relate to one another, and really explores that dynamic in an interesting and powerful way. I love a good thought-provoking game :)

      I think so too
Most people that play through this game begin to question if it's fiction towards the end or soon after
I think this is by design and part of a message the game is trying to convey
The narrator spends a significant amount of time talking about himself and Coda with grounded ideas that lead us to believe that it's real, this is crucial for delivering the impact of the reveal towards the end
As you said, I don't think it takes away from any of the messaging of experiences that players had. Glad you enjoyed it, truly an incredible game :)

The narrative of this game is a work of fiction, it isn't meant to be taken literally.
It's a story that the developer came up with to convey his mixed emotions following the success of his other game (The Stanley Parable).
It's still a powerful story and one of the most unique interactive experiences I've encountered, but yeah, for those of you who felt a little bit lost at the end, it was basically a twist ending.
If it were real, there would be some serious legal action taken against this guy, think about it.

@MrPeace Guy well if you realise the whole game was fiction then it becomes alot easier to realise that it is a narrative and not a run by run commentary of going insane, which would be rather hard to do on top of the coding work involved in development. Davey did this project mostly on his own and was just coming off the back of Stanley Parable which caused him a lot of issues in his personal life. Consider this game to be therapy for him and an insight into the creator (though I would be less literal about how you recieve that information, otherwise you become the narrator character in the game who is reading too much into what is just a game)

People are puzzles. Life is a puzzle. The universe is a puzzle. A puzzle so big and complex that we may never ever truly understand or complete. We could dedicate our entire lives trying to solve it, we could try and find shortcuts or different approaches and routes, we could even unintentionally make it more and more complex through obsession/addiction. With its twists and turns, narrow paths and wide walls, and everpresent feelings of quick misdirection, somber curiosity, and a need for freedom/liberation, it's easy for one to be eaten alive by its enigmatic nature, incarcerating your vision and sense of self preservation for the sake of instant gratification.
It's not always about the solution, but about the experience; this can be difficult to accept, but it needs to be celebrated and embraced for the sake of art in and of itself and for the sake of the human condition.
It's ok to not have the solution. It's ok to not understand something. It's ok to be curious. But sometimes, we just need to accept the fact that we may never have the answer. Sometimes, we just need to live and let live. Another puzzle.
Wow. What a brilliant game. The analysis and interpretations were so fascinating! I loved the abstract imagery, the way the color pallets were used, and the overall atmosphere! So profound. Shout out Riley for recommending this feels trip! I'll definitely be watching this again multiple times because I was so enthralled with this! Loved this longer let's play, Kat 🔥

Games that Coda made for himself and Davey change the games just to fit his narrative. In his mind he transferred his own problems to Coda and at the end of the game Davey realize that is his problems.

I agree with you it does say that and what they are saying is the exact opposite, but again doesn't really matter because what you read from a piece of art is just yours.
If this person, if these people, got something out of this art than that in and of itself is enough. That's all you can really do, the time as passed to change their mind on it, they will never see your comment.

@@vortexwriting1026 First of all death of the author in such a concrete sense is just stupid. The author always has a say. But in this particular situation, with the story this game is telling, one of them at least. Thinking like this can actually end up being bad. Davey was the villain, he hurt Coda because he thought that he needed to be helped, and fiction or not that is a very real thing. Understanding that what you think someone is feeling may not be accurate is more important than your right to artistic interpretation.

Nobody is probably watching this video anymore as traffic has died down, but after watching it all the way through I feel like this needs said.
I first saw this game on Jacksepticeye's channel, where I watched it through on a whim. I hadn't anticipated how much it would hurt. So much so that by the end I was considering pointing one of the handguns we owned at my head. I later did exactly that. This video was the first time something had sent me past dark thoughts and actually made me almost commit to something I had once thought was never my path. But for a few seconds I held a gun to my head, at night, no tears or any real thought. I just stood there. When I pulled the trigger nothing happened, the gun wasn't loaded and I didn't check it. This was a couple years ago.
Fast forward to now, where I questioned if I should even attempt another watch. I can say that I have grown since then. Where I once thought of all my failures I thought of how I got past them. In fact, seeing how well I handled this gave me some perspective I wouldn't thought was possible those years back.
I can get better. Huh, now ain't that cathartic to say.

When they played through the first several games, I was thinking about how I would have done it different. Like, in The Great and Lovely Descent, I thought about how I would probably look down, then on purpose jump off the edge and watch the bottom rush up to meet me.
Then I thought about how I've done that a lot in games. If I'm playing something, if there are no real-world consequences to my movement, I will and have jump off an edge, or run straight into danger, and sort of roleplay or pretend to commit suicide that way. But only when there's no consequences. Sometimes I watch horror movies to see if they can scare me for the same reasons.
And all of a sudden, I thought, why do I do that? Why would I take the opportunity to move anywhere I want in a consequence-free 3D space, and use it to rush myself over a cliff?
I didn't realize I had that in me. I had to think about the answer I would give if someone asked me why I wanted to die. But I don't want to die; most of the time I'm thinking about how to survive, the next five minutes, the next day, the next week.
I don't know if any of this is even real. I do know that I have written suicide attempt scenes into stories I've written for years, and that I do this with games. I've been depressed before, and had anxiety issues and panic attacks. But I didn't know really that I had that inside me, suicide.
When I thought about it, I prayed, and I told God I was sorry I had it in me, crying. Which I don't think is my fault, that's like saying you're sorry you're sick with a cold or something.
I'm very scared of suicide. To me it feels like a virus, a dangerous idea that sets out to infect and kill its host. Like something that needs to be eradicated to ensure you stay healthy. And I guess in a sense it is, it is a dangerous idea.
Maybe we don't have to be afraid of it, though, because we have it. We don't need to worry about catching the infection, we are already infected. Now the challenge is to not give in, to live anyway. And maybe I need to get some help and talk to some professional to make sure I can do that, and I bet you do, too.

Hey squad! This episode was recommended by squad member Riley on Patreon who suggested we play The Beginner's Guide because of its beautiful story. When I filmed this episode it was around the time of my major burn out so this game couldn't have come at a better time for me. If you are passionate about something never allow it to "own you". What I mean is enjoy and love the work you do and don't continuously doubt yourself or your abilities. NEVER overwork yourself to the point of quitting on something you love and always go into your work with an open mind and heart. Sometimes we can be our worst critics, but we also need to realize that we are enough. I love you squad, and only want what's best for you. If you are struggling with this know that over time you will find the light at the end of your dark tunnel. And it all will be okay.

Not only that, he TAMPERED with someone else's creative work to tell a narrative that was never there to begin with. He used someone that trusted him to spin a lie to make people care about himself.

Long one here, coming to this video rather late, but your take on this game connected with me in some ways that the other playthroughs I've watched were not able to.
I tend to be cynical of games that try to be more than they have business being sometimes, but I've come to realize that this game is less about the game itself and more about each person's takeaway. This game was less meant to be played in your room, and more played in front of others so we all get something from it.
Learning to value yourself is hard, maybe one of the hardest things in life. It took me until my late twenties to make any real progress, and leading up to that, I went through some really awful years of directionless depression. I stopped enjoying things, felt worthless, like I wasn't contributing anything of value to the world. My family, bless them, did their best to help me through it, but the problem was something only I could solve - I had to see the good in myself, see how I could help others. I learned slowly from a myriad of things, and gradually became able to say no to the things I used to tell myself. I'm still not complete, but I wanted to leave this here for those who might be dealing with depression, emptiness, feeling lost, worthless... it does get better.
Depression saps your will to do anything, but its antidote is to do something, any little thing, get some dirt moving under you, and then look down and see yourself moving, see where it takes you, and then use that momentum to drag others up onto their feet. Get in the habit of shouting down the thoughts that you're worthless, they're lies, every one of them.
Davey said in the game that he didn't know what a life driven by something other than validation would look like; while I'm still a bit attached to seeking validation, I can offer two big, promising alternatives. The first is a pursuit that so enraptures you, that you end up showing others not to impress them, but so they can enjoy what you're enjoying. The sort of thing where you call a friend over out of excitement not to show them something you did, but to show them something you find amazing. It's the sort of contagious fascination we see on occasion in wild-haired, eccentric science teachers.
For me, this has been language - all my life, I've loved languages, even tried to invent some of my own when I was a kid. So I started teaching myself Japanese using the internet. I've been at it for two years, and haven't slowed down... you want to know something cooooooool? The days of the week in Japanese are the sun for Sunday, moon for Monday, and then the other five are the five eastern classical elements - Tuesday = fire, Wednesday = water, Thursday = wood, Friday = metal, and Saturday = earth! I love sharing stuff I've learned like this, and I never feel like I'm showing off when I share it.
The other one is helping people. It turns out that I have a talent for teaching. I guess I kind of knew, since explaining things always came easily to me, but I wouldn't have chosen to be a teacher since I can't handle even a single kid for very long. However, I started helping at a local church's ESL program, teaching mostly people from Asian countries - the class I'm in right now has people from Japan, China, South Korea, and Brazil. It is the coolest thing ever when I see these people learn something. I get caught up in helping them and watching them grow, and I want to keep on doing it.
This comment thread may be dead since I wrote this eight months after the video's upload, but if people are still around, I'd love to hear about your journey, or where you're at right now, or whether these words have helped you in some way. Don't stop fighting, friends - you have value.

I played this game quite a few years ago and my reaction was very similar to yours. I was at a point in time in my life where I was struggling to find...well, me. Or at least some semblance of who I thought I was. I came across The Beginner's Guide by chance and it turned into one of the most moving experiences of my life, and truly brought back my love of video games, but more importantly, how storytelling can be be used in any medium to create a truly moving and thought provoking piece. What I really love about the Beginner's Guide is that while the STORY and CONTENT will be the same for everyone, their internal interpretations will vary due to their own personal life experiences. My original interpretation was about the importance of boundaries, and that still stands. But before this comment turns longer than it already is, thanks again for playing/showcasing this powerful journey of a game and for keeping your reactions in tact.

I have seen a lot of playthroughs of this game. Yours was one of the more real and emotional. My thoughts: Let's assume this is a work of fiction. It has two characters, Davey and Coda. I would also posit a third character that I call "the Coda in Davey's head" who is nothing like the real Coda. Davey had this view of Coda as a tortured artist and read a whole lot of stuff into Coda's work, even going so far as to make changes to Coda's work to make it closer to what Davey though the Coda-in-his-head would make. I would recommend playing the game a second time, this time trying watching how Davey is projecting himself on Coda's work and inventing ideas that aren't there.
But I have a theory that no one else has mentioned. Coda has ideas that Davey didn't even notice. My theory is: Coda is struggling with transgender issues. Notice that Coda's viewpoint characters all use female pronouns. "The past was behind her." etc. Notice the continuing motif of feeling trapped in a prison, finally culminating in the image of a sobbing woman. This would mean that when Davey shared Coda's work with people, he was potentially outing Coda before he/she was ready.
Another thing was in the theater game. "You will be playing as me. It is your dream to be a professional photographer of animals." Davey never mentioned that. It didn't fit in with what "Coda in his head" would want. Coda in his head was a tortured artist game designer. So perhaps these games were a hobby that Coda did for a while, and he is now a photographer. It fits into the idea that Davey doesn't really know Coda, except as this ideal genius that he can idolize and put on a pedestal. Anyway, these are my thoughts. I liked this video.

And it's very in-character for in-universe Davey to misgender Coda throughout. Because Davey doesn't understand Coda at all.

I think this is a bit of a stretch. The whole thing is metaphorical, including the stage game with the photographer. The character wanting to be a photographer is just that, a character.

OMG this really got me emotional thinking about my life. Thinking of everything I have been through. It goes back to games like The Last of Us and Beyond Two Souls or even Kingdom Hearts. How much these games I truly thank God for. For helping me overcome my demons I face every single day.. The war with my family friends and of who I am. God this episode Kat you made is beautiful and it hit me so much. Idk when The Last of Us Part 2 is coming out but I can already tell its probably going to leave me very emotional by the time I finish playing it.. Have to watch this a second time to really understand how my life is and everything is worth living. 😢😢❤ #EndureandSurvive

The whole game takes on a COMPLETELY different meaning/tone on repeat playthroughs. Every action and line puts you on Davey’s side the first time, but playing it again after the ending makes it clear how Davey’s unhealthy dependence on Coda’s games corrupted them. Davey insists that his games have to have some deeper purpose that relates to his own sense of self that wasn’t meant to be there by Coda. Davey says he admired Coda’s work, but after he met Coda, he started making changes to the games that fundamentally ignored their point. He sped up the prison wait and the stairs, he forced an ending onto the house cleaning game, he mocked his early games for being “generic” or “amateurish”, etc. Davey continuously talks over the dialogue options in the game, making it hard to catch what they’re trying to say. He constantly shared them with people when that’s not why he made them. Davey needed Coda to make himself feel better, he treated Coda as A game-making Machine.

As a person who creates art and also who's always trying to fix people and things, I felt like this game called me out. Davey felt the need to fix Coda's work as if Coda was broken or something. Also constantly trying to find worth or meaning in everything Coda did when probably what Coda ever wanted to do was enjoying making videogames for himself. I believe the constant pressure of a friend/family to push you into creating things gets to a point where your purpose of creating is no longer to make your own self happy but others.
Idk that was my take, and it kinda broke me honestly 🤡

I loved the part when you talk with the person that tells you to clean the house. I guess Coda created this person to have a purpose (=DO SOMETHING) by receiving orders. It made me think of the anime Violet Evergarden.
Even if it goes on and on. It's peaceful. I really liked it and never felt scared. Also, it's comforting to have someone constantly by your side when you feel that alone. I empathise a lot with him. I would love to be here for him, physically here for him.
The passage with the notes the viewers left on their path made me feel great in a way and emotional. When you feel down and find out other people do, I guess you just want to reach out for them, hold their hands. BE THERE.
Every day, mostly every night, before going to bed, I just think about the people in my life. Family, but especially "strangers", people I haven't met yet. I think about them, wishing that they can hear me. I just want them to feel surrounded regardless of the distance which separates us

Hey. I ´ve just watched this upload, and I ´ve really been going an emotional roller coaster. Thank you so much for uploading and sharing. I feel like I ´ve got athousand things to say, and I don ´t even know where to start. This game really makes me question my entire life. I can ´t imagine living without any people around me, and I want my friends to to be happy. That ´s why I treat them the way I do. At least I thought I did. But after this, I must admit that there is a very important question I haven ´t been asking myself for perhaps too long: Is it selfless of me to want certain things for my friends, or is it the most selfish and ignorant thing of me to influence them for the sake of my own happiness and project my own wishes and goals in life onto them? I hate to think that those few wonderful people in my life that I ´ve been lucky enough to be friends with didn ´t do with their lives what they originally wanted, but rather to make me happy when all I want for them was to see how great it is that they exist. They don ´t need to change for me. Do they need me at all? And when they do, will they tell me? And will they tell me how? How do I know when they ´re not happy if they think that I just want to see them smile, no matter what? Truth is, I don ´t even know if I know them well enough, and I ´ve known most of them for decades. I can only try to be respectful and hope they ´ll understand. Up to now, my answer to all these questions has always been that I ´ll ask when I think that there ´s a problem I might be able to help them with, just so they know that I ´m there. I ´ll ask if they want me to contribute, and if they say no, it ´ll be no for me, and I ´ll take a step back. I won ´t take that amiss. Hopefully... . Who am I to tell them what to do with their lives in the first place? They survived without me before I got to know them. The difference is that they don ´t need to survive without me anymore if they don ´t want to. I love and respect them the way they are, and I would hate myself for turning them into copies of myself. Sure, I have to trust them with their lives, but I would even trust them with my own life. They ´ve done everything to deserve my respect. I can only hope that ´s the right thing to do. But that ´s my problem, not theirs. And when I ´m unsure, then I can still communicate my feelings and ask them. Seeing them happy makes me happy. Making them happy won ´t work without them. Again, thank you so much for uploading. There couldn ´t have been a better person to do a video on that game than you. I wish you a happy weekend. Glad that I ´m a subscriber.

Hi, just got the notification. Another video, but at about 9AM in the morning. It is wonderful that you also do uploads so early in the morning and moreover that you have a variety of games on your channel like this video. I don’t know this game yet , but I think it will be very emotional 😭😭😭😭. If you also want another heartbreaking experience you should also play that dragon cancer. It‘s more a journey than a game. It is so emotional and sad, because it is based on a true story and when I watched it I cried a lot , because I could relate so much with the story by my own experience 😭😭😭. It is more a visual style of game instead of only the phases that people go through cancer. But I warn you, this is not an easy game and you will shed a lot of tears if you play it 😭😭😭. It made me realize how precious life is and that you should spend every minute of your life as much as you can , because you never know, when it is over. It taught me to say the right things at the right time, because if somebody passes before you could say him, how much you love this person, you feel guilty and numb at the same time😭😭😭.
But thank you to show us so in- depth games with such strong messages. It is awesome that you share your thoughts and feelings with us and it is wonderful that games like these can help us to come out of our cocon and bring us back to life. It really proves that video games aren’t only games, but they can be related to life and also help us understand things better. These are the type of games that symbolizes phases of our life and what we are going through, these games emphasizes with our thoughts and feelings and we feel drown in them ❤️❤️❤️❤️.
I love your videos so much and it is awesome that you really put so much love into every one of them. Therefore you deserve your 10.000 + subscribers and I swear that the squad will grow more and more over the time if you continue to be so loveable and funny. You are a wonderful person and so grounded. Please do never change and always believe in your dreams.
Here are your trophy’s for today and several fist bumps 🏆🏆🏆👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻❤️❤️❤️

46:30 This one reminds me of those people who seem to be so nice and kind, and politely ask you for some little favours, but the more you get yourself involved in them, there's more and more asking for favours, all of them still very polite and kind, but you slowly start realizing that it's just another prison :q The prison of kindness. This one is really hard to escape from, because you really don't want to disappoint those kind people in trouble, you don't have heart to tell them that you can't help them anymore. But you have to eventually, because otherwise you will be trapped with them forever :q
    48:13 Good question :q
48:45 Welp, that's one thing to escape too: the sudden death of the kind one you were helping all that time :q That's at least how I perceive this level.

Knowing the creator of this, My take on it always was that Davie and Koda are both just Davie. Koda being his games and Davie being his need to share. The creator did talk about depression and struggling with sudden fame when his first game went viral so it makes sense to me to read it as him talking about himself.
And speaking as a developer, I can also relate to both of them so much! Making games is hard and stressful. I wanted to make a very personal project for a while but I‘m still stuck on it because of how painful it is to basically turn your darkest inner trauma and struggle into art. It‘s like you‘re doing an exorcism on yourself while you struggle with the idea of sharing that too. You have to fight yourself when you do it. Because you know that putting yourself out there like that is gonna make you even more vulnerable.
So really to me Davie is the part of him that wants to share his own work with people and Koda is the one struggling with it because of how painful and scary that is.
All these games have a double meaning. And that‘s what I really like about it.
Davie‘s games always were subversive like this. And told stories that‘d confuse you and leave an impact. And I do love that about his work.
But for this one, I guess he just realized that making personal work like that isn‘t for him. It doesn‘t feel good for him to share it and make it palletable for ppl playing like in the game. It‘s still meaningful. And also says a lot about the art world in general and how critics interact with your work making you feel good but also bad about what you make.
What really always hit me hard about this one was the like „why can‘t you just let them be what they are?“ coming from koda directly because at the end of the day, that‘s what we really want with our art isn‘t it? We don‘t wanna make em pallatable. We don‘t wanna adjust them to be less complicated. We just want them to be what they are. But sometimes we also wanna show them to people. We want what koda wants. Just like how we want what Davie wants. We are both of them.
