  • This is the type of game that will make you rethink your motivation in life. The Beginner's Guide indirectly challenges the player to question the commonplace act of being driven by external validation. The story hit very close to home and even made me ask myself questions I hadn’t thought about enough. I hope you all enjoy this gameplay as much as I did. Such a powerful and vulnerable narrative from Davey Wreden, the man who brought us The Stanley Parable. Watch my Music Video: • Among Us but I'm Singi...

At the sentence 'Stop putting lampposts in my game' I wondered how Davey had access to Coda's computer. He would've had to edit the game of his computer for Coda to see something wrong. Then, I realized. Coda is Davey. Coda is just a different side of him. Davey made all of this. The last game, where you are stuck in a prison, that's Davey trapping Coda while he goes off to do other things. Coda's last game was made in June. But Davey wasn't done, he made The Stanley Parable in July of the same year.

Well the creator of this game is either coda him self or his friend. Who says in the game he was invited over multiple times to see codas games, he could of just downloaded them.

Coda is fictional. The game is fiction. If it wasn't, Davey would be arrested for using someone else's material, without permission, and making profit off of it.

Exactly what I Think, coda isn't real, this was the creator speaking to us, saying that he was conflicted, saying he was depressed but some part of him though he was fulfilled, him trying to understand himself, him knowing what he was doing then just getting confused and wrapped up in what he was doing to a point where he thought he wasn't himself, him making his games unfinishable and incomplete where the other side of him went back to complete them, to feel complete, but the feeling never came, and he felt he was doing something wrong showing others his games and saying how he felt, he thought about how he was feeling but tried to convince himself he was fine, and he is know looking for confrontation through this, trying to motivate himself to make more as they were original and complex, to get that creative spark, that MACHINE working again, to really look for encouragement and motivation to really work at something... Coda is just a manifestation of himself he can't understand.

    • @kodakblank
      @kodakblank 8 лет назад +32

+The Llama One the creator is a character though, this was the actual author of the game describing basically someone who has completely lost contact with them selves, the games were only made for this game and in the story Davey and Coda are the same person struggling to understand them self, it's so deep and rich and really makes you think about the things in it... Makes you realise that the story in the game is the creator in the story is talking about himself, trying to motivate and make himself feel complete, it's absolutely amazing and breathtaking I can't get over how well it tells its story, it blows my mind!

I don't know why, but the maze at the end made me cry, and then she said "why do we try to be important when we're all just tiny little specks" and its true. Seeing an endless maze and realizing if I were to go through it, I would be lost, small, unimportant, unwanted, just, useless. That added to the fact that the voice was no longer, no comfort. Alone. Alone is the word to describe this. Unbelievable, we are all in our own world, we all have are own worlds, and as much as we try to be social and happy and know lots of people, we are all in our own world. We are all separated, left to fend for ourselves. Now short-term, that doesn't sound to bad, but if fate wants you to have a long life, and you do, doesn't that sound scary? I don't know, its just so gratifying.

the end made me cry too but ur so right its as if we are in our own world distancing everyone who comes acrossed us. it does feel as if the narator is coda because i feel like the lampost added in the things was what the narator as coda added to complete the games in a sence that he understood. this whole thing is so breathtaking as kassie said being friends with this guy i do wish the same just better knowing his personality could really make this more understandable. one last thing it was so sad how kassie sat there on the one level saying possitive things about making games as coda even though the game making was destroying him mentally
and yes i get this video and comment was from years ago but still and i hope you see this, i love your thinking and truely thought out topics

the maze at the end was the puzzle that he wanted to solve but he does not have an answer to the maze keeps going it's his trapped emotions he can't find the end and can't move on unless he finds the way to his struggle but by now he should have found his end to the puzzle he unlocked a new future a new life he could have found it but he locked up himself instead of finding a way out coda is his depression and anxiety but Davey is the lost one he needs to know why he locks himself up and wants to keep everything away to everyone but coda stopped and quited and Davey thinks it's his fault he thinks he messed up there relationship and thinks there something wrong with him Davey wants coda to continue but coda doesn't listen because he lost all contact with Davey.

    Spoilers
I'm unsure how obvious this was, but the last level "The Tower" was a test, "Coda" had previously mentioned numerous times that the hidden complexity behind the scenes in some of the levels were not there to be seen, not there to be viewed.
In the room above the stairs, one of the ideas is "A key in one game opens a door in a completely separate game"
In the game with the notes, ONE message appears twice, Devil, Tower, Star.
These are tarot cards, The numbers for these three? 15, 16, and 17. 151617 is the code to progress in the Tower.
In the final level Davey chose not to respect that, had Davey not violated the product Coda made and opened the door to proceed through the level, he would not have arrived at the messages telling him to not contact "Coda" again, if he had just let it go he could have said "I spent hours on the maze and found the key to the combination lock, but I couldn't figure out the room you fall into", then perhaps "Coda" would have replied.
The maze is 100 passable, it takes effort but friends are worth effort.
It's like me giving you a box, and saying "If you care about me, don't open it" and inside the box is a restraining order, which would only be necessary if you opened the box.
If Davey hadn't violated the game, he never would have been told to cease contact.

Yeah, to be fair though, this was already the last straw for Coda and I get the feeling he already expected Davey to hack the game because he knew he had been hacking all of his games so far and editing and showing them to people that he created an entire message behind the wall just to prove to him further that he does all these things.

I think I was meant to find this. Call me stupid or whatever, it's fine. But today I started to relapse into my depression. I had this big blowout with my mom and started to blame myself. I sat in my room for hours on end just staring at my lap. I eventually fell asleep and woke up an hour later, only to be completely tired as if I hadn't slept for days.... But then I saw this, because I went to my computer to distract myself, because I can't fall into my depression again. I have a place and I need to be there to keep it full. But I couldn't tell myself that. So when I saw this game, I realized I related to Coda. Whether he is real, fictional, or Daveys alter ego. I related to the personality of the name. And it made me feel better. Because maybe I'm not a creator of games and can't think of what to do. But he was out of ideas for a thing. And so was I. I was out of ideas about how I was good. But then this video mentioned something, low points. And that made me think, and feel better. Because "low points" are to be expected. Maybe I wasn't falling back into my depression and was just having a low point... ya know? Maybe everything's gonna get better after this. Maybe I won't blame myself tomorrow. It's just a low point.

See, this is what I wish gaming could be. Games could be just as emotionally gripping and real and varied in style and genre as movies if only developers would open their minds to them and start to fund creative and unique projects like this. I like a shooter every once in a while, too, but projects like this make me wish gaming could expand its horizons a bit more. Of course indie content that goes against the norm is slowly becoming more popular but it's not nearly as publicly accepted as I would like it to be.

    • @Gloom

+Tessie Ward I watched an interview from Davey after playing this, and he made the fantastic point that your intention will heavily influence what you create. As much as I love self-absorbed and reckless games that are created to indulge the person playing 95% of the time, I think games like The Beginner's Guide should be just as popular :).

  • @reptilerepresentative7937

The Coda and Davey in this game are fictional. This Davey did not createThe Stanley Parable.
Coda is his love for game making, the happiness he gets from creating these games, the voice that pushed you through when times are tough. Game making is so personal to Coda, he wants to share it with no one. Davey is the part of him who want feedback, praise, happiness, validation. He wants people to look and see what he's done and tell him what they think.
Coda doesn't like this. Game making is personal. It's not something he wants others to see. He wants to isolate himself, wants no one to see it. These games are his. But Davey needs feedback-hell, he craves it. He wants it so bad that he'll show others even if he doesn't want to. He doesn't want people to see it yet he does want to. He convinces himself that not showing it to others is unhealthy. Why is he isolating himself? This isn't good. He sees that his games don't have an end, they're just things that don't go anywhere or do anything. Without commentary, they mean nothing or at least very little, at least to others. Coda wants this. He just wants to make games and not feel pressured to tag on a meaning. He doesn't want a solution.
Davey doesn't like this. So he makes destinations. he makes lampposts. He starts giving his games more meanings and destinations and reasons to exist. They aren't just space in a folder. And he hits a wall.
The ideas don't come, they don't want to come. He's stuck. He doesn't want to be stuck. It's not a pleasant feeling- no ideas coming. Just sitting, thing oh so hard, why won't they come? He won't ideas so bad he creates games off of no ideas. He tacks on meanings and is killing himself. Coda wants to just create games and Davey just wants people to like them and they're the same person and it's just one big mess. So he shows it to others. But what if they don't understand it? So instead of letting people come up with their own interpretations, walks them through it. They agree with his points- they make sense and they haven't played it w/o commentary so... Davey must be right. They like the games because of the meanings Davey just tags on.
I understand this feeling. I want to show my audience the meaning of this, instead of letting them find their own. I don't know why. I just want them to see it.
Coda and Davey are tearing themselves apart. Coda just wants the games, Davey wants validation, no one is happy. So one of them quits. A part of him realizes this needs to stop. Coda can't make games any longer because if they're just empty shells no one will ever see or want to see, then who would play them?
Empty, meaningless games don't stick with us. No matter how much hard work and care went into them, they don't stick because they're void of purpose. He realizes he can't just make games because games, he needs to give them a reason to exist.
Coda stops making games and Davey starts.
That or they both are just fucking amazing characters that are impossibly human. Seriously, if these are just two are just characters, I am beyond impressed.

I think I get what you mean! I used to always write out my most vulnerable feelings, and it was cathartic, but I wasn't very open to sharing the emotional state that inspired the "work". I suppose I would've felt violated if someone kept pushing me to share it. The way that The Beginner's Guide was able to share such a complicated topic in such a thought-provoking manner still inspires me to no end. I hope to read something you've written someday, if you're open to sharing!

+GloomGames I've actually began writing a story. I've realized that my experiences could give characters some depth in their personalitys. Like emotions, depression etc. I'd be honored to have such an inspiration like yourself to read my books or even my notes I've been working on for the past few hours. Thanks for replying to me, and just knowing that you would love to read it brings a huge smile to my face.

I lost her to poison my neighbors hated her and killed her with rat poison she died on
    Wednesday August 2 2017
Before I knew she couldnt move her back legs I could not get her up she was not eating or drinking I got a Friend to drive her to the vet they said she had to stay the night I was forced to leave her there I could not sleep that night she stopped breathing in the middle of the night cause I couldn't get her there sooner and it was all my fault her blood was, black and she was only 1 year 6 months 2 days old I talk to her every night I play with her favorite soccer ball in her favorite park And walk "her" favorite path with her every day 😭

Davey is a real person. He and coda were very good friends. Dave he did actually show his games against his will. The last game of codas was actually cod as his last game. It was only meant for Davey because he knew that Davey was the only person that could open the door to get to the end of the level. The last game was made by Davie as a cry for help to coda

lol at the two people replying making shit up. No, coda isn't a real person. It would be illegal to release his games like that. It's a fictional scenario between a made up guy called Coda and an alter ego of Davey to make it seem more plausibly real.

+Cecily Alexander I KNOW! It's so genius and it tells its story fantastically! It really makes you think about the possibilities and doesn't flat out tell you that the characters are the same person, doesn't even hint at it, it really brings across the feeling of not understanding your self or loosing a part of you, the character setting up questions for the other side to answer, it's amazing, I'm going to try to tackle a story like this eventually, I just love it so much!

It makes me see the world in a different way I think he made his games for him. Maybe his games made him happy, and to show meaning in everything we do. Thanks for playing this video game :)
