    polish geralt is not another "low voice high testosterone" badass.
    Just the normal guy- charismatic but normal, like the book Geralt.
    second and maybe main reason was not acting itself, but the dialogues were full of anachronisms and it was fitting perfectly into the medieval style. Books were like a complete guide to follow for the screenwriters.
    Let me five You example. At the begonnong of the game in english Geralt walks into a bar and says "give me booze" with that angry Christian-Bale-like voice.
    In polish he says "karczmarzu, dajcie przepalanki"
    He refers to bartender, with some kind of respect. It is said in medieval manner, word "bartender" is jot actually used. Also thing that he orders is like some kind of moonshine, but made in the old style with melted sugar.
    They really worked not only on acting but also on the dialogues, the characters say.

    What surprises me is how many people consider Doug Cockle's voice of Geralt to be "The original/definitive version". Rozenek's Voice acting is... Well, Cockle sounds like an actor playing a badass and tough lone wolf with a sarcastic and quippy side. Rozenek actually IS all that, and more. Since with the missions where Geralt is goofing off drunk or... I dunno, talking to inanimate objects hit different.

      noooo please explain

    • @xFurashux
      @xFurashux Год назад +177

      @@gracchen2500 It’s not easy so no woder you didn’t get an answer but I will give you a few examples. First of all, the translators ofc had to choose balance between a literal translation and keeping the meaning. They went more for the second one, which is a better choice but still they had to lose something. To that there are words in Polish that just can’t be accurately translated.
      Lambert says „…jak się nachlał prał mnie i matkę do krwi” which is translated to „he’d knock a few back, then beat me and mom bloody”. The closest literal translation would be „when he got drunk, he beat me and my mom to blood” but still not really. „Nachlał” if I translate correctly is a past, singular, male form of transitive version of verb „chlać”. „Chlać” means getting drunk but „pić” can also means that. „Chlać” is more, it’s a word almost solely used for the worst version of drinking, it implies more problems and less control in the person that’s doing that than just getting drunk. It’s the same with „prał” which is a form of „prać” that in this context means beating up (maybe beating down fits more) but „bić” also means that. "Prać" again implies a stronger version, more brutal, longer lasting, more furious. Beating to a pulp fits better but it's not a 1 word. Having those meanings in singular words condenses their power.
      At the end „pierdolę takie przeznaczenie” is translated to „I say fuck that kinda destiny”. It’s the best way to translate but it again is losing. Literal would be „I fuck such destiny” but both don’t fit 100% as this one is too shallow. In „pierdolę” it also helps there’s „r” in it which in Polish makes a different sound than English „r” and it allows to prolong it and get more into it to show rage than a soft sounding fuck.

      As Poles have not conquered so many countries, they do not have so many accents. However, there are differences, though more than in accent they are in sentence construction, words used, speed of words spoken. Well, and linguistic errors. The Polish version does a great job of conveying whether someone is educated or not. Whether someone is a fighter or a scholar. In addition, Geralt is able to get along with everyone, speaking to simple people in such a way that they simultaneously understand what he is saying, but do not understand his intelligent irony.

You start adding "little" everytime you say "daughter" in English and it sounds like a cheap google translate work.
      Edit: If you wanted to translate the sentence "Córeczko, ależ ty wypiękniałaś", the easiest way would be for her to say "My beautiful daughter". The translators placed emphasis not on the "daughter" part, but the "you've grown beautiful" part. Translations are always about the give and take.

It's a whole different story when someone has this voice naturally like Kevin Conroy who voiced Batman with basically his own voice, he lowered it a bit of course but not to the point where it sounds fake.

      I remember watching a video detailing differences between MCU (normal people being heroes) and DCU (gods, myths, heroes, more as symbols than as humans), and it seems like Geralt should be in the MCU part of the equation (please disregard all yhe recent MCU failings, and I mean it metaphorically anyway), but they're trying to push him to DCU and steal his humanity. And the "witchers don't feel emotions" excuse is stupid, because even the author realized how dumb and boring it made Geralt and retconned it into being a false rumor Geralt spreads for the lulz.
      The best showcase for Polish VA's superiour acting skills is the Hearts of Stone party with Geralt getting possessed by Witold. He changes his demeanor completely and it feels like a different person is piloting Geralt. The English VA is struggling to maintain his gravely voice while trying to play a different character.
      Another is the flirting with the bank clerk in Toussant. The Polish VA can actually act playful, while the English VA is monotone.

    Geralt from W1 in Polish version sounds the best. In Witcher 3 Geralt is too emotional and that's pretty annoying when you think about emotionless monster slayer. Geralt from English version sounds more like Geralt from Witcher 1, but rest of the game? Yep, Polish is way better. Mostly other versions than English sounds better because are not blocked due to how English is simple and doesn't allow to play with the language like Polish do.

  • @Harzexe

    The problem with english Geralt voice is that it's too low pitch which makes it sound more forced. Hoarseness is a bit annoying as well. It's trying to be badass too hard, in every scenario.. even when there is no need for that. Polish Geralt lowers his voice only when he is really, really pissed or when there is a specific situation that requires that. Simply put: he sounds more natural and realistic.

    • @dud5606
      @dud5606 9 месяцев назад +1

      Funny because in Witcher 1 the actor had a much more natural tone of voice. Still low but he actually sounded like a human being. Now it sounds almost like a parody...

    • @Blackwing2345635
      @Blackwing2345635 9 месяцев назад +3

      No, it is not because of a low pitch. It is just emotionless, flat, like an automaton, not like a human. It would be absolutely the same with a higher pitch.
      For some reason EN director decided, that Geralt is a meat robot, although not only books, but the game itself shows, that he is not.
      For example RU VA of Geralt, Vsevolod Kuznetsov, has a low pitched voice too, actually on par with Doug Cockle, but he wasn't voice acting it like an android ASMR xD
      I can understand all three languages fine (EN, PL, RU, though PL a bit worse), and for me EN voiceover is no-no, while PL and RU are on par. Sometimes RU for me is better, as I understand it better, sometimes PL - because, well Polish fits + scenes were directed with PL and EN in mind. RU had a big f-up with insane speed ups and slow downs to fit timings of some scenes, it was really bad before they adjusted it. Then it became just bad xD

    • @tymondabrowski12
      @tymondabrowski12 9 месяцев назад +3

      We don't really have accents (though someone mentioned how peasants and nobles speak differently, which I guess is true, but they also use different language and whatnot). There are a few dialects or very related languages like Kashubian and Silesian, but they could've been difficult to understand; and other than that, and maybe mountaineers type of speaking, there is also an eastern/small villages type of speaking. But overall we're pretty much all mixed up into a homogenous accent. That's mostly due to wars and displacements. Situation in 18th century was probably different.
