- It was a chilly Michigan morning in November… perfect to put the maiden flight on the new HobbyZone Apprentice STOL S 700mm. It’s a PERFECT 1st plane for the beginner pilot yet has a few tricks up its sleeve for the advanced pilot. 😉😎

I have to say as a first time RC pilot this thing was truly super easy to fly. I got the RTF version, and was surprised to learn it came with a trial version of a flight sim. I spent about 30 minutes on the sim with this exact model and got a feel for just how stable it felt in beginner mode.
Then I spent about another half hour taxiing around and getting a feel for it's VR and generally being a bit nervous to actually commit to a takeoff. Knowing full well the landing is way harder than taking off.
Then just sent it, took off, and was able to land without incident the first time in beginner mode.
I've only got about 2 hours in the air with it, but I already feel comfortable taking off, climbing to about 50 feet, and farting around trying to do tricks and stuff in "expert" mode, then landing in beginner. The included panic button on the RTF transmitter is a godsend. VERY confidence inspiring.
Not trying to brag, but I feel as a first time RC pilot that this thing has been exceptionally easy to learn on and also feels very safe and stable, allowing me to push my limits with every flight and get a feel for unassisted flying.
Bonus: Being a beginner, I have crashed it a few times. It's got a few small dings on the leading edges, and the lower nose of the fuselage is a little crumpled, lol. But it still flies just as good as the first time. This thing is incredibly robust.
Congrats and keep practicing! It won’t be long and you’ll be comfortable tossing it around down low.
Very nice Mike, man that little plane flies good!! I also like the scenery...a winter wonderland for sure! And to think it ain't even winter yet!
Thanks John! I can usually tolerate the snow until about the middle of January at which point I've had my fill. Thankfully the snow was gone later that afternoon.

Once the safe was off you had me smiling and laughing all the stunts you did especially upside down very cool!
Thanks Jeffery. It’s a fun little plane for sure.
Nice little bird Mike. Really a significant release. Very well flown as always!
Thanks Adam. It will be perfect to teach my grandkids to fly. I'm looking forward to spring when I can get them on the sticks.
Absolutely love watching your channel, it's so relaxing and inspiring.
Thank you very much!!!
Nice flight Michael even with the sloppy loop, lol. HH has been doing a good job with the UMX line and this looks like a winner.
Thanks odwatchguy! It's a fun little plane and fits nicely into the UMX lineup.
Great flying sir! Seems like a really great 1st airplane.
Thanks WHTN! It is very docile and should make a great first plane.
That's what I need to enjoy my flying more, A really big parking lot!
It does come in handy but it is really only available to fly at early in the morning.
Really enjoy your flying and content!
Thank you Roland! I’ll keep trying to come up with quality content.
@@michaelclinerc3211 You know what's amazing? It took me a couple videos before I even realized that you don't narrate your videos. Your content and captions cover it all! Well done sir. Now, if I could only fly even close to how you fly, that would be something!
3:44 True that but about how much could you get away with those type of servos these UMX planes comes with without them blowing out?
A very fantastic maiden flight indeed Micheal👍👍😎😎👍👍
I agree that the UMX servos are not the strongest. They should have enough torque but I’m guessing how the little Apprentice is designed it’s going to limit how much more I can get out of it.
Great flight mine arrives tomorrow.
Enjoy!!!
I have that same plane and you make it look so easy im replacing the body as I watch your video mine has a tree magnet in it somewhere 😂 Hopefully this new body doesn't have one hidden somewhere😅
You know Brian, I think my first Turbo Timber Evolution had one of those in the fuselage. I flew it through the trees that were to the right of where I was flying. I never knew about those but I will for sure check my future planes for them. 😉😀😎
I think you got really lucky. Loved flying mine, but the elevator setting w were WAY off and needed a lot of up elevator. Got dark too fast to change the settings.
SAFE helped on the initial lift off but once I flew it without SAFE it did need some trim adjustments.
Nice flying as usual Mike. That was with the recommended throws? Good authority.
Yes, stock control settings.
As always.. A great show of what this little plane can do on both ends of the spectrum. I bet its been a while since you did a takeoff in SAFE.. 😀. Well done my friend.. btw, can you attach the UMX Floats on it?
Thanks Steffen! Yes I typically never use SAFE but I thought it was appropriate for this particular model. Unfortunately there are no accommodations to put floats on it without needing to modify it.
I upgraded mine to a 35c 2S 1200mah battery. It’s 50 grams heavier than the .03 grams battery it comes with. But after checking center of gravity and a couple of crash flights. I’ve got it to fly better than out the box. More power but heavy enough to fight winds and fly normal. I can control it way better now that it flies like a larger plane. It can stall, hover. I just wish it had flaps. Next for me is the mini Draco or the 1.5 apprentice
I’m surprised that it will handle that size battery. I’m glad you’re enjoying it.
@@michaelclinerc3211 it took a lot of crashes and learning to find a way to fly it smoothly and stalling is more of a challenge at lower speeds. But it definitely upgraded me into a more advanced flying style hopefully many more flights out of it. 10% glue now. The biggest problem is trying to find a place that not will fit. A little nose heavy but damn does it handle well
I got one looks nice. I wonder if it will do 3s?
I believe that the esc will handle 3s. I would suggest going to a slightly smaller diameter propeller.
I'm dying to find out! BUT, if it's a '2s only', it's a $160 misstakke🤷♂️
Ha! It's funny how SAFE goes against the Master's wishes. 🤣 You're definitely not used to have less than total control. 😉
Very true! It was a weird feeling pushing the sticks all the way to one side and having it respond with a gentle bank.
Is it more quiet than a UMX Timber?
It’s about the same as the UMX Turbo Timber Evolution.
@@michaelclinerc3211 Ok thank you! Not quiet but more quiet than the UMX Timber X..
Mine will just not roll that crisp at any speed. It almost fights rolling over unless I'm nearly full throttle. Very stable little bird, though.
I did move the aileron pushrods to the inner hole on the control horn.
Don’t crash, can’t get props
I may or may not have crashed it once… 😉
Nice flight, I'm Mia from HobbyZone and we would love to send you a plane for review, may we know your email address?
