Lake ontario should be the main focus as altantic salmon (and even harbour seals) were truly native to those waters only a century or two ago.. The non native pacific salmon are neat but i'd trade them anyday for the real salmon that belongs there.. Just like grayling should be a focus to lake michgan. where they once were native.. There was also many special strains of lake trout that ran rivers on mass. That have been destroyed. Some still exist but are in very specific rivers,.. Humans have destroyed these great lake fisheries
Very inspiring! I live on Vancouver island where volunteers help to sustain the yearly salmon runs for the five species that live here. Thanks for sharing
Great comment! Now you get to kill things without going very far! This crap about bringing the river back to being original actually has nothing to do with the motivation. Ducks unlimited is the same way. They want more ducks so they can kill more.
@@PacoOtis Man I can’t tell if you’re serious. You do realize that there’s hardly any salmon left because of the dams? By removing them they can freely spawn and grow to healthier numbers. Just because some people will fish for them doesn’t change the fact that this is a huge improvement for the environment. So shut up and keep your ignorant comments to yourself.
Here in the lower New England states the salmon (and many other species) face some serious obstacles. The rebuilding of these resources requires a global cohesive effort. Honestly I would love to no longer worry about this. On this coast there is no collective sanctuary. From the collective supportive trophic biomass to the actual migrating species, the human stamp is omnipotent and not in a good way. The greatest human created mortality that has yet to be quantified that which occurs during the micro stage. Again the key species of interest and the supporting trophic biomass.
I wish California would remove the dams on all the rivers. It's a sin what the government did to the king salmon fishery. 10-15lb salmon. Even keep 24 inch salmon. Most of salmon are hatchery fish. Very few native salmon.
Don't ever let people call you a NIMBY in a derogatory way, which industry often does. This is an awesome example of how locals have taken the conservation of the environment in their backyard, and have done good for an entire freshwater system.
Let’s see: 1) worthless dam. 2) Assisting a fast disappearing game and food species. Gee. I don’t know. I can’t come to a decision. Let’s not change anything. I’m scared.
In Helsinki, where I used to live, there is a similar issue. There are some differences tho, the dam is prettier and some fish, mainly brown trout, eel and lamprey can still pass it. Some people just really like their freakin dams, it's unreal. Can't punch a hole through it, can't make it higher to redirect the water, can't remove it. That's how significant it is, a couple of stacked rocks. It's a national conversation over here.
convincing republicans to do something that is in their best interest and the best interest of their future is never easy, but i am very happy to see that they can make those decisions at times.
the land didnt rise the water receded that's how California used to be an island.. the water receded and California became the way it is today.. and it all took place way less than 10,000 years ago..
This needs to be done all through the great lakes. Good work

Has nothing to do with fishing. The real problem is being ignored.
Like to see these dams removed and nature reclaim what it should have been all along.
Superb, congrats to the town

Good job! Let's not stop here though.

each fish cost $100 to catch these go into the local shops bars and restaurants, and young people with family come to town
undam the rivers,....more salmons for your grandchildren.
it's sad but in austria something like that wouldn't be possible because the bureaucrats don't care about nature

God everyone looks so old in this county, no youngster left?
No wonder the Indians cried when the white man came. He killed and took without reverence or care for what the future would bring.

First you kill the salmon , then you bring it back ?????
