LYRICS:
Well I've been out walking
I don't do too much talking these days
These days
These days I seem to think a lot
About the things that I forgot to do
And all the times I had the chance to
And I had a lover
It’s so hard to another these days
These days
Now if I seem to be afraid
To live the life that I have made in song
It's just that I've been losing so long
I’ll keep on moving
Things are bound to be improving these days
These days
These days I sit on corner stones
And count the time in quarter tones to ten, my friend
Don’t confront me with my failures
I had not forgotten them
Songwriters: Browne Jackson
These Days lyrics © Swallow Turn Music, Open Window Music
My girlfriend at the time, my future wife, introduced me to Jackson Browne in 1973. I’ve been his biggest fan ever since. My beautiful wife passed away last October. Now, when I hear his songs, especially this one, I cry, not because of the sadness I feel, but because of the beautiful memories they bring.
So sorry for your deep loss after such a long life together 🥺
I am so sorry for your loss. When I first heard Jackson Browne ( as late as 1978) I was blown away. I've followed the music all my life. Do you believe in the Afterlife? I didn't but now I do. There is so much science that pointe to the reality of the Subtle Dimension. I do believe you will meet your dear lady again and never be parted. Till then, sir, may you walk your days in peace..
Aah that’s so sad but somehow I don’t know lovely when music touches the soul you just transcend as does the love of your life, remember and smile x
Condolences, Stephen.
Stephen M - thanks for sharing what you did. Sorry about your wife's passing and agreed JB is much of the soundtrack of my life. Best to you!
"Don't remind me of my failures, I have not forgotten them." The one line that stuck with me all my life.
I don't do that much gambling these days.
Same friend.
No--we don't ever forget our failures--we just keep moving forward!
My sentiments exactly
Mary Beth, trust me when I say, it’s a big club! I’m pretty sure it has stuck with everyone who’s ever heard it. The fact that he wrote it at such a young age, has always blown me away. Regards
Guy wrote this when he was about 16 and is singing it in his mid-70s. What a journey he has been on with this song.
Seems like he never moved on.
@@nancymathews8685 Deep humour!
❤listening to JB all these years with him! Story of my life, amazing insight he has!
Heard a story like that from James Taylor at a recent concert. He introduced "You've Got a Friend" by saying he was introduced to the song by Carole King when they were both playing the Troubadour in LA in 1969. She had just finished it and wanted Taylor to hear it. He went back to his hotel after the show and was working out how he would sing the song. He said he never imagined he would still be singing it 55 years later.
I remember being a poor lost teenager in 1979 when I first discovered JB. I think his "running on empty" album was the first disk I bought and played over and over and over. We were instant friends, even though I know he touched so many this same way. 45 years later, we've both matured. Mr Browne has mellowed and aged like a very fine wine. I couldn't love his renditions of his music more than when I first heard them. It seems we've grown together, although I believe him to be so much more in tune with the world than I. He's just the kind of person I wish I'd had the privilege of growing up with and knowing. Not so I could say "I knew him when", but because I know we all go through dark times. He was just able to articulate through his music so much better than most of us (especially myself) could do through our growing up. I love his humanitarian side. Mr Browne, all I can say is, thank you. Your compassion for your fellow man and your music means the world to me.
Jackson is like red wine. Gets better the older he gets.
And you just enjoy drinking it also...wherever you listen to it..
Jackson Browne has always been an old soul. He tells of the feelings that we try to describe but have no words for. He is a generation's laureate.
I was once told about Jason Isbell, on a MLB forum no less, about his propensity for sad songs. My response was "Have you ever heard of Jackson Browne"? The last line, .. "don't confront me with my failures, .. I had not forgotten them". Considering that he wrote the song at 16-17 years old, is staggeringly profound.
Written when he was a teen - so wise and poignant. One of the great JB songs.
Sixteen correct
@@brandmives Hard to believe a 16 yo wrote these lyrics.
I was thinking the same exact thing. This song speaks to me so much more now at 53. it blows my mind a 16-year-old could be so insightful. Anyway, this is my new favorite version!
Jackson a great song 🙏🏻about yesterday, today and tommorow .🙏🏻
WoW, thank you. Your referral to him as JB drew another tear from my eye; realizing that he & Jimmy Buffett have the same initials. They are both very talented, gifted artists that God gifted the world with & their lives in this world will continue through their unique words & sounds. ~
As a vocational teacher myself and Mr C shop teachers would always play this song in our shop-welding fabrication shop - the kids grew up with Jackson Brown and especially this song don’t remind me of my failures I have not forgotten them - such reflections of life Shop teachers both are baby boomers Mr C passed away now this song makes me cry and remember our friendships and teaching our vocational students - great song Jackson Brown
I cry (at 80) hearing Jackson. How would I manage without him, he is such a HUGE part of my life, especially the early days. Please life, let me go first.
I can’t listen to this song without crying.
Same for me at 79yo
Me too 🙏❤️. 72
Me too, just 25...
Me at 62 , well folks looks like we’re all in this together.
I think that this is the best recorded version of this song that I've heard. It just seems even more poignant coming from an elder, and the band....perfection.
My mind exactly.
.
i was thinking the same and also now at 67 how this song is so relevant and why as a 20 yeear old it was just as relevant.
@@bdubyou55 Ditto for me. Looking at 67 shortly. All his work resonates timelessly for me. Incredible.
What’s amazing is, he wrote this at age 16.
"Don't confront me with my failures. I have not forgotten them." What a powerful lyric.

Indeed.
Yesh!
Every morning when I wake
Hard to believe he wrote that at sixteen. Blows me away.
Jackson is a gift to all of us! Just think, he wrote this when he was 16, nearly 60 years ago! This is a great video with a great supporting cast!
Ever since I heard "Doctor My Eyes" in Vietnam on armed forces radio in 1972 I've been a devotee of his. He speaks for us all at some point in every song.
Thank you for your service in Vietnam I am so impressed with the veterans from that Era. I was running around drinking partying and shooting the peace sign. I am so sorry for being an idiot.
Wow. I can’t imagine. But my parents are WWIIVets. We used to say rosaries “for the boys”. You will always be the boys to us.
Agreed.
They're war criminals who illegally invaded a small country that wanted it's freedom for 50+ years. Every President said no and Truman gave it back to France in '45. Every killer who went their should grovel for forgiveness for the brutality they left and landmines still exploding to this day. Yeah, they kept the VietCong from invading Texas. @@margaretcook1839
Thank you for your service 🇺🇸
Master songwriter. Artist extraordinaire. Such a beautiful body of work. Been in my life and tape deck, man, how long, 50 plus years? The journey has gone by so quickly. Beautifully done, Jackson, as always.
I thought your comments about the Journey and 50 plus years were poignant and it reminded me of line in The Pretender... "I've been aware of the time going by, They say in the end, its the wink of an eye" I am in my 50's now and listened to Jackson for 40 plus years. It's a shame that the awareness of Life's deeper meanings we have later in life isn't part of our understanding when we are young.
@@jhodges1369 Thank you. Yeah, Jackson was right. It is the wink of an eye.
Things did run past kind of quick, didn't they. Seems like yesterday I was nodding my head to "Running on Empty." "Looking into their eyes I see them running too." Cheers.
They say in the end, it’s a blink of an eye
@@jhodges1369 Or it's just as well, depending on how you look at it. To have full 'awareness of Life's deeper meanings' at a very young age might just stop a lot of people living wide while they have the time and health to do so. Also in my experience most of them are truly individually learned by experience - so there's that ;-) Jackson's beautifully crafted music stands alongside above all that and represents a mature and wistful look at life with all its vicissitudes - and for the thinking listener, I believe it always will.
I just stumbled across this last week when I heard a cover. Not sure how I missed this through the years as I’ve always liked Jackson’s music, but this is one of the most beautiful songs ever written and one in which almost everyone can identify with as they reach their later years as I have.
How is it possible for someone to put the alphabet in such an order to form these words? To say that every time I hear this song I am really moved would be an understatement. I can not thank you enough.
I heard Jackson in college, sold my electric guitar and bought an acoustic never missed hard rock . Thank you Jackson for all the great music for the last 49yrs
“Don’t confront me with my failures, I have not forgotten them.” Just wow.
I was turned on to Jackson by my brothers when I was 11. Now at 63 I so wish I could see him in concert. The limits I have these days may prevent that but I'm still trying. Thank you Jackson for one of the soundtracks of my life.

I saw him about 5 years ago in an outdoor venue. It was laid back and just such a great evening. I hope you get to see him.
By far the most prolific singer-songwriter storyteller and the soundtrack of our lives.
Annette includes Mr.Dylan is all due respect
Jackson Brown is not just going thru the motions no matter how many times he does a song. Every song every time seems he’s sharing part of himself.
One of the most brilliant songwriters of the last 60 years! Still amazing.
Ever ❤
It was in the 70s that I first Discovered Jackson Browne,, what more can I say then he is phenomenal.. I always remember the relationship I had so long ago because every time I hear a Jackson Browne song it comes flooding back to me.
"These days I seem to think a lot
About the things that I forgot to do for you
And all the times I had the chance to"
That cuts deep and must resonate for so many people
That was a lesson in my life I actually learned when I was 19-20. I am now almost 73. It involved the unexpected death of my brother who was like a twin although two years younger. A situation occurred which I have regretted every year since it happened. I turned him away at my door for what I thought was correct, but it really happened because of a selfish, petty desire. It was the last time I ever laid eyes on him. Ever since, I do not miss a moment to tell people that I love them. I don't want to ever regret again things I could have done or said but failed to. Somehow in his youth, Jackson wrote this beautiful song with a depth of knowledge and wisdom well beyond his years. It's almost as if he wrote it to be performed with such passion by his senior self after a lifetime of living. I love it. Absolutely extraordinary. ❤
@@suesims5943 I can see why it would have so much resonance for you. Thank you for sharing.
The things I forgot to do for EVERYONE.🥺
" And ths children solemnly wait for the ice cream vendor" Brings back memories of my older briother and I on a hot Florida day chasing the ice cream truck in the late 70's. Life gets messy and we dont talk much anymore. I hope he still runs after the ice cream truck when it comes around.
Same memory, but with a sister that choose to leave our family. Life gets messy indeed when you live a long time.
My favorite composer. Jackson has encapsulated life in California. I grew up near him. Orange County and Los Angeles. We love him. He is our gem. We adore his storytelling and we want to walk with him silently. He is these days forever
To see Jackson Brown these days make me think of how old we all are. That loved Jackson Brown as we seen him get famous. the 70s was great .
Both Greg’s and Val’s guitar work on this song are beautiful … their solos and their interplay at the end. I also agree that an older, more mature, and slightly weathered Jackson Browne adds gravitas and poignancy to the lyrics more so than the teen who wrote the song. Great performance!
Thank you for mentioning Gregg. This song was written with him in mind to sing it.
Heavenly
My brother , it is so so clear, why you were put on this Earth . You have touched so many lives and have been a comfort to all of us who speak on these pages of your posts . You are so loved JB ; by so many who have shared this lifelong journey with you . Thank you for coming around to see us as much as you do. Even the shortest of hours seeing and listening to you in the same room sets me on such a natural high.

Jackson Browne, the great lyricist! He combines words in such a profound way. Saw him and James Taylor in Portland, OR a couple of years ago and James Taylor mentioned that so often, the audience was so quiet that you could hear a pin drop. A tribute to Jackson’s profound words. Such a talent! All these musicians are the absolute best!
So beautiful! Part of my life for over 40 years. The sound of his voice and lyrics touches the soul.
How True !!!
Agreed ! Beautiful song by a great artist 💖
Iv been lucky enough for his music to be part of my life for over 40 years too, & how true about his music/lyrics touching the soul.
Same with me Jack. Where's the time gone?..
Before I met my wife she ventured to America in '87 in hopes of seeing Springsteen and Browne concerts...she returned home without seeing either perform. Next year (2023) Jackson Browne is scheduled to perform in New Zealand...we will so be there!
Thanks for all the wonderful videos on RUclips!
“There are many ways of breaking a heart. Stories were full of hearts broken by love, but what really broke a heart was taking away its dream - whatever that dream might be.”

I'm still in love with his voice and musical poetry. Who isn't?
I hope he never gets tired of playing this because I’ll never tire of listening to it!! ❤❤❤❤
Gog Bless Jackson. I also am growing OLD. It's called life and it is going faster every year.
And nobody gets out of here alive.
I hope this is not a silly story to tell…this song just always brings me back to this moment in time. It lessons of this song seemed so poignant at the time as they still do and always will. Way back in the mid 70’s, I was 15 and went out to a party with a guy I worked with. It was June and a beautiful early summer evening. Live music and beer, open fields and moon shadows. It was out on a farm and we got parked in(we were not really upset about it at the time🙂) and I didn’t get home until 3AM. My mom’s stare upon me sleeping woke me up in the morning! 😱 I was told I was grounded for the summer. I spend much of my days sitting under a big old oak tree in our backyard listening to this song over and over from my little battery operated tape recorder. I was so remorseful. 😪 After about 2 weeks my mom asked me why I was hanging around the house all the time. I apparently had earned my redemption and my freedom.🙂 It felt like a step in growing up…and remains timeless to this day.
Very nice thoughts and powerful too !
Nice coming out story bro

My all time favorite Jackson Browne song. Better than ever! Thanks for everything...
Mine as well. "I wonder if I'll see another highway?" You probably know that the song has been covered by 50 esteemed singers. This is going into the American Songbook.

What a North Star in the world.
Excellent performance!! I have been listening to Jackson since 1974--and he still sounds awesome!! XOXOXO
Great version of a truly wonderful song, complete with the extra verse. I hope you see a lot more highways.
That line slays me. I moved to the middle of nowhere. "I wonder if I'll see another highway."
Geez. How could it get better than this?! All my life I have been listening to Jackson's music yet here it is even better than ever! Simply put, Jackson is a minstrel for the ages
Well written post. This is the first version of the song I've heard. Now I've also heard it by Gregg Allman, Elliott Smith, Nico and Saint Vincent. It is American Songbook.
A poet.
Love this song, it's lyrics speak to me. The look on Jacksons face and the tone he sings it in makes me think it means something different to him today vs when he was writing it at 16. Stick around JB
This man. He is a national treasure. He writes music that touches the soul. Words that are felt in the heart. I saw him a few years ago and how grateful I am that I did. Seeing him under the stars at Pinewood Bowl in Lincoln, Nebraska was the perfect setting. Thank you, Jackson, for the music.
I mowed yards to buy albums For Everyman was #2 I was 12 yrs old.
This song from your youth has even more meaning now. Funny how that happens. ❤
I love music that is clean, meaningful, and not over-produced. I feel every word of that song...cause there aren't that many days left!
I thought your comment "aren't that many days left" was poignant and it reminded me of a line in The Pretender... "I've been aware of the time going by, They say in the end, its the wink of an eye" I am in my 50's now and listened to Jackson for 40 plus. It's a shame that the awareness of Life's deeper meanings we have later in life isn't part of our understanding as younger men.
I remember when he first released this song. I sadly loved it then, and I love it still. Thank you sooooo much. I like Gregg Allman's version , too. But to me, this will always be Jackson's song. Such a human song. Thanks for posting. And thanks for the song.
It's hard to even think of anything to say about this that would be enough. ♥️
So sorry for the infringe on your privacy. Beautiful song. How are you?
Right, superlatives fail on this one.
Yep
Quite possibly the best version of this fine song he's ever recorded.
The first time the opening bars hit my ears, I felt a tug that strengthens with every listen. Jackson's humanity humbles me... he humbles all of us in the most profound mystical way.
And I. A perfect composition in every way.

Perfect description 👌
Yes, exactly.
I saw Jackson Browne when he was relatively unknown when he opened for the band America with his album “saturate before using”. He blew everyone away and was so much better than the lead band America.
This band, that song, just perfection.

Hey Jackson, your music helped me get over leaving home at 17 and finishing high school living on my own. The wonderful people who took me in and helped me get through that year in Austin, Texas in 1978 played your albums almost every night. Your songs are in my DNA.❤

Hopefully in Perth Australia as well

Jackson Browne is a music legend who churns me just like when I first heard him through a dearest friend who departed too early. I also love how that he always brings highly talented musicians to play with him. Greg Leisz, for instance, is an American artistic treasure. God bless.

I don’t think I would ever tire of hearing any of his work. Bravo Mr. Browne

He paints landscapes of life.
Jackson Browne was my first songwriting hero. Running On Empty was the album that introduced me to him, and I didn't even like that album touching others in my collection. It just seemed too special to be left in the same stack. Thanks, man. You mean a lot to me still.
I just hope Jackson Browne knows what an impact his music is had on people on me from 1970 six on two today and one has nowhere left to turn listen to Jackson browne's music and you know you're not alone

Jackson Browne is deeply tied to my memories of dear friends I made in the 1970's who have since passed away. His melancholy thoughtful lyrics, steady presence, and perseverance on the music scene for these 50+ years is a gift, certainly to those of us who came of age during the 60's - 70's.. listening to these great tunes. This music and band was pure magical, this album was and still is timeless listen to those rhythm,s and production oversee from Gary Katz, still better than most bands today in 2024 and drums from Jeff Porcaro it just doesn't get any better than this..
Saw him the summer after HS graduation, 1975, at Tanglewood…$4.00 lawn seats…first of many of his shows!
Fantastic older man version of one of the most sublime songs . Always been there in my consciousness ever since I first heard it so many decades ago.
This song is in my Top 10, am 77, heard a lot of good stuff.
Why is that in all of the nearly 50 years I've heard this song, it NEVER gets old; and in fact, its many insights continue unfolding with the wisdom and experience that life brings. From such a young period of his life, a song he wrote beyond his personal experience remains rich and full of poignant depths.
