One tip not mentioned is look up reading order. The story doesn't always follow Batman #1, #2, #3, etc. It could be Batman #2, Detective comics #7, Batman and Robin # 4.

Hi I read Batman series by Tom King, is Batman always in Detective Comics? are they both canon?

    • @MJ-zl3vo
      @MJ-zl3vo 4 года назад +17

Both series are canon. I haven't read either personally so I don't know if Batman is currently in Detective Comics. He usually is. I wouldn't worry much about it though since the Batman book seems to be mostly self-contained. With just small references to stuff in other books.

Honestly i find the whole "split stories into different books" thing to be very confusing. Stories shoild stay within there own series. They should do batman for batman stories, det.comics for one shot batman stories or stories for other characters (seriously, it don't gotta be all batman) and batman and robin for stories about the 2 but seprate from the other stories. They should also have a timeline in each comic to exain where each story goes in relation to batman stories and and the greater dc universe. All of this can apply to action comics and superman and basically any other character in dc or marvel.

Once you have started reading comics don't be afraid to call yourself a comic book fan. the label of comic book fan isn't something that you get with the amount of comic books you read. I've been reading them for years now and the fact is that's the point of view of somebody who's been reading comics only for a couple weeks is just as valid as my point of view to me. And also remember that when criticizing a comic book character, that every character is somebody's favorite character so be respectful. I've seen people criticize Aquaman based solely on a bunch of Saturday night live sketches without actually reading a single book. So be respectful of other people's opinions.

Let me start by saying, I'm 66 years old. Yeah, old as dirt. When I was a kid, there were no comic shops at all. Comics were found at grocery stores, in the magazine section. One grocery store in particular, in my home town, had a small area set aside for kids to sit while Mom shopped. The store would put new comics on the table for us each week. This was my introduction to the wonderful world of comics. Now, so many years later, I still collect comics, have sold off three whole collections and currently have approx 65,000 comics, with just a few left over from the 1960s.
I truly believe that reading comics has made my reading skills better than they might have been.

#11. Find a “comic buddy”. For me I had my dad and uncle, but comic buddies are great. They help you get into comics. if they let you borrow their comics, you can get a taste of it without actually buying anything. Comic buddies also help you find out what you really like in a comic and what characters you like. They help you with so many questions that you might have. So yeah if you can get a “comic buddy” it’ll help so much.

I'd also recommend looking in your local library. Most libraries have graphic novel sections. It's free, so you're not out any money, so it's great way to test the waters. Sure, you might not find the same selection as you would in a comic book shop, but you'll find tons of graphic novels that contain full story arcs, and usually the offerings are enough to give you some idea of whether or not you're remotely interested in the character, artwork, or writing.

I've always been comic adjacent. I played City of Heroes as a kid, Watched Teen Titans and Batman Beyond on tv, and had always loved the Spiderman movies. This year I watched Invincible with a few friends and finally decided to take the plunge after watching such an amazing show. Went on the wiki and started making a list of every series I was interested in the current DC/Marvel continuities. I prefer more small scale heroes so picked up Teen Titans Academy and Robin issues as well as back issues. There is so much for me to talk and it's all so exciting. I'm not a huge fan of Venom but the King black event seems really interesting so I might try some things I normally wouldn't in the Marvel Comics.

I actually started reading comic books in the mid and late 1970s. For me, it started with the animated Super Friends and Shazam. And then Lynda Carter's Wonder Woman and Christopher Reeves' Superman really piqued my interest. I read the first five years of The New Teen Titans! Yes, I had issue one, which my mother, without my permission, gave away (!!!!) I stopped reading in the fall of 1985 when I started college: I could no longer afford it and did not have the time. After that I only kept up with the important stuff like the death of Superman and, of course, movies and television shows. I got back into reading comics regularly when I was 44 years old and DC relaunched with the New 52. I forgot how much I had missed it. I caught up with a lot of stories using many of the recommendations noted in this video as well as watching Variant Comics (when I first discovered your channel, I thought you guys were broadcasting from a physical comic book store!) This is a great video (as always)----thank you for posting!

This was a cool vid. When I got into this world of comics fully, I asked a lot of questions, looked up vids, comments etc. It took a lot time and dedication. Was able to find my own LCS and been in there ever since almost weekly (crazy, I know) making friends. But as I say, "if your into something be into it." When I finally had the opportunity DC Rebirth came at the right time and my love for these characters grew even more, truly understating them, and their world. (Comics is the biggest medium out there, you don't have to follow just DC and Marvel superheroing. You have plenty of other genres and publishers). Now, sometimes I do feel like even I can turn into a toxic comic fan and for that I apologize. But when I see a person speak on a character they know absolutely nothing about it does bother me. Call what you see or maybe call it passion. But I dislike when a person who has never picked up a single storyline spew inconsistencies about a character scaring him/her off from someone new who maybe missing out. Example, Superman. He's lasted a 1k issues and been around for 80 plus years with classic storylines for a reason. READ people. Make your own judgment, get your own unbiased info from the source. Movies and TV only tell so much. Anyways, sorry for the rant. I'm mostly a DC guy whose a huge fan of Superman and Marvel just for the X-Men.

I started with the walking dead, recommend everyone does the same. It's an amazing and long story with a lot of impact and a good message. It's good for people who don't feel the superhero thing or people that don't know where to start. It's a way to see if you like comics and the way the medium tells an emotional bittersweet story.
(For dc or marvel definitly look up the reading order by just typing "reading order (character) or (event) or (story arc)" when you want to read all new 52 batman comics in order for instance. It tells you what issues to read when so you dont get it in the wrong order or get story archs spoiled.

I think another great tip is to check with your local library. Mine has tons of comics in the form of ebooks, 100% for free. This is a great option for people who have limited funds but still want to read comics.

I tend to think when collecting individual issues of comics deciding how far back you want to go matters as in some of the older comics cost more, and the writing and drawing was different depending on the era.

Another tip to find physical comics is to look for a used bookstore since they usually have an entire section dedicated to Comics while you may not find the exact comic you want you can probably find some good deals on a lot of great comics and may even find some great comics you would have never heard about otherwise

only for marvel/dc, every other company has a simple layout, just go from 1 up to the present volume and you get the whole story. It is the reason their sales are going downhill every year

@@SantaPorter the only western comics I have are Secret Wars, daredevil's man without fear run, kraven's last hunt, 2 walking dead volumes and amazing spiderman's first omnibus. They tend to be very price-y to buy individually as issues and even when collected into bigger books they still are expensive. But some of the stories are very good and I would suggest anyone to check them out! The rest i just do online.

Been reading comics for probably 7-8 years now.
My very first story was Blackest Night. My aunt recommended it to me when they visited.
My first graphic novel was Secret Invasion (just imagine the confusion on my part). Prior to that, I would always read Wiki pages.
Nowadays, I have a bookshelf filled with novels and a drawer full of comics. I also have posters and action figures.

I say, skip single issues completely. Especially physical single issues. Amazon is your best option for discounted trades. Only buy single issues (physical or digital) if you only want one or two issues from a trade, it's a oneshot, or the issues would be cheaper than the trade.

I was into comics first, although the Spider-Man and F4 cartoons in the 80's is likely what got me into the characters. I'm a bit older, so all we had was the Howard the Duck movie and that old Captain America one when I was a kid (Loved the Michael Keaton Batman films as well)

I went to a comic book store and I asked the guy behind the counter how do I get interested in reading comics. He told me just go on Wikipedia. I started going to the comic book store in Free Comic Book Day . I would get free comics and buy discounted books like “Batman Road to No Mans Land”. I also have an account with ComiXology. I love that service . 👍👍👍👍👍

New readers need to be aware that characters that are seen in the big screen or television series are not truely an interpretation of what their characteristics and personalities are in the comic books. Therefore do not be upset disappointed of the heroes you enjoy in one media is not the same in another, this can be good or bad depending what the reader enjoys.

Tip for reading more comics is to leverage your local library for trades, I've read so many more comics because of It, and libraries are completely free. Every stop I make there I usually have around 10 trades, about $17 each, so it saves you so much money

The digital ones help me out a lot considering that I live in the country where western comic books are not mainstream media. The printed versions are almost always imported thus very expensive and more for collectable purposes than actual reading.

Image, image is my pick. Because image comics tend to have good short series and the image firsts where you get the first issue for $1. Also they seem more approachable to me because some people would think that you need to know everything about a character to start reading comics ( mainly DC and marvel).

For someone getting in with limited income a free option is an app called Hoopla. I know in my area (south shore MA) its tied in with my library. So while I collect a ton I can still read on the go too. Get 4 books a month and they've done a great job of keeping up to date on new books.
